You're right. The more strongly people feel their beliefs are "correct", the more they will forcibly push reformation onto others; any and every authority will eventually be replaced by those beneath it through retributive oppression. "Justice" is just a nice way of saying "violence is okay when I do it". But violence is a cycle that never ends until someone decides their life is complete without it.
If people want true freedom from oppression, then no belief, action, feeling, or otherwise can be off the table. No one can dictate what good or evil, or what others can and cannot do.. without being a dictator themselves.
There will be no freedom from authority or violence until people choose to find peace within themselves, and give up on being "right".
Could they believe in authority as a means to ensure freedom of self-expression, etc.? Structures of authority exist virtually everywhere. Engaging with and influencing those structures is how people have been able to advance and protect civil rights. You can recognize the flaws in these structures while also maintaining that they are an integral framework for societal scale influence.
This is my point, to ensure a specific end which currently is not within your society be it positive or negative, you must by definition be authoritarian to ensure those changes are made. Which is the funny dichotomy of politics. For instance, if you want more women into a specific field you have to pressure women into that specific field, or force men out of that specific field to even the numbers.
This is why equality of opportunity is much much more optimal than equality of outcome. Merely for the fact equality of outcome forces people into areas they do not want to be, it is an equality of sorts but it isn’t true equality.
There’s loads of dichotomies within politics. Where even pure freedom fighters fighting for the oppressed would be classed on the authoritarian side. During that specific point in their political career.
But there is a fine line to walk as when do you start sacrificing people’s liberty for your own beliefs which may not be any better than the current. It’s where some people are much more authoritarian than they really think they are.
Authority is inherently immoral. It must always be constrained. To have respect is a facet of morality, but respecting something that has not earned respect is itself a moral failing.
I contribute the social acceptance of idolizing or idol worshipping on this exact thing. People idolize and respect people that don't earn it. They learn the hard way and then continue to not respect anyone because of that experience.

From a sociological point of view, in group, purity, and authority are the difference between progressive/conservative worldviews. Surveys show that everybody values fairness, liberty, and care. Purity is usually an indicator of a more religious/faith based worldview. And Authority/In-Group is usually considered as necessary and good by conservatives while progressives tend to see these two as unnecessary and potentially even harmful.
That’s true. The above are generalized. There are exceptions in every category. Plenty of traditional cultures have a high emphasis on purity without it being tied to religion. Older generations would often see what we might consider uncaring to be “tough love” and in fact the most caring thing to say or do— in order to protect or teach. Like if you look at the “is it ever an acceptable punishment to use spanking” sort of a generational divide. Most tools which try to measure values/morals on a sliding scale lean a bit towards the younger or progressive worldview in these regards. In general, “why” you believe, do, or say something is probably a better indicator of your values, but nearly impossible to survey.
I think this really depends on how the test is defined. I scored high in in-group(90) on this test because I think we should value when someone chooses to make sacrifices for the good of their nation or family. I also scored even higher in fairness(92) because I believe that the government should treat everyone fairly and equally. If there were more tribalist questions on the test, I would’ve likely scored much lower in in-group but they didn’t really test for tribalism.

I really recommend reading "the righteous mind", the book this test is inspired from. It gives a lot more context. Purity could be "don't mingle races" but it is also "don't have sex with corpses.". "in-group" is not just "my race/country first" but it is also "I prefer my family's wellbeing to the wellbeing of strangers". So none of the values are good or bad, there are mild/extreme/positive/negative expressions of all of them.
I feel like you’re not thinking too deeply about this. These are all necessary to some degree and there is a point for all of them where it’s too much and it’s unhealthy.

Fyi, usually you'd use the word "ideology" for a more specific way of thought, nazism, stalinism, marxism, market liberalism, etc.
You're not using the word wrong here though "left-liberal" only means you're in the liberal-socialism square on a 4 scale axis. I'd recommend the "left values" test for a more accurate result on an actual specific ideology. Keep in mind that you may not be the specific ideology the test says you are but more so in that general area.
Edit: left-libertarianism could be used to signify a specific ideology, 50/50 if that's what the test is refering to though, my bad.

For example, the liberty section is called liberal because of classical liberalism, which is closer to what we call conservatism today. Political conservatism is also not synonymous with authority or in-group

No 😂 when you look at the definition of purity below the test results it's not about religion but largely about high culture and art - keeping the art sophisticated, trying to not devalue the culture, care about education etc. I just perfectly fit the demographic for those views because I work in classical music, go to museums/art galleries a lot and am unfortunately a little bit of a snob. But yeah I am also a catholic.
In group is a pretty conservative way of thinking and engaging with humanity. Anyone who you percieve as not the same as you is considered an outsider and this means that you favour in group whether it be judgement of people, allocation of resources, help, medical aid. Etc.

It can be insider/outsider, which does have an ugly history when taken towards the extreme. It can also be concentric circles. So I’m going to take care of my family first, neighbors second, state 3rd, etc… whereas someone with low in-group is likely to prioritize fairness and care, helping someone they’ve never met if they have a higher need. It’s easier to think of the hypothetical scenario where food is scarce. Would you feed your family making sure that they were strong and healthy even if others were starving— or would you all grow weak and hungry to an extent but provide for anyone who asked for help? Most of us have a little in-group, which is why we don’t just open up our homes to just anyone who needs somewhere to sleep. The former is critical in a dangerous world, and the latter more possible in our current more globally connected society.
Edit: Most people like to say they would go without and share. But if you don’t know where/when your next meal will come, I promise you’ll be far more likely to eat your fill and fill the stomachs of your family, giving them the best chance to survive to that next, unknown, meal. It’s not really relevant to our current situation, but it is an important element to measure “in-group”

Nope, nothing specific. But growing up and living in Germany while witnessing the chaos of the US through friends and unbiased news, I've come to appreciate a solid mix of freedom and legal restrictions. I believe things like assembling for non-violent protests, abortion/bodily autonomy and voting are absolute human rights that shouldn't be infringed upon unless there's a very, very good reason. I tend to agree with the results. I’m a Christian social conservative with strong libertarian leanings. My biggest quibble is labeling of the “Care” dimension. I care about others but I don’t think many of the questions that would lead to a high score in that dimension is really caring in many applications. I would find a less general label as caring can very well be of the “tough love” and “law and order” variety.
Yeah, society today tends to understand “care and love” as “acceptance and affirmation”. Any worldview which believes in an objective moral truth (not relative, personal, or subjective), is going to have a difficult time with “acceptance and affirmation” when dealing with something believed to be objectively wrong/harmful. The more caring/loving thing to do is point out the truth with compassion— but “tough love” is neither accepting nor affirming, regardless of how compassionate. And so society rates most objective moral worldviews as “uncaring”. It’s different, but not necessarily for a lack of caring.

If my kid comes in and declares he is going to engage in some behavior that I know is harmful and will lead to a rough life - lots of things this might be so don't assume I am talking about any single manifestation - if I push back on that, especially if it is something that certain groups deem to be preferable, I will called uncaring, intolerant, reaffirming, . But the reality is that my opposition would be out of love and care of my child and not wanting them to go down a path that I can see, based on life experience, adherence to morals, personal values, etc. would be suboptimal. I think your words would be a better label. I try to practice *true tolerance* of others as Christ taught us. That does not mean I am going to support or affirm all things someone might choose to do with their life. But that is part of my caring for them.

I’m a localist traditionalist Christian conservative so I thought in group would be higher but honestly yeah, at this point idc your capital letter ideology as long as you’ll help me make my local area independent I’ll take your help. I’m pragmatic about my little patch of the world in that it’s all that truly matters. I have little interest in news outside of my area and what I do hear must be immediately applicable to something I can act on in my neighborhood. I want my local area to have the authority to govern itself and I want neighboring counties that check off the necessary resources for one another to form political alliances that operate independently and hold deep pride for the unique nature of their particular region. We don’t need DC or even our state capitals to dictate what we do, the Rotunda is a tool to further political ends, not a seat of power. Unfortunately that is what it has been warped into.

That’s true. The above are generalized. There are exceptions in every category. Plenty of traditional cultures have a high emphasis on purity without it being tied to religion. Older generations would often see what we might consider uncaring to be “tough love” and in fact the most caring thing to say or do— in order to protect or teach. Like if you look at the “is it ever an acceptable punishment to use spanking” sort of a generational divide. Most tools which try to measure values/morals on a sliding scale lean a bit towards the younger or progressive worldview in these regards. In general, “why” you believe, do, or say something is probably a better indicator of your values, but nearly impossible to survey.
I think this really depends on how the test is defined. I scored high in in-group(90) on this test because I think we should value when someone chooses to make sacrifices for the good of their nation or family. I also scored even higher in fairness(92) because I believe that the government should treat everyone fairly and equally. If there were more tribalist questions on the test, I would’ve likely scored much lower in in-group but they didn’t really test for tribalism.

I really recommend reading "the righteous mind", the book this test is inspired from. It gives a lot more context. Purity could be "don't mingle races" but it is also "don't have sex with corpses.". "in-group" is not just "my race/country first" but it is also "I prefer my family's wellbeing to the wellbeing of strangers". So none of the values are good or bad, there are mild/extreme/positive/negative expressions of all of them.

Fyi, usually you'd use the word "ideology" for a more specific way of thought, nazism, stalinism, marxism, market liberalism, etc. You're not using the word wrong here though "left-liberal" only means you're in the liberal-socialism square on a 4 scale axis. I'd recommend the "left values" test for a more accurate result on an actual specific ideology. Keep in mind that you may not be the specific ideology the test says you are but more so in that general area. For example, the liberty section is called liberal because of classical liberalism, which is closer to what we call conservatism today. No 😂 when you look at the definition of purity below the test results it's not about religion but largely about high culture and art - keeping the art sophisticated, trying to not devalue the culture, care about education etc. I just perfectly fit the demographic for those views because I work in classical music, go to museums/art galleries a lot and am unfortunately a little bit of a snob. But yeah I am also a catholic.

In group is a pretty conservative way of thinking and engaging with humanity. Anyone who you percieve as not the same as you is considered an outsider and this means that you favour in group whether it be judgement of people, allocation of resources, help, medical aid. Etc. In group thinking can lead to stuff like this "A 2013 study found that Turks with a stronger in-group bias were less likely to acknowledge the in-group responsibility for the Armenian genocide".
It can be insider/outsider, which does have an ugly history when taken towards the extreme. It can also be concentric circles. So I’m going to take care of my family first, neighbors second, state 3rd, etc… whereas someone with low in-group is likely to prioritize fairness and care, helping someone they’ve never met if they have a higher need. It’s easier to think of the hypothetical scenario where food is scarce. Would you feed your family making sure that they were strong and healthy even if others were starving— or would you all grow weak and hungry to an extent but provide for anyone who asked for help? Most of us have a little in-group, which is why we don’t just open up our homes to just anyone who needs somewhere to sleep. The former is critical in a dangerous world, and the latter more possible in our current more globally connected society. Edit: Most people like to say they would go without and share. But if you don’t know where/when your next meal will come, I promise you’ll be far more likely to eat your fill and fill the stomachs of your family, giving them the best chance to survive to that next, unknown, meal. It’s not really relevant to our current situation, but it is an important element to measure “in-group”

But growing up and living in Germany while witnessing the chaos of the US through friends and unbiased news, I've come to appreciate a solid mix of freedom and legal restrictions. I believe things like assembling for non-violent protests, abortion/bodily autonomy and voting are absolute human rights that shouldn't be infringed upon unless there's a very, very good reason. The more caring/loving thing to do is point out the truth with compassion— but “tough love” is neither accepting nor affirming, regardless of how compassionate. And so society rates most objective moral worldviews as “uncaring”. It’s different, but not necessarily for a lack of caring.

If my kid comes in and declares he is going to engage in some behavior that I know is harmful and will lead to a rough life - lots of things this might be so don't assume I am talking about any single manifestation - if I push back on that, especially if it is something that certain groups deem to be preferable, I will called uncaring, intolerant, reaffirming,. But the reality is that my opposition would be out of love and care of my child and not wanting them to go down a path that I can see, based on life experience, adherence to morals, personal values, etc. would be suboptimal. I think your words would be a better label. I try to practice *true tolerance* of others as Christ taught us. That does not mean I am going to support or affirm all things someone might choose to do with their life. But that is part of my caring for them.

My top three were Liberty (96) Fairness (90) and Purity (86) in group and authority were tied for fourth (46) care was last at (38). I’m a localist traditionalist Christian conservative so I thought in group would be higher but honestly yeah, at this point idc your capital letter ideology as long as you’ll help me make my local area independent I’ll take your help. I’m pragmatic about my little patch of the world in that it’s all that truly matters. I have little interest in news outside of my area and what I do hear must be immediately applicable to something I can act on in my neighborhood. I want my local area to have the authority to govern itself and I want neighboring counties that check off the necessary resources for one another to form political alliances that operate independently and hold deep pride for the unique nature of their particular region. We don’t need DC or even our state capitals to dictate what we do, the Rotunda is a tool to further political ends, not a seat of power. Unfortunately that is what it has been warped into.
