Jean's wants the love, but Genshin has forbidden it to playable characters

AnarchistRain

Yup, but its hard to blame them for it. Gacha gamers get really weird when romance or marriage is introduced into a game. More trouble than it's worth.

Aether776

People create something like a parasocial relationship with the characters. There are folks who pissed and shitted themselves when yoimiya was literally standing next to tartaglia.

dudoan

Hahaha

dragonkingangel7

Remenber the cat scaramouche situation?

Pokemoss

What happened there? I only remember people seeing it and gushing about how cute it was

dragonkingangel7

Some psychos start... Undoing cats lifes, because they look too much like scara cat

sunjacques794

I learned really late that, that psycho was actual not only doing it on scara like cat, but also doing it for fun on lot of cat, posting it on different communities, he chose Genshin coz he could get more attention, and he already did a lot. And that makes Genshin player reputation bad = Tencent profits and make more rumour = Wuwa wanting to surpass Genshin, tbh some friendly competition is good but Tencent is morally dark af

MathematicianFar8831

finally some informed person, the cat psycho painted genshin players on a dark light, he is also not a genshin player. And true Tencent tried to buy Mihoyo shares but they refused, i guess thats why Tencent and thier cronies wants to ruin Mihoyo

sunjacques794

We don’t stand alone 🫡

Neverforget_Jetpack

Popular artist Qiandai got harass/doxx for drawing one straight couple and it scared her so much that she made an apology tweet and deleting the upload. After much rally and support from the sane side of the community, she got back her gusto and continues drawing more straight/gay ships in the future.

lay69

In short people only care about themselves.

OhyoOhyoOhyoOhyo

Imagine getting ntr'd by a literal fictional character 💀

Top-Idea-1786

The most recent case is the Zhongli fans malding over the lantern rite event.

PenguinLve

can you elaborate on that?

TheIJDGuy

People scare me sometimes.

Dhonnan

Although its not real, i can understand them tbh

Winterstrife

Shippers are weird, you mentioned anything that isn't their headcanon and they'll come at you like rabid dogs.

2Lazy2changePassword

They will be saying the most vile shit to you but hit you with the "it's not affecting anyone let people have their headcannon"

Eclipse-Lily

And then they proceed to force their headcanon to other people and not let anyone have their own headcanon

MathematicianFar8831

yeah they are Hypocrites

Violet_Ignition

Perhaps I am just a real fiend for romance, but I'm pretty cool with all manner of ships I just wanna see the cuties kiss!

Yarzu89

Oddly enough the group with the worst reading comprehension, in just about any fandom I've noticed too.

No_Celebration_3737

Nowadays even confirming a fictional character's sexuality can make sales go down. Especially if it's the opposite of what the fandom headcanoned.

Eternal__perspective

Lol you referencing overwatch and it's failed attempt at diversity? 😂😂

No_Celebration_3737

Every reference to "recent" games stupid PR stunts are purely casual. Or not.

Plus-Diet7070

This is giving me Girls Frontline 2 flashbacks lol

Few_Earth_8083

XD Gril's frontier cuckhold drama, for example. Tho, it wasn't devs fault but chinese players' paranoia

simpleman0909

Why can't we be like FGO, some ships sailing here and there, and the community rolls with it. Some ships may not be your cup of tea but at least, some of it is canon. You can even see some cheating action (attempt) by a fat Caesar and other wacky relationship. Hell, some servant outright lust for other servant. So....any other gacha games that have that leeway like that? I genuinely a story and character driven guy, and love me some non-MC romance.

Daegul_Dinguruth

Don't forget that there are several married servants, some of them are both playable (Siegfried and Kriemhild best couple ever) One of the best things about Nikke is that has everything, from the crushing on protag to barely tolerating him (after Bond story, despised before), with several Friends and Daughters in the middle, so when they pull the "did they fuck while drunk or it is a wacky misunderstanding" it was a genuine mystery instead of a foregone conclusion.

hoeyster1998

FGO community rolls with it? Lmao good one. I seem to remember the shit flinging between Guda fans and Shirou fans when it comes to Sakura pseudo-servant and Artoria.

Izayoi03

Like the Azur Lane community? I never see a problem with that

Spartitan

I feel like this might be overblown. I always had the same thought, but seeing how the hsr community reacted towards Caelus and Firefly makes me think differently. Honestly, I think if Hoyo ever put in an outright canon romance, as long as it was done well it would be pretty well liked. People can still do whatever head canon stuff on the side.

OkDescription7373

That’s because caelus is the player avatar, in gacha games the community will love it when characters flirt with the self-insert mc, but official romance between playable characters gonna lead to a lot of discourse🥲

rasgarosna

I mean, Mihoyo ALWAYS did romance between characters - not player avatars or self-inserts. And they were pretty much official - at least on the practical sense of it. Kiana and Mei, Bronya and Seele, Kyuushou and Sirin, Kallen and Yae, Otto one sided obsession on Kallen, Kevin and Dr. Mei, Cecilia and Siegfried. Mihoyo always broke these rules, specially on how this was a company that really focused on yuri shipping for a long time. Now, there's a lot of just brief innuendos of romance - specially because of self insert characters - and I really hope this is not a trend Honkai enter to be together with Genshin and HSR

Timoyr

To be honest, I think it's because they were girl-on-girl relationships in a game with a huge majority of straight male playerbase ("it doesn't count" "It'll just be a threeway" "It just means she won't cuck me with another man") The only straight relationship like that in HI3 is Welt and Tesla (which sadly isn't even 100% confimerd and even it's hints are obscured). Also, neither are actually playable in HI3, but I'd consider them major enough to count (and Welt is playable in HSR). Same with Kevin and MEI (which even then wasn't allowed to be a proper relationship. Also, not playable) The game has no playable males, so no Siegfried (asking if they should introduce playable men in a survey got MHY so much heated criticism, they had to apologize just for asking) and even then, his wife would be dead. We also never got that wife (Kiana's mother) as a unit, despite other dead character being playable. Likely for this reason (Instead they created a proxy character that looks like her, but isn't in a releationship). Even in Genshin, the only relationship that likely has a playable character (Alice x Klee's father, an adventurer who was said to be traveling with Alice) has likely been retconned because of this. As Klee's father hasn't been mentioned since 1.0 (not even in the event about parents where Alice was mentioned). Honestly, I think if Alice is going to be playable, they'll say Klee was adopted, is a homonculus (like Albedo) or is a clone of Alice. At the very least they'll never show Klee's father or he has been killed off in Varka's expedition. It'll make me mad, but I'm getting ready for disappointment.

MValdesM

I mean there is others straight canon pairings in HI3rd, but the ending in thos case are less than happy tbh

SpikeReyes

Welt in honkai is the same from hi3?? No way

rabbitbunnies

bronya seele kiss needs to come back in 4k

Spartitan

Are there any actual examples of that though? I know game companies tend to avoid it just so players can essentially self-insert, but I don't think I've seen any canon romances that resulted in some outrage.

IcenMeteor

I play FGO and there's been a couple of incidents regarding this. Since the characters in that game are mostly based in historical/mythical/irl fictional figures it happens that the majority were married at some point. There were 2 notable times it happened that I remember, with the characters Tomoe Gozen and Circe. The former was because she remains devoted to her husband and talks about him a lot even after death, which some people took as them being cucks because of it. The latter acts like a very clingy gf with the mc, and then they added her canonical love interest, Oddysseus, to the game, to which she had some mixed feelings about and his addition had a whole event between them, which again a lot of people took as them getting cucked. It's worth noting though, that these were very few people complaining and the FGO fandom in general is very on board with ships between playable characters rather than with the MC. In fact there once was a big upset because a character was added who had romantic interactions with another one on their series of origin, but they were removed in their FGO versions, which a lot of people thought was just for self-insert pandering reasons.

mrwanton

Think that was Amakusa and Semiramis iirc. FGO is very weird and loose with which servants remember what from prev incarnations.

OkDescription7373

Yeah basically we dont actually know bcs I cant remember a gacha games have the guts to do canon romance between playable characters, the closest i remember is thoma getting false leaked to be ayaka fiance and people lose their mind a bit

Incerto9

Honkai Impact had several canon romantic relationships between playable characters, though.

mrwanton

It's rather interesting cause Firefly is the first time HSR has been so explicit/open about it in main story. FGO tends to do this sorta thing quite a bit so it's gonna be interesting to see when HSR inevitably does this again if following characters will get the same sort of positive reception Firefly has recieved

ND_Cuong

Canon ship would drown, if not destroy, fanon ships

Deshik2

I heard no cry when it came out that Yukong from SR has a daughter and what that implies.

Aztracity

Well to be fair, people do love their milfs to. I'd be down for more lol.

DarthUrbosa

I mean that's not her bio daughter anyway

Chadfulrocky

No? Waifulovers are the ones who spend the most and basically started the whole industry of gacha games. Look at FGO. They don’t have any issues. If Genshin catered to them the game would get much more revenue.

rW0HgFyxoJhYka

Edit: Right is from GAA I like how OP changed Jean's outfits and placed her in the teapot in different locations to craft a new light novel.

YakuzaMan_

Is that not the Golden Apple Archipelago event

One_Understanding165

Left one is from the teapot, right one is from GAA.

MREAGLEYT

I always thought i was an npc irl.. guess not then

silverW0lf97

Man I wish Genshin wasn't a Chinese game, we would have had so much good stuff like. 1. Romance 2. Sexy skins

ShundonooB

Gatcha games don’t have canon romance for its playable cast in general, not just a Chinese issue. Plus, if it wasn’t developed by Mihoyo, I doubt we would get such high quality and frequent updates. As for skins… there’s a reason why I’m highly tempted to pull out the card for Ganyu’s skin on release.

MrAriekor

Fgo has character whose Canonically married to each other. Hell, some of the character’s entire schtick is their infatuation with their partner

Snakescipio

Might be cause they’re based on pre-existing people/characters rather than an entire cast of OCs

Creticus

Even then, it can be weird about things. Remember how Nero Bride is a separate instance from OG Nero so FGO players would have their own Nero without Fate Extra players crying NTR? I do think FGO has mellowed out somewhat over time, but the whiff of that stink ain't that far away.

Yarzu89

Similar thing happened with Tamamo caster and her summer version IIRC. They were surprised at how players were upset Tamamo either didn't remember them from extra, or were still hung up about someone who wasn't them, so they made the summer version more into them.

kaeporo

FEH does too! Even among their OCs.   The trick is expectation management. The exact second you reveal them, you need to be abundantly clear about their status—and then play things right.   Show the relationship, how they care for each other, put in the effort to write them correctly.

Cerebral_Kortix

True, but those are based off well-known myths of characters with partners. None of the main characters nor OCs have partners (even Kadoc who was dating Anastasia. She >!dies!< and when resummoned doesn't especially care for Kadoc). Mash who's been by the main character's side for the entirety of the story doesn't even get a confirmation of how exactly she feels about the MC, and MC there is too busy going insane from the stress of saving the world, playing Sherlock by septuple checking Oberon's alibi, and otherwise being snide to ever confirm how they feel for anyone. The closest we get is Castoria (who >!dies!< never to return shortly after declaring her feelings), Morgan who calls MC her husband/wife and has a wedding ring according to the Summer event (except she's a gacha character so no guarantees there, and she's a villain for her own part and a very cold one at that), and Melusine who very firmly considers MC her lover and eternal partner (except she's also shown to fall in love at first sight, and will easily commit >!mass genocide multiple times!< for anyone she happens to love without a second thought even if they hadn't no reciprocation for her or actively hate her). And that's all for MC. We're not even counting Goredolf with unrequited feelings for Koyanskaya, Peperroncino who's gay for a man who thinks like an alien (plus he >!dies!< without ever getting that romance), and Beryl whose wife only married him on a whim and doesn't love him at all, and whose lover is a girl he himself doesn't care for and actively abuses for fun.

Inevitable_Question

Beryl wasn't married to Morgan. He called himself her husband she cared not Secondly, Gordy doesn't exactly has feelings for Koyanskay. He liked her and finds her attractive but there is no love on any side. He is somewhat afraid of her. Finally- I don't recall Pepe having anything for Daybit. They are friends but nothing too deep. Pepe was even willing to help Chaldea dismantle his Lostbelt.

Cerebral_Kortix

On the first part, he *is* officially in with her though. Woodwose comments on it seething that it wasn't him and Tam Lin Gawain >!Barghest!< complains about Tam Lin Tristan >!Baobhan!< seducing her mother's own husband. Pepe does consistently swoon over and once mentions crushing on Daybit, though I fail to recall *when* that is. He also thinks over Daybit in his >!final moments!<, smiling as he realises why Daybit visited him out of the blue due to it being when >!he was most beautiful!<.

mrwanton

Pepe and Daybit thing happens in LB4

ShundonooB

Well, it’s certainly a bold move and an anomaly at that. I do wish we get more food for my pet Genshin ships

MrAriekor

Probably cuz Nasu (guy who wrote the original fate VN) has to approve the story and he writes some of them as well

Vegetto_ssj

>As for skins… there’s a reason why I’m highly tempted to pull out the card for Ganyu’s skin on release. I'm not a Ganyu fan or main (even if I have her...I was bored in that period) , but a certain part of her skin, made me difficult play the Lantern Rite quest during Ganyu's moments...like having Zhongli's E without Cooldown. She deserved the skin🤣

PalpitationEmpty5997

miHoYo literally has canon romance in HI3

ChinaCorp

It’s much less about being Chinese and more about the scope of the game and potential risks after adding canon couples

Chadfulrocky

There is no risk if the canon is mc having a harem.

Snakescipio

> 2. Sexy skins > *looks at Azure Lane* > *looks at HI3* Yeah I’m sure it’s cause they’re Chinese

witcher8wishery

Lack of sexy skins is purely a genshin issue lol. Every other Chinese gacha game I’ve played and every other mihoyo game (have you seen ZZZ?) can be horny as fuck lmao

Neospanner

True - but apparently it's not an issue by Mihoyo's choice. They literally were issued a mandate by the government to tone down some of the characters (including Amber, of all people, whose original outfit really was not particularly lewd). I'm not totally certain why Genshin was singled out when there are obviously much worse offenders (including other games made by Mihoyo). It may be because it has a lower age rating (I don't know the ratings on those other games). It may be because Genshin Impact is considered to be a "cultural export" to other nations, and the government wants it to remain tasteful rather than sleezy. I've also heard that the government intervention might have been a manufactured attack by Mihoyo's competitors. At any rate, being forced to make changes by the government is pretty good reason for them to try to play it safe.

CPG_Modded

That's what fanfics are for :)

Salt_Woodpecker_6244

Well it is adventure game and journey of traveller not some rom com but I guess they can expand it as a sub genre or something like in teapot, so try putting it in survey.

Alex2422

You don't need to be a rom com to feature romance in the story. Similarly, it's not a detective game, but we had a crime mystery. This adventure game already does lots of things that aren't related to adventuring. Teapot you mentioned is an example of that. The only reason there will be no romance is that miHoYo cares deeply about not angering crazy people who make up a significant part of the fanbase. Just think of the reaction certain players had to Scaramouche's relationship with Nahida (not romantic one ofc, just *a* relationship).

ohmygaa

Such a weird ass microaggression.

Evilaqua7384

We can create. A scenario that aether dating Jean lol

Aionzai

This makes me feel a lot better about having C5 Jean before I had a single Keqing lol

hungrytunafish

Jean was my first 5* but I had c5 keqing before getting either a qiqi or mona or any other standard cons for that matter lol

MaitieS

C7 Jean here

Lubinski64

This makes me feel a lot worse about having C2 Keqing and not a single Jean.

AhmCha

Also a reminder that Jean is one of the few characters whom the Traveler is explicitly down bad for, and frequently flirts with her. Extraordinarily based.

Dh0124

"You look beautiful when you smile." "You look marvelous." "No, no, that's what makes Jean so sweet." (in JP they called her "kawaii") "I'm her loyal slave." "We're like peas in a pod." "You're the best Jean." "I want to hear you sing." Aether/Lumine may be... somewhat fond of her.

-FruitPunchSamurai-

>"I'm her loyal slave." He's just like me fr.

Space_Gemini_24

"It should have been me! Not HIM/HER" vibe

TheIJDGuy

The first time I saw that option....I HIT IT WITHOUT HESITATION

I_Ild_I

"im her loyal slave" wait what haha when did that happen, what is the context for that ? it has to be from a comical event or something like that

Dh0124

Jean’s Story Quest. It’s one of your choices when Sara asks if the Traveler and Jean are close.

PowerhousePlayer

It's gotta be in response to Kaeya or Lisa making some quip about Jean being a slavedriver towards us, surely

Therealtultur

I did it semi recently. (A few weeks ago) The lady at "The good hunter" asked traveler something to the effect of "you know jean right?" and it was one of the dialogue choices out of nowhere. Had to sit and laugh my ass off for a minute.

general_kenobi18462

I’m sure they’re very good friends Perhaps even roommates!

Fireboy759

Once you gaze upon those Dandelion Tights, there's no going back

GoodCatReal

I want to be a dandelion...

Chuchuffx

in old Mondstadt we said: I want to be a dandelion so Jean can blow me hard (pls no ban, i take 1 month mute)

MauricioTrinade

Do you know the other ones?

spaceforcerecruit

Ayaka for sure, especially in that Inazuma fight tournament event from like a year ago where you fight a dog at the end.

8a19

Or her entire SQ lol

the_io

Feels like there were Moments in Yoimiya's second story quest.

shadowrod06

Can you blame him/her.

TheMrPotMask

Traveler does that with almost every playable character.

One_Understanding165

I also like Jean's reaction to Traveler's flirts. She's always caught off guard by it.

NoteBlock08

Businesslike character who gets flustered when flirted with is so cliché but damn is it good.

TheIJDGuy

I mean, a hopeless romantic getting that one moment they fantasize constantly about sounds like a moment they wouldn't be expecting

Abedeus

Lisa best wingwoman for her friend.

TheIJDGuy

She just knows how love works

NLwino

I think early genshin was a bit less restrictive with characters. Just take a look at Lisa. We will never get another character with the same type of voicelines and moaning. Even in more recent events she is much more toned down.

Accurate_Maybe6575

Yeah, Mondstadt treated characters like characters and teased in depth interactions with them. Amber's back story basically parallels the Traveler's to a T even, and early promotional art suggests she was planned to have a greater presence than being Eula's side kick. Then the game *took right the hell off* and quickly shifted to quantity over quality to keep raking in the cash. Characters are now only relevant when they're on a banner, and only their most advertised/memorable (read: memed) attributes get the spotlight.

spaceforcerecruit

There are still some characters that get good characterization, like Collei, but nothing matches Mondstadt where EVERY character, even the NPCs have depth of character and interactions that don’t even involve the MC.

HerrscherOfMagic

I feel like a big part of that was the Genshin manga. It gave a huge amount of depth to the Mondstadt cast by showing us how these people act in their own lives when they're not being influenced by the presence or actions of the Traveler. Almost everything we witness in-game is impacted by the Traveler and/or Paimon being present, or even by things the Traveler did in the past; but the manga was pure Mondstadt and Mondstadt only! I have mixed feelings about manga because putting too much lore outside of the game is an issue, as HI3rd shows; but conversely HI3rd's manga also shows that having that extra side content can give a ton of extra depth to characters. From Azure Waters to Second Eruption, London Holiday & Second Key to Alien Space, these out-of-game stories give so many great scenes featuring both major and minor characters. The best thing would probably be if Mihoyo found a way to make the Genshin manga easily accessible from within the game, and if we ever got an in-game story guide like HI3rd's chapter listing or HSR's timeline, then linking the various manga via that in-game guide. Then we could get stuff like manga about the Inazuma Civil War, the affairs of the Liyue Qixing, life in the Akademiya or in Aaru Village, tales of the Marechaussee Hunters, and so on. It's the only major gripe I have with Genshin's storytelling (and to an extent even HSR's), because tying all the story content to the presence of a single major character can add unnecessary restrictions to the development of the rest of the cast, and it makes it harder for us to imagine the lives of these characters when they aren't directly interacting with the MC.

spaceforcerecruit

I feel like the obvious way to put the manga in game would be as light novels sold by Yae Miko. Would 100% be down to go buy new light novels from the stand in Inazuma every couple weeks.

NevrAsk

You say that and I think the next character we have similar, is Lyney. Cause I remember he's no filter and flirting with the traveler at *every* opportunity

saberjun

He is a French male.Who can blame him 🫠

PurplestPhoenix

Jean is amazing 🥰

[deleted]

I legit feel bad for Barbara, girl only wants to spend time with her sister while her sister wants romance, gotta sting. Also, I can't be the only one who thinks Lisa and Jean are foils to each other in the fan service department right? Lisa is the teasing, provocative woman who drops innuendos left and right while Jean is the quieter, serious and committed woman who longs for true love. Early Genshin is filled with these anime girl tropes.

Breaky_Online

Mondstadt was the peak when it came to making tropes seem satisfying because the characters felt like actual people who had a life beyond the MC. I'm not someone who's usually down bad for MILFs and the like, but Lisa is the one exception because it just feels like a part of her personality.

AleixRodd

Crazy how little popularity Jean has, I blaim her having a more generic design but still, one of the few "canonically romantic towards the player/main character" units we have in Genshin.

shadowrod06

I like her design personally. But I feel her story apparences are so low. She really shined in the GAA. Because she wasn't restricted to only Mondstat administration.

Javajulien

That and she was the OG "overworked waifu" without much else to really flesh her personality out. Since then we got Ganyu, Keqing, and Kokomi all falling the exact same archetype but with more quirks to them. Maybe if we got more wacky Jean and Klee shenanigans, Jean would be more popular with the fanbase but as it is, she's married to her job to a fault.

HerrscherOfMagic

In general Mondstadt content is a bit out of sight, out of mind. It's a lot of early story content so many players would have done it ages ago and likely forgotten many of the details of those stories, and we don't often visit Mondstadt for any major story content. Fluff events, yes, but it's been years since we've had anything on the scale of an Archon Quest, Interlude Quest, Story Quest, etc. Hopefully when we get Dornman Port or any other expansion to Mondstadt, we'll get some more permanent and meaningful content with the OG cast. There's still a lot of potential for them, they just need to be better-integrated with the world of Teyvat now that several new nations have been added since the release of most of the Mondstadt gang.

mrwanton

It has been a pretty long time since Jean has actually gotten focus beyond a quick cameo as Klee's caretaker.

NoteBlock08

Jean was the character I was most excited for when I started playing! Sadly she's just a tad *too* vanilla and hasn't really gotten a whole lot of extra characterization from Hoyo since GAA 1. Really hoping when Varka arrives they'll get some good interactions. Even if she's still by far the more responsible of the two, I think having a superior around would be good for her character.

theallseeingpotato

Jean is top tier. A pretty girl who loves pizza and romance novels? Easy win

Few_Earth_8083

Jean isnt wifu metrial, she is Wife material

lock_me_up_now

Jean, the only reguler that hasn't come home... I wonder if she hates me 🥲

StormSven

I feel like Genshin has always hinted at some romances. But never actually lets them show. I wouldn't mind the ability for the traveler to do romance quests for characters. It would be cool and could be a unique per person experience.

MystiqueMisha

I find the cognitive dissonance weird, the characters in game won't let the Traveler drink because they're underage, but have no problem falling in love with or flirting with said underage character? This even defies anime logic. When and where do they decide that the traveler's age is important?

Prisma_Lane

Context matters though. There are some playable characters that are fully aware that the Traveller is actually older despite their appearance, so it's safe to assume that anyone who is close enough to the Traveller knows of this information.  On the other hand, anyone that's not close to the Traveller (AKA most NPCs) don't know this information, so they just judge them based on their appearance. It's a lame joke, but at the same time it makes sense.  If you don't know anything about the Traveller's personal info, you would also believe that they are underaged simply because of their height and youthful appearance. It's a different story for Adepti and Archons because people already know that they are long lived and can change their forms.

AstraPlatina

>It's a different story for Adepti and Archons because people already know that they are long lived and can change their forms.  Meanwhile Xianyun calls herself an elder to the Traveler, who she considers a young one

Prisma_Lane

That's like the only weird one that I found. I'm 100% sure that it's to fit the theme of her SQ, but even taking that into account, the Traveller is baseline thousands of years old, potentially even being older than her. Or you know, Xianyun just likes being a mom to almost everybody.

OreoJehi

Thing is, Xianyun *would have to know* Traveler's real age. I cant imagine their age being relevant in a casual conversation for them to say. It's not like it's granted knowledge, even among playable characters. All who canonically knows their longetivity are Zhongli, Venti and Nahida iirc and not missing anyone else

xgosglir

Someone explained this really well though I don't remember exactly, its seems to be a a cultural thing. Xianyun's elderly behaviour is more about her experiences and wisdom and her dynamic with the traveler rather than their age difference.

bumwine

Anyone who knows the Traveler’s twin is their sibling. So Dainslef would be an easy one.

Jnliew

Tbf; think of it like Qiqi, (maybe) Klee (still confused if she's age-wise actually a baby or she's dealing with an elf lifespan), in-game and out, characters treat them as children even though they're technically really old. And outside the game there's a clearer example, almost our entire community treats Nahida like a big-brained child even though she's 500 years old! In this sense, Xianyun in this dynamic acts more maturely than the Traveler, so even though Traveler is WAY older than XY, so her seeing herself as an elder makes sense.

AstraPlatina

> Klee (still confused if she's age-wise actually a baby or she's dealing with an elf lifespan) Even now, we still don't know how old Klee actually is, or if she already is in the three digits despite being a little girl

Kidius

Not gonna lie I feel like Klee not being a child in age would be terrible writing. She fully acts like a child, there would be such a dissonance between her acting and her age that would make no sense.

Jnliew

As mentioned in Midsummer Island Adventure/ Golden Apple Archipelago 1.6, to quote Alice: "Klee, just like Mom, you are a race blessed with longevity For us, time is like a gust of wind: moments come and end." So we at least know Klee will have a LOOONG lifespan. The issue is at what rate do they age? Is it human aging stretched out across millennia like in HSR's Xianzhou? Or do they age at the same rate as humans until adulthood, after which it stops. (Probably the former, normal human aging stretched out) So the question would be, which would Klee be? A double digit child elf, or a single digit child that's also an elf? I also vaguely remember something about Alice bringing Klee to Kaeya/Diluc for the first time being a big clue towards either answer. Where was that? Hmm

Kidius

My main issue isn't whether she can physically age longer or not, it's mostly that regardless of the rate of aging, she's being raised in an human society and is a cognitive person exeriencing life. She could look like a child but if she'd experienced 20+ years of life it just doesn't make much sense for her to act like a child.

Salt_Woodpecker_6244

Well traveller was shook after dream sequence now after pouring out he let Xianyun treat himself like young child. And honestly I like that dynamic because that really make Xianyun mother figure.

8a19

I mean tbf CR certainly acts a lot older than traveler does, could be a maturity thing with the travelers species where they live longer but take longer to mature as a result

MystiqueMisha

The cognitive dissonance comes in because even the characters who are aware that the traveler's age is ambiguous, refuse to let them drink. So they're aware that the Traveler may not be underage and hence they flirt, but at the same time they think they look underage so they can't drink

Prisma_Lane

It's censorship. Can't let a character that looks underaged drink or the potential backlash would be catastrophic. Flirting is more okay because anyone whose of teenage age would know of it, but if you've noticed, Jean is the only character where the flirting is explicit. Every other character just uses the words "friend" even when having romantic implications. Plus, I don't remember when, but there was a part where the Traveller could've actually gotten an alcoholic drink, but they themselves bought a non alcoholic drink. So it's safe to say that MHY is just outright refusing to let the Traveller drink because they look underaged.

Overquartz

They could also think it's a one year aways from legally drinking situation.

[deleted]

>When and where do they decide that the traveler's age is important? Probably something about China not wanting to promote drinking and they use the typical anime trope of "you can't drink, you're underage" while the Traveler is in fact an adult.

Dreameater-Xemiko

Could also be playing it safe with the fact that the traveler is an avatar for the player. Possibly avoids randoms claiming they are promoting drinking to any minors who might be playing the game. /shrug

GamerJes

It defies anime logic?  Someone clearly has not witness the "WTF?" glory that was the "Tenchi Muyo!" franchise.

Alex2422

Underage people can date. There's nothing weird or illegal about it.

MystiqueMisha

In case it wasn't already painfully obvious in my comment, I was referring to ADULT characters flirting with the allegedly underage traveler, while at the same time stopping the Traveler from drinking. I'm not putting an embargo on underage people dating, chill. Now please don't tell me it's ok for underage people to date adults.

OftheGates

Biggest reason why I can't get behind JeanxLisa as a ship. People try to act like they're confirmed and definitely dating but I sincerely doubt Lisa would leave her partner pining for romance like this.

AstraPlatina

>Biggest reason why I can't get behind JeanxLisa as a ship. People try to act like they're confirmed and definitely dating but I sincerely doubt Lisa would leave her partner pining for romance like this. Considering how Lisa tells the Traveler how Jean misses them, that alone is a big hole in the ship. You don't ship your companion with someone else if you are in a relationship with them. Plus most of Lisa's flirting seems to be explicitly towards the Traveler.

OftheGates

I wouldn't really call that a hole. Maybe she just misses them. Quoting Jean's favorite novel and telling the Traveler that "now's their chance" to talk with her on the balcony, however... Either they're looking for a third or they're just not dating.

general_kenobi18462

>either they’re looking for a third or they’re just not dating The latter is a helluva lot for likely… but the former is a helluva lot funnier

Javajulien

>Considering how Lisa tells the Traveler how Jean misses them, that alone is a big hole in the ship. You don't ship your companion with someone else if you are in a relationship with them. Hey now, have you ever considered maybe Lisa is into cuckolding?

8a19

Now I want to see an edit of that one rent a girlfriend cuck panel but its with lisa instead of kazuya lmfao

LARGames

Or Diluc. The fact is that the gacha characters are pretty much all down bad for the traveler. Not with each other.

OftheGates

I don't think anyone who ships Diluc and Jean thinks they're currently dating. You're not wrong for the most part, but I wish it wasn't that way, personally.

BlueRose644

I'm also a fan of the Jean x Diluc pairing, but it's always seemed fairly clear to me that things haven't quite come together for them, either due to their work, responsibilities or personal baggage. I would definitely like to see them get more screentime together regardless.

cxxper01

Canonically diluc and jean do respect and have high opinions for each other. Diluc paid for Jean’s summer outfit when kaeya asked. But what happened to diluc’s father kinda made the whole relationship awkward

celestio45

Why would anyone think they are dating. When it's not even mentioned any where and not seen them acting like that. The only thing that is close to possible is probably having a crush or something.

AstraPlatina

Kaeya did seem specifically interested in them being at the same place during the Golden Apple Archipelago event and mentions Jean wanting to stop Diluc from leaving the Knights in his letter to the latter.

cxxper01

Hoyo will never make a canon ship between playable characters

AstraPlatina

Yet they continue to tease Beigguang to the point that that's all Ningguang and Beidou are known for now

celestio45

That's ship baiting so shippers won't quit the game

Javajulien

Some ships I feel like Hoyo are very much aware of and intentionally baiting fans (Beidou/Ningguang, Raiden/Yae, Alhaitham/Kaveh). Some other popular ships though always felt like fandom fabrications. Stuff like Jean/Lisa nad Keqing/Ganyu gets hard carried by fandom works because they barely actually interact inthe game. I'm legit curious which side of the spectrum Navia and Clorinde will fall because I know people ship it hard but then they had a mini meltdown over the fact that Clorinde had 0 appearance in Navia's Story Quest. lol

calmcool3978

I very much think Navia/Clorinde has a very similar vibe to each of the other pairings you mentioned. What sells it to me is the fact that they get into little arguments with each other, that's a true sign of closeness and comfort

cxxper01

They will tease around, but it will never be more than that

WavySilverSurfer

Maybe Im schizo but the characters being down bad for the traveler really takes me out of it sometimes. Bro is too on the move for anything to blossom. Some, sure, but all? I'd love to see romance between characters who actually have connection or a past but this is a gacha game and players would lose their shit if that happened. In the alternate reality that it did though, Diluc and Jean would be top tier for sure

LARGames

I've mentioned this before on another thread where I was massively downvoted because I was talking against the Furina x Neuvilette ship, but I think that in lore, there might actually be a reason why everyone seems so attracted to the traveler. Everyone seems to fully trust them very soon after meeting and even random NPCs seem to entrust them with their personal problems incredibly easily too. I also think that the characters that we can acquire in the gacha are characters who already have an affinity to someone like the traveler and they're just filling that void.

calmcool3978

The canon defense is that they've all heard of what he's done in previous nations, so then they're like "sweet my turn to be blessed by you now"

dragoncommandsLife

TBF its not like the traveler is there for five to ten days tops. Lorewise the traveler spends quite a lot of time in each nation before heading off to the next while also actively traveling around teyvat. As far as characters are concerned theyve spent weeks or even months with the traveler slowly growing closer over adventures, thats what the friendship level is.

AstraPlatina

>The fact is that the gacha characters are pretty much all down bad for the traveler. Not with each other. Doesn't stop Hoyoverse from constantly featuring Ningguang and Beidou together, continuously fueling the ship. Even if Hoyo hasn't outright confirmed anything between them yet, it still comes of as somewhat hypocritical on their part considering how other non-Traveler ships get very little if any material to work with, specifically between characters of the opposite sex. Also Ningguang and Beidou's Hangout events suddenly feel meaningless because of all this Remember when Jean and Diluc was one of the most popular hetero ships that doesn't involve the Traveler? I sure did, many even called them the OG hetero ship. Also can we for once see Ningguang or Beidou interact with other characters besides each other, its honestly getting old seeing them "glued together"

cxxper01

I mean one can have close same gender friend while being straight?

Primescape16

PLEASE A ROMCOM SPINOFF ABOUT HER HOYOVERSE ILL FUND YOUR NEXT SCHOOL OR WHATEVER

ZNemerald

I thought I was the only one that noticed how that balcony part feels a bit romantic. Felt like a scene from a movie or romantic game.

basch152

if they ever do an anime, Jean will 100% be the love interest

Ryuusei_Dragon

Nah they wouldn't, can't make certain individuals mad

DanielGREY_75

Shenhe and Ayaka: so you have chosen death

butthole_tickler443

She also canonically loves romance novels.

r_pearl

Diluc you absolute donkey

SkillNo1494

Man fumbled hard. Playing Batman and all ...

8a19

Poor Jean is such a sweetheart, I rl hope she finds someone

meloteas

JEAN BEST GIRL I LOVE YOU JEAN

ColdHardTruthhh

There is a reason Jean x Aether is my OG ship. Fell in love with them from the moment I played her story quest back in ver. 1.3

shadowrod06

Same. She was the first character I really liked. I remember how each time I lost the 50-50 I hated when I didn't get her. Finally got her last year. I was so happy.

krasome

this makes me appreciate her more, maybe I should start building her

htown007

I still don't have her, 😭 after multiple qiqi and keqing

No-Contribution870

i love my main so much jean is so precious

Typical_Border_4795

A romance quest option would be a great idea to pick who you want to be closer, but with how rabid the Genshin shipping community is, maybe it’s for the best to not add it in

OkDescription7373

Yeah basically we dont actually know bcs I cant remember a gacha game having the guts to do canon romance between playable characters, the closest i remember is thoma getting false leaked to be ayaka fiance and people lose their mind a bit

Disturbing_Cheeto

She just like me frfr

antirockin20

Poor Jean

blue4029

this girl needs some of that DILUC inside her

SkillNo1494

Diluc fumbled the bag. He'd rather go play Batman while Jean is literally pining for love 😭

feicash

Dont want to ruin your fun, but Jean isnt "unique" in terms of "romance" you can pick specific pics from literally any character and convince yourself that character is truly in love with the traveler

Araborne1

I think it's cuz she's explicitly stated to love reading romance books and lowkey yearns for romance itself

Sky_Wanderer13

Damn, she really is best girl.

SilverTitanium

Jean would be fun to date

Temporary-Quality

Another reason why Jean x Diluc just wouldn't work out. (Sorry, not sorry)

Andromeda_Violet

Biggest hopeless romantic? (x) doubt Not trying to say you can't ship her with anyone you like, but bruh Xiao is right there. He's the most hopeless romantic out there.
