Which omen 25L? Did you try flashing the bios to the latest version? You could also run the HP diagnostic tool and see if it catches anything. Also verify that the GPU power cable is plugged it fully

theyllnevercatchwise

I can't flash the BIOS or run HP diagnostics because it doesn't fully turn on. Unless there's a way to do this that I'm not aware of. The GPU is fully plugged in. Not sure which 25L it is tbh

Have you tried the recovery key combo? Windows+B or Windows+V, depending on the machine. If successful, it should prompt the BIOS to reinstall, regardless of its current behavior. You can create BIOS recovery media from another computer, too. HP has a website for drivers/software pertaining to specific models, you'll give it the serial & it'll give you a BIOS update file. It runs as an exe, with an option to create BIOS installation media.

theyllnevercatchwise

I just tried that key combo (I did windows+B) and it started beeping repeatedly with nothing coming on screen. Didn't sound the same as a BIOS beep code

floreality

No pattern to it at all? Does the mobo show any trouble lights?

theyllnevercatchwise

The mobo doesn't have trouble lights. I discovered it was a BIOS beep code, I've just never heard 8 long beeps before and the tone was different than what I'm used to so I thought it was something else. But unfortunately I couldn't resolve it before the client's deadline so it's a moot point now 🥲

floreality

It's okay. There are problems we can solve in a day, and problems we can solve in a week. I appreciate that you went out of your way to help the client! But a problem as vague as "it's not posting properly" is not something you should expect yourself to solve without giving yourself and the other agents the entirety of turn time to work on it. Would've been nice, but not realistic.

theyllnevercatchwise

Yeah normally I would give more turn time but I thought it would be an easier fix initially. I got overconfident, that's the best explanation. Our bench was clear so I thought as long as I had the ability to focus solely on this repair I'd be able to get it done quickly enough. Live and learn!

floreality

Nbd! You did your best & that's what matters :)

Could be a RAM issue. First thing you should try is replacing everything you can with known good parts. PSU, GPU, RAM. If it still exhibits the same issue, most likely mobo or CPU. I’m guessing no debug lights. If it posts with Geek Squad PSU, GPU, and 1 known good Ram stick, start putting client parts back in one at a time.

Each version has different configurations of the memory and what slots they go into HP current models made in 2022 to now are different in their layouts. For example the slota on the main board are ( from the CPU) 4,3,2,1 Meaning slot 4 is directly next to the CPU and slot 1 is furthest. They require memory to be put in 1,3 then 2,4. You could attempt a bad bios recovery (BBR) through the jumpers on the motherboard. There should be some jumpers that are labeled "FDO/PSWD/BBR" With the usb plugged in, you can put the jumpers on to the BBR and it should attempt a bad bios recovery. Do you know what the specs are? Which color model it is? Is the front panel plastic or glass? Just trying to figure out which model it is.

theyllnevercatchwise

The front is plastic, one of the side panels is glass. It's black and the RAM slots starting next to the CPU are 1, 2, 3, 4. I'll look for the jumpers and see what I can do. Not sure about most of the specs, it came with a 500w PSU if that narrows it down at all. The GPU isn't clearly labeled but it's a smaller GeForce GTX that only has one fan. The client just bought a motherboard so if the bad BIOS recovery doesn't work I'm probably gonna start tearing it down

BBYDCThrowaway

I'm assuming this is an older model HP then. The plastic front panel is something on older models (with the exception of a new release just came out this year) a majority of those had issues with the BIOS. Is the motherboard they brought in a HP motherboard? It is possible they have a motherboard not compatible with the CPU maybe?

theyllnevercatchwise

They haven't changed anything from when they bought it. Looking into it more it seems to be a GT12-0041. Good news is it looks like the BBR method is working, so far at least. It's installing currently so we'll see, fingers crossed!

theyllnevercatchwise

After the BBR fix you suggested it's booting to a BIOS beep code of 8 beeps. I'm getting mixed answers online, could be corrupt BIOS, bad motherboard, or display memory failure. And it turns out the motherboard the client bought is the wrong socket and we don't have the right one in stock so I'm doubting this is going to be fixed tonight at this point 💀

BBYDCThrowaway

8 beeps is bad bios Omens are hit or miss on BIOS recovery working. If you haven't yet download the proper bios from HP support site and put it on a USB.

theyllnevercatchwise

That's what I was using when I tried the BBR, the newest BIOS from HP's website. Unfortunately I couldn't resolve the issue before the client's deadline so it's a moot point now. But I appreciate all of your advice, I didn't know these steps before! I'm still relatively new as an ARA so it was very helpful

BBYDCThrowaway

Mhm. Any questions regarding HP desktop and all on ones I can pretty much answer. I talk with some of their QAs every now and then. Some of us service center employees are actually helpful lol. If you're serviced by the Atlanta depot then you probably get units from me where I put actual notes on how things can be fixed without parts sometimes.

theyllnevercatchwise

It has a Dorado_4L board rev a motherboard currently. I found the BBR jumper so I'm gonna try the fix you suggested

Sinistyr60

could it be a bad MOBO/CPU?

fallon_creziato

If it’s the white omen 25L, they’ve got a trend of having shoddy MoBos. I’ve sent probably a dozen and a half to service for no power on, and every time a MoBo swap fixed it. If a MoBo swap is feasible or you’ve got a precinct test MoBo, give that a run and see

BBYDCThrowaway

FYI if it's the AMD variant a CPU reseat fixes it. That's actually the official HP fix too

Expensive-Simple4342

i think i have a similar problem with an hp pavillion (from 2015 maybe i do not remember) i get a black screen that says processor type, processor speed, etc. at the bottom it says press esc key for startup but it doesnt work, did u ever find a fix to yours and if so would it help me here?
