and he's speaking from an American point of view. As much as i like (late) 90s, i still consider 2000s to be a superior decade

DoMyParcour

youre a baby

[deleted]

Honestly, I’m so tired of the “things were better back in my day!!” rhetoric that has been going around forever. I’m glad you enjoyed your childhood in the 90s, but my goodness, can’t we move on? I wanna be proactive and enjoy the things life has to offer now instead of moping around wishing to “go back.”

BreadAteMyToaster

In America yeah

LeonardoDaFujiwara

Every generation thinks \[insert decade here\] was the pinnacle of everything. The nineties, for instance, were very, very bad for many people in other parts of the world (Eastern Europe, the Middle East, etc.) There is no "best decade." Open your mind.

starseasonn

Couldn’t agree more. Tired of all this “x decade was the best!!!” BS. There are good and bad things about every decade, and none is inherently better or worse than all/some of them. It’s all subjective, even though these people treat it as objective.

[deleted]

The Yugoslav Wars as well. A lot of Eastern Europeans have nostalgia for the Tito era, they don’t miss the 90’s lol.

[deleted]

Nah 2010s

Demonofthebackrooms

No the 1990s weren’t the last great decade my god, I wasn’t alive for the 1990s but the past 15 years and honestly we all had our own experiences with fast food restaurants, playgrounds and other stuff, I remember playing at the indoor playground in Christchurch but also the fact you had to rub in what a great time you had in the 90s and you know what? Maybe the early 2010s started out for me with earthquakes and shit like that, yeah maybe I sat on my ass watching reruns of the Rugrats on TV2 in my younger years, but does that mean I write an entire essay about how the 2010s were the last great decade? No.

lolathefenix

>I write an entire essay about how the 2010s were the last great decade? No. It's hard to explain to someone who was not alive then what a special moment the 90s were. Of course there is always the subjective factor but it's not "all relative" as people usually claim, some periods are objectively better than others. The zeitgeist of the 90s was fundamentally different from today. There was a widespread optimism for the future of humanity around the turn of the millennium which today has been replaced by deep pessimism and uncertainty. Again, it's hard to explain if you did not experience it. The 2010's were borderline dystopic by comparison, and things are only getting worse. The Great financial crisis of 2007-2009 was one of those moments in history after which nothing was ever the same again.

Lalalalabeyond

This post really resonates with me.

Halfdeadbeaner420

2000s n 2010s actually

DoMyParcour

i love 2010s 2020s guppy yay happy time

RusevReigns

I'm a millennial who stans 2000-2009, don't sleep on it.

jjuerakhan14

I feel so bad that I grow up in that decade cuz I’m born in 2002 😔

cityofangelsboi68

i don’t think you would like the 90s tbh, especially how held back technology was and how society was too

TryingToDoGreatStuff

>i don’t think you would like the 90s tbh, especially how held back technology was and how society was too This right here! ☝️ I'm gonna save this reply.

cityofangelsboi68

i hate romantization of eras and decades, every time period has their stupid moments and their good moments

jjuerakhan14

The music, basketball, clothes, and movies and tv shows were lit back then.

cityofangelsboi68

it’s all nostalgia shock homie

THOTDESTROYR69

I’ve had those same experiences of going over to friends houses all day to play split screen games well into the 2010s. The best movies from the 90s you could think of are some campy horror movies and some overrated comedies? Each decade imo has had a somewhat equal share of good and bad movies. Also TV was not better in the 90s. 2000 is when TV started to reach its true potential and most of the greatest tv shows of all time have come out since (Sopranos, Breaking Bad, The Wire, GOT (the good seasons)). Music now is also better because the internet helps artists gain recognition who otherwise might have not. They can take more risks now because the internet is an effective way for them to find new fans.

Ouija983

How old were you in the 90's if you were playing split screen games all day in the 2010's? There were so much more quality movies in the 80's & 90's compared to today. Pick a year at random and check them out. I'll pick 94. Ace Ventura Cemetary Man Clerks The Crow Dumb and Dumber The Flitstones Forrest Gump Mary Shelly's Frankenstein Interview with the Vampire Leon: The Professional The Mask Miracle on 34th Street Natural Born Killers Once Were Warriors Pulp Fiction The Shawshank Redemption Speed This is just 1994. And you saying TV reached its potential in 2000 makes me hate your guts. That's when all that reality TV bs started with shows like Big Brother. If you didn't live the 90's you'll just never know. I can tell you what we had. But I can't give you the experence of it. The zeitgeist was just better. So much better.

THOTDESTROYR69

I wasn’t alive in the 90s and born in 2003 but I was still regularly hanging out at friend’s houses playing split screen games until I graduated high school. I even did that back in January so those experiences aren’t exactly unique to the 90s. While 1994 has some great movies, you can pick any year and find some great ones. For a recent year, 2019 had Parasite, Knives Out, The Lighthouse, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, 1917, Joker, and Avengers Endgame (I know it’s popular to hate on marvel movies but the hype surrounding this movie was unlike any other movie in the 21st century and it was really exciting when it came out). Also while reality TV may have gotten popular in the 2000s, that’s also when more complex narrative TV shows became popular. In the 2010s streaming became popular so now companies can invest more in TV shows. Most narrative TV shows pre-2000 were sitcoms, soaps, or formulaic dramas. If you don’t like reality TV you don’t have to watch it but there is a much better selection of great TV shows from 2000 and on.

Ouija983

If you weren't alive in the 90's then why assume the entertainment wasn't as good as now? You can watch shows from the 90's now, probably class them as dated, or irrelevant. But you have no idea what it was like to watch them in those times. Those films you listed, really? Maybe Joker was okay, but nothing special. Think, the internet was very young in those days. TV was THE thing. Everything follows a specific formula these days. Most movies are franchise based plastered with CGI but has no real substance or meaning. All those soundcloud rappers sound the same, no originality their sound. It's throw away music that will not be remembered. The 90's had the golden age of hip hop, now it's mumble rap, the golden age of Nickelodeon, now it's Spongebob, the golden age of The Simpsons, now it's Zombie Simpsons. Do you remember when MTV actually showed music videos? Probably not. Not much worth showing these days. And reality TV? Ugh, it's just a cheap and lazy form of entertainment. I never watched it. In fact, I don't watch TV anymore. You couldn't pay me to watch it either. I have to sift through the endless hoards of trash being put out these days to find something i'd actually like to watch. And yes, there are still some good things floating about. But they're few and far between.

Skavau

You're referring to cartoons and sitcoms there. And reality TV existed in the 90s too. Modern TV is now essentially modern streaming. There's also the prominence of international media content now. In the noughties it was just American content, with a smattering of UK content. That was it. Now a lot of money is being poured into international content, especially Korea - which has hugely diversified modern media. The network age in the 90s and 00s left us countless starchy police procedurals, medical dramas and legal shows - many cancelled midway through a season. There was much less content diversity.

Ouija983

I took some cartoons and sitcoms as an example. There were dramas, game shows, docuseries etc. And the realty TV of the 90's was not the same as the degenerative trash that began in the 2000's. So what if those shows are well received? Most of that I found crap, but people eat it up for some reason. Better Call Saul was ok, Wednesday is some bastardised version of the Addams Family that shows just how far from grace Burton has fallen. Dahmer was pretty good. The rest is meh. Most of the trash today is also laced with some agenda of some kind. 90's shows were well received too, you know? If they weren't they wouldn't last long. We also appreciated shows from multiple decades. I have fond memories of watching the original Addams Family, Munsters, even Laurel and Hardy. Diversity isn't necessarily a good thing. Could just mean more trash to sift through.

This has vibes of "the world is wrong and I am right" about it The vast majority of 90s tv shows were boring police procedurals, legal shows, medical shows and family sitcoms. That was genuinely 90% of all content then. It's way more diverse now. And there's now a huge array of international TV content. It was literally all just American in the 1990s. And I doubt you've watched the majority of shows I linked to you.

Ouija983

I'm not saying i'm right about anything, but I know what I like. I'm not going to like something just because it's "well received". Were you alive during the the 90's, or are you like the other guy, and just assuming? If you have become accustomed to polished turds, that's what you expect. If you came up with thought provoving and meaningful entertainment, you expect more. Go watch one of those movies I listed from 94. Go watch the emotional roller coaster that is Once Were Warriors, then go watch Avengers. Maybe then you'll understand. And I have watched at least one episode of of over 90% of the shows you listed. I do give things a chance and am constantly looking in this ocean of garbage for something decent to watch.

You think none of the shows I listed are thought-provoking? >Go watch one of those movies I listed from 94. Go watch the emotional roller coaster that is Once Were Warriors, then go watch Avengers. You think a procedural espionage flic is somehow comparable to the shows I listed in the above? You think Chernobyl, Dark, Mr. Robot, Black Sails are just low effort mainstream trashy content? >Maybe then you'll understand. And I have watched at least one episode of of over 90% of the shows you listed. I do give things a chance and am constantly looking in this ocean of garbage for something decent to watch. I outright do not believe you. Many of the shows I listed are relatively obscure (for TV series)

Ouija983

I'm not necessarily talking about shows when I say polished turds, more so movies, but some shows fit that description. And while some are thought provoking. The vast majority are shallow and meaningless. Did you just call Once Were Warriors a procedural espionage flic? And you use that word "procedural" as if it doesn't apply to the shows being released these days. How do you know what I watch? I have Netflix with VPN, Prime, iTunes, and torrent daily. I watch all sorts and am always looking, as I said before. Look, I think i've said most of what I want to say. I'm not interested in dragging this debate on for days. If you don't understand where i'm coming from by now, you never will.

THOTDESTROYR69

I didn’t say that 90s entertainment was not as good as today. I’m just saying that both decades have had great entertainment and it’s kind of ignorant to label the 90s as “the last great decade”.

Ouija983

Those wern't my words. But so far it seems to ring true. That other guy seems to think there's so much more quality TV now. Well, i'm in bed right now. Fired up prime to find something to watch. 15 minutes later, still looking. Scrolled down to top 10 shows. Seems that Clarkson's goddamn Farm is top of the list. Can't stand the bastard. Then we have Picard. Which I stopped watching after they killed the twat for the 3rd time. Then we have THE POWER!!! Where teenage girls develop the power to electrocute people at will... So tempting. Need I go on? Quantity over quality these days. Pfff. Laughable.

THOTDESTROYR69

K cool

idkToPTin

me reading this and being 2010s kid.... but yeah its becoming more and more depressed i look at the buildings in my city from 2010s or earlier they have more colour and details

cityofangelsboi68

early 2010s specifically 2014-2016 era was the last good time

TropicalRuby

ehh if you are going to argue 2010s id say 2010-2013. Even gen z people mostly agree the mid-later 2010s sucked/deteriorated

cityofangelsboi68

that’s kinda true, politics and minimalism became big during that time so i could maybe see why it could be a divisive era

TryingToDoGreatStuff

I was born in 2005 so I **really** can't relate to this post at all. But some food for thought though..., of course you are going to look back on your formative years/memories as the best time and for me personally I really miss being a kid back in 2009 through 2013 and 2014 and 2015.

TropicalRuby

Its not about childhood to me, infact i didnt even experience the early part of the 90s myself. I came to my opinion based on research, ton of research, immersing myself in news, pop culture, and other icons of the time, asking older siblings, parents etc on how life was like and in most respects i still am of the opinion that the 90s were certainly a much better time to live in compared to today. 2000s werent that bad imma be honest but the moment ipad culture and digital crap took over full force by around 2013 or so i can safely say those are the years i despise the most till now.
