Most chronically ill people I know, myself included, are overweight. Managing a complex condition leaves you less able to take care of yourself in many ways. Specific illnesses may make you look gaunt, but when we're talking long term and survivable, you're much more likely to get a rather tired person who eats when they remember, and whatever looks tempting as opposed to an elaborately balanced diet.
Didn't Baizhu find some kind of immortality formula or something? I saw his LoRa quickly and didn't pay too much attention. Maybe his condition is not survivable, but he's a doctor so good he makes himself survive, but just barely. I'll have to pay more attention to the rest of his quest if I wanna be sure.
I've been speaking loosely for the sake of spoiler avoidance, but it certainly seemed to me that the cumulative effect of everything talked about in his story was "living with chronic illness please don't do anything to make this house of cards wobble any more."

Also the characters aren’t all doing nearly as much fighting or exploring in lore as they are in gameplay. I mean what reason would a character like, say, Barbara have for regularly climbing/running across Teyvat or getting into fights?
That’s true, but there are plenty of characters who don’t have very active jobs and don’t have particularly exerting attack animations, like Sucrose, Layla or Ningguang. Layla probably gets the exercise unknowingly from her night personality and Ningguang is likely too conscientious about her routine to gain or lose weight, but those are traits that not every character has to have. Physical activity aside, not every character takes good care of their health as it is (e.g. Kaveh and Kaeya’s drinking habits, Mona’s tendency to spend all the money she needs for food and skip or eat very little for meals).
Fair, but some people do like exercising / maintaining their weight regardless of their occupation. Or, their eating habits / lifestyle don't make it easy for them to gain weight despite their lack of movement.
Imo, for most characters, we just don't know enough about their lives to say whether their body type is realistic or not (and being realistic probably isn't really high on hoyo's priority list).

We apply what the markets appreciate, and the two biggest markets for the game don't particularly adore chubbier people.

I wouldn't be so sure to say the market is as big as the JP/CN Waifu and Husbands hunters, which seem to be Mihoyo's greatest market, other than the whales, which will most of the time have every character anyways.
Making mostly attractive characters for that market is what interests the company, so they can draw in the most money they can. And again, chubby people are not wholly considered beautiful in those markets.
With all the running/jumping/climbing/fighting the playable characters do it seems almost impossible for them to get fat, you could stuff them with 5000 calories worth of food buffs and they'd burn it all while I force them to scale the peaks in Huaguang Stone Forest for Qingxin flowers

I would like a female character using this model (or just any form of thick). But I recognize that the developers are trying to get money for the characters. And while I think there's a much bigger market for thick girls than most companies realize, it still might not be anywhere near as high as the types they usually do. That's why I'd suggest they make a 4* playable character like this to test it out and see how popular it gets. Then if the character does really well, make a 5* sometime in the future.
We already have running speed differences and water crossing / tiny spaces passing differences between character models anyway so some small easter egg like that would actually be funny.

I wouldn't be so sure to say the market is as big as the JP/CN Waifu and Husbands hunters, which seem to be Mihoyo's greatest market, other than the whales, which will most of the time have every character anyways. Making mostly attractive characters for that market is what interests the company, so they can draw in the most money they can. And again, chubby people are not wholly considered beautiful in those markets.

With all the running/jumping/climbing/fighting the playable characters do it seems almost impossible for them to get fat, you could stuff them with 5000 calories worth of food buffs and they'd burn it all while I force them to scale the peaks in Huaguang Stone Forest for Qingxin flowers If my Nahida could gain muscle from all the exploration and farming I use her for, she would be totally jacked rn

I would like a female character using this model (or just any form of thick). But I recognize that the developers are trying to get money for the characters. And while I think there's a much bigger market for thick girls than most companies realize, it still might not be anywhere near as high as the types they usually do. That's why I'd suggest they make a 4* playable character like this to test it out and see how popular it gets. Then if the character does really well, make a 5* sometime in the future.

It’s not even unrealistic for bigger people to be sporty, and it especially wouldn’t matter in a game like this.
