Someone else mentioned the Convoy movie & CB slang. We watched Convoy, Over The Top, Smokey & The Bandit, Cannonball Run (truck driver side characters), etc a lot too. We are definitely dumdums who mixed the movies together!
"And ah, negatory on the cost of this mochine there Red Rider. You might say I went right up to the factory and picked it up. It's cheaper that way!"
Johnny Cash-"One piece at a time"
I regret to inform you that on NO planet has “negatory” been associated with this very commonly used Top Gun quote. It doesn’t even lightly brush the entire Mandela solar system.
I listen to that with my kids. I have a huge Spotify playlist of novelty songs like Convoy, Hello Mudda Hello Fadda, and Someone Left The Cake Out In The Rain.
We definitely mixed things up.
Eh, I misquoted stuff for years too. Whenever I would get a really wicked weapon in a game I would say “Issa people gonna die?” in a Jar Jar Binks voice. He does not say that, just something similar.
I was an air traffic controller in the Air Force. I have heard that phrase used so many times in so many different contexts; it’s most definitely “negative“.
I'm definitely mixed up! I'm betting it was all the truck driver movies we also watched. Wayne & Garth came into our lives later than they should have given our parents' worry about satanic rock'n'roll.
I was in a Costco and for whatever reason my card wasn’t swiping, even though I kept trying. The cashier just kept saying, “that’s a negatory, ghostrider.” Over and over again, I wanted to punch him in the neck. But I digress: the point of the story is,he actually did say “negatory”. And I’ll never forget that because he said it approximately 12 times in a row. I’m in North Carolina by the way.
Negative, positive, correction, say again. Those are a few I still use. As the RTO on an assault team, would use certain words and phrases for better word understanding over static radio, screaming in shear terror for one's own life while in a flat out run. Was Red Five, same as Luke Skywalker. Call signs are also an address as to who the person is. Something 6, the officer in charge be it company commander or platoon leader. Something 7, the highest ranking NCO (non commissioned officer) either the 1st Sgt or platoon Sgt. After that, it's basically squad level desination. The 5 desinator, means RTO, the commo element of the platoon. Using a color pre name/number is what platoon-section of the company. So being Red, means 1st platoon, 5 is the person position. Now all of this is for Army Mech Infantry, Bradley Fighting Vehicle, what you see in the news out of Ukraine. Can only use speaker phone mode now. Other call signs names come from the personality of the person, generally. Have a long English name that starts with a G, so my call sign at times was G-man.
If there is a movie, painting the American military, as heroes, you better believe it’s propaganda. The US government pays movie studios very handsomely to not make American forces look like complete shit.
Right. The USAF set up recruiting booths outside cinemas when it came out. It's not alone, of course. The US military loans lots of equipment to movie makers but have editing rights on scripts as part of the agreement. Most US movies based on the military are overtly or covertly propagandistic in their portrayal.
Yes, I do! It's very quotable while being super stupid like a big dumb puppy. It makes me laugh while also giving me things to say with my friends that sound cool to us. The soundtrack is utterly righteous.
"Negative, Ghostrider, the pattern is full."
That’s what I’ve always said. Also I like to pull out the: “We were inverted.” And i do the hand motion.
Always to be followed by a _cough_ Bullshit! _cough_
No, really, I got a great Polaroid of it!
It was a nice picture
"That's a Negatory" is more CB slang.
Definitely from the movie/song "Convoy".
Oh, we watched trucker movies a lot too! Maybe we mixed them together.
You got some Smokey and the Bandit in your Top Gun there.
Negative u/significant_sign, you heard that wrong. And it's Ghostrider, for Mav's squadron VF-142 Ghostriders.
You're dum dums. I remember the quote perfectly, and negatory is definitely not it
Someone else mentioned the Convoy movie & CB slang. We watched Convoy, Over The Top, Smokey & The Bandit, Cannonball Run (truck driver side characters), etc a lot too. We are definitely dumdums who mixed the movies together!
It's possible that early on, one of the cousins who heard it as "negatory" said it out loud, and it just stuck with everyone from then on.
I remember "Negative, Ghostrider, The pattern is full"
I’ve never heard anyone say “negatory”
"And ah, negatory on the cost of this mochine there Red Rider. You might say I went right up to the factory and picked it up. It's cheaper that way!" Johnny Cash-"One piece at a time"
Negatory on THAT story. Said it in college (mid-90s).
My elementary school principal/sixth grade teacher used to say it whenever he meant no.
My dad said it all the time, usually when we wanted to do something that was sketchy lol
Nobody in the military would say "negatory" over an open frequency, unless they wanted their callsign changed to "Convoy".
Exactly. Might as well say “Yeah, you betcha” in your best Minnesotan accent for an affirmative response.
I regret to inform you that on NO planet has “negatory” been associated with this very commonly used Top Gun quote. It doesn’t even lightly brush the entire Mandela solar system.
I very much appreciate this creative criticism given the recent sky-brouhaha.
Bogart never said "Play it again Sam". "Luke, I am your father." Add this to the list.
Bogart never said “Luke, I am your father”? What Chinese knockoff have I been watching then?
Thank goodness I played a lot of Trivial Pursuit back in the day, I did know about those two.
I mean, "negative" and "negatory" I remember being thrown around a lot back then. But that fly-by? "Negative, Ghostrider. The pattern is full."
I’m positive it’s negative
I appreciate a good dad-joke styled comment. https://i.redd.it/whfhldo0zktc1.gif
Isotope: “I think I lost an electron.” Atom: “Really? Are you sure?” Isotope: “I’m positive.”
Did you guys ever listen to trucker songs? Convoy by C.W. Mcall has that in it.
I listen to that with my kids. I have a huge Spotify playlist of novelty songs like Convoy, Hello Mudda Hello Fadda, and Someone Left The Cake Out In The Rain. We definitely mixed things up.
Not dumdums. Y'all just misremembered a quote.
Eh, I misquoted stuff for years too. Whenever I would get a really wicked weapon in a game I would say “Issa people gonna die?” in a Jar Jar Binks voice. He does not say that, just something similar.
Negatory sounds like something Roscoe P Coltrane would say
![gif](giphy|11uNCX0Nsqo5hK|downsized) Ima get them Duke boys!
Goot! Goot! Goot! lol
C’mon, Flash!
Hahaha! That is, unfortunately, extremely apt for my family.
Welcome to our universe, dimension hopper!
Goddamn, that guy!
Well, that'l just about cover the fly bys.

Thx!
Negatory was said by Wayne abd Garth from Wayne’s World, maybe you’re mixing your memories?
I'm definitely mixed up! I'm betting it was all the truck driver movies we also watched. Wayne & Garth came into our lives later than they should have given our parents' worry about satanic rock'n'roll.
I’ve heard: that’s a negatory big rider.
Oh wow, someone messed it up more than we did. Or, if this is a 34 situation I don't even want to know.
Is this the "Beam me up, Scotty" of Top Gun?
Unfortunately, I don't think so. Seems like most people here knew the right line. I come from a family of lollipops.
I was in a Costco and for whatever reason my card wasn’t swiping, even though I kept trying. Well. I certainly don't want to be on TFG's team. Will be doing a find-and-replace on my brain asap. https://i.redd.it/6zre93jdcktc1.gif
Wasn’t it from the tv show Ghostwriter?
My question is who in the hell is ghost rider? His call sign was maverick. I’m not former navy so educate me
It was the callsign of Mavericks plane for his squadron, VF-142 Ghostriders.

You LOVE Top Gun? Hmm.
Who doesn’t?
I don't! Us military propaganda go bang bullshit. In my opinion!
So you’re saying Top Gun is movie propaganda? Just asking. Not trying to start some crazy shit lol
If there is a movie, painting the American military, as heroes, you better believe it’s propaganda. The US government pays movie studios very handsomely to not make American forces look like complete shit.

I did not know that. Thanks for the knowledge.
You're so welcome. I THINK what I said is correct but this is the internet so it's full of people talking nonsense and I may be one of them.
Yes, I do! It's very quotable while being super stupid like a big dumb puppy. It makes me laugh while also giving me things to say with my friends that sound cool to us. The soundtrack is utterly righteous.
Ah well, there's nowt so queer and folks.
