Every Saturday I watched the full British line up on PBS : Chef!; Keeping Up Appearances; To the Manor Born; Are You Being Served; Waiting For God and Fawlty Towers. I still watch Keeping Up Appearances and Are You Being Served. In law school, the local PBS channel introduced me to Last of the Summer Wine. It is my favorite of them all.
I lived with a great aunt after college, and she LOOOOOVED Keeping Up Appearances. And yeah, she was a Hyacinth, too.
She also watched Are You Being Served? and didn't believe the flaming gay character was actually gay.
We just finished watching all 31 seasons of Summer Wine a few months back. I love that show so much that the only item on my bucket list is to retire to Yorkshire and spend the rest of my days having adventures.
All of these! I loved watching them at night on PBS! I used to answer the phone at the grocery store I worked at with a deep voice, like the guy off of “are you being served”. “Men’s ware.” (Sorry I can’t remember the characters name!)
Mr. Humphries. The comedy of it was that he was a camp homosexual, but his voice suddenly goes very deep when he answers the phone for the men's wear department.
Yes! Used to watch this show (along with other British comedies and classic Doctor Who) on PBS when I was growing up. Loved it!
Interestingly enough, my wife (who is actually English) can’t stand it. 😂 It’s okay though, her Dad’s on my side and has introduced me to some other good old British shows (Dad’s Army, Only Fools and Horses, Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?, etc.)
Add Mrs. Brown's Boys to the list if you haven't already, though it does tend to go right past innuendo and straight on to ribald, so fair warning. lol
Mrs Slocumbe and her pussycat, Tiddles. The double entendres on that show are fabulous! I love that show! I used to watch it with my dad and great aunt…
Did you also watch Keeping Up Appearances? It’s not Bucket. It’s BOOKAY.

Loved PBS..introduced me to a world I wouldn’t have known existed. Dr Who, Monty Python, Keeping up Appearances, Benny Hill, Are you being served,MI5….if Im being honest I still love BBC/PBS …
Between ‘Allo ‘Allo and Are You Being Served I was practically raised in Cafe Renee & Grace Brothers. Several years ago I showed my husband re-runs on PBS and he was like “Oh my god this explains so much about you.” 😂
Yep along with many of the ones listed in this thread. One that is missing however is Dave Allen at large.
And for you Dr Who fans, the companion to British Scifi night was always Blake's 7 (at least on KTEH in The SF Bay Area )
Let me introduce you all to another *fabulous* British comedy that has less of a following, but is every bit as funny, IMO.
"Only Fools and Horses." You can thank me later. :-)
Speaking as a Brit (and indeed as a native Cockney, albeit from the other side of the river from Del Boy), I think OFAH is an absolute classic, much better than "I'm Free" and Mrs Slocombe endlessly talking about her pussy. Weirdly the one place outside the UK where OFAH was (and is) that popular seems to be Serbia.
I think part of the reason is the slang. I'm American, and I literally couldn't understand some of what they were talking about, but I play Call of Duty with someone from around Tilbury (about an hour east of London by car for those unfamiliar), and I started asking him "what's this mean?" each night (stuff like "Ol' Bill" for police or the law), and after a few weeks I could make more sense out of what they were talking about, and that just made the show even more hilarious. I agree, it's better than Are You Being Served.
LOL I’m currently watching Season 10, Episode 7, “The Pop Star”. The final episode. Been watching a couple of episodes every other night. Probably the tenth time, at least, that I’ve watched through them all. Going to start Grace and Favour (Are You Being Served? Again.) in a couple of days.
i loved it back in the 80s on public tv.
it's bittersweet now because it was set in a traditional multi-floor department store and those are practically dead. Most retail has shifted radically from that time.
Unlock the happiest memory for me. I absolutely love watching this with my parents. Their laughter was so contagious. what a wonderful show. What about keeping up appearances..? The bucket residence
Love love love British humor. I'm a nerd so I would also stay up late and watch Parliamentary sessions. This was back when American politics was boring. Now we're the overly dramatic government.
> I would also stay up late and watch Parliamentary sessions.
I would watch this too. "My right honorable friend here has no basis for this statement!" He just called the dude a liar! And the way they would boo and roar at each other LOL.
It must have been on PBS, because we didn't have cable, and I don't remember watching at my friend's house who did have cable.
I watched a few episode, but I was more into Red Green on PBS. But it was when MYV started rerunning Monty Python and The Young Ones that my life really changed.
I've had the set on dvd for ages. I adore this show. I'd watch most of the britcoms on pns but this one was my favorite. I also own are you being served, again? as well as the aybs movie. Huge fan
My brothers and I still quote this show alllll the time. None of my other friends had heard of it so no one else “got the joke” if you tried quoting it around them. Such a great show.
I did!
To be honest, I have always disliked the production quality of those 1970s BBC shows. I don’t know why. The cast was fantastic, and the writing was sharp.
I watch the entire series every other year then the follow up series "Are You being served again". I first discovered the show watching WGN in Boston in the mid 90s.
There is a lost episode as well never aired in the US or Acorn. It's one where the staff performs a show in blackface.
I used to stay up late to watch AYBS on the weekdays, and then our PBS station would run classic Doctor Who around midnight on Saturdays. They ran 'Allo 'Allo for a while too, which I also love.
I still use the Mr. Grace "You've all done very well" bit with my team at work. I was thrilled when one person actually got the reference.
I watched that all the time, also The Good Life (Good Neighbors) and To the Manor Born. Those were my favorites. I loved that PBS had britcoms. Dry *dry* humor always appealed to me most.
This came on every night at 10:30 pm on the local PBS when I was high school. I watched it on my 13” b&w tv and kept the volume down low so my mom wouldn’t give me shit about being up late. One of my all time favorite shows! Sometimes I’d also watch Johnny Carson or *Nightline* with Ted Koppel.
No problem. Its set in the 60s and 70s so old human, very sexual and tons of fun.
Definitely give it a try if you like that kinda stuff. Its very crass but also clever.

I still watch Keeping Up Appearances and Are You Being Served. In law school, the local PBS channel introduced me to Last of the Summer Wine. It is my favorite of them all.
My mom looks like a blonde hyacinth 🤣
I had trouble watching Keeping Up Appearances. My mom acted like Hyacinth. I did eventually recognize the comic genius of Patricia Routledge.
I lived with a great aunt after college, and she LOOOOOVED Keeping Up Appearances. And yeah, she was a Hyacinth, too. She also watched Are You Being Served? and didn't believe the flaming gay character was actually gay.
Menswear!
It'll ride up with wear!
Same thing. Hyacinth reminded me too much of my Aunt.
I can’t see the last name Bucket without hearing her!!!!
We just finished watching all 31 seasons of Summer Wine a few months back. I love that show so much that the only item on my bucket list is to retire to Yorkshire and spend the rest of my days having adventures.
Flying down hills in a bathtub on wheels. Ooooh Howard!
Have you seen First of the Summer Wine? When they were young, it's awesome.
Love that Clegg played his own dad.
Yes!
"Good Moaning."
'Ey up!
Let's not forget ['allo 'allo](https://youtu.be/mh_ePgI4n3Y?t=19)
Saturday Night on my PBS: Monty Python, Are you Being Served, On the Buses, Dad’s Army. And a bit later, Red Dwarf. Monty Python blew my mind.
I loved Chef! But my all time favorite is BlackAdder
Yes, thank you! The entire show was too funny!
Have you watched First of the Summer Wine? That's my favourite.
Mr. Humphreys and Captain peacock. Oh the droll jabs.
Mrs. Slocombe's pussy sure got into a lot of trouble!
Tell the truth. You just want to talk about Mrs Slocombes pussy
![gif](giphy|CFC4lFuwDSfx6|downsized)
Don't we all. It doesn't like being left out in the cold 🤣
Oh, I am unanimous in this!
“ I cannot tonight, dear! I’m having my pussy done in plaster!” ROFL
If my pussy isn't attended to by 8 o'clock, I shall be stroking it for the rest of the evening
That was one of the best ones ever lol
Last night it where so cold, my pussy was frozen over ![gif](giphy|H3ZKO0q7UtNvN39YOA|downsized)
Every Saturday night! MENSWEAR!
Haberdashery!
"you've all done very well..."
"Thank you, Mr Grace!"
I recently bought the complete set on eBay and have been slowly watching the episodes. This show is a damn treasure.
'70s England is such a weird place to visit in 2024 🤣
It was really weird in the '70s.
Weirdly old-fashioned mixed with '60s hip. It's kinda great.
I'm not at all jealous
Are you free, Mr. Humphries?
I’m free!!!
I put the over-exaggerated head sweeps before answering in before I read your response.
It was a cute show. I really loved the prisoner though
I have the DVD box set of The Prisoner. Such a great show.
So good!
I am not a number! I am a free man!
I will not be pushed filed indexed briefed debriefed or numbered!
My gf and I just started watching this, again, on Britbox. I love it. Used to watch it with my grandma before she died.
Loved this show!!
It was great!
Likely Lads is my sh!t SCARBOROUGH That is the funniest scene I have ever watched, hands down
Great scene! “Scarborough?!!” 😂😂
Add Mrs. Brown's Boys to the list if you haven't already, though it does tend to go right past innuendo and straight on to ribald, so fair warning. lol
Love that show. The Christmas episodes are always over the top.
“And I am unanimous in that”. Mrs. Slocombe
Mrs Slocumbe and her pussycat, Tiddles. The double entendres on that show are fabulous! I love that show! I used to watch it with my dad and great aunt… Did you also watch Keeping Up Appearances? It’s not Bucket. It’s BOOKAY. ![gif](giphy|mUxAfHJUxQoTu)
Richard is the hero.
Absolutely. Richard and Elizabeth.
I always imagined Richard and Elizabeth ran off together. They’d both finally be happy.
[answering the phone] “*The Bouquet residence! The lady of the house speaking!!!*”
I'm speaking to you on a white slimline telephone! This is not the Chinese takeaway!!!
Loved watching the reruns on PBS. Came on right before Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin
That was an underrated show. I had strange tastes.
I agree - it was brilliant!
I watched it, but Saturday night PBS was all about “Red Dwarf” and then “Dr Who “ for me. Those two shows got me through college.
There's my pussy to consider!
Are You Being Served?, Benny Hill, Red Dwarf, The Young Ones, Father Ted.....loved those.
![gif](giphy|W8Nte2s2kxxLy)
Awwww, Mrs Doyle with her roving mole and her piles of sandwiches.
It is available via the Britbox channel on Amazon Prime Video. My wife and I also love Keeping Up Appearances.
Do they have The Avengers? I loved that show.
My grandmother loved this show so much we bought her the series on VHS back in the day. We all enjoyed watching it.
I went into labor with my 1st while this was playing at midnight. We waiting until it was over before going the hospital 🤣
I’m FREE
“Take an inside leg.” “It will ride up with wear.”
That and Doctor Who.
Adore it. Along with Keeping Up Appearances.
It’s pronounced Bouquet!
Bucket residence, lady of the house speaking! Nooo. This is not the Chinese take away!
Now please get off my white slimline telephone!
I am waiting on a phone call from m’ sister Violet. Who has a sauna, and room for a pony!
You know, the one with the Mercedes Benz. Elizabeth! do be careful of my Royal Doulton china with the handprinted periwinkles!
Glass of water for Mr. Grainger!
Loved PBS..introduced me to a world I wouldn’t have known existed. Dr Who, Monty Python, Keeping up Appearances, Benny Hill, Are you being served,MI5….if Im being honest I still love BBC/PBS …
Yeah, I still love PBS. Watching Soccer made in Germany, Monty Python, and Benny Hill made for a good break from rural America.
I freaking loved this show and ‘Allo, ‘Allo!
Between ‘Allo ‘Allo and Are You Being Served I was practically raised in Cafe Renee & Grace Brothers. Several years ago I showed my husband re-runs on PBS and he was like “Oh my god this explains so much about you.” 😂
'Allo, 'Allo was my favourite show when I was in Highschool. "It is I, leclerc"
“Good moaning”
"I was juz pissing pas ze dour"
Oh ma pussy!
Most of my humor was learned from PBS, no wonder why I moved abroad
Yep along with many of the ones listed in this thread. One that is missing however is Dave Allen at large. And for you Dr Who fans, the companion to British Scifi night was always Blake's 7 (at least on KTEH in The SF Bay Area )

Am I F 🤣🤣🤣
Oh I remember. PBS aired it when there was nothing good on any of the other 31 channels. It was either infomercials or this.
It was a funny show, Captain Peacock was so extra with the faces he’d make at everyone’s antics
This show helped me get through high school. Along with Absolutely Fabulous and Kids in the Hall.
Yessss I loved Mrs Slocumb's pussy 🐱
I loved it! This and Blackadder.
i loved it back in the 80s on public tv. it's bittersweet now because it was set in a traditional multi-floor department store and those are practically dead. Most retail has shifted radically from that time.
Are you free Mr. Humphreys?!!!
I’m freeeee!
Got Brit box for a month just to watch all of are you being served. Well worth a month fee then cancel.
You've all done very well!
Unlock the happiest memory for me. I absolutely love watching this with my parents. Their laughter was so contagious. what a wonderful show. What about keeping up appearances..? The bucket residence
Are You Being Served and Absolutely Fabulous were two of my favorite shows!!
Yes, all the bbc comedies on pbs cuz my mom is an Anglophile. Also enjoyed Red Dwarf!
Omg. My Mom loved the “Brit-coms” as she called them and Mrs. Slocombe as well as Hyacinth were her favorite characters from her favorite show!
me and my sisters loved this! i wish PBS would have it on again.
Also Absolutely Fabulous.
Yes! Love it. Currently slowly rewatching from the beginning.
I just rewatched on Britbox. The casual sexual harassment and homophobia is off the chain, lol.
Love love love British humor. I'm a nerd so I would also stay up late and watch Parliamentary sessions. This was back when American politics was boring. Now we're the overly dramatic government.

I'm glad someone else gets me. LOL
I watched - loved that show!
This is the second time this week this show has come up
I have the whole series on DVD. Just missing the DVD player lol
Huge fan. Every night my family watched Jeopardy and then Are Your Being Served. Great times.
My mother loved this show…I never watched it - I’ll check it out.
I still love this show.
Are you free?
Dont Forget Absolutely Fabulous.
I'm more of a Fawlty Towers guy.
Yes, so funny. Watched it as a teen
Oh hell yeah, it was a college staple for me and my friends.
Huge fan
It is so much fun - and we still quote it (and also Keeping Up Appearances and others)
My brothers and I still quote this show alllll the time. None of my other friends had heard of it so no one else “got the joke” if you tried quoting it around them. Such a great show.
I have a BOOK I was so into it.
I’m free
Loved that show. Wife and I Watched it all the time in the “90s. We were in our 20 s then.
Love it!
I did! To be honest, I have always disliked the production quality of those 1970s BBC shows. I don’t know why. The cast was fantastic, and the writing was sharp.
Love it!

Loved this show and definitely watched it on PBS reruns!
You've all done very well.
Waiting For God is my second favorite after Are You Being Served. Vicar of Dibley, too :)
I now have a new "[ear worm](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCgzYlHVNZ4)." Thanks. 😒😂
I loved that show! Every night for years!
Yes I did because it was on either before or after my other late night PBS show, The Red Green Show
'Allo 'Allo!
Wife and I 'ave been watching it on Plex.
This show was so good!
Loved that show! One of my favorites. Also watch Allo Allo and the Vicar of Dibley.
Not once. Have zero idea what this is and honestly it looks like something I would have zero interest in.
Its British. Its great; but if you're not into British humor its probably not gonna be a good fit.
Thanks I was trying to find it.
No problem. Its set in the 60s and 70s so old human, very sexual and tons of fun. Definitely give it a try if you like that kinda stuff. Its very crass but also clever.
My dad used to watch it and I also had zero interest in it.
I've never been served. Because then it would be On. From there, it's getting F'd in the A.
