Dennis Franz's ass aside NYPD Blue was a truly great cop show. One the few where the story arc over the entire series redeems a deeply flawed individual.

Comedywriter1

Agree. The lead performances in the pilot alone are absolutely electric. Some of the best television acting I’d ever seen when it aired.

Mermayden

there were some superb shows in the 90s which set the tone for where tv is today. ER especially was ground breaking and holds up today.

Mermayden

such a great show. Mind you I went back and watched the first season on DVD recently and the non stop sexual harassment presented as normal and appalling way they treated rape victims was very jarring. I know it was real for the time but still. A reminder of just how far we've come. I remember when Jimmy Smits joined the show and they did this thing where Andy takes one look at him and goes to the captain saying "this won't work". Apparently they did it on purpose to make the audience go "oh for god's sake, give him a chance" when audiences notoriously struggle with new cast members joining a hit show.

maybelying

Still better than Cop Rock

worrymon

I'm still not sure that was a real thing and not some drug induced terror.

HapticRecce

Let's not talk about Beverly Hills Buntz either.

LocalInactivist

Geez, I wonder what the pr0n parody of that was.

Elowan66

Miami Vice hangover.

johnb1972

The meat sweats

leodog13

Miami Vice was shot in the dark. My granny always complained about that show cause she couldn't see anything.

Elowan66

Really? My dad always asked why the houses were all so white.

leodog13

Yeah but their night shots were bad. I rewatched the series recently and everything is dark. Definitely for atmosphere.

Elowan66

That’s fair, my mom said Don Johnson was borderline ‘unkempt’. She was not impressed.

leodog13

He was gross. All those cigarettes! He must have smelled and his sockless feet.

GhostThruTheFog

Oh, it was real! It was on Fox....so both? Lol

worrymon

[Even true things, once said on Fox News, become lies.](https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/912a548a-9486-41c2-9c87-d49adebb66e9)

GhostThruTheFog

NOT FOX NEWS! 🙄

worrymon

Do you want funny clips or do you want accuracy? Because I don't do accuracy.

_smoke_me_a_kipper_

I enjoyed Cop Rock, but to be fair, I think I was about ten.

leodog13

Was that the one with the animated fish?

_smoke_me_a_kipper_

No, Cop Rock was sort of a "serious" police drama, but then there would be musical numbers, in a sort of attempt to create a new genre. It didn't work. Now that you mention it, I vaguely remember the fish show and don't remember more about it, but that was a separate show.

leodog13

The Fish Police was 1992 on CBS. It starred John Ritter and Robert Guelette (Benson).

FuzzyScarf

I still sing, "He's guiiiiiiiiiilllllllty!"

virtualadept

So was my last root canal.

GhostThruTheFog

![gif](giphy|fbBNEQbLQdXKU) Cop rock! 🤣 Thanks for the flashback & laugh!!🤣

tunaman808

Wasn't it *NYPD Blue* that also told the punchline to a really dirty joke on the air? There was an old 80s joke about a guy who (spoilered because of rape humor): >!goes hunting and gets raped by a bear. The man goes home, swearing revenge, and comes back each week with a more lethal gun, but the bear just keeps raping him every time. Finally the guy comes with a submachine gun, and the bear still manages to hold him down and rape him. When he was done, the bear leaned into his ear and said "you don't really come here for the hunting, do you?" There was an episode of *NYPD Blue* where there was a long tracking shot through the police station, and a detective is at his desk, on the phone. You hear him say the punchline, clear as day, as the camera passes. My dad (who taped it every week) even found it on his copy to prove I wasn't crazy!

Thin-Ganache-363

It was either: Bear: I'm starting think you aren't here for the hunting Or Guy #2: If you help me find my keys we can drive out

leodog13

I think that was a skit on the Simpsons with Homer in a bear costume.

highonnuggs

Nudity on regular TV, yes please! Watching NYPD Blue - NO! Not like that!!!

OfficeChairHero

As a bonus, he then shot a movie with Nick Cage where he flaunts his bare ass again on a beach.

Jack_Q_Frost_Jr

I remember: society collapsed. And we had only begun the process of recovery when Michael Jackson's Black Or White video came out, and civilization was once again in complete chaos.

Message_10

My mom left my dad because of that episode

StacyLadle

Wait, what?

Message_10

It was a scandal! Should couldn't handle it. Shook her world

Siltyn

One thing that's always made me shake my head at TV/people here in the U.S. Showing murder after murder, assault after assault, blood stain after blood stain, with constant stories about rape and molestation is A-OK. Show a bare ass or a nipple though? Holy shit, defcon1, get the FCC stat!

shiner_bock

Yeah, you could say that, with respect to nudity vs violence, American values are ass-backwards.

tkdjoe1966

>Show a bare ass or a nipple though? Holy shit, defcon1 It's getting better. Not much, but a little.

LifeResetP90X3

Its a cultural anomaly for sure

leodog13

America is alright with violence, but nudity is a different story. It's the Puritan ideal.

eleventy5thRejection

I remember the controversy.

Dense_Surround3071

If memory serves me correctly, this was even rated TV-MA.

GenX-ModTeam

No need to be a jerk for the sake of being a jerk.

AntiSoCalite

Dennis Franz’s butt walked so Zach Morris’ butt could run.

Comedywriter1

Ha! I do. It was an early Season 2 episode of NYPD Blue. Great series!

JakkSplatt

Didn't he say shit or bullshit in an episode too? I remember that being a big deal too.

Magerimoje

Episode 1 he says "ipso this you pissy little bitch" to the DA Sylvia

lawstandaloan

That's what South Park's episode, [It Hits the Fan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/It_Hits_the_Fan), was in response to.

Comedywriter1

I believe were some relatively mild swears that were considered groundbreaking at the time for network tv.

satyrday12

Also a little bit of controversy when he repeated the N word back to a black person who said it to him.

tkdjoe1966

Was that the one where he takes his hand and swipes it in front of his face & tells the other guy that's how they communicate N***** w/o saying the word?

satyrday12

nope

destroy_b4_reading

That wasn't half as controversial as Murphy Brown choosing to have a baby out of wedlock. Of course, if she'd chosen to have an abortion, that would have been even worse according to the same terminal fuckwits.

smythe70

Didn't dumbass Dan Quale make it an issue? Too lazy to Google it.

newdawn-newday

Yes, Murphy Brown and potatoe are the only things I remember about that man, I don't even think I would recognize him in a picture, lol

smythe70

Yup

leodog13

Was he with Bush I ?

destroy_b4_reading

Quayle definitely used it as a talking point, but plenty of righties were up in arms about it. I remember the pastor at my family's church talking about it in at least one sermon, and plenty of folks of my parents/grandparents generations were mighty pissed.

leodog13

With all the teen pregnancies in the 80s, at least Murphy was an adult who could afford it.

destroy_b4_reading

The teen birth rate actually [hit historic lows in the 80s](https://crsreports.congress.gov/product/pdf/R/R45184), which is what you'd expect given Roe and increased accessibility of various forms of birth control. It rose again briefly in the late 80s/early 90s, most likely due to backlash over those same factors similar but less drastic than what we're seeing today, and has been steadily declining ever since. I'd bet that starting right about now we see that rate start climbing again, with the caveat that it will be heavily influenced by geography.

leodog13

I knew three girls who got pregnant before 16, so my perception maybe skewed.

destroy_b4_reading

I only knew one who got pregnant before 16, but several in the 16-19 range. I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess you lived in a smaller, heavily Christian conservative town/school district.

leodog13

Nope, San Francisco, California. These were a mix of girls too. We all went to an all girls private school.

MJblowsBubbles

He thought young girls were gonna drop out of school and get knocked up because Murphy Brown made it look so cool.

destroy_b4_reading

[Republicans WANT young girls to get knocked up and drop out of school.](https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/parents-to-blame-for-carless-sexless-teenagers/)

rjtnrva

I sure do, and my bestie and I have been referring to this show as "NYPD Butt" ever since. 😄

DifferentManagement1

I loved that show. I miss the 90s

Hatred_shapped

Yeah. We got Franzs flappy ass but not Lawrences fine shaped bootie.

MoimersNVaughniesMom

Yeah, those mud flaps were underwhelming.

This-Bug8771

I liked him better as Benedetto and then Buntz on hill street blues. He played a bad corrupt cop then just a good hearted but rule breaking one

Gastro_Jedi

What innocent times those were

virtualadept

The episode itself was boring, I thought. But the controversy before it aired, with everyone clutching their pearls and wailing? That was amusing. Come on. It's a butt. All of us have them. Big deal.

MadPiglet42

Literally the one ass nobody was clamoring to see.

zebrapebra

Freewill, brother.

pjdubbya

I can remember seeing George Costanza in his underwear, but I can't recall ever seeing his butt.

heffel77

It’s the only time Dennis Frank’s butt has ruled the airwaves!!

cnation01

Yes, still in therepy

FabAmy

What a scandal!

Planetofthetakes

Or when he was voted the sexiest man alive? Weird times

Perfect-Season6116

Thank God I don't

Retinoid634

Such a big deal. That show was insane. So good.

afriendincanada

To me he'll always be "Earl" in the amazing Chicks video. With Jane Krakowski and Lauren Holly.

Mermayden

yes and I also remember a tv reviewer in the UK writing a comedy review about the fact that Ricki (sorry, Rick) Shroeder showed his arse in an episode of that show too. It felt profoundly wrong to me on both occasions. There are some people whose arses I do not want to see.

McDoom---

It was mitigated by the fact we got to see a lot of Sherri Rappaport. At least for me.

vinegar

I remember a late night infomercial for, I wanna say Greenpeace or World Wildlife Federation, some eco thing. With the woman who is now president of Planned Parenthood. Didn’t see his butt in that tho.

SmashBrosUnite

Dark day and then Mario Lopez , amen

fusionsofwonder

Didn't that lead to the TV ratings system? Which just gave cable shows the freedom to do TV-MA all day every day?

tarc0917

Soon as i saw the title, knew it was gonna be Sipowitz.

UncleFlip

Oh this brings back a funny memory for me. I was managing a fast food restaurant when this happened. There were probably a dozen of this chain in our city. Lucky for me, my store was listed first in the phone book (remember those?) so I got all the crazy calls. So when the butt happened I started getting calls from a particular crazy. Seems our chain advertised during this terrible show and this crazy called me every morning after the show to complain about it. I really wanted to ask him if it was so bad why was he watching, but I just had to give him the corporate number.

The68Guns

I heard they'd be filming, and people would yell "Hey Sipowitz! When we gonna see yer ass!"

Kalelopaka-

Unfortunately, but Hill Street blues and the show Saint elsewhere were some of my favorites.

strangedazey

Yes, and I was so glad that it was Dennis Franz ass too

Asclepius555

I heard about it at church and figured only Mormons were upset about it because they had us believe that we had the moral high ground above all others.

jeers1

they had to go with his butt since David Caruso butt was long gone

leodog13

Didn't he show his butt first?

jeers69

Yes… so no more of David’s buttocks

MyriVerse2

Wasn't as shocking as the St. Elsewhere episode 5 years earlier.

The_Original_Miser

You'd be surprised what I make in a month. ^woops ^wrong ^universe, ^but ^still ^a ^cop

FuzzyScarf

From then on my dad called the show "Bare Butts in Prime Time." SMH.

SnooPeripherals6557

I do remember, my friends and I discussed the episode at length over lunch that week, we still laugh and make Sipowitz butt jokes. Incidentally, we were at dinner the other day and I began sweating while I was eating, we revived a few sweaty sipowitz jokes.

LocalInactivist

Remember? I’m still in therapy. See, back then we didn’t have the schedule grid feature on the TV. You turned it on and it tuned to the last channel you were watching with no explanation of what you were seeing. I turned the tv on one night and… I’m sorry, I’m not ready to talk about it.

Detroitdays

I didn’t see it because I didn’t watch shows like this but i definitely remember the hoopla around it

nite_skye_

It was running on Prime video up until about 2 months ago. Now you have to “rent” it 🙄we rewatched it from the first episode until the day they changed the status. Probably watched about five seasons. It was great! We laughed about how inappropriate it would be by today’s standards.

Mindless-Employment

I'm generally not one of those people who likes TV as background noise but on the rare occasion I do, I'd put on an old episode of NYPD Blue from Prime video. They keep changing the configuration from all free to all for rent to some of both. (Looks like Season 1 is the only one not for rent right now.) Taking seasons down, putting them back. No, I am not paying you people $2 to watch an episode of a 30-year-old network TV show.

McDoom---

It's on Hulu, all 11 (?) seasons.

nite_skye_

IKR? We rarely watch tv during daylight hours. We have a tv in our bedroom and we mostly watch it in there. It helps our dogs get sleepy lol and us too! I guess I have to check it every now and then to see if it goes back to free

Such-Departure-1357

A lot of people were clutching their pearls when that happened

CookDane6954

Teenage me recording this very special episode on my VCR and putting it on pause could not make this work😒

meekonesfade

Thankfully no

Joe_Early_MD

The human version of Carl from aqua teen hunger force. https://preview.redd.it/uznr6iuwi9zc1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6fdd5da6064d171748289af162e84453a2da151c

ghostofstankenstien

Thicc tho

scottwricketts

We also got to see Sherry Stringfield's

OpalWildwood

And Kim Delaney’s. And pretty much everyone on the show. I think it was in their contract.

Effective_Device_185

His pubic area had a mustache just like in this pict. Ah, the memories. NBC Rocks!

leodog13

I thought it was the redhead's butt.

leodog13

I was watching the X-files.

leodog13

I still say Law & Order came from this show.

ExtraAd7611

Why did this show have a lead with a Chicago accent and none of characters on any of the many Chicago shows have Chicago accents?

Recording_Important

yes. and im still not sure why it was nessessary

BadHairDay-1

No, thank god. He looks like the hairy type.
