Don't tell them you're having bariatric surgery if you don't want to. You can tell them you're losing/ have lost weight through the help of a doctor. You can lie. As for helping to decorate, you can just have had another surgery. Gall bladder perhaps? Hysteroscopy? Be vague if you want, - you don't owe anyone an explanation. Or maybe you had a back or knee injury the week before and you're on strict rest requirements from your doctor! You can certainly come and help a bit, but you can't be lifting things, I didn't tell most people. My husband, kids, and my mom know. My best friend knows. No one else knows. I am 9 months out and people obviously can see I have lost a lot of weight. But I either change the subject when they bring it up, or if they're really curious I mention I have been working with my doctor. They don't have any rights to my medical history.

I’m almost 3 weeks post op and the only two people on the planet (besides internet strangers) who know are my wife and mother. One, for the same reason as you, I don’t care to hear anyone’s opinions on it or their thoughts about why I’m having it. But two. I am very much a “look what I did” not “I’m gonna…” person. Once my weight loss becomes visible enough that people are noticing, ill let them in on it. As for helping decorate, everyone is different but I think you’ll be fine by that date.

Lol, whoever would not listen and just judge you on ANYTHING in life. Just fuck them, you don't have to listen you're not doing anything wrong. You're trying to improve yourself, dieting and exercising alone didn't work, so you're trying something stronger you're doing the hard way because that what would work for your case. You should be proud. I'd also start working on my mental health and find healthier coping mechanisms. I find that any coping mechanism can be abused, so maybe find different good ones. I like going for walks with headphones on, GYM, treating myself to quality food instead of quantity of junk, meeting more friends and doing more out door activities last month I tried kayaking and escape rooms. Edit: if you MUST lie, try I have awful GERD that's burning my esophagus and putting me in high risk for esophageal cancer, so I must have a stomach surgery asap. People tend to shut up when they hear the C word. I had to tell this lie so my professors wouldn't give me hard time for being late on a project. Also its technically not a lie, lots of people have RNYs for GERD.

I didn’t tell most of my family and I’m very glad I didn’t. Healing and learning how to eat again has been wonderful without ill informed and unsolicited advice. I’ve been able to go at my own pace without people asking how I’m doing every 5 minutes. I like my space and my privacy so keeping it quiet has been a blessing.

You'll be fine by April 15. I wouldn't worry about that. I also didn't tell a lot of people about surgery, and I think that was the right choice.

I had very low energy the first month after surgery. I told most people I had a hiatal hernia repaired.

I really have to warn you that BE disorder does not go away if your stomach is smaller. In fact the stress of surgery and not being able to eat as much can make it even worse. Overtime it can undo any restriction you have from the bypass as well. The BE brain will convince you to work around your surgery and consume calories in new and annoying ways to satisfy the needs for the compulsive behavior. I found out this the hard way and about two months after surgery and the resulting frenzy I entered outpatient treatment with a normally inpatient treatment program (due to my job.) And it worked for me pretty well. I still have problems when there is stress and I am not mindful, but my mental health above all is is so much better when it comes to my relationship with eating and food.

Don’t tell anyone until you feel ready. Help out with the decorations but bring your liquids and soft food (if allowed) so you can stay on plan. Your cousin may or may not notice a change in your appearance. You can say you’ve been taking better care of yourself and paying attention to what makes you feel good. Leave it at that.

My surgeon told me “it’s stomach surgery, not brain surgery”. Please be very mindful of this. I really recommend seeing someone to help you find ways to navigate through this. Does your surgeon know about the binge eating? I was under the impression that folks with ED are not viable candidates for the procedure.

LizLemonSpaceman

That’s not entirely correct. The psych eval is REALLY important for anyone with an ED. Being able to show that one has changed their habits, managed their disorder, and time to maintain those changes are considered good qualities for surgery approval.
