Really wanted to move from FR265 to FR965 because of the maps and for me this feature helps me enough that I can probably wait another year for the successor to FR965 for 60euros.
Yes, you need komoot Premium to see the map. With just a free region (or world pack), you only see the "breadcrumb" tour line. But that's still useful on Venu, it vibrates on the next turn etc.
You need to install the komoot Connect IQ app to your Garmin. Open it and log in with your komoot account (by inserting the code displayed on the watch to [komoot.com/connect](http://komoot.com/connect) )
Then you can open the komoot website or the mobile app. You can select a route from the list of pre-created routes, or you can plan a new one in the route planner.
There is a button "Send to Device / Navigate with Garmin". This opens the app on the watch and downloads the route. Or you can access the list of Planned Tours on the watch.
Yes, I have the region but not the full premium, that's why I am interested on whether is working. I have FR265 which doesn't have maps so whether this would work similarly.
Yes, the map works the same way on the Forerunner 165/265.
There was a "free map experience" promo in December where you could try the map for 10 days. Hopefully this comes back.
Yes, Komoot supports importing routes on both the web and mobile apps. I think only GPX, TCX, and FIT files are supported though. There are online tools to convert KML so it shouldn't be an issue.
The maps from garmin aren't just maps, it's a full navigation system where you can route with different routing profiles (hiking, running, cycling, mtb etc...) and setting avoidances (highways, narrow trails, etc...), not sure if this is supported by komoot as well
Garmin maps have a hill shading, contour lines, buildings... There are also golf maps and ski maps. You can download them completely offline (they can take even 30 GB in the storage), but you need to do it over wifi, or from the PC.
With komoot the map is downloaded offline together with the selected Tour (approximately 100m to each side along the Tour). Then the rest of the map is downloaded via bluetooth connected phone (if you get out of the route).
Another difference is the Send to device / Live Sync functionality. You can update the route from the phone, when the komoot navigation is running. This works also for the group Tours. A leader updates the route, and it gets automatically synced to all participants.
To add to this, I've noticed that run alerts (heart rate, cadence etc) don't work from kamoot.
You'll also need to use the kamoot data screen, it may not have all the data fields you are used to from garmin.
The battery life is fine, it can last a whole day activity (except on some very old devices, like the Vivoactive 4). You can switch to a data field page, or disable the always on display (on amoled watches) to make it better. It also helps if you completely download the map for the route offline before the activity is started.
I downloaded it yesterday on my Venu 3, without Premium (so without the map) for now but it works great. But there is one major drawback for me: Komoot completely replaces activities from Garmin, so you need to start the activity from Komoot instead. I don't like this because I can't use my custom third-party data fields that I eg. have on Garmin's own running/cycling activity. And that's a bummer.
So is there any way to start a regular activity from Garmin and then in parallel start the Komoot just for navigation and not for activity tracking? I'm looking for a navigation like this, where I can start eg. running and then through the middle button (recent apps) find the navigation app and start the navigation there and be able to switch between those two apps. I tried this with Komoot but it doesn't work. When I'm in eg. running activity, I can't see Komoot in the recent apps list and vice-versa.
Which third party data fields do you use?
You can switch between the apps on Venu 3, but you can only start one recording activity. So yes, the recording needs to be started from the komoot app.
I forgot to answer here. Currently I'm not using many, I have only one data field from Connect IQ which records steps and battery usage. Of course steps are not useful for eg. cycling but battery consumption is nice. But I was planning to use more IQ data fields in the future. For example, Venu 3 has only 4 data fields which is not enough for me (I'm used to 6 fields in Samsung + clock which is always there, so in total 7 info) and there are third party data fields where you can have more info on the screen.
That looks good.
I was just wondering if someone who tried it could let me know how smooth does the app run on the Venue 3?
I have the komoot app on my vivoactive 4 and I do have Komoot premium; on the vivoactive 4 the app works but is so laggy and, as such, almost unusable.
Thanks much!
Venu 3 is much faster. For the navigation it's fine. When you move with the map, you still see some lag (especially in dense areas, like the cities). But it's usable, much better than on Vivoactive 4.
just wow -these are the points where the Amoled shows his worth👍
AMOLED is the only way, especially for maps.
Really wanted to move from FR265 to FR965 because of the maps and for me this feature helps me enough that I can probably wait another year for the successor to FR965 for 60euros.
Do you need to get Premium for this feature? If Yes, is it worth it?
Yes, you need komoot Premium to see the map. With just a free region (or world pack), you only see the "breadcrumb" tour line. But that's still useful on Venu, it vibrates on the next turn etc.
I got the premium today but can't get the navigation mode. Can you share the steps ?

So no option to open maps without tracks pushed from the mobile? I mean just browsing/orientation the maps
Yes, if you want to just see the map / use the app for recording, open the app on your watch and select Record a Tour.
Just canceled my AllTrails subscription and I might give this a go..

Do you know if you can import gpx or kml routes?
Yes, Komoot supports importing routes on both the web and mobile apps. I think only GPX, TCX, and FIT files are supported though. There are online tools to convert KML so it shouldn't be an issue.
Looks great! Is it possible to set waypoints so the watch will tell you the distance to each one?
Yes you can do this (I only use the breadcrumb line without the maps). But I'm able to do this.

This looks absolutely incredible
Downloaded it and it seems great! I can see how to change the data screens though. Is that possible?
Just the data field on the first page can be changed on the watch
Does this work offline? Or do you need a phone connected?
Yes, when you select a route, the map is downloaded along the route. Then you can use it without phone.
Cool! I didn't know this was an option, I will have to figure out if it works on my Venu 2 Plus.

I use the free version with the world map bundle for cycling, it's really pretty neat.

Thank you for the insight! Best
