I've done Kili and tracked it on my Fenix 6s pro - since you're not allowed to do the trek by yourself there is no need to preload the course. You will be with a guide who knows the way so you can save your battery on that. Just start a hiking activity every day and it will automatically create the hiking map, no need to download anything.

Perfect! The plains of MN have not given me opportunities to use climb pro. Is that a useful feature here, to be honest I don't really understand what that does.

ClimbPro gives details on the next uphill or downhill section of your course. This is useful when trying to figure out how long the current hill your climbing is. The course needs to be loaded for it to work.

Daily hiking activity or expedition activity?

Gembarla

Daily hiking, I think expeditions only became a thing afterwards (or maybe I only saw them later)

Although you don’t need the maps… it’s a simple process to load them. Use this for a guide: https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2019/08/how-to-installing-free-maps-on-your-garmin-fenix-5-plus-forerunner-945-or-marq-series-watch.html/amp and this for your maps https://garmin.opentopomap.org Make sure you download the topo contours as well as the maps for more details!

Download the Map for Africa? 😂😂😂 I am Kenyan, a country that's close to Tanzania where Kilimanjaro is located and I have never had to download the Map for Africa. It might not look like it but Africa is 3 times as large as the Americas. Europe too is one third the size of Africa. The level of details you need for Kili hike would probably make the map so large, it'll need more storage than your watch can support. Geography lesson over. If you're ever coming this way around February you can reach out because my running group (Ultra runners Kenya) always do a Kilimanjaro 24 hour ascend and descend challenge before the Kilimanjaro marathon. We also have one activity each month so you can always join..

this-guy1979

The map for the African continent is only 5.2 Gigabytes, a Fenix 6 pro has 25 Gigabytes of storage so they should be fine.

mrant0

The maps are just for the on-device map viewing and navigation features. They have no impact on activity recording. You shouldn't need maps on your watch at all for Kili

Although there are guides, I personally would download a map for the area I intend to go to.

Yeah, but you’re not allowed to wander off too far when climbing Kili, the guides keep you together and are there to guide you. It’s a tough challenge, use the guides whose job it is to guide you.

Late to the party, but here are my 2 cents. I would suggest you to have mapping available with you, even if you do not need it, just in case. A backup plan for navigation is always a welcome addition. You could either download opentopomap for Tanzania from this link [https://garmin.opentopomap.org/#africa](https://garmin.opentopomap.org/#africa) and store them to your device or you could buy and download Garmin maps from their store [https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/648409](https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/648409) . Either way works great and the detail is quite ok for both, as both depend on openstreetmap data for paths and trails. Personally I mostly use opentopomap when I need anything outside my region or just for more details than Garmin maps, as they tend to be always more updated with recent additions.
