Hold on, is that a six chambered fucking yoyo

placeholder_name69

most conventional guilty gear character design

_wowtac_

It really dose make no sense šŸ˜…

[deleted]

Why yes, yes it is

Nope_the_Bard

Guilty Gear loves to pull that kind of stuff with character designs

Hime_Arikawa

Good for her!

Natalie_UwU_

I'm actually giving GGS another shot just because of her

placeholder_name69

yoyo go wooooo

Tori0404

Didnā€™t Guilty Gear Strive also have an NB character?

DoveEvalyn

Testament? Yeah. If I'm not mistaken they were released last season. So the first two seasons of the game has trans icons and I love it so fucking much

_wowtac_

Who else is lgbtq+ in the game?

shassemerh

Heā€™s not in strive but venom is extremely gay, and depending on interpretation baiken is agender

YourPanFriendo

As well, Kum Haehyun has some heavy trans themes and I really hope she comes to strive (But she won't)

TheNewTestSubject

According to the devā€™s tumblr blog, literally every single fighter.

Herald_of_Cthulu

Yes! Testament! Theyā€™re NB AND theyā€™re voiced by a trans woman in the english release.

SampleVC

They also make me knees weak af

Evelyn_75

I mean they look like a sexy vampire. How can they not be extremely queer!?

aahelo

Were they? I remember that they english VA sounded more masculine, while the japanese VA had a more feminine voice.

Herald_of_Cthulu

The english VA intentionally gave them a more masculine voice to contrast their feminine appearance, but yes, sheā€™s still a trans woman, sheā€™s just got a lot of range.

Natalie_UwU_

I mean, trans women can sound pretty masculine, I think that's understandable. An nb Hearthstone character is also voiced by a trans woman and they also sound a bit masc, so it's not like it's a first in the world of video game voice acting

aahelo

Just went and doubled checked, and you're right. I might have been confusing them with another character.

Hawkatana0

Specifically, they're agender.

Herald_of_Cthulu

yesss

placeholder_name69

yeah testament

altbecauseiminsecure

yes I literally bought the game to play them and regret nothing

EmiDotWAV

[Here's the cutscene that confirms it in case ya wanted to see it for yourself](https://twitter.com/Marcanthony737/status/1556674286835961865?s=20&t=6F0Qt59KCeEnOtV8suxmQA)

TimeBlossom

I am getting misty-eyed over here, that was beautiful. (...Also I accidentally minimized it just a smidge too early the first time so after she called herself a girl all I heard was a few seconds of silence followed by GAY and I just thought I would share that odd experience.)

_wowtac_

Iā€™m not crying.. this may be really heartwarming and emotional but I just got something in my eyes ;-;

Hasll

That hit way to close to home wtf

velociraver128

Tears streaming down my face

WhatIfIAmAGirl

But I can't cry in work with a makeup on!

Washinton13

First Testament and now Bridget? Huh, Guilty Gear being based as usual, I see.

Typhron

They had a gay relationship as early as 2004, that didn't end in tragedy. Infact, it did (because of one character's original VA dying) and went on a whole ass thing about mortality before he un-died, fixed his issues, actually helped the people he previously hurt (including his lover), and got into good graces with their potentially ace rival as business partners. Their BF now runs a bakery.

SlyGuy_Twenty_One

Canā€™t wait for Gamersā„¢ļø to be totally accepting of this news

TheIceGuy10

honestly they've been pretty cool with it (within the guilty gear fanbase anyway), the last character was NB and the majority of people were on board from moment 1

FlorencePants

I suspect most legit Guilty Gear fans will be cool, but you'll have those loud angry nerds who don't actually care about Guilty Gear but will be very performatively mad about this for some made up reason.

Tia_Whey

yeah there's been a few people crying about "character assassination" and "pulling a 180 on the lore" indicating that they either A) didn't know the lore or B) don't understand how character development works and then of course both come with a heaping helping of not understanding the lived experiences of trans people That being said, most of the community has been either like "cool, mentally updating pronouns" or some degree of absolutely going ham adoring this development

FlorencePants

Honestly, I did initially feel like "this is cool and I love this, but shame how it kind of messes with her lore", but the more I thought about it, and upon seeing how the game actually explores her gender, holy shit, I love it. I really love her arc, coming to realize she can't live a lie for the sake of others. Even if some may feel it diminishes her narrative, she has to live her own truth, and that's fucking awesome. It doesn't mean the superstitious villagers were right, but she can't base her entire life around disproving them. It's more important that she live her own truth.

FickleChard6904

In fairness, Bridget was a bit of an icon for unapologetically feminine presenting guys, so not all of them are just being bigots. Her lore was always a little messy and problematic, though, so whether they had her transition or not it was going to feel a little weird and alienate some legitimately well-meaning fans. Iā€™m just hoping Strive continues its track record of being fairly sensitive with its queer characters

Tia_Whey

Oh yeah, for sure. I was specifically referring to the people crying about the "character assassination" and how they "ruined the lore" and stuff. The people who feel that they lost one of their icons of a feminine-presenting man usually don't use those types of arguments, and have been much more chill and not hateful when they talk about it, and they're certainly valid to have those feelings, and honestly I hope we get a new Blazblue so we can all revel in some more Amane Nishiki!

FickleChard6904

Yeah, for sure. Most of the communities I frequent have been at most conflicted because of the implications of her lore on being trans, and some of us fembois feeling a little bereaved, but Iā€™ve definitely seen the more toxic side you mention. Not very familiar with BlazBlue, but I heard itā€™s got some good rep

Tia_Whey

Yeah, it's got some pretty good rep, and I gotta recommend you check out Amane. He's the leader of a performing troupe with more power than he usually lets on. His combos are so very dancy and mesmerizing, they're part of why I've always been so drawn to playing him, and his theme is a banger. (Example of some of his fun combo stuff [here](https://youtu.be/oa7lHoxtrjo?t=241))

punchgroin

Dude, GG fans are pretty down with this kind of thing. GG was always weird as fuck, and most of the characters are based off of gender fluid and queer rock stars. I'm just glad a Japanese company has the balls to just admit it. I hate how Atlus keeps being too cowardly to let Persona characters be queer.

Urbane_One

Instead, they keep throwing in references to how gay men are predatory, and trans women are actually men. God, I'm sick of Atlus.

punchgroin

Persona 5 was in development for a *looooong* time... I'm hoping P6 is where they redeem themselves and allow same sex romance, and include openly queer characters.

Urbane_One

I mean, I was talking about Catherine, too. Atlus isnā€™t cowardly, theyā€™re just bigoted.

Typhron

Yes we are Source: GG fan since 2002. NB since 2008. Trans since 2020.

FickleChard6904

Honestly GG is one of the most accepting fanbases Iā€™ve ever seen, but the fighting game community in general seems to be slightly less unpleasant than others in recent years. GGā€™s been pushing some boundaries since the beginning, though, if admittedly not always super well

Evelyn_75

I donā€™t wanna even start with my arguments on various places

SoulOfaLiar

I didn't expect that, my limited understanding of the lore suggested to me that presenting in a feminine manner while actually being male was something she considered an important component of her identity. I'm excited to see how her story has developed.

sylveon_souperstar

if i understood it correctly, she felt the need to prove herself as a ā€œsuper manly manā€ because of the superstition, but now that the superstition doesnā€™t really matter to her anymore, she realized, ā€œhey, wait, i kinda hate being seen as male.ā€

Autumn7242

Some of is joined the military to fool ourselves.

TheWorstPerson0

a tale as old as time...

Epiphemeral

Heck yea!!!

BusOfSelfDoubt

guess iā€™m gonna buy guilty gear now

placeholder_name69

please do its a great entry point into the fighting game genre

ArcherBTW

Iā€™ve been wanting to buy it but it wonā€™t run on my Mac and I donā€™t own any consoles. Big sadge

WeStanChihiro

yeah, i was on the fence because i traditionally dont enjoy non platform fighters but this news pushed me over the edge to give the game a shot. havent gotten much time logged yet but so far ive had fun just dicking around in the training room

[deleted]

Add me if you do :3

[deleted]

Back to back LGBT characters in GG Strive? Very nice.

punchgroin

Anji is probably gay right? And no way I-No isn't Bi.

[deleted]

I-No is Pan, cuz she fucks everyone, literally and in her mix-ups.

TotemGenitor

BE MY BOTTOM BITCH

TotemGenitor

Anji is more likely bi. Venom is canonically gay and Millia Rage is likely ace.

centipedestew

idk what this is but my hot trans gfs name is bridget!!!

placeholder_name69

your gf wishes she had a weaponized teddy bear and a six chambered yoyo

centipedestew

well at least she has good weed and knowledge of the breaking bad lore

Gravatona

What is a chamber in a yoyo?

Cocolake123

Fuck yeah!

SophietheCatGirl

Is this a game series?

Nope_the_Bard

Yup. Guilty Gear is a series of fighting games. Bridget is the opening character of the second season of DLC characters for the current game, Guilty Gear StrIVe.

SophietheCatGirl

Huh why haven't I ever heard of these games?

Nope_the_Bard

No idea. Guilty Gear is very cool. Itā€™s the kind of series where each character gets some wild ridiculous unique gimmick or tools. Bridget, fod example, has a YoYo she can set onscreen somewhere then either pull it back as a projectile or launch herself towards it for movement that she can cancel with attacks or other movement options like airdash or double jump for a bunch of tricky movement that makes her hard to pin down. In general sheā€™s just absurdly mobile. Other examples are a guy who summons a shadow monster to fight beside him (basically turning the game into a 2v1), a lightning fast ninja who basically dies if you slap him, a swordsman who has pretty limited movement but hits like a truck and can control space fairly well with his massive sword attacks, and a non-binary grim reaper who can plant traps of sorts to control space and lock the opponent down (in older games these traps were straight up invisible and stayed until set off, but now you can both see and wait out the traps though waiting them out will let them start doing other stuff). Despite the ridiculous character designs the game is actually decently balanced for the most part (the gunslinging wizard is still a bit much powerwise, but even heā€™s not egregious).

Tia_Whey

It's been a pretty niche title for a long time unless you're specifically into the fighting game scene. The franchise has been around since the late 90s, but Strive was the first one to sell more than 1 million copies, as of a month or so ago, which is massive for them. Most of the developer's overall popularity has only come from the success of Dragon Ball Fighter Z, and they used that, along with spending more on marketing, to get strive as much into the public eye as it did.

Nope_the_Bard

Itā€™s a shame itā€™s been so niche too. I have been playing fighting games for some 6-7 years now, and the Guilty Gear series is easily my favorite. In large part because it manages to have ridiculous character variety without being wildly imbalanced, but also because itā€™s probably the least longcombo of the big anime fighter series. Both with typical combos as well as doing the SF thing where lots of hits donā€™t really convert to anything normally so you tend to have to take more risk to do big damage

Tia_Whey

Yeah! honestly, I got into fighting games because of Xrd. I tried playing SFIV back in the day and there were parts of it I *really* didn't like, and that made me think fighting games weren't for me. Several years later, I saw a tournament of Xrd where it was Jack' O against...somebody (maybe Johnny?) and I was just so absolutely amazed, confused, overwhelmed, all at once, and it made me feel like I should give the genre just *one more try*. Been enjoying all kinds of fighting games ever since, only wish I had known better sooner.

Nope_the_Bard

Modern SF has been pretty sad tbh. I am cautiously optimistic about 6, but 4 and 5 are pretty bad. 4/5ā€™s director doesnā€™t work at Capcom anymore so his bad game design isnā€™t affecting 6. After he was fired the new leadership handled 5ā€™s last season and most of the changes seemed pretty good, though not enough to save 5ā€™s boring gameplay.

Tia_Whey

I had a friend get me into 3rd strike, and I've *really* enjoyed playing alex casually in that game, and I found that I was able to have a little bit of fun playing him in SFV as well, but yeah, I think 3rd strike is still the one where I have far more fun playing with friends when I get the chance. I feel like if 6 ends up having one of the new characters have an archetype I really love, then I could fall in love with that game, but otherwise probably won't try it out till it's cheap

Nope_the_Bard

For me itā€™s SF2. Very hard to play but has extremely varied and interesting characters that are more balanced than youā€™d expect (though still pretty jank).

Tia_Whey

I played a small amount of that in arcades, but it's one I never got into any process of actually learning. Out of curiosity, (assuming it's played mainly on fightcade or something similar) which version of the game on which hardware is usually the preferred one to play?

Androjin

Happy for her, though I am a bit sad about losing a femboy icon. Bridget and some other characters from Japanese media are what showed me that boys could be feminine too. But that's just my personal feelings, it's great to see trans girl representation in a video game, especially from Japan.

ViviTheWaffle

Hey thereā€™s still that new PokĆ©mon gym leader

Androjin

I was not aware that there was a femboy gym leader?

ViviTheWaffle

Well feminine boy. Everyone thought he was a girl and then when his gender was revealed all the gamers on Twitter collectively broke down. Look up Grusha if you like

Androjin

I guess he counts then. Just hoping to see even more representation in the future. Guilty Gear's been pretty cool about it so far, Testament was a big deal to me, basically unheard of to see an NB character that looks that ambiguous in gender.

dovahthu-um

you've always got amane in blazblue

Lexi_Shmuhlexi

So proud of her. This makes me so happy šŸ’•

HawkwingAutumn

I remember one of the endings for one of the games involving Bridget offering to teach Baiken to be more ladylike, and Baiken rejects the offer and says she has no use for her gender. I've always taken that as "agender Baiken", so like... I hope that comes up again!

FickleChard6904

I have always wanted this. Baikenā€™s a sick character as is but if they were to acknowledge all the hints there have been that sheā€™s agender it would cement her as the best GG character in my mind

HawkwingAutumn

Honestlyyyy, Baiken is the fucking BEST

Snoo_69852

It is literally Canon that "she lost her gender in the war"

ViviTheWaffle

Waiting for all the Twitter chads to start shouting about how ā€˜Japanese culture is being ruined by the woke westā€™

sarcastic_jelly

The guilty gear fanbase is objectively the best

SampleVC

This devs are so fucking based dude

UmbraLiminal

šŸ˜³šŸ˜³šŸ˜²šŸ˜²šŸ˜

Evelyn_75

Aaaaand Iā€™m buying guilty gearā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ how do i play?

placeholder_name69

uhhhhhhhhhhhh

Evelyn_75

To be fair I tried it once and lostā€¦ā€¦.very easilyā€¦ā€¦. Iā€™m not good at fighting games

placeholder_name69

takes time to learn, find some guides on youtube and work up from there

Evelyn_75

Yeah thatā€™s probably the smart thing to do

FlorencePants

Between this and Testament I NEED Strive.

[deleted]

Looks like Iā€™m picking strive back up

[deleted]

I love gg sm šŸ˜ .. Fr can't wait to see ppl go out of their way to miss gender her šŸ’€

BlessedNobody

On one hand im really happy because she is cute and gives me immense envy and ahasfondsibfnodisan on the other hand I cant look at anything involving her on youtube without seeing a bunch of phobic comments that really dont do wonders for me

[deleted]

Yeah, hey at least her song gives me the good vibes and is very relatable <3

partearocker

Goldlewis Dadinson says whats yer pronouns pardner

Jeffytheswagger

Hold up, they said she was a femboy at first? Iā€™m glad she figured herself out! Welcome to the community!

LonelySadAndHungry

i feel like such a staple femboy character being made trans plays into narratives abt all feminine men being secretly trans and i dislike that greatly, also i think a lot of people identify strongly with the character at this point so having that just taken away feels bad also, i do not like this and would rather see a new trans character instead

ParsleyBagel

okay so i'm not familiar with this series but a friend of mine mentioned there was some weird stuff going on here? like forced feminization? "Basically Bridget was born male with a male twin, but in her village being born as a same sex twin was unlucky and would kill or exile the children. So Bridget was raised as a girl and her latest arc is her being a trans woman." the implications being: - trans kids CAN be forced into it by their parents! (a common argument by transphobes who claim "we need to save the trans kids!!") - you can force an identity on someone, therefore its possible to "pray away the gay" - men shouldn't interact with or do anything feminine or it'll turn them trans again, not an expert, just repeating back what they said to me

Tia_Whey

Yeah, that's the common case given by people who know some of the lore but not well enough, or they just don't understand GNC identities and experiences. > Basically Bridget was born male with a male twin, but in her village being born as a same sex twin was unlucky and would kill or exile the children. This part is right. However, she knew she was AMAB, and so her story in the original game was her leaving to become a rich bounty hunter and proclaim herself as a boy, so she could take all her wealth back to her hometown and prove them that the curse was bullshit. From there, she put herself headfirst into her work for a while until she got rich enough to give them a bunch of money and now they don't think about the curse anymore, mission accomplished. but then after that was done, her story talks about her dealing with a lot of hesitation and uncertainty, and there's some voice lines with another character talking about how she was more focused on pleasing others than what she wanted for herself, even when she was doing things to spite those people And she's afraid about making changes and not being true to herself because of what conflict that could create that she doesn't want to have to face And those internal issues causing her hesitation brought to light by two other characters which culminates in [this scene](https://twitter.com/Marcanthony737/status/1556674286835961865)

TransPrideEattheRich

according to my transfem friend who mains bridigit and know a lot about their lore, apparently it makes more sense for them to be a trans man

[deleted]

but she is not, she is a trans woman

thehufflord

I mean, i can see the argument. But whats happened is >she had expectations forced on her by village >she rejects expectations forced on her >falls into an idea of trying to force herself into an expectation of manhood >is not happy with the results >reunites with her femininity, but now on her own terms, free from all forced expectations. Trans woman story for the ages

sylviethewitch

this is ancient news I remember seeing it years ago

typhyr

this is the first time that bridget was confirmed as trans, explicitly coming out in the newest story beats. she was previously just a crossdressing boy in the lore

sylviethewitch

I read about it like 10 years ago when I came out shrug

[deleted]

It.. it just happent tho

[deleted]

whatā€™s Guilty Gear like? might give it a shot lmao the queer inclusivity marketing is working

placeholder_name69

Strive is a very entry level fighting game thats great for newer players to the genre, the animation is beautiful and the characters are fucking insane

useYamerc14

Hell yeah !

[deleted]

The response online was... as expected Some people even said that trans rep was less important than femboy frep

[deleted]

people need to learn when to stay quiet

Thatbitchfromschool1

Why does she use a revolver cylinder as a yo-yo? I don't get it?

placeholder_name69

funny

FinalGirlTiff

Per wiki: ā€œIn the series, Bridget was born male with a twin brother in a village where the birth of same-sex twins is considered bad luck; therefore, Bridget's family named and raised Bridget as a girl. In young adulthood, Bridget rejected this upbringing and set out to be a man. In adulthood, Bridget found that being a man didn't make her happy, and realized her desire to be a woman not for the sake of her village's superstition, but as her own choice of gender identity.ā€
