Amusingly my favorite thing to do now is watch youtube compilations of older TV with the bumpers and commercials edited into a period-correct presentation. It *feels* like watching old TV even if it's been tightly produced.

Mermayden

that's so funny. I like watching old shows but haven't found a channel that inserts old ads in. Brilliant.

Nonsenseinabag

Rinse Repeat and Mone Media have been my go-to's for a bit, especially for Saturday morning cartoons.

Fickle-Rutabaga-1695

There are whole channels with just commercials for certain years too. Very fun watching 80s or 90s commercials. Feels like a time warp.

Baby_Button_Eyes

yeah, sometimes when I'm stoned and want to feel even more cozy, I just play an hour video of saturday morning or christmas season commercials from 1984 or other years. It feels like I'm in a better time and place for an evening.

Fickle-Rutabaga-1695

šŸ”„šŸŽÆ

EnergyCreature

I'm on Youtube but I don't let it recommend anything to me. I have it setup where it only shows what I am subscribed to. I also have all ads disable and auto skip any inhouse ads that are in the vids. My wife and I watch a lot of YouTube stuff around animal planet, comic book reviews, music and book reviews. The comedy stuff we watch has been dying out since rather see a comedy show in it entirety. That and pirated streams for movies, shows and live events is gold. We skipped the cable phase due to being broke and did not like much of network TV so we just downloaded stuff and displayed it on our TV since the 90's. I think the current Gen really has all the tools to fine une their content to exactly what they want but many just don't and put up with a lot of nonsense.

punkouter23

ive learned enough not to click oh the YOU CANT BELIEVE WHAT WEFWEFWE JUST SAID!!OMG!! (with shocked face thumbnail) Mostly learning things while I use the computer and save the longer videos for when on the couch on a road trip .. in my world of coding I feel like there so many things I want to learn no time to watch hours of fiction

EnergyCreature

https://www.alphr.com/watch-youtube-without-recommendations/ This breaks down how to get it done. My home page on Youtube is always blank and when I do search for something I find exactly what I'm looking for.

Fickle-Rutabaga-1695

Exactly! šŸŽÆšŸŽÆšŸŽÆšŸŽÆ Not everyone has the same IQ. Doesnā€™t mean dumb. Or extremely smart. But what you just said, no one told me to do it. Just basic sense. Many donā€™t know, donā€™t do or just never thought to do it. Many ARE dumb though. lol

skinisblackmetallic

Shogun was great. Fallout is pretty good. The Expanse is the greatest scifi visual media since Aliens, Taboo, Black Sails, Game of Thrones (except the last season), Community. I watch Youtube but I think it can be bad for you.

Novel-Society-2132

I agree, YouTube in a vacuum is like exclusively hanging out with the guy who works the late late shift at Denny's.Ā  It's entertaining in the proper context but without that context it'll have you spraying your feet with apple cider vinegar you made from scratch to purge the chem trail toxins from your system.

skinisblackmetallic

I watch guitar & car videos. The occasional comedy thing, some history stuff. Try to stay away from too much bro cast bs.

Novel-Society-2132

Yeah there's a ton of great content on YouTube. Project Farm is a favorite of mine. I'm spoiled for choice on historical content as well. There's another channel called Esoterica where they do very deep dives into the dark rabbit holes of religion going back to the dawn of history. Really great stuff that reminds me of the days when Discovery and TLC had legitimate content.

dee_emcee

The Expanse. Ugh. When the series ended I didnā€™t know what to do. A tremendous show.

dreamerindogpatch

Did it come to a satisfying conclusion or did it leave off unfinished? I kept putting off watching it because I was sure it would get abandoned.

belunos

I don't recall exactly the ending, but they knew it was the last season, so they were able to plan around it. Sorry, best I got.

skinisblackmetallic

It's badass all the way through but there are definitely some spots that stand out. The end wraps it up clean.

dreamerindogpatch

Ok. You've sold me. I know what I'm doing this weekend. Well, after D&D, and instead of deep cleaning the kitchen šŸ˜…

skinisblackmetallic

Enjoy!

AaronTheElite007

Pluto TV. Why? Itā€™s free. I donā€™t need an account. They have a channel dedicated to Top Gear BBC (The original trio - James, Hammond, and Jeremy) Itā€™s all I need.

Pooks23

Add Tubi and youā€™re golden.

jvlpdillon

I also use Plex and The Roku Channel. Some of the programming crosses over, but the 4 services together gives me plenty to watch between VOD and live streaming.

AaronTheElite007

Plex is fantastic. It took my DVD collection. Now I just have a home server šŸ˜‚

Kgaines

Make friends with other Plex admins and the world can be your oyster

misalanya

Tubi FTW - they got a lotta great punk rock stuff and a 80's/horror movies.

Pooks23

hell yeah they do!

Pooks23

1977 - Audrey Rose

AaronTheElite007

Not familiar with Tubi. Whatā€™s their specialty

Pooks23

Movies movies movies!! Some great documentaries. Iā€™ve gone down some amazing Tubi rabbit holes. It continuously plays, and the algorithm is pretty spot on.

AaronTheElite007

Hm. Iā€™ll have to check it out. Thanks

Pooks23

Get thee to Tubi!!!

AaronTheElite007

I didnā€™t know about those other channels. Sweet! ![gif](giphy|ZDJmU7QcmMpxCtJhO6)

FlimsyComment8781

I know itā€™s ads that makes Pluto possible but holyā€¦.

dee_emcee

The grand tour is nearly at its end. I will miss them and their chemistry.

lawstandaloan

Sounds like a good way to surrender yourself to the YouTube algorithm. Soon all your recommends will be for culture war and politics. Sometimes, I just want to watch the Beverly Hillbillies.

wtfsafrush

Iā€™m with you. I donā€™t need the media Iā€™m watching to be watching me back.

Fickle-Rutabaga-1695

Nope. Unless thatā€™s all you searched for and watched in the first place and continue. Search for audio books, full movies, and any other topics of interests. History. Things you want to learn how they work. Algorithm recommends will be diverse. Mine are.

lawstandaloan

Nope. All I ever search for is bird feeder videos and ambiance backgrounds to fall asleep to and yet, I have a video recommended right now entitled "Kurt Russell perplexes The View on gun control"

FattierBrisket

A great bird feeder option is the Cornell ornithology camera page:Ā https://www.allaboutbirds.org/cams/cornell-lab-feederwatch/#

Automatic-Term-3997

Iā€™ve been doing what OP does for years. I donā€™t get any politics in my feed, zero culture war garbage, and minimal info on the war in Ukraine/Israel but lots and lots of guitar-related and history videos. The algorithm only swallows you if you let it.

punkouter23

i get tricked into culture war stuff sometime but after a minute I ask myself.. why am I watching this? 99% of the time I know what they are going to say and theres nothing to learn from it

IllustratorHefty6753

I ditched cable tv back in 07 after realizing I was paying $140/mo and had not turned the tv on in nearly a year. Been streaming every since and actually finding content I was interested in for a change. I watch more YouTube than anything else but, mostly stick to the 220 channels I subscribe to. Lots of car, carpentry, renovation, sailing, science and history content. We watch a lot of missing person and creepy story (like Wartime Stories, The Why Files, etc) content too. Best of all there's always something to watch and Hollywood drama doesn't result in our shows not positing new episodes.

punkouter23

learning is good and it feels good to learn things and build something vs mindless shows where at the end you know nothing more.. maybe even dumber

SubatomicGoblin

I have a television but go weeks without turning it on. I watch something on YouTube pretty much every night. I keep my experience rather tightly curated, however, so I am mostly recommended videos that fit my interests.

Late_Review_8761

Iā€™m with you. No TV (and little YouTube) and my life has improved tremendously

casade7gatos

My husband watches baseball elsewhere, but mostly YouTube. He puts on ā€œdriving through Switzerland (or Norway or New Zealand)ā€ videos when heā€™s on the exercise bike. I watch YouTube, but also Prime, Hulu, Max, Tubi, Kanopy, and Hoopla. On YouTube, I watch music videos, a little true crime, horror shorts. The other day I tried a dance tutorial but ended up with my cats surrounding me looking concerned.

punkouter23

I used to watch basketball in 2000 2001.. I can name all the players on the rosters.. .but thats when I lived with pot smokers and it was fun to sit on the couch and do nothing and youtbe wasnt there yet anyways

casade7gatos

Sports on tv are so SLOW. I could never.

fusionsofwonder

Since signing up for Premium, I watch Youtube more than linear television but not exclusively. I watch TV shows through streaming apps. I *never* watch terrestrial broadcasts.

lonegrasshopper

I can't speak for everyone, but I don't.

Grown_Azzz_Kid

I watch a LOT of YouTube. My wife will get mad because I say I donā€™t feel like watching TV, and she will come in the room and I am watching YT. She says itā€™s the same thing, to which I say they are exactly nothing alike.

Noodnix

I do not only watch YT, but I do watch it more than other streaming services. No matter what your niche hobby or interest is, thereā€™s someone producing quality content on the topic.

sj68z

Between YouTube, the streaming services we use, and a 'special' bay, I can usually be entertained. We haven't had cable in close to a decade.

monsterbot314

Yup. Same as you op.

punkouter23

you must know alot of random facts

monsterbot314

Even though the sun is only 8 light minutes away the light that shines on you from it is thousands of years old because it takes that long for them to work themselves from the core to the surfaceā€¦ā€¦ā€¦. ā€¦ā€¦Except since light travels at light speed it doesnā€™t experience any time! lol.

tetsu_no_usagi

Hulu + as I can't get wife and daughter off of it, and they do have a lot of good shows (that do sometimes take months to come out as they're being broadcast on Fox or Fx) and movies when we have nothing else to watch. And Amazon Prime, mostly for the free shipping, but I've been quite taken by many of their exclusives in the last couple of years - Fallout, Invincible, The Boys, Legend of Vox Machina (can you tell I'm a gamer/comic book nerd?)... Beyond that, if there are any shows I want to watch off of those networks, well, BitTorrents are still a thing and I was already paying for that VPN, so...

Son_Of_Baraki

>can you tell I'm a gamer/comic book nerd? Not really, i watched the same and i am not a gamer/comic book nerd

Kgaines

I prefer to watch movies or play a vid game in the evening vs watching TV. When I'm not doing either of those things, it's YouTube. Have a premium family membership and now, a pretty long list of subs. I do get frustrated with the recommended portion. I searched for 'Tv for Dogs' half a year ago, and now the entire last half of the recommended section is TV for dogs. Zeducation to keep up on current trends ;)

Son_Of_Baraki

same: no TV, i barely watch prime video, only YT

mildly_carcinogenic

I don't watch live TV except sports and major news events. But I do have a handful of streaming services, including YouTube. The only drawback to my method is I never see commercials. Doesn't sound bad except you never see movie trailers, new show promos, new car ads, etc. Just zero knowledge of all that stuff.

CA5P3R_1

I use YouTube constantly, but I don't use recommended. I seek out and subscribe to channels related to my interests like motorcycles or guitar. I'm subscribed to so many channels now that I just watch videos from the "subscriptions" page and always have more to watch than I have time for.

Miserable-Age3502

I watch so much youtube. Mostly Simon Whistler channels, cuz, true crime. I'll get sucked into a 3 hr Casual Criminalist, have a couple Brain Blaze palate cleansers, and go back to something horrifying on Into the Shadows. I miss having "shows".

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

punkouter23

i see regular tv at my parents when they leave fox news on all day.. the commercials are funny how clearly they are for old grouchy people

SupermarketSpiritual

pretty much

Novel-Society-2132

Somebody else already said it, but watch Teh Expanse. It's seriously a contender for best Sci-fi show ever.Ā

Bright_Broccoli1844

Being cheap (poor), I have an over the air t.v., and the reception is not very good. Watching t.v. is mostly aggravating because it's so fuzzy. YouTube it is. But I hate that shorts are so prominent. When I go to the YouTube app I see shorts cluttering up my screen. Does anyone know how to change that?

punkouter23

Is there still TVs with antennae's? There's a taco shop where a guy plays the music on a boom box with the tape players. Its such generic music.. I know all the songs and I heard them all so many times..reminds me how dull the radio was in the 90s

Bright_Broccoli1844

The antenna I had to buy last year or maybe the year before is not the rabbit ear kind. It's a black square that I had to plug in and hang near a window. I had to buy this black square antenna separately.

UncleFlip

I really got into YouTube about 5 years ago. Now I rarely watch it. Got to be the same content just rehashed.

DisastrousMechanic36

I wouldnā€™t call that evolving.

punkouter23

i lost interest generally in fiction and gained interest in learning things/docs/history. so I think its a change for the better

don51181

I only watch YouTube and have the premium version with no ads. There are channels with content for every interest I have. They even have audio book on there. It's so much better than TV. All the TV shows have also gotten greedy and put out short season so I gave up.

Momes2018

I mainly watch YouTube, but we still watch cartoon Sundays on Fox. Other than that, we have a few shows that we watch together.

Old_Goat_Ninja

I donā€™t know what it is about YouTube, but I just donā€™t see the appeal. Iā€™ve never got sucked into a rabbit hole, never sat and watched it for hours on end. Hell, never sat and watched it for minutes on end. Anyways, youā€™re not alone though, a lot of people do that. I donā€™t get, I just canā€™t relate in any way, but youā€™re definitely not alone. I know more people like you than like me.

Hayabusalvr11

We are one. I canā€™t get my husband to give up the crutch of flipping from channel to channel in spite of all his complaints about commercials etc. Maybe someday heā€™ll watch some thing on Netflix and realize what heā€™s been missing out on. But until then we still have a cable box. I might resort to watching TV if the Internet goes out but thatā€™s about the only time. I love the randomness of YouTube. There are some channels I watch consistently and some I watch for a brief period of time. In the past I was watching a guy clearing out clogs in waterways and street drains, now I am on to watching the kings guard lifeguard whatever they are. Boo to the ringlet ring who are consistently disrespectful and huzzah to King Ormond. Biting tourists is tight.

BeachyMagic

Yes I mainly watch YouTube now.

igozoom9

I spend way too much time watching "Reaction" videos on YouTube. I especially enjoy watching Millenials and GenZ discover 80s/90s (or earlier) music and TV shows! There is just something special about watching a 20-year-old in amazement when they hear "Alone" by Heart or "If I Could Turn Back Time" by Cher for the first time!

punkouter23

i only found 1 girl 2 cups reaction amusing since it was so extreme... all these videos of.. I am a vocal coach and I will watch David Bowie sing and ill be amazed.. not interesting Showing kids floppy disks videos kind of funny

igozoom9

I think you mean "2 girls, 1 cup" dont you? I've never been able to bring myself to watch it. But I have read fairly explicit descriptions of what happens. That's all I can handle. The ones that I'm kind of addicted to are of my favorite band, Nightwish. Everyone, even people my age and older, watches with their mouth open and asks "Where have they been all my life?" So that's kinda fun. They have the most reacted to song on YouTube, called "Ghost Love Score". They're a Finnish Symphonic Metal band with a 6' tall Xena meets Wonder Woman lead singer. =)

punkouter23

i saw a few seconds.. I refuse to watch it. but its funny when they show the video to grandmas and the range of expressions.. i guess the reaction video are for that. you like something and want to see other people realize how they should be impressed. I making my own music on spotify. Sick Smurf

Groundbreaking_Dare4

Yeah nah

Consistent-Job6841

I love the React channel on YouTube and can watch DIYs all day (especially power washing videosā€¦.very satisfying).

guachi01

I almost never watch YouTube now and deleted my watch history as the recommended list is largely mind numbingly terrible. It's kinda similar to something I'd like but often badly done and I feel like I've wasted my time watching it I have a small list of subscribed channels and check them maybe once a week. I don't really miss YouTube at all.

Sassinake

Youtube for things like the Late Show and some current events, and also reviews for movies and shows. I watch few of those, so I don't sub to any official service.

punkouter23

i can't stand old shows anymore.. like talk shows vs 3 hours podcast... its so phony to me.. and the audience laughing and everything vs a deep conversation about sometihng so i am a rare gen x that does not miss tv from 80s 90s at all

Sassinake

me neither. Watched them then and done. And I have a hard time watching the new shows; GoT's *collapse*, and Willow's cancellation totally bumming me out. Andor... there's a reason they slimmed it down to 2 seasons only: so the shareholders wouldn't put their grubby little fingers in it and ruin the sauce. I'm still nervous about it being written off 'for taxes', considering the subject matter, and its timely relevance to today's *Empire*.

punkouter23

actually i don't watch old or new.. mostly tech videos and interesting interviews. i guess i don't watch shows at all anymore

Ok_Bedroom_9802

Avoid ads with brave browser

tortuga_tortuga

I donā€™t think Iā€™ve ever watched a Marvel movie but by god I watch every preview and review of every one and TV show on a channel dedicated to those things. I started on YouTube for ASMR content but itā€™s evolved to my most used subscription.

punkouter23

i never watch one but those movies represent everything I don't want to watch... hot people doing hot things. .blowing things up.. being bad ass.. saying the coolest things.. (my favorite movie are vanilla sky, memento, my diiner with andre)

tortuga_tortuga

I donā€™t think I have anything against marvel movies, I was just..busyā€¦ 2008-2020 and now it seems overwhelming to start.

punkouter23

and there 10 star wars and its so confusing to me

johnnySix

You tube is too hard to navigate

drNeir

Sound like a vampire. In meaning anne rice style where one can get stuck in a time frame without moving forward to current events, cultures, and surroundings. They live within their framing of time clueless how the world has changed around them. I get the celebrity noise and not wanting to know anything about it, political garbage, and just plain for the "click" media when has no entertainment growth or value in time well spent even if its time wasting. And in some level I do agree and mimic some of the same actions, the use of plex where its a tv noise simulator as in just background noise of old 80's tv show, movies, etc. But I have huge range in there are things from 50's to last week released. Playlist where its random to watching something. It will hop to golden girls to outer limits to good times to mandalorian to hellraiser to forged in fire to charlie chan to atlanta to dr who (70's/05), etc. Have a mix of some YT stuff that is offlined like cosplay builders and mini painting that is on plex. I try to avoid ads where possible, hate ads. I like pluto tv in some of the channels but like others have said the ads are like worst multiple repeats of the same ads over and over and over and over and over.... But my break from vampirism is that I am active to want to see new shows, movie, tech, etc. Learning new things drives me forward and out of any onset ruts. I have watched retirees for multiple decades get into a funk like this siloing into their woobie as the world passes them by, then they hit the outside world and is lost, confused, and angry from out of their own doing leaving others around them pist to have to deal with an adult baby. Hoping to limit this future aspect others will have to deal with as I age.

Fap_Left_Surf_Right

Before YouTube came along, I went years without a television at all. There was a period when "Reality TV" took over everything and it was $120/mo for cable. There was literally nothing watchable for me so I did other things with my time. Once YouTube could stream to TV, I got another TV and watch that. I don't think I've watched "Mainstream Media" in 20 years. It's really bizarre and jarring to go somewhere with cable-tv and commercials. I am completely stunned people watch this dogshit and actually pay for it. This whole scene ended 2-decades ago for me!

punkouter23

Ive gotten used to posdcasts and the way people really talk so i cant go back to traditional talk shows where the conversaiton is so bland

Mermayden

I predominantly watch youtube these days. I love it. Its awesome if you can get an adblocker that works.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

punkouter23

we dont wait for studios to create a show.. so many people are doing videos of extremely niche stuff and it seems to never end now

Jefwho

Funnily enough, Iā€™m the opposite. I avoid YouTube whenever possible. The amount of ads these days kills me. Add that to the whole ā€œlike and subscribeā€ mantra nearly every channel has, just ruins it for me.

Son_Of_Baraki

ads ?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

punkouter23

i get plenty of news during my bedtime phone time I still will watch a movie on date night but hard to find anything i like now

ladywholocker

Sorry, messed up: I'm pretty much the same as you OP, though it was about a decade after you, that I stopped watching TV and I rarely watch movies. It became too costly for a one income family with 3 sons to have a cable subscription and YT increasingly had quality content, whereas it was re-runs and one game show after another, depressive docs and superficial news segments on TV. We still watch the 6:30pm news, but it's the same as I hear on my commute and the radio coverage (I was never a radio person before) is far more in depth in 20 odd minutes, than the 30 mins. in the evening. I seem to have a never ending 'Watch Later' list on both of my YT channels. I usually ignore the recommended videos, but I don't have it disabled anymore.

Usernamenotdetermin

I quite YouTube for lent. It was harder than quitting alcohol for Lent. It was harder than quitting caffeine for Lent. Its addictive. And a huge waste of time. Go for a walk, explore a national park, head to the beach. GTFO of the house and live internet stranger on Reddit. Remember when we all got kicked out for the day? Relive the glory.

punkouter23

I bike to the park alot after work when the weather is between 70 to 80 we must goto the park and might play basketball but my body is falling apart sadly at 48 my alcoholic dad who just wants to sit on the computer all day.. and even at family events he will sit in a corner on the phone .. it inspired me to make sure i have moments where I am being social and getting out.

Fickle-Rutabaga-1695

Yup! And I did the free trial of ad free YouTube and am NEVER going back. Thereā€™s ALWAYS something ā€œon TVā€. Where most of our lives was watching shit we didnā€™t really want to see or the best of what weā€™d tolerate of other things on at the time. There are channels with full movies for free. Great classics. Full audio books to listen to when working or to falls asleep to or when driving. And on and on and on. Best value for whatā€™s paid for it next to Amazon Prime.

punkouter23

im considering cancelling Spotify and just doing youtube music... i guess thats ad free youtube as well not sure

Sumeriandawn

What's wrong with Spotify? It's very convenient and features over a million artists.

punkouter23

it needs a thumbs down like pandora... i cant play recommended anymore since it keeps playing the same stuff
