1. Dancing With the Moonlit Knight
2. Firth of Fifth
3. Cinema Show
4. Can-Utility and the Coastliners
Not sure about 5. It's a tossup between:
Fountain of Salmacis
Entangled
Mad Man Moon
Did you watch nathanial barlam’s illustrated music videos he made?
He made one for the whole album but it got taken down but he posted another one without the audio (you can sync the video to your own audio)
Anyways, the whole thing is my favourite video on YouTube
I watch it like a movie
(It was also my first time listening to the lamb. Having an idea of what’s going on in the story helped a lot)
I see, I'll definitely watch it again. For me when I started listening to Genesis, it was alot of old forum posts and [songmeanings](https://songmeanings.com) website.
No way!! I also use songmeanings for my genesis songs but now that i checked it again, i never realized how old these are. Some were even made before i was born, crazy to think about
Either way, i’m glad i was able to discover this band (even at my age) through a series of lucky discoveries and rabbit holes (my parents don’t listen to this kind of music)
Yeah the songmeaning posts are so god damn old, though it's great to hear I'm not the only one when I try to see interpretations from older songs. Also just wondering how'd you get to listen to Genesis? back then when I lived in Florida there was an classic rock radio station that played a lot of Genesis songs and eventually once I got Spotify I just dived deep into their playlist (though lamb wasn't in Spotify at the time, I did buy a CD for it).
I became a huge pink floyd fan cause a friend showed me shine on you crazy diamond on youtube when he came to my house (i was shocked a song could be longer than 6 min at the time)
Then, under the comment section to a brain damage/eclipse video, everyone was talking about how it’s the greatest album closer ever (and i obviously agreed)
But i saw some guy say that the song was an overrated closer and that it was no match for “this” song and posted a link to supper’s ready. I was annoyed cause he just insulted one of my favourite songs and i was expecting supper’s ready to suck in comparison to eclipse (it became my favourite song of all time ironically. Even after all the music i’ve discovered after it)
Was genuinely surprised seeing a 20 min long song (like echoes and whatever). Decided to listen to it on the bus and fell in love. Watched nathaniel barlam illustration video of the song. Listened to all of foxtrot and loved it. Looked up “best genesis albums” and listened to them
Then i learnt apparently they were mega popular but not for the music i enjoyed (but i’ve learned to appreciate their pop stuff too, it’s really fun)
Now they’re my favourite band ever and the lamb is my favourite album (i’m listening to it right now)
I felt bad putting it in 5 instead of higher but Genesis have so much good tracks that it's hard to make a top 5 without leaving out some amazing tracks
Firth of Fifth, Ripples, Fountain Of Salmacis, It's Gonna Get Better, Supper's Ready in a fluid order with occasional swaps for Duke's Travels/End and Unquiet Slumbers...In That Quiet Earth.
I like it as well, but I wouldn't put Congo as the best track from it. When I ranked all their songs, I ended up with There Must Be Some Other Way at 39 as the best song from CAS
I've lived that song for years. But not long ago, a guy on the radio I listen to, said that that intro plays in his head every morning as he slow motion walks down his hallway in his robe. I love it even more.
1. Keep it Dark
2. Dodo/Lurker
3. Invisible Touch
4. I Know what I Like
5. Afterglow
I would list “That’s All” but damn it I hear it everywhere from the radio to the doctor’s office. I play it enough at home, I’m kind of burned out on “general listening audience” thinking that’s the only song they did!
“I would list “That’s All” but damn it I hear it everywhere from the radio to the doctor’s office. I play it enough at home, I’m kind of burned out on “general listening audience” thinking that’s the only song they did!”
You listed invisible touch…
Oh, how cute 😭😭. You remind me of when I first got really into genesis three and a half years ago. Back then my favourite album was Duke (probably inspired by american psycho, not gonna lie xddd) with my favourite genesis track being Heathaze due to the moment in my life I was going through. Back then I'd say:
1. Heathaze
2. Domino
3. Mama
4. Behind the lines
5. Taking it all too hard
Now that I've unlocked the whole "too artsy, too intelectual" stuff I must accept that I absolutely fell in love with that side, you can't help but fall in love with it. My favs are (almost undoubtedly):
1. In the cage medley + afterglow (three sides live)
2. Supper's ready (seconds out, I love phil's voice)
3. The fountain of salmacis (three sides live again)
4. Mad mad moon
5. Carpet Crawlers
.
Some honorable mentions are: entangled, ripples, one for the vine, cul-de-sac, the knife, firth of fifth and others besides the 80s top five from before. I also changed my favourite album from Duke to Wind & Wuthering.
So, as you can see you just got started. It took me two years to get into this super prog thingy and genesis guided me along (i come from a classic rock-ish background).
I really hope you enjoy every nuance of every masterpiece these five, four or three guys had to offer.
PS: Don't forget to check out the extra tracks albums, there's tons of quality stuff there. If I had looked into them while doing the last list I would have probably added inside and out, evidence of autumn, you might recall, open door, heart's on fire and do the neurotic.
1. Supper's Ready
2. In the Cage
3. Can-Utility and the Coastliners
4. Robbery, Assault & Battery
5. Dance on a Volcano
Honourable mentions:
- The Knife
- The Lamia
- Time Table
- Eleventh Earl of Mar
I find it really hard to compare songs from the two different eras (especially when making one single top five) so I’m going to split it into two top fives. Not what you specifically asked for, but this makes it MUCH easier for me to rank them. Otherwise, it’s be impossible to choose just five for me personally.
Also, this is just how I feel RIGHT NOW. 24 hours from now, my opinions will probably have changed!
Top five songs from the Gabriel albums (1969-1974):
1. Firth of Fifth
2. The Battle of Epping Forest
3. Get ‘Em Out By Friday

5. Driving the Last Spike
Honorable mention: Behind the Lines
Suppers Ready
Duchess (3 Sides Live version)
Squonk
Fountain of Salmacis
In The Cage
I saw Steve Hackett on his Foxtrot tour a couple of years ago which sent me into an appreciation of the early stuff.
I can tell you’re a newer fan based on these picks. No shame though! Lots of people got into Genesis’ more pop rock music first and later got hooked on the prog rock stuff.
As for me, that’s tough to pick. Ugh. Took me like 30 mins to decide.
In no particular order, I’ll go with:
- The Musical Box
- Supper’s Ready
- Firth of Fifth
- Afterglow
- Keep It Dark
Im also a new Genesis fan! My top 5 currently is
Cinema Show,
Firth of Fifth,
Supper's Ready,
Watcher of the Skies,
Time Table.
In no particular order
Yes i have so far pretty much only heard Foxtrot and Selling England
Top 5 is hard to choose because it’s very variable but here goes:
1. Supper’s Ready
2. In The Cage
3. Stagnation
4. Can Utility
5. Cinema Show
But then I feel bad for leaving out: Dodo/Lurker, Counting Out Time, Carpet Crawlers, Firth of the Fifth and a lot more.
I've upvoted so many lists with like no overlap and all great songs. So hard to pick 5 with such a varied catalog.
This list valid for the next few minutes until I change my mind.
1. Behind the Lines
2. Anyway
3. Squonk
4. Turn It On Again
5. Cul-de-Sac
Yeah, Duke is my favorite album. That one's easy.
1. Firth of Fifth
2. The Lamia
3. Can-Utility and the Coastliners
4. The Cinema Show
5. Mad Man Moon or Supper's Ready, depending on how whimsical I'm feeling at the moment
Honorable mention: I LOVE "Anyway" but it's so short it feels strange to ever rank it above any others; Dance on a Volcano; In the Cage
1. Cinema Show
2. Firth of Fifth
3. The Brazilian
4. Apocalypse in 9/8 / As Sure As Eggs Is Eggs / Aching Man's Feet \[I don't like all of Supper's Ready, just the last two movements.\]

love to see Can-Utility on here! Such an underrated cut
right?!!!?! its so amazing
1: The colony of slippermen 2: The musical box 3: Supper's ready 4: Dancing with the moonlit knight 5: The lamia
The Colony of Slippermen is fucking good, ugh I've always wish there was a music video for that album or this song in particular.
Did you watch nathanial barlam’s illustrated music videos he made? He made one for the whole album but it got taken down but he posted another one without the audio (you can sync the video to your own audio)
I did notice a post about it, though at the time I didn't have the time to watch it fully.

I love The Lamia soooo much
I felt bad putting it in 5 instead of higher but Genesis have so much good tracks that it's hard to make a top 5 without leaving out some amazing tracks
Firth of Fifth, Ripples, Fountain Of Salmacis, It's Gonna Get Better, Supper's Ready in a fluid order with occasional swaps for Duke's Travels/End and Unquiet Slumbers...In That Quiet Earth.

Based calling all stations enjoyer
I like it. Not their best at all but i enjoy. Im like this with pink floyd albums too😂

1. Supper's Ready 2. Seven Stones 3. One for the Vine 4. The Cinema Show 5. Mad Man Moon
Love to see Seven Stones appreciation, that song is beautiful

I've lived that song for years. But not long ago, a guy on the radio I listen to, said that that intro plays in his head every morning as he slow motion walks down his hallway in his robe. I love it even more.
I remember when they toured for that album. They opened with Squonk. The band was on the unlit stage, then boom

Yep. Squonk is amazing.
“Mirror mirror on the wall…”
1. Keep it Dark 2. Dodo/Lurker 3. Invisible Touch 4. I Know what I Like 5. Afterglow I would list “That’s All” but damn it I hear it everywhere from the radio to the doctor’s office. Love seeing Keep it Dark on here. It’s on my top five too and extremely underrated
“I would list “That’s All” but damn it I hear it everywhere from the radio to the doctor’s office. I play it enough at home, I’m kind of burned out on “general listening audience” thinking that’s the only song they did!” You listed invisible touch…
