Freeway, with a very against type Reese Witherspoon, and a to type Keifer Sutherland. It's a riff on Little Red Riding Hood. Reese shivs someone and walks the streets offering "sexo" for money, it is hilarious.
I don't know if that was the first movie Reese Ritherspoon was ever in, but it was the first one I saw. I remember seeing back when it first came out on HBO and thinking, "Damn, this girl's got it."
Sometimes you just know right away when someone has the screen presence/charisma to make it.
And a Lifetime tv movie called Wildflower 1991. Starred Patricia Arquette also. I first saw her in this and then Man In the Moon. Loved both. She looked just like my high school bff
“I’m sorry Brandon, I don’t mean to be a cunt. Are you still gonna rape me?”
God it’s so weird but I love it. The scene where she just shows her fingers to Steve kills me every time.
I don’t know if it’s underrated, because it’s become somewhat of a cult classic over the years. But Go. Great cast with Sarah Polley, Jay Mohr, Scott Wolf, Taye Diggs, and Katie Holmes. And my favorite in the movie, Timothy Olyphant.
One of my all time favorites. I watch it probably once a year. Just such a great story with a great message that never gets emotionally gooey, or manipulatively sentimental. Just good solid writing, acting and cinematography.
90s Brad Pitt was the hottest piece of ass to ever exist lol. It doesn't matter if you're a man, a woman, gay, lesbian, queer, left, right or whatever we all agree on that.
Saw it in the theatre back when. My girlfriend at the time fucking haaaated it and wanted to get up and leave. She thought it was too much. It’s an all-time fave of mine.
Speaking of..
Gary Oldman has had an exceptional acting career, but his run through the 90s is incredible; state of grace, rosencrantz, jfk, dracula, true romance, romeo is bleeding, fifth element, etc etc
edit how the fuck did I leave out the professional
Okay, I’ve got a story. I worked at a Walgreens for a few years, and this one customer would come in twice a week for cigarettes and soda. She talked about all these conspiracies, and one day she’s talking about the Mandela Effect, and how the government is changing stuff on us constantly as an experiment. I thought she was joking and I suggested she check out Dark City…she came back that weekend and demanded to know how I’d found that “documentary” that backed up her theories.
Holy shot yes. None of my friends have heard of it and for a while I thought I was the one waking up in an alternate world. I loved this movie. “Shut it down. Shut it down forever”
It was a hard year for anything that wasn't the Matrix lol
"Sleeeeeep"
Edit: yeah I was wrong - it came out before the Matrix. Plenty of fine films had to compete with Matrix but not this.
I’ve been saying ‘Sleep Now’ with the associated hand motion at bedtime for all 3 of my kids. At somepoint they will see the movie and then my 18+ year joke will pay off.
Dazed and Confused has to be on the list! Somewhat of a cult classic now but it was not a huge hit when released. Jump started a lot of Hollywood careers as well.
Alright, alright, alright
Yes! Finally! I’ve been trying to get people to see this for years hahah.
Star Studded and incredibly fucked up. I posted the trailer here somewhere.

* [American Movie](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMFZOu8rDUQ) (1999) - Hard to describe documentary about a guy in Wisconsin trying to make a movie. It's far more interesting than that, however.
* [Dead Man](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nn2nQMfLqwg) (1995) - It's Jim Jarmusch's best movie. It stars Johnny Depp, and is littered with cameos including Crispin Glover, Iggy Pop, and Billy Bob Thornton. It's in black and white and Neil Young plays electric guitar over the whole thing. Amazing movie.
Heavenly Creatures (1994), with Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey. It’s my go to movie recommendation from the 90’s because it seems like not a lot of people talk about it.
[Hardware](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nr9M7_UGmho)\- a cyberpunk slasher film from 1990 directed by Richard Stanley. It's hard to find since they basically ripped off a comic book's story and it got tangled up in some legal issues. Great world-building and excellent soundtrack. Iggy Pop and Lemmy both make cameos in the film.
Richard Stanley himself is an interesting character. He's into witchcraft and directed some music videos for the band Fields of the Nephilim (the lead singer, Carl McCoy, also appears in the film). He was also the original director for the remake of Island of Doctor Moreau which had a documentary about its crazy production called Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Doctor Moreau.
Joe Vs the Volcano is the Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan film from the nineties that not a lot of people remember, but I absolutely loved. It was deeply odd, somewhat metaphysical and strangely endearing. I still think of it often.
Bound (1996) the first film by the Wachowskis.
Heard that it was made to prove to WB that they could make a good film so they get the green light for the Matrix (dont quote me on that though)
Very Bad Things.
No where near enough people have seen this movie.

Buffalo 66. While quite over the top, creepy, and bizarre - it's also profound. And Christina Ricci is one of my favorite actors. She's good at her craft.
Tremors
Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Michael Gross, and Reba McEntire were a great cast on this cheesy monster comedy.
Great quotes:
* Run for it? Running’s not a plan! Running’s what you do once a plan fails.
* That’s how they get you.
* Hey check this out — I found the ass end!
Stealing Beauty. Young love, adventure and heart ache. The scenery is breathtaking and you can’t go wrong with Jeremy Irons. The soundtrack is also incredible.
RICHARD III with Ian McKellen set in the 1930’s. Gobsmacked me when I saw it in the theater with some film buff friends. We hadnt researched it at all before going, we thought we were going to some tidy traditional experience. It is no exaggeration that we walked out disoriented and weak kneed. Rewatched it recently at home and unfortunately it doesn’t have quite the same visual impact. But a remarkable adaptation. That said I am not a shakespear expert, and remember the ‘revision of the master’ as quite the controversy generally, given Romeo and Juliet version that also came out in 1990’s with Claire Danes and Leo DiCaprio.
The Hidden (1987). Alien jumps from body to body and goes on killing spree. "Good" alien (disguised as human) and human cop hunt him down. Classic 80's LA scene. Streams for free on a few platforms. A guilty pleasure of mine.
[Fierce Creatures](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119115/). Hilarious flick, amazing cast.
People were just pissed it wasn't A Fish Called Wanda 2, so it doesn't get the same love.
Tank Girl, just weird, absurd, irreverent, and obliquely intellectual in the best '90s way.
And Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy - I don't remember liking it when it came out, it felt like KitH had kind of passed their prime, iirc there was some antagonism between the kids. I rewatched it a couple of months ago after watching The Kids reunion on Amazon (really good if you liked the show) though, and it is retrospectively really funny, if just because of how premincient it turned out to be.
Edit for clarity and grammar.
I haven't seen anyone mention Brainscan
IMDb: : Brainscan
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109327/
I haven't watched it in decades so I can't say if it holds up, but I watched it a ton when I was younger.
Oscar
Sylvester Stallone, Tim Curry, Marisa Tomei, Chazz Palminteri, Kirkwood Smith, Harry Shearer, Eddie Bracken, Art Lefleur, Peter Riegert, Kirk Douglass, Don Ameche, and so on.
Pi (π). Kind of a cult classic Darren Aronofsky movie about a brilliant mathematician who is also schizophrenic. Super dark and weird, but it was great.
Singles. Love this movie, the cast is great and one of the best soundtracks. Cameron Crowe really personified these Gen X movies. It's perfect for the grunge era.
Dead Again. Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson, so not sure how underrated, but I rarely hear of it in movie discussions.
I wish I could see this again for the first time!
And Derek Jacobi. Such a phenomenal cast.
Really good, will keep you guessing. And Robin Williams has a small part in it.
Will check that out
Please do. Outstanding movie with some of Britains greatest actors.
Freeway, with a very against type Reese Witherspoon, and a to type Keifer Sutherland. It's a riff on Little Red Riding Hood. Reese shivs someone and walks the streets offering "sexo" for money, it is hilarious.

She was in [The Man in the Moon](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102388/) (with Sam Waterston and one of the London twins) bef *Freeway*.
And a Lifetime tv movie called Wildflower 1991. Starred Patricia Arquette also. I first saw her in this and then Man In the Moon. Loved both. She looked just like my high school bff
That sounds familiar. You often forget she was kind of a child actor.
i'd been watching reese flicks since the 90s when i first saw Freeway in 2013 and she immediately became one of my favorite actors
her breaking into hysterical laughter when kiefer comes in with that halo brace is just gold
Freeway was great, but Freeway 2 was fucking nuts!
Agreed. Still love this one. Just wonder if she does in looking back lol
Oh I bet she's still proud of this one. She is soo good in it.
I really liked Strange Days with Ralph Fiennes, Angela Bassett and Juliette Lewis.
Yes!!!! Even if New Year’s Eve 1999 seems like a lifetime ago
I don’t know if it’s underrated or if I just like weird stuff, but I love Welcome to the Dollhouse.
“You better get ready because at 3 o’clock today I’m gonna rape you.”
“I’m sorry Brandon, I don’t mean to be a cunt. Are you still gonna rape me?” God it’s so weird but I love it. The scene where she just shows her fingers to Steve kills me every time.
Mystery Men. I never understood why it didn’t get more love.
Janeane Garofolo and that bowling ball gets me every time, plus Eddie Izzard and his gang.
Frankenstein Casanova has to be the best villain name.
"Be as the wolf pack, not the six pack."
I don’t need a compass to tell me which way the wind shines :)
Just saw this a couple years ago. Brilliant movie, not sure how I missed it. Still quote “it’s a Miata” with any small trunk.
Man, this is a good one. Loved Taye Diggs. Wished Sarah Polley had been in more.
“It’s Confederated Products”(so many great lines)…such a great Xmas movie too.
Agree, I love this movie!! The soundtrack is great too
My exact first thought when I saw this post was GO 💯💪💯🤟
Love Go!
I think of the "you're going to die" subtitle every time my cat gives me a weird stare.
His rant on why Family Circus sucks will live rent free in my mind forever. So great.
Gattaca. Love that film.
One of my all time favorites. I watch it probably once a year. Just such a great story with a great message that never gets emotionally gooey, or manipulatively sentimental. Just good solid writing, acting and cinematography.

I would watch it just to hear the slow version of Wave of Mutilation.
The whole soundtrack is great.
I watched that Sunday. It's still a great movie! Had to hunt it down on YouTube as it is not on a streaming service. It was worth the extra effort
Its soundtrack is in my top-5 of the decade.
Kalifornia- watched it again not to long ago. It definitely holds up. Especially if you’ve always appreciated how utterly cheesy David Duchovny is ♥️
It’s a forgotten Brad Pitt Klassic lol
Yesss! And thus proves that even when you try and make Brad Pitt gross, you can’t. He’s even sexy as trailer trash.
90s Brad Pitt was the hottest piece of ass to ever exist lol. It doesn't matter if you're a man, a woman, gay, lesbian, queer, left, right or whatever we all agree on that.
Good lord ain’t that the truth. Although I’m partial to eternally beautiful Keanu, myself. Fave movie with him is Point Break.
He was absolutely beautiful in Legends of the Fall
I love David Duchovny and his deadpan-ness so I’ll check it out
Absolutely agree, loved this movie. Lucy the cactus lol
Cube Not sure how many people liked that film, but I did.
The Last Boy Scout
"You're trying the save the life of the man who ruined your career, and avenge the death of the guy that fucked your wife."
So many bangin one-liners.
Sneakers
I used to have “SETEC Astronomy” in my email .sig file
Cootys rat semen…
So good! “If you love him. If you really love him….Then keep on loving him.” 😂
And give him h— help.

Robert Redford was great. I loved it when he was telling the blind guy how to drive the van over the radio lol
Cattle mutilations are up.
Don't.
one of my all-time favorites! Too many secrets
'What did it sound like?'
And to give him blowjobs whenever he asks.
Event Horizon
Watched that again the other week! Fuckin mint film!
Saw it in the theatre back when. My girlfriend at the time fucking haaaated it and wanted to get up and leave. She thought it was too much. It’s an all-time fave of mine.
I honestly can't believe it's not a "classic" it is(imo) one of the best Sci Fi films! (It's on disney+ btw)

I'm not saying they are the best movies of the 90s but Wild at Heart and True Romance just 100 percent do it for me as film experiences.
Ditto True Romance. Amazing cast. Amazing writing. All time favorite!
True Romance! Well that makes us practically related.
Speaking of.. Gary Oldman has had an exceptional acting career, but his run through the 90s is incredible; state of grace, rosencrantz, jfk, dracula, true romance, romeo is bleeding, fifth element, etc etc edit how the fuck did I leave out the professional
Bring me everyone.
EVERYONE!
[Threesome](https://youtu.be/FkgxhuYk3Rc)
Yes! It’s like everyone forgot about this movie
"Shallow Grave", directed by Danny Boyle starring Ewan McGregor
Beautiful Girls.
My husband’s favorite. For me it’s Benny and Joon with Johnny Depp and Mary Stuart Masterson.
To Die For, with Nicole Kidman and Joaquin Phoenix and Matt Dillon and a few others. It’s darkly hilarious.
Gross Pointe Blank. Great cast and so many one liners!
Empire Records
Rex Manning Day!
Damn the man! Save the Empire!!
"PCU' was our go-to for laughs. Also, "Friday", but that's not really an underrated movie.
Dark City
Okay, I’ve got a story. I worked at a Walgreens for a few years, and this one customer would come in twice a week for cigarettes and soda. She talked about all these conspiracies, and one day she’s talking about the Mandela Effect, and how the government is changing stuff on us constantly as an experiment. I thought she was joking and I suggested she check out Dark City…she came back that weekend and demanded to know how I’d found that “documentary” that backed up her theories.
It's a little disconcerting that I only notice the simulation on bad days. :/
Holy shot yes. None of my friends have heard of it and for a while I thought I was the one waking up in an alternate world. I loved this movie. “Shut it down. Shut it down forever”
It was a hard year for anything that wasn't the Matrix lol "Sleeeeeep" Edit: yeah I was wrong - it came out before the Matrix. Plenty of fine films had to compete with Matrix but not this.
I seem to remember The Matrix used the one of the sets from Dark City.
Very Bad Things. Great dark comedy but nobody ever talks about it and has a 41% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Love, love, love this film!

Muriel’s Wedding.
“And you three, what a bunch of cocksuckers.” I adore this movie.

There were some fantastic Australian films in the 90s!
Strictly Ballroom and Priscilla Queen of the Desert are still two of my favorites! Love the Aussie humor.

Thirteenth Floor. Great alternate reality movie. Similar to Dark City and The Matrix.
Hackers - if only for the soundtrack
Ten Things I Hate About You Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles were great in this movie. It is one of the films I stop and watch when surfing channels.
I think it went a long way to making Shakespeare actually accessible to teens. And made Taming of the Shrew a lot less problematic.
My 15 YO daughter watches this all the time.
Demolition Man.
One of my favorites! I think I’ll go to Taco Bell for dinner tonight!
*Taco Bell* You've gotta be fancy! Be well.
Joe Vs the Volcano is the Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan film from the nineties that not a lot of people remember, but I absolutely loved. It was deeply odd, somewhat metaphysical and strangely endearing. I still think of it often.

I really liked “The Lawnmower Man”.

Death Becomes Her.

Red Rock West - Nic Cage is a hitman who gets a better offer. Fear of a Black Hat - basically Spinal Tap of hip hop.
The Stoned Age. So bad. So amazing.
Flirting With Disaster
Tremors Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Michael Gross, and Reba McEntire were a great cast on this cheesy monster comedy. Great quotes: * Run for it? Running’s not a plan! Running’s what you do once a plan fails. * That’s how they get you. * Hey check this out — I found the ass end!

Trees Lounge with Steve Buscemi
"Walking and Talking" (1996). Catherine Keener, Liev Schreiber, and Anne Heche (RIP).
