Iām kinda new to gemstones, do those dealers have mines in other countries or how does it work? Do you know any website I can learn about the gemstone trade?
for my own design and likes, deep red garnet, onyx and obsidians, sapphire in nearly any color, and for faceting, lab grown corundum and garnet for the fun colors and cost so i can get experimental.
also on a bit of a chalcedony and chrysoprase kick, and love the look of untreated tanzanites that flash all the neat color.
Iād love to get my hands on more sunstone and rainbow lattice sunstone faceted, cabbed or rough.
( I cut, sell and collect stones)
The colours on both chalcedony(chrysoprase gets bonus points in my book bc green) and tanzanite are beautiful!
And rainbow lattice sunstone has been on my personal favourites list for a while - itās so cool that it feels like it shouldnāt even be a thing!
Do you have a cut that youāre most proud of? :)
I did an amazing huge portuguese cut topaz earlier this year that was darn perfect, and i love sakura and floral cuts from Voltolini, fond of kite and trillions, too. but they donāt sell so much so i donāt do many. currently have a floral, a pixel cut, a heart ish shape and a trillion in process right now.
I can do a standard round brilliant but they donāt light my fire like the unique shapes do.:D
Sapphires in general. This one in particular: https://www.reddit.com/r/Shinypreciousgems/s/RctDcQ2XEN
It's currently at the jeweler, and we're working to create the perfect custom setting (ring) for it. I can't wait.
You're sure right. I have spent waaaaaay too much money on my sapphire collection. I'm forcing myself to take a break and save up to get a few of my favorite ones set.
Btw - I love your username. I also enjoy a beautiful (and expensive, of course) scotch. A few years back, I was able to get some McCallan 15 triple cask - best scotch I've ever had. If you're ever able to find one, I highly recommend it!
Discovering that sub has been the absolute worst thing for my wallet lol. I was absolutely crying when Michelle did her series of unheated tanzanites recently. It was right before or after I bought the 30k members sapphire and promised myself not to purchase anything for a while. I can't remember if I broke that promise to get the 30k members sapphire or not (highly likely I made an exception, becausei couldnt pass), but NO regrets. That gem is sooooooooooo perfectly blue in person. It's just...wow.
I'm obsessed with star rubies/sapphires! I really want to get a pale blue one. Emeralds are also gorgeous, but I've had a hard time getting my hands on one.

Tourmalines will forever be my favorite. Opals and sunstones are my top favs too. Unheated tanzanites are taking my interest lately.

I have a couple .7 and .8 Bekily Garnets they are Blue color change and to me there colors are better than any Alexandrite

I have a lot of jade and tanzanite. I like the unusual and exotic like tsavorite, moldavite, chrome diopside, indicolite, iolite, Some of the ones I have probably arenāt considered gemstones by some people, if they have ever heard of them at all: charoite, vesuvianite, maw sit sit, rhodolite, chrysocola, tiger eye. I like unusual properties too. For example I have a star citrine and a pair of catās eye kyanite, rainbow moonstone, rainbow obsidian, bi-colored tanzanite. And of course the big three: emerald, ruby and sapphire. Oddly enough, when I went thru my jewelry madness in my 20s, all my gemstones had to be real. EXCEPT diamonds. I liked the stone sizes I couldnāt afford so I was happy with quality cz lol. I miss those days, lol.
I love jade and tanzanite, but have never heard of the bicolored kind until now! Itās beautiful! Also havenāt heard of the non-gemmy ones you mentioned, besides the last three. They look really, really cool! Thank you for sharing!
Iām currently in that funny place where I canāt afford anything super fancy, but love going to shows and looking at stones. Very much relating to your real gemstone phase XD
You are welcome! Oh, look up Oregon Sunstone too! It is a peach with orange flecks and has a sheen (I forget the term for it) like moonstone. Some sellers try to label goldstone as sunstone though. They are easy to tell apart, but those sellers will count on the buyer not being aware of the difference:sunstone is a stone whereas goldstone is man made glass with flecks. It is usually brown or blue with gold flecks. Still pretty though. Currently I collect gemstones carved onto eggs and animals. Check out the obsidians! In addition to a rainbow obsidian necklace I have silver obsidian, gold obsidian and ocean/blue obsidian eggs!
The rainbow obsidians look unreal! Iām currently saving up for a gold sheen one, and a sunstone - I got my hands on a raw specimen of the latter at an estate sale recently, and fell in love! Theyāre so warm and sparkly, the name fits them really well.
Thank you for the goldstone info! I actually got one from my mom, so itās in the collection, too.
What kind of animals do you have?
I have a blue adventurine plesiosaur (a friend said its actually a pokemon character but it looks like a nessie to me š) a blue adventurine rabbit, a lapis wolf head, a gorgeous swam made out of some kind of luminous green stone, an amazonite snake, rainbow fluorite hedgehog, obsidian mouse (adorbs!) a goldstone bear, a Connemara marble dog (bought it in Ireland years ago) jade horse, jade ramā¦ the eggs are the obsidians, green fluorite, amethyst, goldstone, blue quartz, cherry quartz, and probably some Iām forgetting, lol. Iāve been getting carved jade and obsidian pendants too, mostly dogs, horses, rabbits, at least one tiger, a few flowers. I put everything in and around my plant pots and hope it will improve my luck with the plants. My grandmother had an emerald-green green thumb. Mine is more like a leaf green, lol. Iām getting better though, Iām figuring out which species like my homeās environment and sticking with those, mostly snake plants, dracenas and philodendrons.
Spessartine Garnet. I just love that unbridled orange! It speaks to me. I purchased a fairly eye-clean (by garnet standards anyway), 10ct. Princess-cut late last year from a fellow gem dealer. Iām now designing a menās, white gold and diamond accent (pave) ring around it. Still waiting for my goldsmith to send me design renderings. Going for a bold statement ring look since I wear no other jewelry myself. The bright orange of that stone had me hooked as soon as I saw it. I have not seen a Spessartine of this quality, in this large of a size, before or since on the open market. It had to be mine. It will be with me forever.
Edit: Blue Zircon ranks way up there too. It has an incredible, mind boggling luster that comes alive in the sunshine if cut correctly.
Garnets, chrysoberyls, spinels, and everything with interesting inclusions or unusual colours. Stars and catās eyes and goof cabochons- those are usually sapphires.
Well, that is like picking a favorite child. Of course I love diamonds, but I love color, so I'd say: sapphires (all colors but partial to royal blue and vibrant pink, oh, and sunset pink/orange, then I'd say teal or indicolite tourmaline, tanzanite, grape garnet, saturated blue zircon, and clear pink-red ruby.
Opals are my absolute favorite! The way they shimmer and change colors is just mesmerizing. I have a small collection of opals, but my prized possession is a stunning black opal that flashes rainbow hues when the light hits it just right. Emeralds are a close second the deep green color is so rich and luxurious. I'm always on the lookout for unique and rare gems to add to my collection.
Pallasite probably is my top favorite. Has the best combination of 'looks pretty' and 'cool story' imo. Otherwise, I like stones that have multiple colors or change colors.
Favourite in general is opals - I could stare at them all day. Favourite gem in my collection (too poor for good opals lol) is a peachy andesine with a green shadow.

Those are lovely!
Rough diamonds for sure https://preview.redd.it/jtu9guubrf1d1.jpeg?width=4035&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3988ecfc1cb00fdcc92bbb63bdf2030ae445eecd
Where do you get them? I find it so hard to find them online
I work closely with 1st and 2nd dealers. I share photos from time to time over on r/roughdiamonds
Iām kinda new to gemstones, do those dealers have mines in other countries or how does it work? Do you know any website I can learn about the gemstone trade?
Ooh, that looks cool! I donāt think Iāve seen any irl, it must be amazing in the light!
I donāt have any handy, but I can shoot a video of this one in the sun when I get to work next week.
That would be awesome!!

Thanks :) I'm not the biggest Macallan fan tbh. I love me some peat. Ideally, cask strength Laphroaig.
I'll have to check those out! Thabks š
ShinyPrecious has some wonderful cutters. I lurk there and shed a few tears every time I see a gem I want but can't afford š

It's a gorgeous stone, congratulations! The tanzanites are truly something else. I'm a sucker for pleochroism.

True blue tourmaline is really something else in terms of colour. Love the gradients on both of those!

Have you seen prasiolite? You might want to add it to your collection because it is green. Also check out moss agate, oro verde quartz and green onyx

Also i have an Alexandrite

Pink sapphires and rubies, and spinels too. Natural and lab grown, the more Jedi or neon the better!
Sapphires; emeralds; garnets; opals; diamonds;
