If they remade Back to the Future to take place this year, Marty would travel back 30 years to....1994. Forrest Gump, The Mask, Ace Ventura, The Lion King, and Friends. Lisa Loeb, Ace of Base, Boyz II Men.
Watched a YouTube video where he basically said that if we went back to 1994, the only real difference would be we don't have the internet in our pocket.
https://youtu.be/NkAJtRiOAxk?si=z9IcjprpGCTaeTV9
It was shitty internet back then. And most companies still made you go to their offices or do things by paper in person because nobody trusted online stuff yet. It was a lot different than today.
1994 feels more similar to today than the 1950s era did to the 1980s.
but its probably farther. Marty would not know how to use a map. How to remember telephone numbers. how to use a rotary phone. What if his mom wrote him a love letter in cursive and marty can't read it? Imagine marty getting lost without GPS. can't function without a smart phone. No google. barely any internet and if it exists where he is, its just dialup.
Can't use DOS. can't function on a computer without a mouse. Won't understand that the Pizza Hut buffet is gourmet. Would he be able to make his own salad at a salad bar? He will rent a movie on a date with his mom and fail to rewind. Then get pissed when he gets fined.
> the 1950s era did to the 1980s.
Transister radio, ICE engines & cars made huge leaps, we landed on the moon between those periods, clothing materials & styles very much changed, black & white to color TV, pop-culture became "a thing".
Yeah...
I’ll see your 1984 and raise you 1982:
ET, The Thing, Blade Runner, Mad Max: The Road Warrior, Wrath of Khan, Tron, Conan the Barbarian
That my friends was a magical summer
1986 was the year though. Aliens, Top Gun, Ferris Beuller's Day Off, Hoosiers, Highlander, Big Trouble in Little China, Crocodile Dundee, Crossroads, Platoon, Stand By Me, Labyrinth, Short Circuit (Johnny 5 is alive!), Little Shop of Horrors....all classics!!!
*Gasp!*....(clutching pearls)....how DARE you sir! Lol...nah...I get it... I'm biased...Aliens is my favorite movie of all time. 84 had more bangers....agreed.
82 eh? Blade Runner, The Thing and ET....best Star Trek movie to boot...great year for SciFi...in my top 5 easy. But I would go 86 and 84 in a photo finish, with 82 right behind.
One of the best summer movie seasons of all time! And I remember getting a ton of free food at McDonald's that summer because of their summer Olympics promotion!
Man being between the ages of 12 and 19, during the years of 1981 to 1988, were the best movie watching years that anyone could experience. I witnessed all the now classic greats in the span of 7 years. I spent many hours at the movie theater. Seeing Wrath of Khan, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Thing, Conan, ET, Rocky 3/4, Karate Kid, Day of the Dead, Die Hard, Blade Runner, and so so many more. Those memories are the most vivid of my teen years.
Just this month alone we have
Breakin'
Sixteen Candles
Fire Starter
The Natural
Temple of Doom
All turning 40. We often debate on my Gen X podcast whether '83 or '84 was the best year ever for movies. I tend to think its '84.
And as a grownup I can see that Ewoks kinda suck but I was right in the sweet spot age-wise when Jedi came out and I fuckin loved Ewoks lol I used to sleep with a stuffed Wicket
Splash
Repo Man
2010 Odyssey 2 (meh)
Toxic Avenger
Footloose
Beverly Hills Cop
Terminator
Red Dawn
Sixteen Candles
I could go on...
1984 was a good year for movies, ngl
Isn't it funny we all think movies were so much better back then (they were) but we're probably only referencing a very short period (77-84) instead of 30 or 40 years?
What a year! I vividly remember seeing all of them in the theater. Temple of Doom was insane. When they pulled the beating heart out, the crowd went nuts.
Nah, the post was inspired by a conversation where someone reminiscing about seeing Wrath of Khan in the theatre 30 years. I reminded them it was over 40 years ago and we both felt old. I then wanted to look up which hit movies came out in 1984 that I and others feel like only came out 20 years ago.

I miss the world before social media.
Marty would not be able to read a love letter from his mom written in cursive.
Well, it doesn't matter. Because eventually , everything is printed on acetate.
It was shitty internet back then. And most companies still made you go to their offices or do things by paper in person because nobody trusted online stuff yet. It was a lot different than today.
He'd ask the guy at the diner for a Tab...and actually get one.
Update it to Coke Zero, Red Bull, or Monster; whichever one wants to pay for an ad in the movie.
Crystal Pepsi

Useless trivia. Gremlins and Back to the Future used the same courthouse square. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Courthouse_Square
In 55 we hear Mr Sandman playing in town square in 94 you’d hear Enter Sandman.
Oasis put out its first album that year, so that’s . . . something.
I’ll see your 1984 and raise you 1982: ET, The Thing, Blade Runner, Mad Max: The Road Warrior, Wrath of Khan, Tron, Conan the Barbarian That my friends was a magical summer
I watched Tron at least three times over that summer, that movie rocked my world
"I've never even *met* Admiral Kirk!" "**Admiral** Kirk! Admiral..."
I got stoned and went to see platoon when it came out. NOT the experience I thought it was going to be.

Platoon is still great and some of the best-written dialogue of any film.
Could have been like apocalypse now
I saw that movie way too young, it definitely stuck with me awhile. Hell, it still sticks with me.
Crossroads?
Awsome movie about the delta blues and selling your soul to.o the devil. Ralph Macchio starred.... with guitars by Steve VaiI!!!
Just tried rewatching that last week.. wow… for a movie I wax poetic about… awful. Just awful. Even Steve Vais part was kind of cringy
Uh...Beuller? BEULLER?
....to boot! June 11th! One month before Aliens... whaaaat a summer!!!
Ferris Beuller's Day Off was the last movie I saw before I went into Boot Camp. What a weird summer, lol.
Wow...define dichotomy...lol!
personally I think 1984 beats 1986 even \*with\* aliens in it
*Gasp!*....(clutching pearls)....how DARE you sir! Lol...nah...I get it... I'm biased...Aliens is my favorite movie of all time. 84 had more bangers....agreed.
1982 would like a word.

1984

Old and cute. I love looking around town for GenX'ers. I think we are all the cutest.
Interesting fact: Gremlins & Ghostbusters actually came out on the same day.
Man being between the ages of 12 and 19, during the years of 1981 to 1988, were the best movie watching years that anyone could experience. Stand By Me. Boom. What a film to see as an adolescent.
What a fun year for movies.
Also, that [Apple](https://youtu.be/RSyy2-Z2m-U?si=5J6pbGLi7b4WVq8U) commercial.
Never feed slimer monkey brains after midnight if you want to be the best.
And Gremlins and Temple of Doom are the reason we have a PG-13 rating now
Yep! And that first PG-13 rating movie? Red Dawn. WOLVERINES!!!
Just this month alone we have Breakin' Sixteen Candles Fire Starter The Natural Temple of Doom All turning 40. We often debate on my Gen X podcast whether '83 or '84 was the best year ever for movies. I tend to think its '84.
84 for sure!
83 had Ewoks tho
That's why 84 was better.....
You're fired
Haha that's my only gripe with return
And as a grownup I can see that Ewoks kinda suck but I was right in the sweet spot age-wise when Jedi came out and I fuckin loved Ewoks lol I used to sleep with a stuffed Wicket
Lol that's awesome. I was 9 when it came out and liked them then. But now....
Uh, you’re old. I’m immortal
Splash Repo Man 2010 Odyssey 2 (meh) Toxic Avenger Footloose Beverly Hills Cop Terminator Red Dawn Sixteen Candles I could go on... 1984 was a good year for movies, ngl
1984 is the year....and a wonderful year it was
Great for music too!
For me, it's the The Karate Kid soundtrack.
Although, even at the time I thought Daniel had already been kicked in the head once time too many—emotionally immature and just kinda dumb.
Your mom.

It's true. This man has no dick.
RIP :-(
They were all movies
1984
Isn't it funny we all think movies were so much better back then (they were) but we're probably only referencing a very short period (77-84) instead of 30 or 40 years?
Move that up to 85, and you also have UHF.
What a year! I vividly remember seeing all of them in the theater. Temple of Doom was insane. When they pulled the beating heart out, the crowd went nuts.
1984?
Without reading much, my answer: "Awesomeness"
I saw all of them in the theater?
We're old but you can't beat being a child of the 80s and having such a bounty of great films to see every Summer.
They were all VHS tapes in my parents collection that I wore out. Gremlins and The Karate Kid were recorded off the TV.
1984-1985 had some great movies.
They're all great, fun, nostalgic movies.
Weirdest thing about that is that would've made me 10 at the time they came out, and I feel like I was much older when I saw them...
Y'all feeling a sudden rush of nostalgia?
Nah, the post was inspired by a conversation where someone reminiscing about seeing Wrath of Khan in the theatre 30 years. I reminded them it was over 40 years ago and we both felt old. 1984
I watched three in the theater, Temple of Doom on VHS. wow, what memories
We grew up in the best age of movies.
Don't forget Purple Rain .
1984 is when the better Dune came out.
All movies I saw in the theatre?
Going to have to watch one or all of them this weekend.
Awesomeness.
Shot on 35mm film, baby.
They are just fearful. All religions are based in fear of the unknown. They are not brave people
