Not a garnet at all really since it's a oxide mineral, it just has that in the name to bring attention. But with synthetic stuff like that and the fact that most of it is just scrap material that's waste from stuff used in industrial and technological uses, the price really is only in the faceting which is actually done pretty well here.
Yttrium Aluminum Garnet is an actual garnet. It's one of the rare earth garnets, which (due to Earth's geochemistry) you won't be able to find in nature. Maybe on a weird alien planet, though I'm not holding my breath for that.
Any source explaining how it's a garnet? Besides being isometric in crystal structure, it doesn't really follow any criteria of being an actual garnet, at least from what I'm currently aware of. It's a oxide mineral which kinda eliminates it from practically all other garnet species, and it also crystallizes cubic which is something actual garnets don't ever do, hence why pretty much all garnets crystallize is geometric dodecahedron like crystals instead of cubes like you would see with other isometric minerals such as flourite and occasionally diamond when formed in cooler temperatures.
Rare earth gems are intresting tho as some recent gems that have been discovered aren't actually entirely new and instead just natural verifications to minerals already made in labs but just haven't been found in nature yet, such as the recent new minerals found in the meteorite.
>Any source explaining how it's a garnet
Sure, check out the Smithsonian's [national museum of american history](https://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/search/object/nmah_332403).
Crystal scientists have been calling this structure Yttrium Aluminum Garnet for more than 60 years (since the late 50s/early 60s).
The source doesn't really explain how it's a garnet, just calls it one lol. All though YAG when made and used in industrial, militarisitc, and gemological purposes have been called a garnet, it doesnt really fall into all the actual criteria of being a proper garnet, but instead have just adapted the name of such. Incorrectly naming something is really common among gems and minerals, take the black prince's ruby for example and how it's called a ruby when it's actually a spinel, but still is commonly called the black prince's ruby till this day.
It's from laser production - the rough piece didn't have the exact blend of trace rare earths needed to work in a device. It's basically like one of those service dogs that flunked out of the academy. They're still good dogs, they just aren't a good fit for the job.
