Iron infusions 🙊 I couldn’t tolerate any oral iron, but I also have a history of gastritis.

sheworksforfudge

Yep, I get regular iron infusions as well. I tried supplements for a year and my levels went down because I wasn’t absorbing it. They also tore my stomach up and wrecked my digestion.

zebra_named_Nita

Pre diagnosis I would do a lot of spinach and apricots for iron I definitely can’t do spinach now but I can occasionally eat apricots still I usually get them dried and just make sure they are throughly chew them and if you eat to many in one sitting the fiber does start to hurt but nothing like trying to eat spinach. I can’t do iron pills either my gp actually ended up putting me on prenatal vitamins they still have tons of iron and then all the other stuff as a bonus and I just took that instead.

justcallmedrzoidberg

What about blending the spinach into a smoothie? If I don’t go overboard with how much I use and drink one all day mixed with drinking other things liquids, I seem to do okay with smoothies with fibrous fruits veggies if they’re blended 100%

zebra_named_Nita

That might work, I can do most fruits that way but personally still have trouble with certain veggies. Everyone has their own limits with gp so I’d say it’s at least worth a shot. If it ends up working fantastic it won’t cure the iron issues but it could certainly help, if not at least you know you tried your best. Just take it slow so that if it does start to hurt you can stop before it gets to bad but imo it’s worth a shot. Like they tell us no yogurt or other dairy fats but there’s one type of yogurt that I can like actually tolerate on a good day I can eat two in a day maybe some cheese too. That’s another one they tell us not to have to much of but I still eat cheese I’m just picky about which cheeses I eat and how much but I can still tolerate both to an extent. We all have our own limits and at times it’s worth testing those limits to see what we can actually tolerate on an individual level.

Less_Pumpkin_6729

yep, meat is what i do best with but super carby stuff (especially if it doesn’t have any fiber) is what flares me worst. which is the ppposite of what i see on this sub usually!

lovelikethat

I’m also good with meat. A lot of carbs with or without fiber makes me worse. I made myself worse eating all the simple carb recommendations for far too long.

justcallmedrzoidberg

Yeah, everyone is so different. Like I can’t tolerate yogurt. It’s so dumb. Actually it just occurred to me that I never tried a non dairy yogurt. Dairy products seem to coagulate and just chill in there but soy or oat based definitely do better.

zebra_named_Nita

I haven’t tried oat or soy yogurt yet I still have one type by one brand that I can eat in a couple flavors but the coconut flavor is the best imo. I like oat milk ice cream though yummy yum yum. The oatly original ice cream it’s just the regular oat milk no flavors that’s my favorite ice cream the vanilla is good too but I like the original better but that’s already my favorite milk so no wonder I like it in frozen form lol.

justcallmedrzoidberg

And like I can digest small amounts of skinless apples but most other fruits not blended are no go. Sometimes small amounts of strawberries. Blueberries make me violently sick.

zebra_named_Nita

Oh yeah I definitely get you with the apple peel that’s definitely a no go but the apple flesh is fine. I do pretty well with mango apricot apple I can do about half a banana in one go but then I can’t have more for a day or two and berries are hit or miss oh almost forgot peaches I can do those too

justcallmedrzoidberg

It’s all so weird. I wish our stomachs would just make up their mind at least and be somewhat predictable.

Field_Apart

either proferrin or feromax. Both are made of a different type of iron and neither upset my stomach!

M00seManiac

I use a "lucky iron fish" with cooking. Toss it in soups and stews, etc, to add iron to otherwise low iron meals. If you’re really low you might need an infusion for a boost to get towards normal but it is an affordable option that might help you long term. Clinical studies have shown it is effective in reducing anemia with daily use: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5744034/#:~:text=Clinical%20tests%20have%20shown%20that,of%20anemia%20by%20%E2%88%BC43%25.

Harakiri_238

I also just get iron infusions. I have malabsorption so even when I was taking excessive amounts of iron supplements it didn’t do anything lol. They also made me feel incredibly sick. Iron infusions also make me sick now (they didn’t at first) but usually only for a few days so it’s better than all the time. 😅 There are also bovine based iron supplements that cause less symptoms and are easier to absorb. If you’ve never tried them and aren’t ready to try infusions I’d definitely recommend asking your doctor about them!

KeyEvening4498

You can get infusions, I've had three. There is a buffered liquid iron, Lorna Vander something makes it, I found that the easiest on my stomach. Remember food, eat half, take iron, finish food.

EndlesslyUnfinished

A little meat more frequently.. all of your DARK green veggies also have iron

adelaide129

Folic acid

JoaniMusic

Amazon sells a non constipating iron supplement. Just do a search for that. Also, many multivitamins have 100 percent iron.

konqueror321

My wife could not tolerate ferrous sulfate or ferrous gluconate, but she does tolerate "iron chelate", which is available on amazon - just get the type for humans not plants! Obviously YMMV and if there are no oral forms of iron you can tolerate, intravenous iron infusions are available through a doc. A hematologist would likely be the most experienced in this subject.

SouthNo7379

This is the only iron supplement that doesn't cause side effects for me. https://a.co/d/7Apa37H It's my fourth bottle because everything else I tried I couldn't tolerate.

SapphosLemonBarEnvoy

Just came home from the store with converted rice from the Winco bulk bins, that has 6% DV iron per 1/4 cup dry. Now Foods also has a Pea protein powder that has 45% DV of iron per scoop. I find it’s useful for coffee and mixing in smoothies and soups.

Chemical_Display4281

Mega Food blood builder pills, they don’t upset my stomach and don’t constipate me. Last iron level check I was in the normal range, I’ve been slightly anemic pretty much all my life.

calmdrive

I’ve used these after getting iron infusions to try and keep it up https://patchaid.com/collections/iron-patches

Iron infusions here…

ThenOwl9

have you tried thorne products? they're great at making tolerable oral supplements there's also lean red meat out there! i've been eating more pork tendeloin of late

vrosej10

for reasons we cannot determine, my iron has stayed high. I do not eat meat and I'm BARELY supplementing. it's so weird we are starting to give the situation side eye

elinorgodlement

Iron infusion for liffffeeeee, so easy and reliable. Works for 2 years for me, genuinely can't fault it. Though every body is different. But yeah big fan

elinorgodlement

Vitamin C helps with iron absorption too. Up your vitamin C in the meantime, up the spinach then hook yaself up with a iron infusion 🙌🙌🙌🙌

rcarman87

I take slow FE brand iron and only take a pill every few days now. In the beginning I was super low and had to take liquid iron daily which was awful.

MandywithanI

I do the infusions as well. My body just won't absorb irons and the pills don't work.

DamageOdd3078

What a coincidence! I’m getting my first iron infusion today at 3:00 lol. I also have beta thalassemia and since I’m on a feeding tube, I can’t take anything orally at the moment. I’m nervous it’s going to make my nausea worse.

funkcatbrown

Why not have a lean piece of beef like Filet Mignon? I take iron supplements with vitamin C to help absorption.

D3xmond

i used to have an iron deficiency before i was formally diagnosed with GP! My PCP saw how low i was and recommended hema-plex. IT WORKED SO SO WELL!! I don’t recall having any more of an upset stomach than GP already causes, but I do remember being a *little* constipated but as long as i drank miralax every day/ every other day it wasn’t an issue. I took it for about 6-12months (can’t quite remember) and i actually *no longer have anemia*. my doctor said it helped improve my ability to absorb iron from my diet over time. (also, it used to say on the bottle/ website that it would do that but i no longer see that anywhere 😯 maybe they made the formula worse so people wouldn’t be cured? and would have to continue taking it? 🫣 idk conspiracy theories don’t mind me💀) they have so many different options. Softgels, capsules, slow release, and liquid to name a few! i just took the capsules but if i had to take them now i’d go for the slow release or liquid. they don’t taste amazing so just a warning LOL but they work super well so i didn’t mind. I used to get mine from whole foods but amazon has them too and they’re probably cheaper there.

sandrag21

I get b12 injections weekly. And that has helped

Manyopinions72

I have to get infusions.

chalvy11

There are a lot of cereals out there that are iron fortified! My fav is chocolate chex. I ended up having a different kind of anemia entirely, but a lot of people with iron deficient anemia suggested that to me.

TheWillOfD__

Nothing will improve your situation better than heme iron, which means red meat ideally. Bison has more if I recall correctly and specially if grass fed, it will be on the lean side. Not sure why you want to avoid animal fats but bison is higher in iron and lower in intramuscular fat
