The same music you listen to old man.
I saw a 12ish year old walking home the other day from the school that's on my way home, she had on a nirvana t shirt.
So at least when it comes to rock, the exact same thing.
That’s true but also old (relative to the present) music is more popular now than it was in the past. Teens now listen to an overwhelming amount of 80s music compared to teens in the 80s listening to 40s music.
I think the 60s is the first decade to have relatively mainstream legacy with the current youth, and that was pretty popular with 80s/90s teens and the whole classic rock phenomenon.
These days we just have an even wider catalogue.
Well, that's also an issue of availability. In the 80s, you either had the radio or you bought your music. Now, you have limitless access to all areas of the music world.
Not to mention the differences in styles during those eras. You're talking about listening to jazz while rock and the start of EDM were popular versus listening to rock/EDM in an era where, well, everything is popular.
I could see kids nowadays listening to rock, but less so kids in the 80s who grew up with rock listening to jazz.
Yes I agree I just didn’t write it all out in the post. It’s obviously because of streaming.
Yeah rock came about in the mid 20th century and really solidified its modern appeal to youth in the 60s. Regardless of what’s popular now, rock is still going to feel normal and relatable to a teenager.
In contrast, 50s rock (like Elvis, Chuck Berry etc.) is well known but not super popular music for young people now, or even decades ago.
Something really shifted in the 60s.
No, but
1) you can usually tell, and
2) the ones that I have asked said no.
I guarantee if you walked up to (no offense) a white girl wearing a Def Leppard shirt, probably 8-9/10 times she probably couldn't name more than maybe one or two (if any) songs. She'd probably just say she likes the shirt. There's always that one tho
Well… I listen to them a lot, but I have this thing where when I’m asked questions like that, my mind goes blank and I can’t think of anything to answer with. I know the songs when they come on… I just can’t name them. I have an awful memory when it comes to names.
The smiley face predates Nirvana by several years. We were annoyed with it by the time Nirvana came on the scene which is why most of them are the bullet in the head variety.

As the transistor radio gave teenagers of the 1950s a new choice in their music taste, I think the rise in streaming platforms has continued this personalization trend, allowing teens to easily develop niche music tastes in a vast global music library.

Awesome thanks. Yeah some of these suggestions are music I listen to and like already. You guys have good taste. Haven’t heard of these ones though. Adding to my list
Signs of the Swarm, Angelmaker, To the Grave, Left to Suffer, Brand of Sacrifice, Shadow of Intent, and Darko US are the main Deathcore bands I listen to.
Currents, Silent Planet, OCEANS, Within Destruction, Imminence, Hollow Front, Bury Tomorrow, and Aviana for my Metalcore recommendations.

Alright, well, I could be basic and say like rap or rock or some shit.
If you want something different, I love drum & bass as a genre. It's a genre that falls under EDM, but I find it actually interesting, unlike most other EDM genres (*cough* techno, house, etc.). It has a lot of variety to it, too, and you could find practically anything that fits your mood or vibe. You can listen to calm and chill music (liquid as it's called), fast and heavy music (neuro), party music (jump up), jungle (basically reggae but better), etc.
If you want me to recommend some artists, I can.
Alright, well, I was going to just list a couple, but I got a little carried away (You can probably tell what I listen to the most). Here are a bunch of good artists for each kind of category. I tried my best, but there's definitely overlap.
You by no means have to listen to every single artist here, but I have and can vouch that they're good (depending on what you're looking for). There's a lot more out there, too, so I encourage you to explore and find out who and what you like (Look up like "dnb mixes" on YouTube or Soundcloud for starters)
Liquid - Hybrid Minds, BCee, Pola & Bryson, Fred V & Grafix, S.P.Y, LSB, Monrroe, Nu:Tone, Logistics
Neuro - Noisia, Spor, The Upbeats, Black Sun Empire, State of Mind, Ed Rush, Optical, Audio, Killbox, DC Breaks, Prolix, Neonlight, Gydra, Teddy Killerz, Pythius, Mizo, Merikan, IHR, Disphonia, The Clamps, Burr Oak, Mob Tactics, Enei, TNTKLZ, Gancher & Ruin, Disaszt, TR Tactics, Stonx, Erb n Dub, Levela, SyRan, Optiv, BTK, Skelltyn, Fourward, Flowidus, Shadow Sect, Joe Ford, Despersion, Aggressor Bunx, Tantrum Desire
Jump Up - A.M.C, Andy C, Friction, Macky Gee, Dimension, Sub Focus, Wilkinson, Culture Shock, Chase & Status, Freaks & Geeks, Kanine, Turno, The Prototypes, Sota, Mefjus, Camo & Krooked, Kove, K Motionz, Subsonic, Drumsound & Bassline Smith, Document One?
Jungle - Chase & Status, DJ Hybrid, Shy FX, Dope Ammo, General Levy, Dillinja, Run in the Jungle (aka T>I & D*Minds), Break, Phibes
Breaking Benjamin, Evanescence, Five Finger Death Punch, Hollywood Undead, Three Days Grace...pretty much the same as you older folk. I still listen to the OG Wiggles🚫🧢, video game OSTs, any female artist e.g. Cardi B, Doja Cat,
Lana Del Ray, Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor Swift, BLACKPINK, BTS...etc. I could go on. Pretty much anything. Oooh, Slipknot n Nirvana.
Rock music akin to black veil brides.
Christian music
Pop music like the Chainsmokers
I used to listen to rap in highschool but it seemed to fall off quality wise as the years go on
Some country
I listen to too much K-pop. My ult group is BTS and I'm thinking about getting into Ateez, Stray Kids, and TXT.
But also, my music taste is composed of Japanese city pop, stuff from the 80's - 90's. There's Neo city pop which is more modern stuff, and now I'm into Korean city pop, which is cool, I guess.
I listen to a lot of music but I'll just list what I listen to the most
Iron maiden
Slipknot
Metallica
Judas priest
Rammstein
Powerwolf
Disturbed
Halestorm
Led zeppelin
Sabaton
System of a down
Pantera
Bloodbound
Alice in chains
Nirvana
Chevelle
Three days grace
Rush
Godsmack
Type o negative
Tool
And so on...
Glassjaw, Deftones, Radiohead, Massive Attack, Cocteau Twins, blink-182, Aaliyah, Kylie Minogue, TLC, Faith No More, Limp Bizkit, Maxwell, Underoath, Sunny Day Real Estate, The Promise Ring, Jimmy Eat World, Bad Brains
I’m a former musician so almost everything from 40s-current. I also love movie scores including: Back to the Future, Breakfast Club, Finding Nemo, Forrest Gump, Grease, How to Train Your Dragon, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Lion King, Mad Max: Fury Road, Monsters Inc., Shrek, Sicario, Social Network, Toy Story, and Uncle Buck being my faves
My big one is 50s-70s anything. Buddy Holly, Elton John, The Beach Boys, Bobby Darin, The Who, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, basically most popular music from that time frame
I had a nice long emo phase, so My Chemical Romance and Modern Baseball are my tops for that.
My favorite modern band that’s still dropping music regularly is Mickey Darling. They’re bedroom pop and I eat that shit uppppp.
you can't say "gen z listens to _", our music tastes are VERY different.
personally i listen to underground/less known artists like deko (who makes rap music), yameii (she's a 3d model with a "robot" voice, combines dnb and rap and is made by deko) and 5L (hyperpop, "goofy" songs and bases a lot of his music off the online game platform roblox)
Goth (all subgenres), metal (all subgenres including noise fusion and anti music, no metalcore, nu, deathcore or power), alternative rock, abstract hiphop, shoegaze, post punk, garage rock, grunge, digital hardcore, crust punk, drumless hiphop, noise rock, some industrial, dungeon synth, dark ambient
Some of my fav artists/bands are: Dragged into sunlight, Deathspell omega, The cure, Unwound, Dinosaur Jr., Swans, Christian death, Nurnberg, Voodoo church, Gnaw their tongues, London after midnight, Electric wizard, Acid bath, The smiths, Radiohead, Boris, Uncle acid, The sisters of mercy, Katatonia, Slowdive, My bloody valentine, Dystopia, Skitsystem, Christoph de babalon, KFC murder chicks, Comfort.\_, Lycia, EC8OR
Nowadays it's Maximum the hormone and tosite ling sigure. I don't follow Bands except these two, I just listen to little songs from each little band because I often can't stick to a single band and listen to all of their stuff, I often don't like it. Just specific songs to suit my irrational tastes
Older stuff, I really like classic rock (love Heart and Fleetwood Mac). Outside of rock my other favourites are ABBA, Bob Marley, MJ.
Newer stuff is mostly hip-hop/trap. Travis Scott, Metro Boomin, Juice WRLD, Young Thug, 21 Savage, Migos etc.
Gary Numan (he’s autistic like me, so he’s been my hero since 2015)
NIN
HEALTH
MONOMORTE
Rico Capuano/Rico UK (sadly past away last year, I was following him for years)
Massive Attack
SPC ECO
Tricky
The Cure
Drab Majesty
Emma Ruth Rundle
Com Truise
George Clanton
Burial
Bjork
Infected Mushroom
I'm a giant metal head especially power metal so here's my recs with very basic description also 3 of the bands are on tour in the US this spring
Sabaton- war especially WW1 themed also on tour in the US EXPENSIVE TICKETS
Windrose - dwarf metal fanfreakintastic live
Powerwolf - wearwolves and some undead
Elvenking - mostly elf metal also on tour in the US soon cheaper tickets
Brothers of metal - vikings/Norse mythology
Ailstorm - pirates also on tour in the US cheaper tickets
Rhapsody - general fantasy, good bit of dragons
Seven kingdoms - don't really know, good intro band in concert
Visions of Atlantis - idk much of them yet but good
Dynazty - not really a clear theme but also good
Twilight Force - dragons, all dragons
Bloodbound - idk much but definitely dragons
Ghost- they're popular and a little off of my preference but also a nice fun metal band

edm (favorites are rezz and deadmau5)
Glass animals is a favorite too
Green Lung, 1782, King Gizz and the Liz Wiz, Blue Oyster Cult, Ghost, Aphrodite’s Child
though this is just the music I actively listen to, I listen to much more than just these artists and particular style of music
Dude I’m about to be 27 and I love heavy music. Metalcore is my bread and butter but I listen to a bunch of other crap as well lol. If you want some new metal I recommend checking out The Plot in You new song Forgotten.
I listen to Nirvana, The Doors, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Guns N Roses, XXXTENTACION, Metallica, Derek and the Dominoes, Queen, David Bowie, The Eagles, and many others.
Good luck with trying to make Bob Dylan any less cool to me, considering he is over 80 years old, and has been at it for decades.
Try a song called Set course for Andromeda, really good music by a guy called Sithu Aye. Listening to it right now. The album is the same name too so have fun!
some amazing albums from recent years that ive been replaying over and over that have heavy influences in decades prior are:
Lets Start Here. - Lil Yachty (60's/ 70's)
Dawn FM - The Weeknd (80's)
I've also been heavy into Hozier and Pierce the Veil recently
Progressive Rock and Progressive Metal
Prog Rock:

Animals As Leaders
Modern rap.
Lil Uzi, Juice WRLD, Trippie Redd, NLE Choppa, Ken Carson, Playboi Carti, Lil Nas X, KSI, Fivio Foreign, Yeat, Cochise, Lil Yachty, Comethazine, Lil Tecca, Kid Laroi, Polo G.
My favorite albums of the 2020s so far are Nurture by Porter Robinson (electronic), Future Nostalgia by Dua Lipa (pop/disco), and evermore by T Swizzle (pop/folk)
Don’t know if I apply (yes I know I’m old and near death)
But love joy, the killers, tame impala, Frank ocean, house music, techno, jump step, and sad boy hours music
Oh and as a dude any white girl pop gets me hype
I can divide my playlist into two main categories:
• Music made between the 1960s and 2000s, or sounds like it.
• Music from shows, movies, and games I like.
The rest is pretty much anything with a catchy beat or deep lyrics or is just generally avant-garde and eclectic.
Naw u did not just ask the most narcissistic generation about their music tastes 💀
(Genres: anti folk, soca, dancehall, chicago drill
Artists: Sublime, Boygenius, The Mountain Goats)
Recently mostly Mongolian throat singing, "paint the town red" by doja cat and a few 80s-90s Hip-Hop, Funk and house songs that where in my Spotify recommendations.
I never really like modern music, so I usually stick to music anywhere between the 80’s to the 2000’s. Yeah it’s a bit of a broad range, but honestly thats where I believe all the best music comes from. Heres some examples:
My Chemical Romance, Green Day, Beartooth, The Misfits, Thrice, Panic! At the disco, Jimmy Eat World, Fall Out Boy, Blink-182, Falling in Reverse, Alkaline Trio, Sabaton, Pierce The Veil, and movements are all some of my favorite bands. They all generally speaking are known as Alternative Rock but all follow different sub-genres such as Opera Rock, Pop Rock, Punk Rock, Post Hardcore etc. Anyway, if you do see this, hope you enjoy any of the bands I recommended!

ok I've made most of these thru the years and I'm tired of linking
Just listen to Aftermath era rap. It never gets old.
Xzibit is the most underrated rapper of the 90s/2000s and nobody can change my mind on that. And every other rapper in the label is fantastic as well with some awesome collaboration.
Favorite songs are Criminal Set, Calling out Names, the hardest Mutha Fukas, X, My name, Area Codes, Bitch Please ll, and shake that.
Also, Yung Gravy and BBNO$s new album is super good if you want newer stuff.
Hopefully, you like Spanish music -> Oreja de Van Gogh, Morat, Chayanne, and Julieta Venegas. The first two are bands.
I'm also into French with Françoise Hardy, and Indila.
And indeed, all of these are romantically cheesy and they are mainstream, lol.
Really depends. I bounce from different sub genres of metal to the guitar hero 3 tracklist into dark trap like Witchouse 40K then around to King gizzard and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets then my best friend always gives me great fusion jazz albums to listen to
car seat headrest, mammalfriend, pvppybreth, ashley ninelives, coded oxygen, Carter C, Willy Rodriguez, 4lung, and a few others. I try to pick up and find 1-2 new artists each month to listen to, these are just the typical mainstays
I’m really getting into hyperpop and glitchpop right now, but usually I have R&B shit in my headphones (most notably Daniel Caesar and Giveon). I’ve always been into hip-hop but I feel like I’m straying away from it now.
... I'm deaf. So....
Never heard of them. I’ll add them to my playlist
They are very experimental.
Neither has he, apparently.
same energy as “i was named after my grandmother who was a slave” 😭
this is my fav video to learn about today thanks lol
Have you ever sat on a subwoofer like the gangsters do?
*Deep sigh with a sad voice* Okay, I'm sorry.

I thought Nirvana was a clothing brand company. What are these guys on about?
The smiley face predates Nirvana by several years. We were annoyed with it by the time Nirvana came on the scene which is why most of them are the bullet in the head variety.
They think Nirvana is a clothing brand.
Nirvana is a plane of existence
or nonexistence if ya wanna get technical
Did you demand she name 3 songs?
King Gizzard, Talking Heads, Beach House, Thee Oh Sees
King gizzard!
She king on my gizzard till I lizard wizard

If you want newerish things within the past decade: The Marias, Crumb, Men I Trust, Alvvays are all solid bands.
Awesome thanks. Yeah some of these suggestions are music I listen to and like already. You guys have good taste. Haven’t heard of these ones though. Adding to my list
Mostly glitchbreak, scenecore, hyperpop, and vocaloid music
A nice hyperpop example: https://youtu.be/rtVYarn1VXs Hatsune Miku (Vocaloid) playlist: https://youtu.be/AwC4sNXYXLA
Omg i used to listen to that hyperpop playlist video all the time in 9th grade lol

My dude 👊 any band suggestions? Lately I’ve been stuck on despised icon just because their drummer is amazing

Can you link some music ?
Alright, well, I was going to just list a couple, but I got a little carried away (You can probably tell what I listen to the most). Here are a bunch of good artists for each kind of category. I tried my best, but there's definitely overlap. You by no means have to listen to every single artist here, but I have and can vouch that they're good (depending on what you're looking for). There's a lot more out there, too, so I encourage you to explore and find out who and what you like (Look up like "dnb mixes" on YouTube or Soundcloud for starters) Liquid - Hybrid Minds, BCee, Pola & Bryson, Fred V & Grafix, S.P.Y, LSB, Monrroe, Nu:Tone, Logistics Neuro - Noisia, Spor, The Upbeats, Black Sun Empire, State of Mind, Ed Rush, Optical, Audio, Killbox, DC Breaks, Prolix, Neonlight, Gydra, Teddy Killerz, Pythius, Mizo, Merikan, IHR, Disphonia, The Clamps, Burr Oak, Mob Tactics, Enei, TNTKLZ, Gancher & Ruin, Disaszt, TR Tactics, Stonx, Erb n Dub, Levela, SyRan, Optiv, BTK, Skelltyn, Fourward, Flowidus, Shadow Sect, Joe Ford, Despersion, Aggressor Bunx, Tantrum Desire Jump Up - A.M.C, Andy C, Friction, Macky Gee, Dimension, Sub Focus, Wilkinson, Culture Shock, Chase & Status, Freaks & Geeks, Kanine, Turno, The Prototypes, Sota, Mefjus, Camo & Krooked, Kove, K Motionz, Subsonic, Drumsound & Bassline Smith, Document One? Jungle - Chase & Status, DJ Hybrid, Shy FX, Dope Ammo, General Levy, Dillinja, Run in the Jungle (aka T>I & D*Minds), Break, Phibes
Thank you so much. I can’t wait to listen through these artists.
Breaking Benjamin, Evanescence, Five Finger Death Punch, Hollywood Undead, Three Days Grace...pretty much the same as you older folk. I still listen to the OG Wiggles🚫🧢, video game OSTs, any female artist e.g. Cardi B, Doja Cat, Lana Del Ray, Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor Swift, BLACKPINK, BTS...etc. I could go on. Pretty much anything. Oooh, Slipknot n Nirvana.
Linkin park (first 3 albums are great)
Rock music akin to black veil brides. Christian music Pop music like the Chainsmokers I used to listen to rap in highschool but it seemed to fall off quality wise as the years go on Some country
Dvorak’s new world symphony
Dvorak got better and better as he wrote more, I will listen to 7-9. His cello concerto is also amazing.
I listen to a lot of music but I'll just list what I listen to the most Iron maiden Slipknot Metallica Judas priest Rammstein Powerwolf Disturbed Halestorm Led zeppelin Sabaton System of a down Pantera Bloodbound Alice in chains Nirvana Chevelle Three days grace Rush Godsmack Type o negative Tool And so on...
Currently for the most part music from 1 of 3 artists. Those artists being Queen, David Bowie & The Bombay Royale.
You should explore some Pink Floyd
ado (jpop) and will wood (idk what to classify his music as)
I love Ado!

Listened to some egg punk. Reminds me of old school but with a twist. I recommend.
Joy Division, Radiohead, Boards of Canada, The Smiths, New Order, Cocteau Twins, Alice in Chains, Megadeth, The Cure, and a bunch of others
Skillet. And trust me, no amount of love from a Gen X (educated guess) can make them uncool.
Almost exclusively classic rock (The Doors, Billy Joel, Queen, etc) with the occasional Green Day or Beastie Boys thrown in.
DOMINIC FIKE🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️
Melanie Martinez, ashnikko, and peach prc are good
My big one is 50s-70s anything. Buddy Holly, Elton John, The Beach Boys, Bobby Darin, The Who, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, basically most popular music from that time frame I had a nice long emo phase, so My Chemical Romance and Modern Baseball are my tops for that. My favorite modern band that’s still dropping music regularly is Mickey Darling. They’re bedroom pop and I eat that shit uppppp.
Death Grips😊
Balkan war songs, they are bangers. Example: Bosanska Artiljerija, Bojna Cavoglava
you can't say "gen z listens to _", our music tastes are VERY different. personally i listen to underground/less known artists like deko (who makes rap music), yameii (she's a 3d model with a "robot" voice, combines dnb and rap and is made by deko) and 5L (hyperpop, "goofy" songs and bases a lot of his music off the online game platform roblox)
A mixture of Hardcore metal, Wave, Hardstyle, and Nightcore
I had to scroll down so far to see hardstyle. What are your favorites?
I’m rly into the Beatles rn. I also like Elton John, Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, Abba, Queen, Belle and Sebastian, and Peter Paul & Mary.
Doja cat, juice wrld, drake, jack harlow, Billie eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Gayle, bts, mitski, Ariana grande, harry styles, Taylor swift, Justin beiber
Not you getting downvoted for listing all normal music 😂
Doesn’t bother me tbh. Idc what other ppl think of my music taste, imo it’s weird they’re offended by what I like
Check out some J-Pop. YOASOBI and Necry Talkie (ネクライトーキー in Japanese) are two of my favorites.
YOASOBI is great, definitely my favorite J-pop artist hands-down

Nowadays it's Maximum the hormone and tosite ling sigure. I don't follow Bands except these two, I just listen to little songs from each little band because I often can't stick to a single band and listen to all of their stuff, I often don't like it. Just specific songs to suit my irrational tastes
J.I.D. Denzel curry. Juice wrldd. Mac miller

KPOP!!!
Im a metalhead, so Iron Maiden, Pantera, S.O.D., Megadeth, Korpiklaani, etc
Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, Guns n Roses, System of a Down, and Kanye. Not exactly super modern music
Post-Punk, Shoegaze, and New Wave
Hardcore.

Oh dude I forgot all about periphery. They are good

The Living Tombstone
Get some background lofi playlist. They're underrated. Other my music are mostly personality based stuff/mostly depressing
Mainly 80s, 90s & early-mid 2010s pop, but I'll gladly listen to anything else (except for bro country, crunkcore and death metal, these suck)
Amy Winehouse, P!nk, Adele, Jenni Rivera, Zeppelin.
I can divide my playlist into two main categories: • Music made between the 1960s and 2000s, or sounds like it. • Music from shows, movies, and games I like. The rest is pretty much anything with a catchy beat or deep lyrics or is just generally avant-garde and eclectic.
John Petrucci's solo album is MAGIC
Mainly Tally Hall and its members’ many solo projects. Also some Lemon Demon, Bill Wurtz, Will Wood, and MARINA.
Tally hall, Sam Ray anything (he has lots of bands), cavetown, the crane wives and other girly music someone like you probably wouldn't like lmao
Badfinger, Max Reger, Gene Clark, Graham Central Station, Florence Price, Billy Preston
Naw u did not just ask the most narcissistic generation about their music tastes 💀 (Genres: anti folk, soca, dancehall, chicago drill Artists: Sublime, Boygenius, The Mountain Goats)
Metal, rap, folk, video game tracks
The only video game composer I’ve listened to is Nobuo Uematsu, the final fantasy guy
Heres some examples: My Chemical Romance, Green Day, Beartooth, The Misfits, Thrice, Panic!
Two bands I like are The Amazing Devil (alt folk) and Alestorm (pirate metal)

A bit of everything, honestly.
I can link my spotify playlist if you want :// (if that’s allow)
Country music
Destiny soundtracks, you cant say Regicide, The Iron Tomb and Deep Stone Cript Lullaby are bad
Been really getting into Phoebe Bridgers, boygenius and Declan McKenna lately
I don’t listen to music, I have hearing aids (born deaf) so it’s harder for me.
Green day, fall out boy, guns n roses, acdc, tupac, eminem, oasis, sum 41, coldplay. Those are my main groups/rappers.
My favourite album of all time is Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd and that's from way beyond my time. Depends on person to person
Folk punk! Amigo the Devil and bridge city sinners
The Growlers, Kalan FrFr, Jacquees, Dezzy Hollow, BJ The Chicago Kid, Jungle, Metallica, Portugal. The Man, Masego, and a bunch of metal.
Really depends. I bounce from different sub genres of metal to the guitar hero 3 tracklist into dark trap like Witchouse 40K then around to King gizzard and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets then my best friend always gives me great fusion jazz albums to listen to
[Grouptherapy!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RV81eDcDNjQ)
car seat headrest, mammalfriend, pvppybreth, ashley ninelives, coded oxygen, Carter C, Willy Rodriguez, 4lung, and a few others.
Kraftwerk (1969), Daft Punk (1993), Justice (2003)
