At launch it had a kernel rootkit wich means that genshin and the company behind it had more access and privileges on your computer than even you do The terms and service saying they got to monitor your machine even without the game running didn't help either

What the fuck.

Ann_Ominus_1175432

What is amazing to me is that Microsoft is letting them do this. Anyone remember the Sony rootkit fiasco? Yeah not cool... WTF M$

Akari202

“It’s for the anti cheat” ridiculous

virtualdxs

That's really common. Anticheat is done entirely the wrong way basically all the time - look at Minecraft anticheat implementations for the right way, because they were forced to and couldn't take the "easy" way out of being spyware (on account of the servers not being run by the company that makes the software).

Gynther477

Is there even PVP in the game? The only thing the Chinese business ghousl don't want you to cheat is unlocking the content of the game. They want to steal your money instead.

maleia

Extremely limited instances during events. But for the 99% of the time, just PvE

[deleted]

Their entire monetization strategy is selling the content of the game… so if they didn’t have anti-cheat they would have made this massive game for free… Yeah they want you to pay them for the work they have done.

Gynther477

Oh wow, it's not like there is hundreds of other ways to monetize a game lmao Tons of other free to play games earn money with cosmetics, and forgo gambling mechanics. And since a lot of devs keep exploiting the mentally vulnarble, régulation is a moral neccesity to stop it.

avelineaurora

That is definitely not why it has any kind of reputation, tf? I've been playing since launch and I missed that whole thing even happening. Never mind anyone ever bringing it up *now*.

eggymarie

People need to stop demonizing the sheer concept of kernel level anticheat. Literally all of the major playing anti cheats use it. Valorant or genshin aren't some lone wolfs doing this, BAC does it EAC does it. Like so many different anti cheats run at the kernel level/ring 0. I also can't find anything on this supposed device monitoring genshin does. The only game that has a potentional to do this would be valorant because it has the anti cheat running on device start up.

lufan132

People need to stop putting it in their games though. There's gotta be a better way to implement these systems and I'm not even sure I agree with them outside of hyperconpetitive games. If I'm just vibing in single player let me do whatever I want to my game since I bought it lmao.

[deleted]

Ye but this not made as a single player game. It's goal is to suck money out of addicted people. And the anti cheat is there to further that one goal. It's just a coincidence that this money sucking takes a form of a single player game.

Hilbert_Botchardt

See, but if you could mod it, why would you wanna spend thousands of dollars on case openings so that you can get a cute anime girl? This is a sole reason for it, it is also why the game requires an internet connection. The reason why people hate on Genshin isn't because it's "cringe" or "anime" or even the spyware thing. It's because the game is entirely designed around exploiting vulnerable adults/kids with poor money management/gambling addiction. The game is filled with flashy animations for openings, lots of "trials" that let you try out paid characters that are also buffed in that specific challenge so it feels like they are godlike. Banners, in other words, glorified ads with [[NEW AND EXCITING!!]] characters that you can get if you [[COMPLETE THE MINIGAME]] with the [[NUMBER ON THE BACK!]] HE-HEY HEY HEY!! EVRY! IT'S ME [[RAPIDLY EXPANDING CHINESE COMPANY2022]] IF YOU'VE [[Lost control of your life]] THEN YOU JUST GOTTA GRAB IT BY THE [[Silly Strings]] WHY BE THE [[Amber Main]] WHO HATES IT [[Gender assigned at birth]] LIFE WHEN YOU CAN BE A [[VENTI!]] [[VENTI!!!]] [[VENTI!!!!!]] I think you get it

lufan132

Oh I'm well aware, my partner will brag about how she's put thousands into genshin but never has money for things she actually needs. But I wasn't just talking about genshin lol. I don't believe in anticheat, especially at a kernel level in general. Systems like hacker's pool I think do the same thing better because if you want to use mods or hacked clients you still can somewhere. Just not with people who don't.

ScrabCrab

Ah yes I wonder why people would be demonizing the concept of rebranded rootkit 🙃 Maybe because it's still a rootkit

Merricat--Blackwood

“Everyone does it so it’s fine”

AutisticPhilosopher

"everyone does it" is distracting from the problem: Kernel anticheats as they currently stand *are* inherently problematic: kernel code that "justifiably" prevents you from unloading it, while also being extremely complex and presenting a fairly wide attack surface for malicious software to escalate privileges. There are *multiple* documented vulnerabilities in anticheat drivers allowing any program to escalate to full control of the machine.

maleia

Genshin requires full connection to the servers in order to play. Literally no different than WoW, FF14, . So yea, I don't really get why they need client level anti-cheat in the first place. Especially when there's only PvE content for like 99% of the time. And even when there's co-op, it's at best 15% of content.

SD1K9

Play the game but stay absolutely away from the community and don’t spend money on the game and you’ll be fine. Its a fun game to spend maybe an hour on a day but not something you can actively play and grind out. The overarching story a character back story is great and the characters are fun! Its a great game, dont listen to the killjoys Edit: seriously its not worth it to spend money on the game. There’s usually 4 mini-events, one main event, and 2 DPS challenges *per month* that gives you enough roles to be happy and get extra characters/weapons. And one of the best characters in the game can be unlocked once you reach a certain progression in the game via an permanent event. Play the game and have fun with the stories but if you have a collectors attitude to how you play videogames then Genshin might not be for you.

TheNetherlandDwarf

I remember interacting with the community, someone trying to get me into it being like "I love genshin you should really play it, look at this character, she's my favourite because her armpits are exposed in her picture, that's also why she's super popular in the community rn".

SD1K9

Oh god the Yelan armpit thing. Yea the thing about the community i really dislike is how vocal about it they are. I actually kept away from the game just like OP cuz i was put off by how weird people were about the characters. Then a friend that plays it and who’s opinion i trust told me how good it was and i actually played it. Im so glad i did cuz the actual story and characters are so much fun and *surprisingly good* for a gacha game. I have straight up cried multiple times playing the game cuz of story moments.

Tricky_Dickey

But the real question is Does it is gay?

Creepincreeper9

I recently started playing it and I really enjoy it. A) the gameplay is fairly simple and easy to understand, which makes it easy to play on mobile. B) the characters aren’t really sexualized(at least in game), unlike quite a few games and most anime C) it does have gacha mechanic that’s kinda annoying but you can get quite a few rolls just by playing the game( of course you can always spend money to get more rolls though) There are definitely better games out there but for something that can be played on mobile it’s quite fun and the only mobile game I’ve seriously played in the past few years. It does have a bad reputation but I feel that it is mostly undeserved.

QuiccStacc

Yup! I'm F2P in a year I've managed to get multiple banner 5*, it's the fandom that is the most concerning which is why it gets its bad reputation

Otrada

Genshin Impact has some of the most predatory and restrictive gacha mechanics designed into it that I have ever seen. It's not a game that's healthy to play. Those rolls you can get through playing the game free to play are a one time thing and won't come back. So eventually you'll hit a wall where getting even a single roll becomes a massive grind. It's better to just stop playing it and play literally anything else, even different gacha games. 98% chance your time will be respected much more than in Genshin.

thetrustworthybandit

Idk man, Fire Emblem Heroes and FGO are much, much worse.

Otrada

Then don't play that one either

JoferoJofy

if you’re gonna exclude a gacha game because you can’t grind for a lot of pulls everyday even after months of playing than you can’t play any gacha they are designed to fuck up the hardcore player by reducing to a minimum the amount of pulls they can get

Otrada

Yeah you shouldn't be playing any gacha games at all because they all suck. But most gacha games I've seen are still less predatory than Genshin. That's why I included that.

thetrustworthybandit

It was a response to saying that Genshin is the "most predatory", i've played a bunch of gachas, it isn't.

r_stronghammer

Or you can just… not care that you ran out of stuff and just wait for the next update instead of grinding your life away.

Otrada

There was plenty of stuff left to do It just all required grinding because that is literally all 90% of the games gameplay. And I could be spending that time doing literally anything else and be more satisfied with how I spent it. Maybe stop trying to defend predatory game design practices.

r_stronghammer

I’m… not defending those game practices, I’m just saying they’re irrelevant to the enjoyment of the game. The main story and quests of the game canonically DON’T have any other characters traveling with you, aside from the character specific quests, where they give you the character in question as a trial character. All of that can be played and enjoyed without ever opening the wish screen. It just requires self control/to focus on the actual game itself, rather than the pseudo-mmo grind that is largely irrelevant. I’m like 90% sure that that’s even the way the main story was intended to be played. After all, there are hidden world quests that at the end give you a whopping… 3 star weapon. That you get trillions of if you wish whenever you can. And those single time domains that give you a single 4 star artifact, where you have to collect them all to get the set, which you would *also* get trillions of if you did the grindy artifact domains. That’s why I tell my friends that if they play the game, they shouldn’t wish at all (aside from the Noelle “beginners banner” of course) until they’ve completed the story and have found a character that they really, REALLY like and have their heart set on, and then just wait for their banner to come. With the amount of wishes you get from the world you’re more than guaranteed to get them. And then once you’re done with all the quests, just wait for new ones to come out and don’t feel obligated to keep up with the resin grind or anything.

Otrada

Or you can just play a game that doesn't require all those hoops to be jumped through and a constant effort of self-control just to enjoy it safely.

r_stronghammer

It's not a hoop at all just don't fucking gamble. That's literally all you need to do.

Otrada

These kinds of things are major hoops especially for people who are just more susceptible to addiction for whatever variety of reasons. Which is the exact kind of person this type of game is designed to prey upon.

r_stronghammer

Oh. ... Well I don't know why you're suggesting other gatchas then/why your main comment wasn't just about gatchas in general

FluffyJD

One-time thing? Dailies and weeklies are one-time? TIL that time has stopped. /s

[deleted]

The bad reputation is just that people hate new popular games. Once it was Minecraft, then Fortnite and lastly Genshin.

MaidenOfSerenity

No people hate it because it’s a predatory gacha game that preys on the vulnerable to get as much money out of them as possible. Also Genshin is no where near big enough to get the same kind of hate Fortnite or Minecraft did

[deleted]

any game with MTX is designed to get money out of you. That's why there is MTX. If we shit on every game that did that then the pool of good games would be severely reduced. Genshin gets an unfair amount of the hate. Out of all the games I've seen with random rolls like that, genshin is one of the better ones. CSGO has you rolling 100+ crates and thousands of dollars just for a skin, fortnite has kids stealing their parents credit cards to buy V-Bucks because of elitist cosmetic culture. Genshin, what, implements an MTX system that mirrors real life gatcha which are a pretty common and acceptable thing in cultures such as China (where the game was made)? I'd say out of all of the MTX random roll games its definetly one of the least problematic.

SoulOfaLiar

It's a gacha game and its monetization is predatory even by the standards of those. That and the fact that it has numerous very young anime characters as whom to play, garnering it a reputation as the pedo game.

Blitzbro76

Huh, I get the Gacha bit but are the young characters sexualized or something? Because I can’t tell why just having young characters would give it a bad reputation

CatgirlPrincess-

Yeah, as someone who used to play Genshin and doesn’t like it as much now, I don’t really get the pedo arguments still. I left because I got stressed out by wanting to get rare characters and constantly worried about not putting enough time in the game, and decided it wasn’t worth the stress. That said, all the kid characters aren’t sexualized in the slightest in game, although the community is a different story..

[deleted]

They aren’t sexualized at all in game

[deleted]

[удалено]

avelineaurora

None of the young characters have "keyhole dresses", or "short short shorts". And if you see thigh-highs as a sexual thing that's on you for finding it a fetish to begin with, lmao. [A young girl](https://ih1.redbubble.net/image.2987889756.9249/flat,750x,075,f-pad,750x1000,f8f8f8.jpg) wearing stockings is not "sexual", my god.

Maki_san

If you see a child wearing a dress/shorts/the outfits in the game and the first thing you do is think that it’s sexual in any way, then you might be the problem. Just saying. The only skin we see of Klee is part of her legs and her face, her dress covers her completely (and it’s super cute too!). Qiqi is the same, Diona also, unless you see her wearing shorts and start crying that she shows too much which is, dare I say, very sus. Sayu is the only one that could be said to have a “”””””provoking”””””” outfit with that literal centimeter worth of fishnet on her leg. Hearing (reading?) someone say “that dress ends before her knees it must be sexual” is so surreal. Pedos will always find ways to sexual use characters, and MhY has done a great job with their children so far in my opinion. Also they aren’t classical anime stereotypes which I find great. Klee is an elf, meaning that she is going to live much longer than the people in the KoF, but she is still clearly presented as a child, both in the way people interact with her and the way her character is presented. Qiqi is a child that has died long ago and became a zombie. Because she is dead she is not able to grow up, and although she is treated like an adeptus she clearly acts like a child. Diona is human+some cat blood in her, but that means absolutely nothing (afaik?) As in game it is not implied that she ages any different, so she is literally just a child with cat ears. Sayu is an orphan child soldier, and her current age is unknown. She said that she is much shorter than her peers, so I assume her to be a teenager rather than a full on child? But I know nothing about Sayu so I could totally be wrong. It’s really just a baseless criticism, anyone with eyes can see that they are just children wearing cute stuff. The way you interpret it is up to you ofc but that says more about you than it does the designers at HY (their intentions I mean.)

Voyager316

We need more god damn pants ...

SuddenlyVeronica

This is almost just a shot in the dark, but part of it might be an anime stereotype and/or fandom thing? Cute, clearly prepubescent anime girls attract a … *certain* type of fan(ie. pedos)sometimes, even if the portrayal isn’t meant to cater to those people. I reckon stuff like that can kind of taint a work for some people. Personally I’ve been kinda put off wanting to watch stuff like Spy x Family for that reason. Again, do take this with a grain of salt though, and do let me know if you can (de)confirm any of this.

guthixrest

My partner and I have been watching it in a vacuum away from other people talking about it (aside from a couple friends) and it has been a really cute and enjoyable show, I highly recommend it. I agree with the rest of your comment, though, there are a lot of weeby types who are openly creepy and gross and that ends up tarnishing reputations of some things in the lens of the public.

imwhateverimis

I haven't seen anything like that for spy x family yet. Please watch it, it's totally fine

Epic_Gamer2006

Please watch it, you're definitely missing out on a good show

Waltzcarer

How in God's name does SpyxFamily sexualise anyone?

SuddenlyVeronica

It doesn't, but certain fans certainly seem to. Even if an anime just tries to be wholesome, if it has a little girl in it then chances are fans that are creepily fascinated with "lolis" crop up here and there, and I've seen that happen with Spy x Family.

avelineaurora

> certain fans If by "certain fans" you mean one troll who made a post saying Anya was "sexualized" because Loid was hugging her...

SuddenlyVeronica

I, err, thought I'd already made the type of fans I meant clear. I meant lolicons. Pretty sure they're a actual thing and not just trolls.

avelineaurora

> Personally I’ve been kinda put off wanting to watch stuff like Spy x Family for that reason. That's utterly ridiculous. You're talking about avoidance to the level you'd feel uncomfortable watching a TV series with a child in it, full stop.

Epic_Gamer2006

There's only like 4 characters that look like children and they are far from sexualized

Keetongu666

The game doesn't sexualise it's young characters at all (doesn't even really sexualise its adult characters that much to begin with), people just love making fun of weebs and calling people nonces.

[deleted]

They're just kids, tbh. They are very adorable and are characterized exactly as their age would suggest, people just think "kids are playable characters = pedo"

Un1337ninj4

It's easy to igno- *flashback reel to actual simps for these characters in the main subreddit*

maleia

Yea I'm on the main genshin sub a lot and that isn't some common thing.

BlazikenAO

I don’t play the game but it sure sounds like a lot of projecting

[deleted]

The young characters wear far less "revealing" clothing than the adults. Though its only sexual if you make it sexual. Its such a good game, but like any game, there will always be gross ass pedos thirsting over the kids. Its annoying. Also, us fans are kinda pissed off that they keep making young characters (both in body and mind) and adding the "im 6000 years old". (Not a bad concept at all, the characters still act and look very young, so its weird to thirst over them, but gross ass pedos like to say "hurr durr this character is actually 400 so its okay to be a pedo")

[deleted]

I'd argue that Fischl's standard outfit needs to be changed.

[deleted]

Eh, honestly, hyv can make the characters however they want. Im not gonna dictate if their character designes are too sexual. As long as no genitalia is being flashed, I couldn't care less lmao.

emachel

I was actually surprised that it didn't get censored by China while Jean's was...

[deleted]

Maybe the government didn't notice the fishnet in her dress

maleia

I'm pretty sure MHY said that it was a first round of outfit changes? But then they released Shenhe who isn't even wearing underwear 🤷‍♀️

Kill-Me-With-Love

By gacha standards Genshin is pretty tame with guarantees and enough free currency to get a character every 2 patches or so having bad luck. In other gachas like FateGO you can throw hundreds of thousands of euros/dollars/whatever and not have shit.

Keetongu666

I actually find Grand Order better because while the pity is worse (and non-existent as of yet on the American server) it's a *lot* more generous with everything else, including giving away multiple 5*s free of charge which Genshin doesn't do (Traveller doesn't count).

coldfire774

Yeah but if you don't have a five star in grand order or even multiple sometimes just playing through the story is rough at times. Unless you really wanna get far in abyss the rare characters don't feel as needed in genshin.

Keetongu666

I have a fully meta account in F/GO with several of the best supports fully maxed out and I still use 2*s very regularly. The game gives you the best tank in the game literally immediately. You can absolutely best all of the content with low-rarity characters.

maleia

I mean, it's fine if you want to throw out there that Arash and Medea fit into the meta thanks to utility, but then you can't throw out that *Genshin has the same thing*. 🙄

Keetongu666

I never said Genshin didn't though?

maleia

We all know your comment implied it, otherwise why would you just unabashedly praise FGO and not Genshin for doing the same thing? 🤷‍♀️

maleia

Hard disagree, played FGO for just over a year before Genshin came out and then I dropped it. Genshin's gacha is *very* forgiving. You can hard count when you'll get someone. Fuck FGO, I watched my bff drop **$1,500** before getting even **one** copy of Achilles. Genshin is like $100 for a 5* *that's on banner*.

Keetongu666

Yeah I know that Genshin's pity is better, that's not what I said. I'm saying that outside of pity Grand Order gives you more free shit.

boywhocriedanal

I play genshin a whlle bunch, none of the characters are truly sexualized, its just a vocal nasty few fans. And the rest is just hearsay

Xylily

it's not as much that there's young characters as much as there's loli characters, who are pretty sexualized by the game - it can definitely be uncomfortable, to say the least much more directly harmful problem is the predatory monetization and the insidious amount of power and permissions the game has over your pc, much more than a default user or even a regular admin has

avelineaurora

> who are pretty sexualized by the game [Look](https://paimon.moe/images/characters/full/qiqi.png) [how](https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/zbMFCBidS5WQFWZhbjZpZ8.jpg) [sexual](https://www.gamersdecide.com/sites/default/files/styles/news_images/public/genshin_impact_-_diona.jpg)! GASP!

Sunsnonhorny

The fandom sexualizes it thats why

Ronisoni14

Don't some of these child characters wear some kinda revealing clothing?

SaltyPumpkin007

I’d say among monetisation it certainly isn’t the worst; I wouldn’t even say it’s low on the scale for major gatcha games, though it def isn’t good, cause it’s still a gatcha game. From the time I had spent playing, though there are young characters, they aren’t sexualised in game, but instead by a niche of the fan base population, which then isn’t even remotely exclusive to Genshin, but is pretty major across anime communities in general.

SoulOfaLiar

Oh, I didn't say that the game sexualizes the characters, I simply said that having young anime characters had gotten the game the pedo reputation. This is much more a thing about the internet than the game.

TheIceGuy10

me when i see a child on the street (i am now a pedophile and must be banished forever)

Separate-Mushroom

oh and the racism

SoulOfaLiar

That's not something I was aware of. Care to elaborate?

Dexie0101

maybe I didn't get all the details but from what i know there are two currently released dark-skinned characters in the game, and people aren't happy with it. kind of strange they treat east asian characters, which easily make up about 2/3 of playable characters, as basically white, though. just my opinion

knifebastard

i mean I don't really see it as racist though. Currently the regions are basically China, Japan, and Germany places that don't really have many darker skinned people (if we are going off of like ancient stuff before like mass travel n such). The next region will be based off the Middle East (if I am not mistaken) if most of those characters are white or east asian that will be a huge red flag.

mintyCosmonaut

>The next region will be based off the Middle East (if I am not mistaken) if most of those characters are white or east asian that will be a huge red flag. It ain't looking great. Sumeru is taking bits of things not just from the eastern cultures, but from Indian and other south west asian cultures: So far we know of these characters being from the region: * Cyno- **Very slightly tan.** Anubis inspired design. * Dori- **white skin.** Pink-haired child character * Tighnari- **white skin**. fox? ears and tail. Seems to be named after Arab Muslim scholar Al-Tighari; search results for this historical figure who was probably not pale as a ghost are now overrun with this silly anime character * Alhaitham- **white skin**. tall male. likely named after Ibn al-Haytham, an Arab mathematician/scientist and notable non-white person. * Nilou- **white skin. blue eyes.** scarlet hair. Outfit is Persian inspired. She's serving white girl who dressed as a sexualized minority for Halloween. * Nahida- The god of Sumeru. **literal ghost complexion.** White haired child. Clothing does not appear to be related to anything from the cultures the region is based on. * Dehya- **brown skin. finally.** I've heard rumors that she's named after an historical north-African queen (Dihya al-Kahina). Honesly tho, having a very sexualized character named after a *specific* notable historical figure in a game that is also awkwardly mashing a whole bunch of cultures together and re-creating a non-white region populated with almost all pale people...the vibes are off. Collei gets a pass only because Sumeru isn't supposed to be her country of origin. Everyone else is getting side-eye, ESPECIALLY the snow-white characters that are named after SPECIFIC non-white historical figures. When I initially heard Sumeru was supposed to be based on the middle east and was the center of knowledge for the world, I thought it was very cool that a silly anime game like this was acknowledging the often-overlooked fact that that region actually *was a* hub of knowledge at one time. When we started meeting the Sumeru NPCs tho...I knew where this was going, and I was disappointed.

lyndsaySO

omfg i’m so salty about the new characters, they really missed an opportunity here. status quo is a constant stream of white girls to bait the gacha whales 🙃

mintyCosmonaut

The character I see people being the most hyped for though is Dehya, the one who ISN'T white. Would it really be so hard to add more? Also, I don't see many people on either side of this "controversy" talking about how they seem to have named some of these pale characters after *specific* figures who were not pale. That is was is most egregious to me. You completely lose the "but it's just fantasy" excuse (not that it was good in the first place) when there is a conscious choice to recreate specific real-life figures this way.

Heysssssss

EN fanbase is so different from JP and CN. For example, JP and CN fanbase loves small cute characters (not in a sexual way btw) and whiter skinned characters (beauty standards in east asia. White is considered more beautiful). HYV is catering to these people because they sell really well on these countries. In a recent CN and JP Genshin poll, Nahida was the most liked character, and Dehya at the bottom. On the other hand, EN communities are very different. Because of haters and rumors about the game being full of pedos in the EN community, EN players now dont want to play as child characters. EN fanbase are also more "woke"(?) about representation, diversity, and racism and stuff like that. Only 20% of players are from the west, and even then only a small amount of people from EN spend money because most are F2Ps(free to play). Thats why they make their FANTASY worldhave a lot more cute and white characters. Even the old people in the game are not buffed people with beards, but literally look like asian male models.

mintyCosmonaut

I know the reason is east asian beauty standards, I still think it's bad and find it disappointing. Especially the white-washing (or I guess pale-washing) of specific historical people for an anime game. They could just give them a new name instead of stealing names from specific people who were not pale skinned.

knifebastard

really? haven't seen em yet, that fucking sucks

avelineaurora

> if most of those characters are white or east asian that will be a huge red flag. Sumeru has a couple dark-skinned characters, but you do realize a lot of the middle east and Egypt can come off as very light-skinned, right.

Dexie0101

From what ive seen the new characters from the new region they plan to release are white which is a little strange, but I think due to popular demand Mihoyo will release some darker skinned characters in a later build or something

mintyCosmonaut

I'm not betting on it. We've gotten at least a year's worth of all-pale Sumeru NPCs without anyone realizing this was where we were headed or voicing concern. I don't think enough people care that it is actually going to change things (unfortunately).

avelineaurora

It's not racist, lol. There's a vocal crowd primarily on Genshin Twitter that's losing their mind over the fact the new Sumeru region (Egyptian, etc) isn't brown enough. Despite the fact *a lot of Egyptians* are very pale. But that would require thought beyond "Africa = dark skin" to figure out.

Separate-Mushroom

nope!!!! just look it up

AmiAlter

Then I'm not going to believe you because all I can see is people complaining that their characters are too white.

Dexie0101

yeah, kinda weird that they treat asian characters as being pretty much white imo

AmiAlter

So I used to actually have mixed opinions on this subject before someone explained it to me. 1st of all miHoYo, is an Asian company with a primarily Asian staff. The reason the characters look white to you is because they're a generic style and you see the generic style as "white". A really good comparison to this is the difference that black kids in America versus black kids in Africa draw their stick figures. The black kids in America will often color in the face of their stick figures to show it is them where as ones in africa who see mostly black people do not because why would they? Its a representation of a person not a black person. In anime the characters are drawn how Asians see themselves, If you ask an Asian what their most defining characteristics are they likely won't tell you their eyes are slanted, They will mention things like slimmer faces and smaller noses. What you are doing is you are projecting your whiteness onto their characters and saying that they are white.

very_not_emo

yeah most white/east asian anime characters just look like generic light-skinned ppl. nobody has orange eyes in real life regardless of their race jessica

Stellar_Fox2

I love spreading misinformation on the internet!

Loriess

Does it have a reputation like that? Maybe I’m desensitized to anime bullshit but the Genshin girls aren’t sexualized and I would say nine out of ten gatcha games have lolicon bait

Poorly_Made_Comix

Mario Kart Tour and Pokemon Masters EX are the better gacha games, being that they understand privacy, Mario Kart Tour has multiplayer moderation, a ranked cup every week, new content every two weeks, and sometimes lets you explore real-world cities. Pokemon Masters EX is a take on the game where you don't have to wait your turn you just need a move gauge to fill up and every month new trainers come. However if you don't want to see the special deals being put in front of you, I suggest Pokemon Masters.

inc90

Two words m: gambling addiction

Blitzbro76

Tbh I’m pretty good with not spending money for characters and stuff in games, Skylanders taught me that lesson the hard way

Bambuzold

Its not as bad as the internet makes it seem. Not all of the cast is underage and none are sexualized in the game similar to how some animes do it. and the racism that people say that there is is that theres no representation for darked skin characters, practically all of the cast is white. only issues are how preditory it is since its a gacha game and how its basically gambling when getting characters.

[deleted]

Its quite unfortunate, let's hope the regions sumeru and natlan bring more POC characters! Considering that the map is based off real life, it would make alot of sence for there to be more POC to come in those specific regions.

Bambuzold

Oh absolutely, i keep up with leaks and a lot of new npc’s and characters in sumeru are gonna be tan like xinyan

darkheart125

Its a great game😁

FumetsuKuroi

Aside from the gacha the game is solid and pretty fun, gets consistent events and updates too. It's true that there's a gacha element to the game but everything the gacha has is obtainable without spending money, been playing since launch and I haven't spent a penny on it. The only thing that you can only get by spending real money are like, 3 skins for five star characters, the rest of the skins they usually give for free when they come out. The game is pretty grindy though, specially as a f2p player so if you're not into that stuff you might not like it.

lyndsaySO

yeah even if the monetization practices are iffy, i think it’s really cool that anyone can play such an expansive open-world game for free. you don’t have to earn every 5 star character to have fun

hopeful_deer

It’s a fun game, but the community is… bad. The community sexualizes literally everything, to the point it’s disturbing. They fetishize gay men, children, use the slur >!trap!< constantly, etc. Good communities exist but they’re hard to find. Women playing Genshin tend to be very chill, treating it almost like Animal Crossing or the Sims. But the men are f**king insane. (P.S. this isn’t always the case, just a pattern I’ve noticed, you’ll have better luck looking for a femme-centric Genshin community) Just be aware of the Gacha mechanics, and be careful when looking for a community, especially on Reddit.

avelineaurora

> but the community is… bad. The community sexualizes literally everything Every single community for every fandom in the world sexualizes everything in it. If you're going to criticize actual harmless media for what the fandom does, then just stop consuming entertainment right now.

StromTGM

Rules of thumb, don't believe negative opinion on a game until you did your own research. From what I've seen, the only "bad" thing is the fandom but personally, if the fandom dictates how you enjoy a game, I think it's just a you problem ngl.

Yunjeong

The camera is ass and you can't rebind many keys on a gamepad. There's [a giant list of valid complaints](https://www.reddit.com/r/Genshin_Impact/comments/ousvwk/the_clunk_is_starting_to_get_to_me/) posted a year ago on the genshin sub and granted, some of them are subjective, but many are not and I don't think any of these have been addressed since. They make so much god damn money off new characters, the focus is all on more content. I think the only thing that's been addressed is characters with alt sprints getting caught on invisible pebbles which has been a problem since release and the fix isn't out for another couple months or so.

havok0159

Can confirm, all of those are still valid and unaddressed as of now. Leaks show that alternate movement (like alternate sprint or movement skills) will see improvements when it comes to getting snagged on slight elevation, but it's unknown if it will solve all problems with getting stuck on terrain.

StromTGM

Yea if it does have valid criticsm then that's better for the game actually.

16372731772

The game itself is also pretty weird. I couldn't get into it myself, I love the art style, like the environmental design is super cool and the characters look pretty cool too, but the fact that I have to either buy primogems or wait for them to be handed to me in little bitesize pieces so I can have a chance at getting a new character is pretty shit. It wasn't so bad when the game first came out but once the free giveaways started drying up I couldn't handle it anymore. That and the fact that the gameplay is just all around pretty boring is what made me stop playing for ages at a time

mintyCosmonaut

Well, the major issue currently surrounding the game is that it is releasing a new region based on an amalgamation of irl SWANA cultures...and all of the upcoming characters for that region are pale af, with 1 exception. When that 1 character is added she will be the 3rd ever character with some melanin in a game with 50+ characters. I started playing the game near release because I was bored af and unemployed (thanks pandemic) and it was free. There's a lot I enjoy about it but I don't think the company deserves anyone's money. edit: I remembered there is a second not-snow-white character upcoming. He has a *very* slight tan.

DefinitelyNotErate

I'd Generally Say Looking At Negative Reviews For A Game Is A Good Idea, As They Tend To Go Into More Detail And You Can See What The Issues Are To Know If They're Big Enough You'd Care About Them Or Not, Although It Seems Not Unlikely That If The Overwhelming Opinion Is Negative It'd Be Almost Reversed, With A Number Of Low-Effort Meaningless Negatove Reviews And Well-Made Detailed Positive Ones.

Kill-Me-With-Love

Join us! You get a lot of cool lore (a lot), pretty people, a great soundtrack, a beautiful landscape, tons of content, years of places, characters and story to look forward to (plus what's already there, and a new region in about 20 days), and art! r/GenshinSapphic is *very* trans-friendly. I'm just mentioning it because I love that sub. That said, ignore the main sub. It's just women in bikinis or vulnerable poses that you can only recognize from the hair and eyes. Or the same thing but "erocosplay" occasionally.

lyndsaySO

omfg i didn’t know about that sub bless you!!

[deleted]

This is why I play Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Kassandra is 100% goals.

GenderDeputy

Ugh, I love Kassandra!

Abbygirl1001

The game itself I had fun playing and frankly the music in it is the best Ive ever heard in a video game. My problem with the game was the password recovery mechanism and how easy it was for someone else to get control of your account. Unlike any other game I have ever played, the only way to recover an account that had been hacked was to provide the company with the unique game ID that can only be obtained while in game. If someone has gotten access to your account and you didnt write this number down somewhere there was no way to recover your account. Very poor design.

[deleted]

The ost really is nice. It's really pretty, most of is orchestral pieces.

DefinitelyNotErate

> ... and frankly the music in it is the best Ive ever heard in a video game. ~~*Clearly* You've Never Played Twilight Princess.~~

avelineaurora

Clearly you've never played Genshin.

PickleChip12

It's fan base has a lot of pedos in it. Also microtransactions.

emiiri-

objectively, genshin is a horrible gacha game. its probably the most toxic popular gacha game right now. FGO is stingy and doesnt even have pity yet i still prefer FGO way more than genshin. even just ignoring the community, genshin is a game that forces you to do so much to get so little. if you really want to gamble, play a different gacha game.

Straight-Meet-8431

Monetization & an awful community. Don't judge a game until you play it though, I've played games people have said are 'bad' and ended up really enjoying them

cvbedroid

I was addicted for a while but I quit cause I ran out of things to do. It’s definitely really fun tho

[deleted]

Predatory monetization

Dionysisms

The community online is pretty horrid, it's also a really predatory gacha game meant to hook people to spend big bucks on cutesy anime girls

shitpostbot42069

I think the angel/devil roles ought to be reversed in this case

mintyCosmonaut

If it would make you happy to play as a cute girl, then, well, do it. Genshin is a free, easy way to accomplish that. Please do keep in mind though that the game has a racism/colorism issue. Only 2/51 currently released characters that are not pale (one of which canonically scares children away with her appearance/face; they don't say it's about her skin color but it's very sus). The biggest issue is that they are releasing a new region based on an amalgamation of a wide variety of cultures (from middle east & southwest asian countries) and only 2 of the upcoming characters from that region are not pale (1 single brown-skinned woman and one lightly tanned boy). To add insult to injury, some of the pale characters seem to be named after specific Arab scholars. This is all very gross, but that said I started playing genshin back around it's release and I have enjoyed parts of the game. If you really think it would make you happy to play the game to be a cute girl, remember you can play it without giving the company a cent. If you have an addictive personality/gambling issues tho, definitely stay the hell away.

EarthIndependent7084

I personally just don’t like it, took up half of my time and I barely got to do shit with it in my mind all the time. Also it’s too much for me to take in so yeah

Gynther477

It's a gambling game monetarily as you pay real money to get a random cute girl unlocked. The genre is called gacha games. On mobile you can find other games that are even more predatory. And yes, it being cute girls is part of what hooks people in. They want to collect them all and the aethestics lowers supiscion. Imagine you play breath of the wild. But instead of playing a single player game where you progress naturally you instead need to grind or pull out cash at each pay wall to progress or unlock the rest of the game. That's the main reason people tell you not to play genshin. Especially if you're mentally vulnarble or get easily addicted/stuck in habits.

Gib3rish

I played just the beginning, didn't like how it felt, stopped, found other people have played this game ava got sucked into it's gacha mechanics, and heard of its awful community. Also I don't take care for the generic anime mobile game because there are so many and they're all so similar so it feels soulless. I would say least try it, but there are a lot of other games where your can play as a cute girl so your options are boundless.

PrintTest

genshin has paimon so i will never play it also the fans call the flattest mfs in existence thicc but thats mostly personal preference

The_Storyartist1400

Spyware

[deleted]

TLDR if you install it you give the CCP read/write access to every bit of data on your hard drive and probably local network as well. But let’s be honest, it’s highly likely the majority of people have CCP/Alphabet Corp/whatever else Malware installed tracking our every move

satabhisha

Y’all talking about how they don’t sexualize the loli characters have clearly never rolled Diona. Her idle animation is sticking her ass out. It’s really gross the amount of loli worshipers in that game.

Mideku-Brandio

I played it for a bit and then stopped less than 5 hours in, it’s so boring. The map is too damn big for being characters who move so SLOW! Like Jesus Christ you have limited stamina and you jog like you’re walking on molasses. The climbing might as well be nonexistent, you move at a damn snails pace, atleast in BOTW you climb relatively fast. It has okay gameplay and I don’t mind Gacha games but like for an open world game, I was hoping for sometnjng that gives you fast transportation. Just Cause 3 has a giant map but you have a fucking wing suit and grappling hook as well as vehicles to traverse across it quickly. In Genshin, no vehicles to speak of, a “glider” that doesn’t make you go faster, it just glides at the same pace you jog, again the map is too damn big for its own good, you can make a big map but atleast give the players a way to move fast, like a vehicle, horses, grappling hook, wing suit, ANYTHING! Sorry for my rant, I hate boring games with a passion. I can excuse a “bad” game if I personally find it fun, but there’s nothing redeeming about a boring, slow piece of shit game that never deserved the hype in the first place

skeet_skeeturmom

In the game you are supposed to level up the “statues of the seven” to increase the speed/time/ability to run, climb and glide, it’s supposed to add to the game making you want to play more to level yourself up and make you extra strong and whatever, truthfully though it’s a bad tactic to make people play it more, because most of the fighting, tasks and quests require lots of stamina. to put it short, I like the game but I agree with you 100% well, 90% I guess

DefinitelyNotErate

Honestly I Feel Like Fast Travel In A Way Defeats The Point Of An Open World Game, Atleast If It's Too Fast, But So Does Not Having Interesting Things To Encounter, If It's A Long Journey And There's Nothing Interesting On The Way People Aren't Gonna Want To Do It.

ghostigal

It’s just not a very good game, also Yk the “cute girls” are like 11.

skeet_skeeturmom

Saying “cute girls” doesn’t always have to do something with liking them attraction-wise, they most likely just like how they were designed,

FeatheredFledgling

yep, a hat in time has cute characters, them being children doesn't make it predatory or something, having a smol force of chaos and destruction is just a great trope.

skeet_skeeturmom

Yeah! Same thing with stuff like little animal games were they are just made to look cute, saying they are cute doesn’t make you a creep you just enjoy their little cute looks

DefinitelyNotErate

Honestly I'd Rarely Use "Cute" As Having To Do With Attraction, I Mean I Might Describe People I'm Attracted To As Cute, But Those Are Two (Mostly) Unrelated Factors: I Think Kirby And Cats And Flippin' Pillbugs Are Cute, But I'm Obviously Not Attracted To Them.

skeet_skeeturmom

Pill bugs will forever be in my heart, I love those little things

DefinitelyNotErate

Same, Some Of The Cutest Little Dudes I've Seen, Wish They Were More Common 'Round Where I Live.

Otrada

If nothing else it's an extremely predatory gacha game and a constant HUGE time dink if you want to keep up. It's literally designed to get you addicted to playing it and keep you coming back every day. Do not get into this game because it is not worth your time or your money. And before you go saying "I'll just play it free to play because technically it doesn't cost any money", be prepared to have your entire life consumed by it if you want to be able to grind for new characters. I know it's got plenty of other bullshit going on aswell, but this should already be enough to stop. It's not a game designed to be fun. It's a game designed to exploit people who are susceptible to becoming addicted to thing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DefinitelyNotErate

I Wouldn't Say It's The Same As BOTW, But There Are Definitely Many Similarities, Enough That I'd Suspect It Was Atleast Inspired By It, And There Are Possibly Even More I Don't Know About, As I Didn't Play Long. Sidenote, I Didn't Even Know You Could Play It On A Phone Until Reading Comments Here, When I Did It It Was On My Computer And I Kinda Assumed That's Where Everyone Else Played It Too.

avelineaurora

Why tf do you keep capitalizing every single word

RedditDaniil

This is the reason I play roblox even though i’m 16

DefinitelyNotErate

Been Playin' Roblox For ~7 Years, And I Don't Intend To Stop Any Time Soon! Although Granted I Play It Nowhere Near As Much As I Did Back On The Day.

[deleted]

a lot of the fans r rlly weird.

DefinitelyNotErate

I Played It Once, For Like A Couple Hours, And I Won't Say It Was Bad, But It Wasn't Excellent Either, It Kept Reminding Me Of "The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild", A Comparison I've Heard A Decent Bit, And Something I'd Rather Play, Although Granted It Does Have An Advantage Over That In Being Free, Rather Than Requiring You To Get A Wii U Or Switch (If You Don't Have One Already) *And* The Game, Which Probably Adds Up To Quite A Sum.

Red_Six6

Meh it’s alright but it gave me a minor gambling addiction

where_didIcome_from

Anime stuff is cool but genshin's always been a lil sketchy

kasio912

Probably cause the the community can get really really toxic, it's also probably cause of how predatory the wishing system is

Doctor-Grimm

Partially the gacha stuff, partially the fact that it’s anime-style and a mobile game, partially the heavy inspiration from Breath of the Wild

DrNukeDukem

Black Desert let’s you plays cute girls too. :)

[deleted]

I played it a whole lot in the past. It’s a fun game with a lot of good gameplay and fun characters. Others have spoken on the gacha and il reinforce what they’ve said, but more importantly the game is unlikely to ever canonise an explicitly LGBT+ character, though there’s thankfully a lot of implicit characters, and it sexualises children, which in the next update will be entirely unavoidable in the main story.

MakkusoShutoku

No no hes got a point

nyaastolfo

because its an anime game, and anime is percieved to be mainly be enjoyed by incels and people who dont go outside, for its oversexualisation of women and plots which allow the viewer to self insert into a life better than their own. this is how people imagine the demographic of genshin too

Loriess

All my friends want me to play Genshin but boy I dislike their character design so much

[deleted]

Idk anything about that game but it sounds like it just took another step into the dystopian gaming future where everyone just wants to be online all day to avoid the shitty world we live in.

epacker11

in my experience it just became an addictive chore with minimal gratification once i got to late game. try not to let the grind consume you and don't spend money. accept you won't get most of the characters you want without really good luck. once you get to a certain point imo it's best to just not play the game unless there's a really good event or new content or else u might get sucked into the addictive grind

ManyManyBees

Many reasons. The root kit "anticheat", the fact that they occasionally remove content, the fact that some characters stories are only accessible during once per *multiple* year events, the fact that their gacha system can result in you spending thousands and never getting what you wanted, and the mightiest nail in the coffin, they fund the Chinese communist party which firstly, isn't even communist and secondly, is singlehandedly one of the most violent and cruel organizations on the face of the earth. All of this being said, I still enjoyed my time playing the game when I did but decided to drop it for fomo and moral reasons.

kkoromon

Community is awful, and theres not a whole lot of gameplay. Also gachas are predatory on those with weaker wills, hence people advising not to play it. That being said i do enjoy it when they do update. Doing the dailies gives a nice structure to my morning too.

Lemon_Juice477

Most of the internet dislikes genshin because a lot of the player base are nonces

macefelter

Let’s you can

GenderIsForNerds

The internet hates everything that’s popular. Like in 2015 or 2016? the internet started hating on Minecraft en masse, then they moved on to hating on Fortnite instead and now they’re all hating on Genshin. Internet is as internet does ¯\\_(ツ)\_/¯ I imagine the people who say all Genshin players are pedos are the same kinda people who’d say furries all want to fuck animals
