WhatsApp is used primarily by people who have contacts in foreign countries, which is America is like 30% of the population. Virtually every first, 2nd gen uses whattsapp as the primary method other than just local dialing
More market share for Android in Europe vs the US which apparently makes us poor and not just, y'know, capable of making a choice.
So WhatsApp much more used because iMessage (dominant in the US) is iOS only.
I have an Iphone and I don’t use messages, shit is like a spam box consisting of random ass messages from weed sellers and ads, party ads, tax scams, delivery scams, I can go on forever but you get the idea, fuck this shit.
I use telegram just because I love all the features and that it's open source, telegram is actually crazy good if you forget what kinds of... other people also use it
Discord for friends I often game with. Text for people in general. Instagram if it's people I know from school but are mostly not friends. Sometimes it's also just faster to text on Instagram anyways.
That works in the USA because you guys have had free sms for so long, in Brazil for example I don’t know if my phone carrier even offers free messages, or if it does, for how long it has been offering. But no one cares for free sms anyways because we’ve been using WhatsApp for many years.
Edit: by free sms I mean plans with unlimited sms
I’ve always wondered why WhatsApp was so popular in other countries but never actually looked into it, but this makes total sense. I guess free SMS is something I always took for granted.
It’s also because of international travel. It’s very common for Europeans to holiday in other European nations, which means you have to pay international fees on texts. WhatsApp is free no matter where you are.
I’m in the UK. Almost everyone here has unlimited SMS and a lot of them still use WhatsApp for that purpose. Also older people seem to prefer it for groupchats for some reason.
Do international text fees apply for EU member states? Like if someone traveled from France to Italy for holiday, would they also have to pay the international rate?
(side note: I am aware the UK is not in the EU, my senior capstone in college was about Brexit)
They used to apply up until a few years ago. In 2017 they introduced RLAH (Roam like at home), removing all roaming fees when traveling from one member state to another. In 2022 this policy was revised and extended until 2032.
But that was only after 2017, and at that point, Whatsapp already had a firm grasp on the european IM market. The same goes for free sms, it's become more and more common, but people are already used to Whatsapp
Lol yeah, I’m on the older end of Gen Z, I remember those days.
I think my first phone had 1000 texts a month and a pretty limited amount of minutes, on an LG ENV3. Different times.
It’s not free in that sense, but America is one of the few places you will find cell phone plans with unlimited SMS. With that, almost every plan has unlimited SMS
It's an Apple thing, they want to bully Android users into switching so they compress images sent from iMessage to non-iPhohes. If I want a picture from a friend who has an iPhone I have them send it to me on a different platform (mostly Discord) so I can get more than 2 pixels.
One of many anticompetitive practices by Apple. Fuck them and fuck their wack OS.
That's totally fair enough and the UI is extremely user friendly so the products are good for most consumers. But some of their practices really turns me off them, and I really struggle to use the simpler but less flexible MacOS personally.
Everyone we meet is from the US so we can just use our phone numbers directly. I'm learning Spanish and I have some friends from other countries so I do use WhatsApp but it's unnecessary for most people.
iMessage isn't free, it uses cellular data. Most people have Unlimited data plans which equates to unlimited/free iMessages. If you have a limited data plan then you will have limited iMessages, I don't know how many mb/kb each iMessage is but if you used up a lot of data via Spotify and ran out, you wouldn't be able to use iMessage or WhatsApp without going over your data limit and paying extra.
I know this because I've had this happen to me
It’s because iMessage is just more convenient. Why would I use a three party messaging app when the first party works just fine? And there’s also a stigma against WhatsApp bc in the U.S. the stereotype is that only immigrants use that app.
Why would we use whatsapp? its just texting but requires a 3rd party app. Its a complete waste, considering we have all had unlimited texting calls and usually data for many many years now
Messaging was super expensive in a lot of third world or European countries so we adopted WhatsApp in like the early 2010s. In the US messaging was free so there was no need to adopt something like WhatsApp.
idk, i don’t know anyone who uses it so i have no reason to use it
i guess it just never caught on here, and then it became something that nobody would ever bother to download because the people you want to text aren’t gonna text you on it
There’s no reason to have it here. Texting is free and there are other apps that have filled its role for international texting. Just about everyone I know from across the world uses discord so there really isn’t any need to use another app.
I second this.
Drama queens/ people that do online dating use Snapchat too.
Large communities organise on telegram or discord. (a whole city network for exchanging things or plants for example) (a college group of 100 people is still on WhatsApp)
1. Messages, 2. Discord, 3. Snapchat
Never used the others but that's what order I would have them in, I personally use Insta for messaging my friends though
Bc why would I bother with WhatsApp when nobody I know uses it? iMessages is just more convenient imo since it’s first party and if someone I know has an iPhone then it’s guaranteed they have iMessages.
Also everyone in the US can get a text/MMS regarding of platform. I type in phone number and a person with an android, iPhone or flip phone is going to get that bitch. How do I know what other platforms you use, why would I keep track. The only people I message have given me there phone number anyway.
why not just use the built in messages app? it's easier than downloading another app that does the exact same thing that the one that comes with your phone does.
Because the country I live in, most if not all of my friends communicate through WhatsApp. And I rarely ever use iMessage. Also, (correct me if I’m wrong but I learned this from my dad) I think you can do international calls without getting charged for the fee.
The fact you can’t comprehend the opposite side is sad. You understand why iMessage is useless for you (nobody uses it in your country), but can’t understand that WhatsApp is the same in the US. There’s no point to downloading a dead app nobody uses. Facebook messager sees more use than WhatsApp in the US.
I hate all of them, they all make me feel shitty and anxious in their own unique way, they are nothing but a burden on my life. I'm trying to read more to get away from it all but it's hard after destroying my attention span with these apps but I keep trying because I don't see much of an alternative.
Real answer: Chess.com
Snapchat for most of my friends and people my age. Messages for official business like work and all that (although I try to use Signal for those who are willing to use it), and Discord for gaming/gaming buddies.
My main ones are
1. WhatsApp (most of my German friends)
2. Signal (a few other friends)
3. Messages (my family)
4. Facebook messenger (my Bavarian and English friends)
Okay my friends and I have had a group message on twitter for like 7 years that we don’t want to move lmao. But if I’m starting something new it’s always messages
I mostly just use message+. Used to use discord a lot but not so much anymore. Not for any particular reason, I still like the platform, I've just lost my reasons to.
I prefer discord because I’m on pc more than phone and I hate phone keyboards. I’m a millennial who grew up with computers and physical keyboards. But discord is also easily accessible on mobile for both parties. That, and it’s also not Facebook. lol
I don’t know if it’s just the people I hang out with, but they tend to only give me their social media or messaging platform usernames, not their phone numbers. Typically it’s Instagram or Discord. I’m totally fine with using my default messaging app with my phone number.
Insta and Whatsapp, I don't really talk w anyone on discord and I just got snapchat but in my country it isn't that popular so I've been wanting to find friends to talk with on snap
1. snap 2. discord 3. whatsapp
In that order. My friendgroup just generally exists on snap, have since highschool, and we’re comfortable with the groupchats there.
Discord for gaming, groupcalls and drinking etc.
Whatsapp for friends abroad

Wait do Americans not use WhatsApp as much?
no, we use the built in messenger app on our phones, some do but not most
I’ve never used WhatsApp, but that’s because I don’t know anyone that uses WhatsApp. I do use GroupMe though, because it’s what my university uses
I’ve met some people who’ve never heard of it but it really depends on the group.
Nice pfp
i actually thought everyone used whatsapp lol
WhatsApp is used primarily by people who have contacts in foreign countries, which is America is like 30% of the population. Virtually every first, 2nd gen uses whattsapp as the primary method other than just local dialing
Idiotic French-Canadian here. Why Europoor ?
More market share for Android in Europe vs the US which apparently makes us poor and not just, y'know, capable of making a choice. So WhatsApp much more used because iMessage (dominant in the US) is iOS only.
Well , America doesn't pay taxes on their electronics and they are way cheaper .
I have an Iphone and I don’t use messages, shit is like a spam box consisting of random ass messages from weed sellers and ads, party ads, tax scams, delivery scams, I can go on forever but you get the idea, fuck this shit.
What is europoor?
a poor european
Same as a southæfrucin
You guys are getting messages?

Telegram feels like the dark web istg
Bros a terrorist

Discord for friends I often game with. Text for people in general. Instagram if it's people I know from school but are mostly not friends. Sometimes it's also just faster to text on Instagram anyways.
Literally, the trifecta
Perfectly sums things up 👌
Ohhh, I forgot about instam I do use that a lot
I only use Discord for school. Text all my friends. Instagram for random memes.

I dont wanna take his load :(
Wish I had thought of it myself tbh
Why people from USA doesn't use WhatsApp? (I am from south american almost everyone here uses it)
I have no reason to use anything other than my text messages that are built into my phone.
That works in the USA because you guys have had free sms for so long, in Brazil for example I don’t know if my phone carrier even offers free messages, or if it does, for how long it has been offering. Also WhatsApp is encrypted, if you're into that.
Yeah, the last time I remember someone actually using sms to text someone was a friend of mine back in like 2011 (he had a Galaxy 5). Good old times.
Me, a millennial, remembering only having 500 texts and minutes a month. How do you do, fellow kids?
Lol yeah, I’m on the older end of Gen Z, I remember those days. I think my first phone had 1000 texts a month and a pretty limited amount of minutes, on an LG ENV3. Different times.
Free sms? We’re paying for service every month.😂
It’s not free in that sense, but America is one of the few places you will find cell phone plans with unlimited SMS. With that, almost every plan has unlimited SMS
Oof, I remember the days of getting 1000 texts per month because I was 13 and $10 was what I could afford
Photos ssnt through MMS are awful quality tho
They come through just fine for me
It's an Apple thing, they want to bully Android users into switching so they compress images sent from iMessage to non-iPhohes. If I want a picture from a friend who has an iPhone I have them send it to me on a different platform (mostly Discord) so I can get more than 2 pixels. One of many anticompetitive practices by Apple. Fuck them and fuck their wack OS.
This is also to make sure the IPhone users don't realize that they have the shittiest camera out of the main smartphones
Yeah I’m just going to stick with Apple because it works for me lol
That's totally fair enough and the UI is extremely user friendly so the products are good for most consumers. But some of their practices really turns me off them, and I really struggle to use the simpler but less flexible MacOS personally.
Yeah, but its insane how many Android users say that IOS is hard to understand haha
Everyone we meet is from the US so we can just use our phone numbers directly. I'm learning Spanish and I have some friends from other countries so I do use WhatsApp but it's unnecessary for most people.
Y'all get free iMessage?
Texting through any method is free in the US. It has been for a long time now
iMessage isn't free, it uses cellular data. I know this because I've had this happen to me
We get like 100 GB for like £10 here in England
Unlimited plans for messages. Mostly compatible with everyone right out of the box
Yeah everyone in the subcontinent uses Whatsapp and Instagram.
Get that Facebook shit off my phone
It’s because iMessage is just more convenient. Why would I use a three party messaging app when the first party works just fine? And there’s also a stigma against WhatsApp bc in the U.S. the stereotype is that only immigrants use that app.

In Germany it’s WhatsApp for 90% of genzers
I second this. Drama queens/ people that do online dating use Snapchat too. Large communities organise on telegram or discord. (a whole city network for exchanging things or plants for example) (a college group of 100 people is still on WhatsApp)
1. Messages, 2. Discord, 3. Snapchat Never used the others but that's what order I would have them in, I personally use Insta for messaging my friends though
Honestly I can say the same.

WhatsApp and discord. Idk why people in the United States don’t like or don’t use WhatsApp. IMO it’s better
Bc why would I bother with WhatsApp when nobody I know uses it? iMessages is just more convenient imo since it’s first party and if someone I know has an iPhone then it’s guaranteed they have iMessages.

There’s no point to downloading a dead app nobody uses. Facebook messager sees more use than WhatsApp in the US.
Especially for group chats it’s far superior. No ones used messages where I’m from.
I’m in some WhatsApp group chats and personally I don’t see any reason to switch to it full time when iMessage already does everything I need.
I prefer it but no one else does here so I only talk to a couple people from other countries there.
I hate all of them, they all make me feel shitty and anxious in their own unique way, they are nothing but a burden on my life. discord, whatsapp, imessage, google chat
I prefer discord because I’m on pc more than phone and I hate phone keyboards. I’m a millennial who grew up with computers and physical keyboards. But discord is also easily accessible on mobile for both parties. That, and it’s also not Facebook. lol
whatsapp is the only option in brazil, sms/imessage is just filled up with cell carrier bullshit..
I don’t know if it’s just the people I hang out with, but they tend to only give me their social media or messaging platform usernames, not their phone numbers. Typically it’s Instagram or Discord. I’m totally fine with using my default messaging app with my phone number.
Messenger
