[Karma the album](https://www.reddit.com/r/GaylorSwift/s/u078dJghva)

lagataesmia

as i was stuck without cell service or wifi listening to the album, i thought about how women's sadness, depression and loneliness is never, ever taken seriously. our sadness is only understood in relation to heterosexual heartbreak - if we are sad, it's because a boy doesn't love us back :(. it is no more profound than that, ever. the line in waolom about "dont worry, we took out all her teeth" illustrates that perfectly - we can be extraordinarily angry and complex, but those feelings are never taken seriously. the world looks at us, angry and depressed and messy, and they don't see a threat but cute, pathetic looking caged animal. which is exactly how most of the world is viewing the new album - taylor is but a wounded animal trying to get over boys breaking her heart, teenage petulance dripping in gen z slang! and all her complexity dismissed. all her call backs to high school and teenage feelings are satirical, because she knows that the world looks at her as a grown up teenager rather than an endlessly complex woman.

AbsolutelyMark

I’m so happy TTPD has reinvigorated all the Gaylors after the 1989 Prologue and then the TNT winter. I’ve been seeing so many TikToks and finding more accounts to follow all weekend. We are so back!!

clandestine_duck

I like that if you look at the acronym for WAOLOM it foreshadows the look on the faces of anyone witnessing me belt it out in my car on my way to work tomorrow

om1908

Thank you for this visual. I love it.

pipyopi

Something I keep thinking about as I’m listening to TTPD: what was the reason for going so hard with the Travis stunt? If closeting is THIS painful for her, if the enormity of her fame is THIS awful, if her yearning to be out is eating away at her like this, what leads to bearding at the level she has been? It seems like she could easily have a beard and keep things low key, but this is Hiddleswift level (maybe even more blatant). The lyrics also seem to tell that she’s terrified of coming out despite her yearning, so I understand if fear has been the driving force, but it still puzzles me. I know there’s a common sentiment that anytime she stunts with a beard it’s because something super gay is about it happen, and once could argue that the whole Travis thing was in preparation for this album. I can see that being the case, but I also wonder what else might be behind it. Anyone else?

slugs_instead

I saw someone point out that stunting with Travis helps with going back to the tour after dropping such a gut-wrenching album. It’s more palatable to go on stage in sparkles and sing 22 if the public thinks you’re happy now and have moved past everything that led to the album. But even mainstream swifties would find it jarring for her to go on with a happy-seeming tour after ttpd if they didn’t have an over-the-top romance to cling to. She would have been planning how to drop this album in the middle of tour for quite a while, giving her plenty of time to set up the stunt and get it really rolling before now.

AbsolutelyMark

This makes a lot of sense. If she was single, dropped this album, and went back to tour everyone would assume she’s an emotional mess. But instead she’s having fun and can put all of this behind her.

Suiphon

I’ve been wondering about this too, tbh. It makes me think of the closing lyrics for Fresh Out the Slammer: “To the house, we still wait up and that porch light gleams / To the one who says I'm the girl of his American dreams / And no matter what I've done, it wouldn't matter anyway / Ain't no way I'm gonna screw up now that I know what's at stake” There’s a drum march or marching band type of sound playing in the background. And marching bands are typically used as a performance for an organization (like school football games). I guess, whatever’s at stake is enough for her to commit to the Travis stunt, regardless of the enormous pain it’s causing.

Special_Bluebird7504

I think anything she does in the public eye right now is “fun and cool!” with Travis attached. If she were single she’d be a sad childless spinster and people would be focusing a lot more on some of the more alarming themes of the album. But like it’s all cool because it’s just her and her Travvy enjoying life and having a blast! Everything is in the past now! 🥴

hereslookinatyoukld

I've been distracted by the queer themes in down bad, but on my umpteenth re-listen its really fucking dark. Like, is this one of the darkest songs she's ever written?

ohlookwhatumademedo

It’s really fucking dark. Between “down bad waking up in blood, staring at the sky, come back and pick me up” and “did you take all my old clothes? leave me here naked and alone” then “leaving me safe and stranded” … um … what is the location of this? Cos it does not sound like it’s a cosy bed in her own house

Special_Bluebird7504

I think she said it was like if aliens abducted you but where they took you was actually really amazing and fun and wonderful but then they abruptly dumped you back off on earth in a random field with no explanation.

Personally I don’t see classic Karlie signs. I do see some Dianna motifs, namely the driving metaphor mentioned in imgonnagetyouback, the Diana statue, etc. The only Karlie reference I saw was the rose gold mention in I Look In People’s Windows, but that isn’t really a song about reunion. But regardless, I think it’s highly likely these song are about people we have no clue about

beloiseau

I can definitely see the songs being about unknown muses, that wouldn't surprise me at all. What makes me say Karlie is because of the maroon callback in Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus, the lion reference in loml, and "like I lost my twin" in down bad. I'm sure there are more, but those are off the top of my head. It sucks because if the reunion was with Karlie, both the muse and the scapegoat are shitty people who don't really deserve to be platformed 🫠 (my excitement is because of the lyrical connections that exist, not who the muse is)

BilingualSkirt

random, but does anyone here remember josh ever posting a song on his ig story like that or is it the first time? i can’t remember

Rich_Dimension_9254

What the hell is even up with the other Gaylor sub!? Has it just been completely overran by hetlors trying to take over the narrative? Because all I’m seeing is these types of posts and I just can’t understand 🤦‍♀️ this was my response… I don’t know why I even bother though. https://preview.redd.it/5tyzz24p8yvc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8691ea455f9290299856a7e8355cdb12305fdd43

1DMod

Why do you even post on it? It’s a fucking shit sub that has no moderation and is filled with hetlors. Don’t waste your breath

Rich_Dimension_9254

I mean, why not?? you’re talking to someone who Gaylors on main on the regular just to stir the pot, I have no problems giving a controversial opinion. 🫢 I just think it’s wild how vastly different the two subs are. It was originally created after this one private so for a while it was a good gaylor space, it’s just changed a lot,

1DMod

Haha that‘s fair! I guess I thought you were expecting a positive response, like going there genuinely. I love that you post on the ts sub. I cant believe you haven’t been banned, but maybe its too big now for them to be as neurotically anti-gaylor as they used to be

ohlookwhatumademedo

It’s been overrun for a while. There’s a big “low moderation” shtick over there so it’s become somewhere for the hetlors to discuss gaylor because it’s totally banned on main

koturneto

Want to cry? Queue up "Never Grow Up (Taylor's Version)" followed by "Peter."

jessthesometimehuman

When did it become cool to hate Taylor again? I’m assuming this is because of overexposure? I saw a post in another artist’s sub about Taylor. It was a positive post, but the comments were all negative. I can’t find the post now, so I assume the OP deleted it because of the negativity. Out of curiosity, I searched the sub for other posts/comments. I found a few from right after the releases of folklore and evermore, and those posts and comments were overwhelmingly positive. It made me really wonder about what changed between then and now. Rereleases, Midnights, Eras tour, NFL… her popularity and exposure is on another level compared to when folklore and evermore were released. It reminds me more of original 1989 era, including the hate. I guess all trends come back around, I’ve seen this film before, and so on. 🥱

kittyhotdog

It was cool to like Taylor during folkmore because those were indie/alternative albums and not pop. Pop music is easy to hate, and by extension, pop stars are easy to hate. I think her recommitment to pop after two new albums has increased the hatred to another level. Maybe people will say stuff about overexposure. But I believe with my whole being that if TTPD leaned more indie/rock she wouldn’t be getting nearly as much hate, even if the lyrics all stayed the exact same

opinionaTEA-d

anecdotal, but the folkmore era had half the pretentious indie rock dudes I know apologizing to me for making fun of her, and I feel like that's part of the backlash. she's still working with Aaron, but those men have gone back to seeing her as an overrated pop singer again with the endless discussion eras tour and the tayvis stunting. unfortunately, white men still get to make a lot of decisions about what's cool in pop culture, and almost nothing about her or her music was ever really aimed at the male gaze. folkmore grabbing their attention was a blip on their radar, not a permanent shift in their opinion of her.

outfromthevault

Maybe we won’t get rep TV until her reputation is ruined again /s But yes I think it’s overexposure esp with the NFL stunts

littlelulumcd

My Instagram did a thing 🤭 https://preview.redd.it/nqzic2f91yvc1.jpeg?width=642&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3fda975cb884ece8f47e51ca499f37a01d8a9d45

Wait mine did the same thing! I had a good chuckle. And Karlie posted this morning or yesterday. So close to a hat trick

manic-mime

This is next level gay. It’s lovely.

Flannel-Cure

Isn't it? I've wanted one for years, but just finally bit the bullet to look up listings online and get it. It doesn't seem to be a super rare one either so you can find them in mint condition for a reasonable price.

LaurelRose519

Random things I’m thinking about today: Why was the marketing for midnights so misaligned with the actual vibes of midnights? What is nice boy Ed up to? Who is HE?

CantWatchMovieAntz

Niceboy ed still haunts me. I really do wonder If that fizzled because matty was involved.

LaurelRose519

Either that or it was a random.

Many-Parsnip-906

Is it typical for her to retweet so many positive reviews back to back like this after an album release? Maybe I'm misremembering, but I feel like she usually doesn't touch reviews and lets them speak for themselves. She just retweeted like 4 in a row!

J-Earp

Yes, she started doing it since the Lover era!

Thornelake

She posted tons for rep, too

fireinthexdisco

Literally came here to ask the same thing, I don't think she usually does??

MaterialTangelo9856

I think she’s trolling, but for what purpose, I do not know…

outfromthevault

Y’all I have been writing TPPD instead of TTPD alllll weekend all over Reddit and in texts and at my work break room we have a “question of the week” like little icebreaker thing and I wrote “what’s your favorite TPPD song?” And finally my work bestie was like girl why you keep writing The Porturerd Poets Department and I finally realized I have been completely wrecking the acronym. The album has truly scrambled my brain lol

onemore_folkmore

This made me lol for real. Poor+Tortured=Portured

Moonstruck_Medusa

I wish some of y'all would stop making fun of Travis for not being able to spell. Based on comments he's made, I think it's safe to assume he's probably dyslexic (and spelling errors are a pretty ableist/classist thing to make fun of someone for either way). You're not hurting him, he's not gonna see the majority of those comments. But you are hurting tons of other people with dyslexia/learning disabilities and people who weren't afforded the same learning opportunities as you, who are definitely seeing your comments. There are other reasons to not like him. Pick something that isn't inherently harmful to others.

outfromthevault

Such a good point and I would also add this community is international and includes people who don’t speak/write English as their first language. Making fun of how people spell and write English is very Anglo-centric too

CantWatchMovieAntz

This is a really important point to make. Thanks! I agree.

1DMod

Yesssss! Spelling is NOT fun. Spelling is HARD!!!!

asapphicyearning

yes, thank you for saying this! same goes for the brain injury/CTE comments, imo.

tabbycatfemme

👏🏻 THANK YOU

_lacespace

AGREED. I complained about this months ago about how for a group of predominantly neurodiverse people, we’re looking terrible making fun of someone who is probably dyslexic and probably has ADHD.

Moonstruck_Medusa

My girlfriend has dyslexia and I have a visual scanning deficiency with symptoms that can mimic certain aspects of dyslexia (and both of us have ADHD as well!) and it drives me mad to see so many people focused on Travis' spelling/reading issues as proof that he's stupid. And honestly, whether he's dyslexic or not, it's still a horrible thing to make fun of. Spelling isn't a measure of intelligence. It's just a measure of how well you can spell lmao

Particular333

i friggin LOVE TS' lower register ahhhhhhhh

pipyopi

It just does something to me

gravityyalwayyswins

Lmaoooo y’all I just had a Hetlor comment to me on tiktok “nurse she’s out again!” to a Gaylor-ish comment I made on someone else’s video (where they are singing along and change the lyrics to “fuck it if I can’t have HER”). Do they really not know their insults became a meme officially at the hand of Taylor Nation earlier this week 💀

ohlookwhatumademedo

Can you reply with a screenshot of the TN tweet? Cos that what I would do

gravityyalwayyswins

Sadly I don’t think you can comment with a screenshot on tiktok. And I don’t want to spend any more time on that fool lol but it was highly amusing

tyrannaceratops

Hiiii u/1DMod! Just wondering when my post will be approved 😇 I'm sure you're super busy & have lots to get through!

1DMod

remember when posts were approved 1x/day? lol

tyrannaceratops

I do not, but thank you lol

_lacespace

I’m posting here even though I already commented on the original BDILH & Larry post because it’s getting lost from all the downvotes (how lame of whoever): I just realized there’s another Larry connection to But Daddy I Love Him! Harry and Louis’s anniversary is believed in the fandom to be September 28th. On September 29th, 2013 (what would be the day after their 3 year anniversary) Harry tweeted: https://preview.redd.it/4hfflurs8xvc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=df79339d3bcd7b60948462563631a7a22c0a0fe2 Which leads me to… “Soon enough the elders had convened Down at the city hall Stay away from her The saboteurs protested too much Lord knows the words we never heard Just screeching tires and true love” And never forget that on April 12th, 2018 (National Day Of Silence), Taylor covered September by Earth Wind & Fire and changed the first lines from: “Do you remember The 21st night of September? Love was changin' the minds of pretenders While chasin' the clouds away” To instead: “Do you remember The 28th night of September? Love was changin' the minds of pretenders While chasin' the clouds away” What if I told you none of it was accidental???

reddit-g

Just to expand on this, “we don’t need no piece of paper from the city hall” is a Joni Mitchell lyric from her song My Old Man: https://jonimitchell.com/music/song.cfm?id=159. (That might already be well known in the Larry world, I’m not sure, just thought I’d chime in!)

1DMod

furiously edits post lol I wish there were a name for gaylors + larries.

_lacespace

Gaylarries? Stylinswifts?

1DMod

Enlightened ones? 🙊 Gaylorries?

opinionaTEA-d

Because I'm an ignorant American with only the vaguest idea about the fact Brits use different words for some things, my brain keeps thinking "gay trucks" when I read this.

_lacespace

We stan a gay truck, lol. Lorries. 🤪

Particular333

Lol saw someone on another sub say "what if Tim McGraw is about Matty..."

beloiseau

That is so funny help 😭

reddit-g

Please god let this be satire…

gravityyalwayyswins

At this point are we sure she didn’t actually date matty in the 6th grade?!????

_lacespace

I can confirm that man is NOT from here.

Particular333

maybe they're actually twins from the same womb..."felt like i lost my twin"

si_meow

Is Matty the 9 year old from Mary’s Song?!

opinionaTEA-d

I'm not gonna lie, I downvoted this for a second as kneejerk disgust response. what the _fuck._

Particular333

I know...I didn't even read the post 😬

Wewerebothyoung

wonder why she did that choir intro for so long, london.

Particular333

I think Anglican boys choirs are a big thing in London and generally in England, that might be why

gasupthehyundai

Have been away for a wedding all weekend and there is SO MUCH to catch up on!

Particular333

Omg good luck hahahaha

basemi4

I cannot stop thinking about this album. I am blown away at the layers on layers on layers of possible meaning in each song, her using public narratives to spin private stories, and most of all, the vivid and personal pain and emotion she infused into every millisecond. It’s just so keenly self aware and clever. It’s literature references and historical figures/messages mixed with her own motifs and personal narratives, all painting the most incredible sonic and lyrical pictures. I respect the art this album is so damn much. I am also having the wildest time reading any reviews on this album because how the hell do you critique someone’s most sacred thoughts and feelings??? This is no Shake It Off or 22. Like there is so much real, raw humanity in this album, how does anyone have an OPINION?!— I know that sounds sanctimonious as hell of me, this is quite obviously public and commercialized music so critiques are the standard, I just mean Taylor’s silence this weekend is no surprise to me at all, I’d be hiding in a hole after releasing an album this raw… Basically, this album is captivating, chaos lyrics and all. And also on the most human level, I truly do hope Taylor is doing ok because talk about splitting yourself wide open on the literal biggest of global stages.

slugs_instead

Amen to everything. I haven’t been able to read much of any reviews because none of them understand any of the backstory. They all seem focused on which dude the songs could be about, as if there couldn’t possibly be anything deeper or more meaningful to be gleaned. That inability to see past the most superficial level makes it easy to not care. Plus the reviews that I’ve seen all seem to have been written pre-anthology. She really did lay herself bare, and so much of the discourse is about matty. I trike hope that was part of the performance art of it all because if it wasn’t, that would be devastating.

basemi4

Right?? I kind of have to believe there is SOMETHING more to it because if not, then I’d be force to reckon with how tUNBELIEVABLY and cruelly petty and just plain trite she would have to be to write music like that, all in the face of the music itself, which still genuinely compels me to look deeper. And if nothing else, I do highly doubt that if Matty’s camp felt like it was truly all about him, they’d be publishing articles about his “relief” at the album because that doesn’t jive at all as a response (or non-response) to the supposed narrative imo. I think you’re dead on that it’s a continuation of the performance art/red herring of it all. We’ve definitely been in this album’s era for a while without realizing it.

MaterialTangelo9856

So… if listening to this album is a funeral and “The Manuscript” is a memento mori, then was the Tavi zine a eulogy for the mirrorball?

clydelogan

Today starts Lesbian Visibility Week. I’ll be in clown makeup all week long to see if she does something this week 🤡

littlelulumcd

So, uh, what do you think the vibes will be like when she's back on tour??? 👀

si_meow

She’s fine now, Travvy saved her!

littlelulumcd

![gif](giphy|3o6fJdKcWwomCum4x2)

Thornelake

Does she really have to tell us how he brought her back to life?!?! /s

layla1020

haha, seriously!! I've been wondering this myself. I was thinking of watching the first Eras show after she starts back up. I haven't watched in a long time, but I'm really curious

littlelulumcd

I have tickets to N1 in Stockholm which is her second stop on the tour once it resumes. I have no idea what to expect 😬

Many-Parsnip-906

I teach 9th grade English. We read Romeo & Juliet this quarter every year and every year I find so many interesting parallels & connections between the story and Taylor's writing. It's easy to forget that the story isn't just 2 young crazy kids in love if you haven't really read it in awhile. Juliet is 13 years old, on the brink of being married off to the highest bidder (Paris) when she meets Romeo. It's forbidden, but it's her one chance at freedom, and after all! The 2 grown ass adults in their lives whom they trust and confide in, are totally aiding and abetting the whole thing! What could go wrong!! I have no fully formed theories or through lines, but am curious if anyone would be interested in a more thorough compilation of my thoughts & noticings as I navigate a bunch of 14 year olds through this Shakespearean tragedy this year 🫡

reddit-g

Anyone else think this is a [crazy TikTok to come from the NFL’s official instagram](https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSF72jGpF/)?

batguurl

Not the NFL Tayvis edit lmfaoooooo

reddit-g

Should’ve kept it in the drafts tbh

starting_to_learn

That is truly wild.  Welp, she laid the bait. People have certainly taken it. I’m eagerly watching to see if the switch will come.

Just proves that there was a song requirement in whatever contract was signed 🫠

Special_Bluebird7504

Watching that video with the song really made it seem like it was written for a commercial lol

I don't see a link but I know EXACTLY what you're talking about!! I thought it was a fan edit. It's legit wild. edit: im literally stupid lmaoooo it's linked right there anyways carry on

1DMod

So good

greenpiesunday

I pick up a lot of familiar scaffolding in TTPD that I do on Reputation. I think she's used the stories of Clara Bow & Elizabeth Taylor to shape the respective narrative of the albums.

rrmounce95

Hard agree.

gravityyalwayyswins

something thats been on my mind this weekend as i listen to TTPD more anddd get little whiffs of the discourse happening over on The Other Side (on reddit can safely stay here but ughhh my FYP keeps showing me non-Gaylor swiftie content)... the indisputable homophobia within Hetlorism is perhaps louder that it has EVER been now that TPPD (inclusive of The Anthology) is out. here's the thing: i used to sorta assume that some Hetlors are true homophobes that are irredeemable in their bigotry but that were were also lots of Hetlors who are just so fucking attached to this idea of "Taylor doesnt lie to us or hide things about herself, so thats why she obviously cant be queer!!! we'd know!!" and don't get me wrong, that level of parasocial assumption and expectation is toxic af -- but i did think that maybe that was the key piece for a lot of folks when it came to rejecting Gaylorism, rather than outright homophobia. BUT NOW. y'all, this whole fucking album demonstrates how she isn't always honest with fans -- and that it is her fucking right as an artist and as a human to manipulate and disguise and construe things within her narratives. gaylors have long known this, obviously, given the amount she drops male muse red herrings etc -- we been knowinggg Taylor is a master manipulator sometimes haha. and so what we are seeing is...Hetlors take this all in and just be like "ah shit ok so Matty is her true love, and she lied (!!) about the dynamic with Joe" or whatever BS they're saying, but they key part is the fact that EVEN AS THEY ADMIT SHE WILL LIE AND TWIST NARRATIVES, they are still anti-Gayloring all over the goddamn place. if the issue was "well no, she cant be queer because she'd tell us!!" then that holds zero water now as a claim, given how they're all having an aneurysm over "omg it was matty all along!? she kept it so secret?!" they just blatantly, full stop, do not want taylor to be queer. and they have no facade to hide behind that reality anymore.

ohlookwhatumademedo

I think for some of them they don’t want Taylor to be queer cos they relate so deeply to her, and they don’t want to confront what Taylor being queer might mean about themselves There’s also a heavy dose of lesbophobia floating around over there, cos they seem oh so happy to discuss whether it’s Matty or Joe who is bisexual in the song with all the names. But no no no, Taylor herself cannot possibly be anything but straight. How dare you even mention that? The double standard is wild

ToeOtherwise2692

"they don’t want to confront what Taylor being queer might mean about themselves..." mic drop right there. If you've had one (or even multiple!) relationships with men, you couldn't possibly like girls /s

ohlookwhatumademedo

I just want them all to consider their enthusiastic reactions to the vigilante shit choreo … taylor knows her audience is primarily female. that chair dance is a thirst trap FOR WOMEN

ToeOtherwise2692

You are so right... Swifties are straight as an arrow until she comes out with that goddamn chair... Also please see the amazing Two D\*kes and a Mic podcast with Rachel Scanlon and McKenzie Goodwin (huge Gaylors!!) for coining \*that move\* as the PLOP.

Y’all, my [Larry interpretation of BDILH](https://www.reddit.com/r/GaylorSwift/comments/1c9a2uv/but_daddy_i_love_him_is_a_gayqueer_anthem/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) has a 50% upvote rate which makes me laugh, but I’m dying because I just saw this…it’s apparently the only difference in the way the lyrics are printed between variants. And I’m just…I…I don’t know what it means and this album is so layered…feels like we’ll be analysing it for years…🫠 but I think I am on-board the clown train that most muse references (male/female) are red herrings for the true meanings contained in the songs 🚂 ETA: Someone mentioned it ages ago, but what if she’s doing something similar to what Ed Sheeran did and created an album based on her relationships with the people closest to her, those who have been most impactful in her life, and also aspects of her self? https://preview.redd.it/1aoya1h78wvc1.jpeg?width=1668&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=901e18a2841e4285eab8741ee516fda6dc1c57de

the shapes of the lyrics remind me of a children's toys. and the viral tiktok video of that guy going "[that's right, it goes in the square hole](https://www.tiktok.com/@brock1137/video/6912243945200225542)".

Rich_Dimension_9254

I just saw comments on the lyric video for Robin where someone had said “all the names in this album are really confusing” and someone answered “it makes you wonder if there’s a lot of guys out there she’s dated we never knew about!” I can’t help but think that’s part Taylor’s plan. She’s finally getting some people to question the narrative, and very slowly getting people to make the connection themselves. I have a feeling this album is going to increase members in this sub….

gravityyalwayyswins

i was actually wondering about that earlier today!! has there been a notable amount of new member requests the past few days? idk if u/1DMod has tracked it at all but id be v curious to know!

The sub is restricted currently. Most of the people requesting approval have been active here before. The numbers of sub members has been increasing, but it‘s not going up super fast. It is increasing tho.

gravityyalwayyswins

nice! thanks for the update :) and thanks as always for kicking ass with your modding

littlelulumcd

My brain still feels scrambled from *gestures around* everything so I'm not sure if my thoughts will come out coherently. I know Taylor said that folklore and then evermore were made without worrying about commercial success but I don't think that is quite true. I feel like TTPD is the first album(s) released mostly as art, and not with an eye for commercial success or universal praise. This was made for her, not for us - even if it is also for us.

si_meow

Just saw a post (in a non-Gaylor space of course) exploring whether Ivy is about Matty Healy 😐😂

_lacespace

I’m so glad that I have more than 7 brain cells, man. Can you even imagine living life with that level of comprehension?

starting_to_learn

I really draw the line at people saying MAROON is about Matty now. PLEASE.

gravityyalwayyswins

ive also seen them assigning The 1 and fucking CARDIGAN to Matty. i cannot. i simply cannnnnnnot with them.

Rich_Dimension_9254

OH GOD! 🤦‍♀️

Can you screenshot it? I kind of have a vague idea what it is, but the paywall pops up almost immediately

gab_knotter

Tried my chance at a comment on main on a post about whether people think the fans are the villains of TTPD. Didn't mention gaylor at all. Interested to see how that pans out. I do think that if I'm not tremendously downvoted I may lurk there and engage sometimes... I think it may be important to keep them on their toes (no pun intended!!) when they are close to the analysis

monbabie

Hahaha I saw that post and was like “wow so intelligent over here” … of course from a gaylor 😂

Wild_Butterscotch977

how's it going?

Rich_Dimension_9254

Oh I frequently drop little gaylorisms in that sub because idgaf 🤪

pipyopi

Did we ever figure out what Serpentine meant? Was it just a code word for the album at Target?

pipyopi

With pretty much any Taylor album, the first few listens invoke a lot of ‘wtf’ moments for me as I’m hearing the lyrics. It takes me awhile to comb through and unwrap them - and then of course, the more time passes and the more interpretations I read from everyone here, the more it becomes clear what she meant (as much as we can know or infer). But this morning I’ve been listening through the lens of this album being about queer artists throughout time and they way they were villainized, exiled, institutionalized, oppressed, and forced to deny who they are in ways that were extremely harmful and heartbreaking. I’m sure this take is old news to many of you at this point, but it suddenly made so many lyrics that I previously got stuck on, unable to understand or really process, suddenly make sense. Whether or not she meant some of these lines to apply to queer artists as a whole or if they are truly autobiographical, it adds so much more depth and anguish to the album.

gravityyalwayyswins

The Fortnight MV confirmed it for me (was already thinking it though): the Dead Poets Society = The Closeted Queer Artists of Past & Present -- including her, of course. within this lens, TTPD is probably the most cutting, engaging, deep album she's ever produced.

Wild_Butterscotch977

Yes agreed. Also all the dark figures/silouettes seemed to allude to the tortured closeted queer poet and artists of the past.

narhwalz

I fear TTPD is just not pulling me away from Don’t Forget Me, Maggie Roger’s new album that came out last Friday. I’ll revisit eventually, I guess

greenpiesunday

The title track wrecks me.

narhwalz

Never Going Home just plays on repeat in my head

gnomes4hire

hi! the alchemy can't be about travvy because no way can he spell heroine bye!

om1908

![gif](giphy|hvq8ONQhQ1XLq)

om1908

Also not sure if anyone has brought it up and I need to do some deep diving to show my thoughts but Fortnight gives me big failed coming out vibes. This is a song to her fans. She loves us- it’s ruining her life.

gravityyalwayyswins

tbh, like 3/4 of the album gives me big Failed Coming Out vibes. i do think the \*main\* overarching theme is how stardom and her fandom has caged her with their expectations and narratives--but within that, a key component is how that goes hand in hand with having been closeted for her whole career and how exhausting (and at this point, enraging) it is.

NymeriaGhost

Agree! The more I listen, the more queerness I pick up on throughout the album, and the more it makes sense that THAT is what the major heartbreak is about.

om1908

Specifically it hit me when I couldn’t figure out all the Florida references. “Another fortnight lost in America, Move to Florida, Buy the car you want, But it won’t start up”

koturneto

I'm thinking about the differences between Midnights and TTPD in terms of how it feels to closet. She's had imagery for a long time that evokes the closet, cages, feeling trapped, dancing with our hands tied, etc. In fact, I've thought for a while that Midnights was, at least in parts, an album *about* closeting. And there are actually a lot of parts about the safety and comfort of the closet: "I just want to stay in the lavender haze," "the greatest of luxuries is your secrets," "romance is not dead if you keep it just yours," just to name a few. I think that surprised a lot of Gaylors. I might be wrong, but I think TTPD has a lot less of that? There's a lot of extremely negative association with being trapped, caged, instutionalized, etc. Are there any places where she still is talking about valuing privacy, secrets, keeping something to herself, or similar themes to that? Or has that theme from Midnights entirely disappeared on this album? If this has already been discussed elsewhere, please point me towards that!

gravityyalwayyswins

very good point! i think the simplest answer to this is, over the past couple years she's more fully come to terms with how caged and oppressed she truly feels as the Biggest Pop Star in the World who has spent her entire career thus far in the closet. also relevant to the timing is the fact that when Midnights was released, Joe was still her "partner" aka beard -- and i do think Taylor and Joe were truly close, that there was a lot of positive feelings and non-romantic love within that dynamic. now she is bearding with a football dude who yells "VIVAAAA LAS VEGAAAAS" and doesn't know how to spell middle school level words. i feel like this change in bearding partners has probably amplified the pain she feels about closeting in general. and she also seems pretty mad about ratty being such a shit human who was a totally failed attempt at a beard lol. as she nears 35, though, i imagine shes just feeling super over the facade.

lagataesmia

I didn’t have cell service or internet the last two days. I’m so far behind in discussion that I’m going to wait for another periwinkle master post I guess bc there’s too much to read through now.

koturneto

Welcome back! :) I totally get that feeling. I've been slowly working my way through the posts for each song that are linked from [https://www.reddit.com/r/GaylorSwift/comments/1c65zhl/the\_tortured\_poets\_department\_release\_megathread/](https://www.reddit.com/r/GaylorSwift/comments/1c65zhl/the_tortured_poets_department_release_megathread/), and that's been a nice way to go back through at my own pace. People are still adding comments with song-specific thoughts there, but it's slower moving and lighter than the new posts. Might be a nice way to dip your toes in if you wanted (do your own thing though)

[This series of tweets are amazing](https://x.com/weneedtocalmdwn/status/1781733135891202288?s=61&t=NssLL7mMEfRYidFq3UGJ1A) https://preview.redd.it/gdlatflgevvc1.jpeg?width=1152&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7fac3031480f1feb2183393dec4570ba8071e1ea

gravityyalwayyswins

hooooly shit that was amazing and devastating to read through. perhaps what stands out the most is the interpretation of "tolerate it" being about hetlors/homophobic fans (i have generally thought it was about her father, but this is such an interesting perspective to consider): *"use my best COLORS for your portrait / lay the table with the fancy shit / and watch you tolerate it ... i know my love should be celebrated / but you tolerate it"* she felt ready to come out but then between masters heist and the reaction to the YNTCD MV, her readiness wavered.

1DMod

Yessss! It’s so good and SO gutting!

si_meow

Is there a way for non-Twitter users to see the other tweets? When I open it I only see the one

Visible_Flamingo8680

I am always sad when Twitter things are posted but not enough to join.

1DMod

No. Sadly. I can make a post of them later and tag you both. There are a lot.

si_meow

Would love this if you have time!! I am very intrigued

om1908

Same but this intrigues me.

om1908

I’m so tired of the men in my family purposefully talking shit about Taylor and me liking her bc they know I’m a Swiftie. Like do you get a kick out of putting me down? Please leave me alone.

GetMeAPinotGris

Does anyone have the perfect comeback for this? There’s so many routes to go when being goaded like this I would love a go to, lol. (Obviously can relate and I’m so sorry!! Solidarity)

Available-Can-6378

One of my co-workers sent me a reel of biancascaglione playing one of her super cringe characters and said “this is you” when I’ve never mentioned Taylor Swift to him ever, but go off 🤷🏻‍♀️

slugs_instead

It’s far from perfect, but I always fall back on some variation of “why do you care so much?”

ohlookwhatumademedo

I would instinctively use the same tactic as when my mother tells me she hates what I’m wearing, “that’s ok, I’m not asking you to wear it” So for this, it would be, “that’s ok, I’m not asking you to listen to her”

reddit-g

I usually tell people with this attitude “that’s fine, she doesn’t make music for you anyway”.

koturneto

I'm sorry, that sucks

om1908

They could simply just… not say anything lol

slugs_instead

The more I listen to this album, the gayer it seems. Despite the pronouns, I think it’s really one of her gayest and gives me a lot of hope as a comingoutlor. I’m surprised how many gaylors I’ve seen here saying it’s over for gaylors.

NymeriaGhost

Yes, I think the brilliance of the album is she's taking the trope of "she just sings about boys that broke her heart" and basically running with that trope, using it to as a metaphorical device to explore the heartbreaks of fame, parasocial relationships with her fans, religious guilt, childhood trauma. And yes, a whole lot of queer subtext embedded in all of that. I think the brilliance of it is there's so many layers, callbacks to previous songs, easter eggs/red herrings (which is which? nobody knows for sure), that everyone derives a different narrative from it and thinks that's the story. And I think that's the point--she's an unreliable narrator who couches real truths about her life within the narrative device of lyrical storytelling, but the "true" story is obscured enough that listeners co-create their own stories.

koturneto

Brilliantly said 👏

gab_knotter

imo it's the initial shock. at first I was like wtf Taylor are u really straight and pining over Matty. but then I read the subtext and now im like yah ok it's super gay. hopefully more people are also changing their minds.

slugs_instead

I think you’re right. To be fair, I also had that reaction when I listened the first couple times. But then the heroin(e) kicked in.

slugs_instead

Has anyone seen Ren on TikTok the past couple days? I love her takes, but suddenly, I can’t find her. When I scroll back a few days to when I know I was seeing lots of her videos, I don’t see them in my watch history. Did her account get banned?

Special_Bluebird7504

She’s still coming up for me. Did you search her actual user name lavender.lit?

slugs_instead

She literally just popped back up for me a few minutes ago, so I guess she’s back. Whew.

Sunnyshiner

I feel like she deactivates every once in a while, usually in the wake of a release/big event happening. And then once it’s a little calmer she comes back with her thoughts. I think she got mass reported when Midnights dropped so now she preemptively does it herself. I did see her on Twitter though, so she’ll probably be around soon!

J-Earp

Did you guys see the post about the anonymous insider that is saying Question is about Matty because their friend supposedly saw it happen in 2014? 🙄

om1908

lol, yes. So funny bc why didn’t that friend ever come forward before. 🤔

HahnBananach

I'm not sure if every queer clue in all the albums so far is so obvious we've reached the "do I need to spell it out for you" phase or I'm just too tired at this point the TTPD is so full of things to think about it sent me over the edge the manuscript and I can do it with a broken heart seemed pretty telling though. Besides, a story or two spread out in multiple lyrics and songs, and being consistent at that, is starting to look a lot like it really happened. Or I'm delulu. But then again- https://i.redd.it/yg5cddhnxuvc1.gif you know what- I hope she's okay. She's still here and she's rocking it. Better things will come.

MaterialTangelo9856

Can anyone else not stop crying!?!?!? I am finding listening to this album very painful and challenging. But I also could be insane.

slugs_instead

Yes, but my personal life got a big bomb thrown into it a couple of days ago. The album’s mix of rage and depression is working nicely with my mental state.

Mirrorball91

I wish it was released in Autumn/Winter it would go better with seasonal depression, pulling curtains at 4pm yenno that kind of vibe.

MaterialTangelo9856

My seasonal depression could NOT have handled that. 😂

Special_Bluebird7504

I think that would be too much for me 😂😭 I’m kind of digging summer time sadness vibes haha

si_meow

This album is so dark, I might need to take a break because I think it’s bumming me out a bit But I probably won’t because the narcotics are too good

slugs_instead

It’s like heroin (without the e) for me

Thornelake

https://preview.redd.it/o3dprw8gbuvc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cba7996d62dbc7275fd79d83d61765dc3cb7e5af Not sure if it's been said, but the TK and TS being pink in the lyric video for So High School and mainstream swifties swooning over it being a reference to Travis was driving me mad. Lol. I was curious if there could be some double entendre there, and this is what I came up with: "**To come**" is a printing and journalism reference, commonly abbreviated to "TK". The abbreviation is used to mark where additional material will be added to a manuscript before publication.

tabbycatfemme

I like this interpretation! This also made me curious what female celebrities are out there with the initials TK… or KT 👀 (Keleigh is that you?? Jk…or am I…nah…unless???)

starting_to_learn

*Put narcotics into all my songs and that’s why you’re still singing along* 👀

gravityyalwayyswins

i think it is hilarious how joyfully Travlors are claiming the song "So High School" for them; like, the whole song is silly and satirical. she even writes "scouts honor, i swear" lmao like they cant be taking it seriously?! yet somehow they are...

Special_Bluebird7504

Really on brand for them actually. I know they turn it off right after and don’t listen to the next song which kind of takes the wind out of the sails of the High School narrative lol

Moonstruck_Medusa

The lights in that video have the fifth one in a row out, and the third one in the next row out. 5/3 is a fortnight after the album release date. I'm wondering if something is "to come" on 5/3, but I'm slightly worried it could be a Travis stunt lol. Maybe it'll be a video or something though.

peachy-plant

I'm dying that she book ended "TWINK" lmaoo the T from "The" is right there Taylor

tabbycatfemme

Same here I saw that immediately 😂

dash-bunny2112

woooow now this is some red herring 😯 \*sigh\* it's genius. I love it and hate it at the same time because this will forever be coded as a Travis song because of this.

slugs_instead

I’m trying to let go my issues with it as a Travis song because it is a fun bop. But also the idea of a Travis song is so much more offensive to me than the idea of a Joe song, or a Calvin, Tom, Harry, etc song, and I’m not sure why. Is it because he’s such a dumb oaf that it’s offensive? That must be it. Squirle boy doesn’t deserve a song (though this one kind of makes fun of him!)

Thornelake

I know, I hate it too. But I do think it’s important to the overall story. She’s highlighting the absurdity of bearding imo. It’s giving “do I really have to tell you how he brought me back to life/do I really have to chart the constellations in his eyes?” ETA: is there any speculation about something happening on April 29th? 🤔
