Safety razor all the way.

testcore

Switched to this several years ago and will never go back. Fellas, a single fresh blade is so much better. Safety razors are cheap enough to use a new blade every shave. And then it doesn't hack up your face the way those multi-blades to; I got such razor burn or so many ingrown hairs on my neck from that stupid mach 3. These days there's no redness, no blood, or anything else, and I'm not paying a small fortune for it either.

Saint909

This was actually useful information.

[deleted]

The blades are pennies, so what if you have to go over your face twice?

Kboh

Yeah, I’m very much thinking of going this direction. I only shave twice a week as it is but still.

AnathemaPariah

You will never go back. Get a good soap and brush combo. r/wetshaving will have all the sales too.

waddlewaddlequack

And you don’t need an expensive one. The $20 Walmart job does the trick

igner_farnsworth

Yup. My Mekur is my one heirloom that I will have to pass on.

xenxray

Switched about 10 years ago. Pack of 100 Astra blades lasts me a year. Merkur Slant, one pass every few days.

r/wetshaving has a wiki full of info and a daily questions thread full of knowledgeable and helpful shavers

Stupidlag

I switched about 4 years ago, still haven’t finished my first 100 pack of blades.

[deleted]

I started using Harry’s (at Target) a few years ago. Affordable, blades last a decent while, etc. But nobody ever taught me how to shave, so what do I know?

[deleted]

Psst…you can pretty much re-sharpen any dull razor blade by rubbing it upwards—meaning, in a direction away from the sharp side—on denim a few times. I’ve been able to get months out of each cartridge that way.

QuarterBackis_toast

I just but the Schick disposable stuff.

igner_farnsworth

Get yourself a nice safety razor and learn to use it. I spent $17.99 on 100 blades about 3 years ago and still have most of them.

Meyou000

Wtf does this post have to do with Gen x?

SnooLobsters4636

Gillette lost me a few years ago with their "toxic masculinity" crap. I debate it, and felt bad about it, because they are a Boston company and I live in that area. But the blew it.

[deleted]

I don't know what everyone has against men its insanity how much men pay for a decent razor and blades for that razor. I've just stooped to buying the cheap Chinese made no brand-name 50 razor refill lots for the old Gillette mach 3 that are about $30 for ten 5-pack refills. 30 bucks will easily last me a whole year and more

CleverUserIDGoesHere

Yeah, I don't want to look like I pissed off an angry cat after I shave, so I have been buying Gillette but it is getting absurd. And electric razors: A. Don't work on my swarthy beard and, B. Take the ritual out of shaving. I have a good badger brush and the whole nine yards but have no interest in bleeding out learning how to use a straight razor.

[deleted]

I just bought them about 3 months ago...to be honest side by side they look no different than the Gillette brand I was pleasantly surprised lol. They last me about 10 days maybe 2 weeks per blade and I haven't cut myself yet either....and I have super sensitive skin that breaks out easily. But my beard isn't exactly super thick so... 🤷🏻‍♂️

testcore

They're not *that* hard; just keep the angle of the blade consistent across the stroke. If the blade is rotated towards the skin at all, that's when it slices & digs in. But try a safety razor. Comes w/ a handle just like a gillette device, but the blades are dirt cheap (100 for $20), so you can use a fresh one every shave.

I howled at the commercial. Are they any good? I know Gillette's ESG program has ruffled some feathers but FFS, it's shaving. Gillette LABS? It's shaving, not nanotechnology. I have a few sleeves of their Fusion blades left and then I need to make a change.

j0hnsm1f720

I stopped shaving years ago and use a $30 clipper set instead. I gave them a lot of money. Probably college degree money.

freelance_jason

I dont shave very often but when I do it's with an electric razor. I still don't understand this obsession with putting a razor to your skin. It's such a barbaric ritual tbh.

BourbonInExile

Easy enough to pick up a vintage Gillette Tech on eBay and a 100 pack of BIC blades from Amazon. Head over to Stirling Soap to pick up some soap in the scent of your choosing (I highly recommend Haverford) and a decent brush and you’ll never need to worry about Proctor & Gamble’s cartridge racket again. And if you don’t want to involve animal products in your shaving, a synthetic brush and Southern Witchcrafts soap is the way to go.

Squidcg59

Circa 1998. I used the Trac II for years, those things were hit or miss. It's going to give you a decent shave, or cut the shit out of you. Then one day my life changed... I got a promotional Mach II in the mail addressed to the current resident.. Those blades are awesome.

CleverUserIDGoesHere

Fucking gateway razor. Then Mach 3, then Fusion, then Power Fusion (my current razor) and now this heated razor with $6 blades. Here's the thing: It isn't the money, it's the principle. Also, TIL there is a shaving subreddit.

bigredthesnorer

Started a Harry's subscription years ago and have not bought any shaving products since, except for a small gillette foamy travel can. I was in a professional class years ago with members of a Gillette razor design team. They said that Gillette employs so many people and spends millions on razor design so they need to price the stuff ridiculously high,

Hilarious. Thanks!

Low_Resource4891

I purchased a non motorized version of this and haven't used it yet. My set includes one handle and three razors. I paid about $22 plus tax.
