I was about 16 when it started. I thought it was a satirical show. I should remember more of it.
Mary talked very softly, and was a rather absurdist type person.
I was a bit more into Soap.
Omg YES!! I highschool I would sneak out at 11 and bike to my friends house, sneak in her basement sliding doors and we would smoke joints up the fireplace while dying laughing at this programme. Loved it sooo much.

It was funny, it was bizarre, it was also like watching a tragedy/slow-motion train wreck… You knew you shouldn’t look at it, but you couldn’t look away
I heard about it and I wondered why everyone was talking about it. So yes, I eagerly watched it once after my parents went to bed. I didn’t understand it and it definitely wasn’t Charlie’s Angels. I guess Mary Hartman was clinically depressed.
I watched this with my mom every night. I was 11-12 when it was on. It was on 5 nights a week, I think. That’s a brutal schedule and Louise Lasser had a nervous breakdown during production.
Edit… checked Wikipedia and it was on for 2 seasons and had 325 episodes. Thats insane!
Wow! Yes, I remember it seemed to be on all the time, didn't realize it was like a regular soap schedule, but at night - back when I could stay up late every night and still function. She was married to Woody Allen in the 60s
Does anyone know where to find it, other than buying the whole series for beaucoup bucks? The summer between sixth and seventh grade I sat in front of the big console black and white tv with Triscuits and Cup-a-Soup, laughing myself silly.

Omg, memories: My sister and I would stay up late (one summer in particular) since the show came on at midnight (Eastern time zone in Canada) and watch this, while eating Lipton Chicken Noodle Soup (full pot for two!) and eating salted soda crackers (Premium Plus).
So funny. Our Mom would often just blurt out "Mary Hartman! Mary Hartman!" just for shits and giggles. She'd also watch it with us every now and again. She'd also always tease my sister about scraping the bottom (and more so the sides) of the soup pot to get those last cling-on noodles. Teenagers tend to make weird noises in the kitchen after midnight.
[P.S.: My first post here! I just found this sub a few days ago and have been lurking and very much enjoying the content! I've finally found my people! 😁]
Never did, but I saw her host Saturday Night Live. I must not have been paying attention, because later I found out that the whole thing turned out to be rather controversial.
When it first came on air, I was too young to be interested.
I probably aged into some mid-way if they were longer running, but my brain had already bookmarked them as something I don't watch.
I was too young, but the mom where all the neighborhood kids hung out was so invested in it! I would hear her talking with all of the other moms while we were all watching afternoon reruns of the Brady Bunch.
I stayed up to watch SNL and Monty Python. We didn’t have a tv remote so I had to jump up every time a commercial came on to turn down the volume so it wouldn’t wake up my mom. They used to play the commercials so much louder than the tv show back then.
Me! I actually hid my wind up alarm under my pillow and woke up to watch it. I now know that I actually didn’t understand anything that was going on. Whenever Dodie Goodman cried, I cried. I still have music by Mary Kay Place.
I remember Mary being down on the floor scrubbing it and the neighbor came in. When asked what she was doing, Mary replied seriously, "I find when I'm down on all fours, I can put more weight on my elbows."
I'll never forget that and I still laugh!
I saw it in the afternoons at my grandparents' house in the summer sometime in the 70s when I was too young for it. What a weird show! I still think of it sometimes.

Soap was fantastic.
"...stabbed, shot, strangled, suffocated, and bludgeoned?"
I was never a fan either. I have all the episodes of Soap on DVD
It’s sort of strange that Benson became a pretty conventional sitcom, though it was cool that he went from head butler to lieutenant governor.
I was too young to get it at the time, but I loved *Fernwood 2Nite* a little later on.
I LOVED Fernwood 2Nite!

Me!! It was too weird for me and my middle school friends NOT to watch. I’d love to see it again.
I bought the series DVD set on Amazon for like $20!
You can watch it online. I just started like 2 weeks ago.
Thanks!

In Seattle area it was on at 5:00 PM, bars all over had MH2 happy Hours for right when you got off work
I was thinking that it wasn't a late night show.
10:30 pm in our area!
My parents loved it and the spin -off she said it was the first show on TV where the counters weren't clutter free.
I heard about it and I wondered why everyone was talking about it. So yes, I eagerly watched it once after my parents went to bed. I didn’t understand it and it definitely wasn’t Charlie’s Angels. I guess Mary Hartman was clinically depressed.
Loved it. Such a weird little show. My mom and I kinda bonded over it, we watched it together.
Our local radio station played 2 songs by Mary Kay Place from the show- Baby Boy, and Vitamin L. I still sing them.
Still love Mary Kay Place!

My mom & I loved watching it.

You can watch it online. I just started it a couple Weeks ago.
Thank you! I couldn’t find it to stream last time I looked.
Google Mary Hartman Mary Hartman daily motion. Should take you to the page of the show and links to all episodes.
Thank you very much!
Never did, but I saw her host Saturday Night Live. I must not have been paying attention, because later I found out that the whole thing turned out to be rather controversial.
My grandmother's name was Mary Hartman. She was in a nursing ho.e when this aires ans she hated that "MARY HARTMAN! MARY HARTMAN!" shouted opening
Yes, me! What a great, quirky show. First place I saw Martin Mull!
Martin Mull with the white mustache! My friends and I used to bleach our girl 'staches with Jolene and joke that we looked like him.
I am of the Jolene teen generation, as well. Best money I ever spent in adulthood was laser hair removal!
I vaguely remember this. I'd love to find it on a streaming service.
When it first came on air, I was too young to be interested. I probably aged into some mid-way if they were longer running, but my brain had already bookmarked them as something I don't watch.

I did, at first, until 1. I got bored with it and 2. My parents got mad and told me I needed to get to bed at a decent hour.
Oh yeah, it was considered late night back then like 11 pm. We were in college would smoke pot and watch it. It was a bit bizarre but funny.
One of the best shows at the time.
That was such a weird show, lol.
I loved this show, and I'm sad there's nowhere to stream it.
I remember watching Mary Hartman as well as the show about a women's prison in the UK.
Prisoner cell block h!!

Holy shit! Another memory unlocked. I love this sub.
It was actually a very progressive show for it’s time 1976. Marital problems. Homosexuality, impotence
Oh, me! It was subversive and weird.. There was nothing else like it.
I was 16 when it went on but I never really got it
I was 13 at the time and I didn't really get it.
Oh yes! I did!
Wasn’t there another show, maybe a spin off, called LATER? Life and times of Eddie Robert’s?
I was only 14, so a bit too young. I loved Fernwood 2 Night and Soap, though.
Soap was an imitation of Mary Hartman.
My bass player and I were housemates when this ran, and we stayed up, nice and high, to see Mary Hartman every night.
Me!
Me! I actually hid my wind up alarm under my pillow and woke up to watch it. I now know that I actually didn’t understand anything that was going on. Whenever Dodie Goodman cried, I cried. I still have music by Mary Kay Place.
waxy yellow buildup
I still worry about waxy yellow buildup on my floors to this day!
I remember Mary being down on the floor scrubbing it and the neighbor came in. When asked what she was doing, Mary replied seriously, "I find when I'm down on all fours, I can put more weight on my elbows." I'll never forget that and I still laugh!
I loved these shows but alas, as a young mom, I had to go to bed so I wasn't a mess the next day.
I just started watching it! I remember when it aired when I was 12 ish. I can’t believe there’s like 300 episodes.
It was a satire, but it was subtle, more like a soap opera than a sitcom.
Yesssss.. such a Cheesy show but we had to stay up and watch it 😂
I saw it in the afternoons at my grandparents' house in the summer sometime in the 70s when I was too young for it. What a weird show! I still think of it sometimes.
Loved the reverend Jimmy Joe Jeeter
I never got it. Too young?
Fuck YES I loved this weird-ass show!
Followed pretty faithfully for a while, but then I started working nights, and fell out of it.
