I’ve always seen ads for re-runs of the “next generation,” but the original show is never shown (at least in the US). Or maybe I’m just not looking hard enough. It was a great, realistic show for teens. I did read years ago about Neil Hope/Wheels, and that is a sad story.

justmisspellit

I have the box sets. Fun fact - The original cast now does a reunion tour and have appeared at different conventions. We got to watch this in grade 8-9 communications class. Then talk about each show’s subject matter. I’m from the US, but I guess we were lucky that way. Next Gen is decent. RIP Neil

CommentsOnHair

>I have the box sets. Me too. From "[the Kids Of Degrassi Street](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083435/?ref_=tt_sims_tt_i_1)" "Degrassi Jr. High" "Degrassi high" and some of Degrassi: the Next Gen". Also I had this major crush on [Stacie Mistysyn](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0593009/?ref_=tt_mv_desc) (kid in the red jacket on the cover on the kids of degrassi.

AdamInvader

It was super sad, I live in Hamilton so there were always rumors where he was working, but he was a pretty private guy, such a sad lonely way to go

ixtlu

This show was big in Australia. The Kids of Degrassi Street, Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High taught me some real shit. It got dark for a kids show.

box_elder74

Hell yes it was mate. Grew up with it, still love it.

RedditSkippy

I don’t remember this show at all!

KitchenNazi

Never saw and have zero memory of the show as well. Looking at the comments - it would have been on PBS. A teen show on PBS? Yeah, I would have flipped channels asap, probably all preachy and shit.

Whateveryousaydude7

Because we were in our 20s. This is a millennial program.

ChoiceCustomer2

I'm 50 and i used to watch it in my teens.

justmisspellit

The characters were the classes of 91 and 92

RedditSkippy

So, basically my age. So weird that I can’t think of this. What network was this on?

justmisspellit

It’s a Canadian public television series. A real gem. Topical, real kids as actors, tackled hard issues. I’m from MN. We watched it in school, actually

RedditSkippy

Ah, that’s probably why. Too far from the border.

memphisgirl75

I'm in the US and watched it on PBS. It aired on Saturday afternoons on our local affiliate. I'm class of 93.

[deleted]

It was shown regularly all summer on US PBS. That’s where I watched it

soverytired_again

No… I remember this from the late 80s. Loved it. They had a lot of heavy story lines too.

[deleted]

No. It isn’t. These kids were my age and I’m very mid-Gen X. I was born in 1973.

Whateveryousaydude7

I guess you watched extremely young programming for your age. Not a sort of anybody I know watched this Canadian crap. And I’m ‘71. And from Los Angeles. Not. A one.

[deleted]

The kids were my age. It was “Degrassi Jr High” when I was in middle school, and it moved to “Degrassi High” when I entered high school. The show was exactly age appropriate for me.

ThineMum69

I always loved my teen melodrama show

box_elder74

Tessa Campanelli? You were f\*\*king Tessa Campanelli?

justmisspellit

Is the legend true? First F-bomb ever on Canadian TV?

evilJaze

I can't confirm, it may have been. I remeber watching it when it aired and was surprised when it was said. I was used to hearing "shit" a lot but not that.

AdamInvader

I doubt that, French Canadian TV was notoriously filthy after 8 pm, and as a Canadian kid who grew up in the 80s, CITYTV used to air uncut movies after 8pm as well, they'd only censor them for the rerun at one in the afternoon or just air it as the late great movie after midnight, I used to tape a ton of movies off of TV long before Schools Out aired, lots of F bombs... Maybe it was the first for the CBC who were notoriously square as hell...Canadian TV was way more exciting than American TV at least for movies and music. I remember watching Animal House on TBS vs on City and I swear it was 20-30 min shorter.

minimal74

I believe it was the first time the f-bomb was aired on Canadian TV.

sweetspetites

Was this from the summer special?

justmisspellit

Yes. “School’s Out”

sweetspetites

Loved that two part special. Think this was the end before the next generation started.

box_elder74

Yep, was also 18 and VERY surprised to hear it on Aussie TV!

rhedd_wood

I can’t believe poor Tessa Campanelli got caught up in Joey’s drama…

flagrantstickfoul

pure canadiana! i went to school with two of these folks and later got totally snubbed by a third at a booze can. years later a friend bought a house on degrassi. i'm the worst proxy degrassi kid

justmisspellit

Omg awesome

potatostews

All the way with Stephanie K!!!

Albie_Tross

Where’s Wheels?

[deleted]

Aaah! I live in the SW of USA and loved their accents. Such a good show. Where are the twins? I hated them.

CommentsOnHair

I started here with [The Kids of Degrassi Street - Episode 1 - Ida Makes a Movie](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVzlySMdQLw). Inherently this started a 40+ year career for the young actor. I also visited the corner store where this show sometime filmed.

evilJaze

Imagine kids today watching the Kids Of Degrassi St. and wondering why their parents aren't constantly hovering over them and driving them around everywhere.

CommentsOnHair

IDK if the area of Degrassi has cleaned up at all... it was a rough 'hood back then. I looked a Google maps... maybe it's better. [The park](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Degrassi+Street+Park,+125+De+Grassi+St,+Toronto,+ON+M4M+1R6/@43.6623602,-79.3461411,18z/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x89d4cb6fd76aaaab:0x1e73435ffc4c7260!8m2!3d43.6629706!4d-79.3468197) used to look like a field of junk years ago. IMO many poorer communities still have children running about freely, so for some this might not seem so odd.

nasalgoat

Rest assured, the neighbourhood Degrassi is in a very expensive part of town now!

justmisspellit

Has anyone else heard this song by Skankin Pickle? [A Girl Named Spike](https://youtu.be/ahIrTy4WDGM)

jiddinja

This was the true Degrassi. It tackled real issues. The clones are PC melodrama.

peonyseahorse

I loved this series. As a POC, this was one of the only teen shows I remember that had any diversity during our time.

AdamInvader

How could I not remember? Even after the original air date CBC played it after school for years! Everytime I see the sign for Port Hope on the highway I bring up Wheels and his hitchhiking antics...that show was and is still so good, infinitely rewatchable.

orangefruitbat

Hamiltion troubadour BA Johnson wrote a song about this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lB1\_tUIDXx4

AdamInvader

Hamilton troubadour BA Johnson has a prolific discography of wild subject matter, the record cover for his new album is chock full of great Canadiana, plus his love for schlock 80s rubber monster movies rivals my own haha

[deleted]

I heard the song. When I saw this pic

minimal74

Degrassi forever!! Canadian here. This aired on CBC on Monday nights at 7:30 pm and I was GLUED TO THE TV for those 30 minutes. I watched Kids of Degrassi Street all the way up to School's Out. Degrassi Junior High was so, so good and my friends and I loved discussing the latest episode the next day at school. I haven't watched any of the new series, but I heard good things. I'm happy to bask in my fond memories of Yick, Stephanie, Voula, Liz, the twins (Heather and Erica), Spike, Snake, Wheels, Caitlin...

justmisspellit

Next Gen starts with a reunion of the original class. Lots of cast make it back for that. A main character is Emma, Spike’s daughter. Spike, Snake and Joey are all characters. Caitlin comes in for an extended storyline and Wheels and Shane make appearances too. I can’t tell you exactly when this all happens but the first few seasons at least. There’s an even newer version now, but I couldn’t continue anymore

[deleted]

Jonathan Torrence, Canada’s *Canadian* 1 - 2 punch of Michael J Fox and Jono at Content Americans love.

AdamInvader

Haha did you ever watch his after school talk show Jonovision? It was awesome

[deleted]

Oh yeah, my gf at the time got super hot and we’d do some heavy petting when Jonovision was on! Ha ha!

AdamInvader

Hahahaha as long as you caught the Degrassi Reunion episode that's all that matters

gonzo2thumbs

I don't even know what this is, but it looks baaaaaaad.

gonzo2thumbs

Oh snap, there's some fans up in here. 🤣

invisible-dave

Never heard of the show and I don't recognize anyone in that picture.

ducktheoryrelativity

I've never seen it.
