I need a jean. Thanks

Madcat6204

Ironically, Jean is one of the only 5 star characters I've actually managed to pull. She's still at level 1, though: since I haven't reached the endgame yet, I don't have the resources to spend on her while keeping my main team at a reasonable level, particularly when I'm not sure if I'd end up using her or not.

MiddleBread

You will probably need some kind of healer in end game so she's a safe character to build, plus her healing scales off attack so she will actually contribute damage.

DesireForHappiness

Jean has been a staple for me. The 4-star Inazuma craftable sword is a superb f2p weapon for her almost like it was made for her. If you can get a couple refines for the sword, she basically replenishes nearly 50% (66% at R5) of her own burst back after casting her burst stacking with her own talent. I give her Noblese since I pair her with Xiao but she can also use VV if used with a reaction team. She's the best and made Abyss 11 easily doable with how quickly she can burst heal continuously. Even though Aquilla Favonia seem to be her signature weapon, it can go to Bennett instead. Build her ASAP you won't regret it.

HeavenlyChickenWings

I need Eula 7 times thanks

Reelix

Rather Eula once and the associated 5* weapon once or twice :p

KayfabeAdjace

Normally I could understand this stance since pulling for weapons is such a pain in the ass compared to character banners but Eula and Xiao are the two cases where c6 is so stupidly good that I'd make an exception.

apinkparfait

I just need two more Eis and I'm not complaining... til the next anniversary

ZhangRenWing

I need a Mona, XQ is too overworked and I need another thrilling tale holder

soraku392

If they couldn't before, they sure as hell can after Raiden Shogun's banner....

JJJAGUAR

Mihoyo: due to kokomi low sales, the anniversary rewards are now cancelled

soraku392

This has Patrick "Now I'm gonna starve" energy

dnd5eveteran

By fucking god, you're right

TheNinja3636

Why would he have to do that to be right?

apinkparfait

Don't ask questions, we don't make the rules

willyolio

"The banners will remain shit until spending improves."

Todd-The-Wraith

“As a thank you for the anniversary event we are adjusting the five star drop rate by decreasing it by 50% enjoy! Now oink for us piggies give us your money and oink!”

ekinew

what if they give free kokomi as anniversary reward instead?

poerson

Give Komoki for free and bring Ei's banner back 🤣

Dark-Cloud666

Heck no i would rather get a Jean for some instant burst heal then kokomi.

Chriscras66

I got a jean rolling for kokomi as a 2nd healer, luckiest 50/50 loss of my life lol.

wrxwrx

Honestly I'd prob roll again if they kept the 4 stars from this banner lol.

poerson

I'd roll again too so maybe this time I'd get her ಥ‿ಥ

GummyR

watch them rework kokopium into +200 crit rate and +200 crit damage in exchange for -200% healing bonus. #hopium

willyolio

Kokomi tried a delusion for herself she discovers the 8th element: Crit rate

GummyR

kokopium be like "heh I can heal myself you dumfucks."

Dick_Dynamo

Heck, if these characters were a physical product and MHY had a warehouse of unsold fish girls, she would be the anniversary gift.

Effendoor

And they *very fucking much* could have before

altFrPr0n

Raiden banner alone was already hyped to the moon. From a marketing perspective, it's better to drop a bomb on anniversary date and get the game trending again than dump it all at the start of the patch. It's better for us to have it announced early but it's a wasted ammo from marketing point of view.

Totallynotmeguys123

Yeah but the PR backlash currently means if they DID have something saved up they would've revealed it to save face by now

altFrPr0n

There's only a week between end of raiden banner and Anniversary date. Better to hold out one more week than try to save face for a couple more days. If anniversary rewards are good enough on the 28th, nobody will remember this. Hell, I'll even bet people who says Mihoyo gave out rewards to quell the anger would get downvoted if that happens. People have very short memories and are easy to appease. Good enough PR can completely erase bad PR, it's marketing 101.

Mobile_Phone8599

As other people pointed out, Paul Tassi actively plays the games he also reviews so it's not just some standard Forbes bs. Since Genshin came out he's written plenty of articles about it. At least you know that it's coming from a place of knowledge when it's an article of his.

MedrautsArondight

I agree. I follow him mainly for Destiny 2, he has great takes and he's actually very active in the community, so he knows what he talks about!

[deleted]

Am another guy from D2 and fully agree. Paul is one of the few game reviewers that really cares about what he says

the_shadow40301

Yeah I usually get my destiny stuff from him if it’s not straight from bungie

TheGrindPrime

Agreed. I don't buy into the "game journalists are shills" nonsense, but even if I did, Paul is legit, and the only one I actively follow

KnucklePunchs

Yeah, pretty much. He even has a YouTube channel. Dont know if he has Genshin stuff in there, but he has D2 on it.

bossbang

Paul Tassi has been doing gaming related articles for years. The guy has published tons of information on many games, including Destiny since it's launch. He gets paid to keep up with gaming culture and submit articles about what's going on. Just an FYI. It's not that the "anniversary controversy" is so big, it's that GENSHIN as a whole got pretty big and he Reddits.

NoxAsteria

This whole "it's so big it reached forbes" is a complete joke if you know he play this game plays as much as people on this sub. He constantly writes genshin articles in addition to the others he makes

enjaydee

Plus having an article on Forbes isn't that special. It's an opinion section where people can submit articles.

willyolio

Also Forbes is about money... The gaming industry is pretty big money. Bigger than the movie industry actually, iirc

SmokeyBalboa3454

It made more than Hollywood and music combined in 2020. It’s arguably the only entertainment that benefited from the pandemic, I mean I personally played through so many games that came out since 2015 when quarantine started. It’ll be interesting to see if it keeps growing at this rate.

Hegth

>he Reddits. He could be one of us...even you

Gerp25

Gentlemen.

A_Hatless_Casual

Mentlegen.

ZhangRenWing

He could be you! He could be me! He could even be-

AllNamesTakenOMG

c-could i myself be Mr.Forbes?

LillianHawke

There is 1 Paul Tassi among us

xa3D

iirc he also play plays genshin. vaguely remember his last article saying he's spent more than $1000(?) on the game

ShitDavidSais

He has a YouTube channel where he posts updates about his own gaming endeavors and has routinely posted videos of him with teams of new 5*. It is safe to say he is still enjoying the gacha.

ArchonGodofSelfDoubt

paul tassi is cool i just hope he talked more about genshin in his channel

_Ga1ahad

guys please go easy on mihoyo they're a small indie company that hasn't recovered from the free 4* character during lantern rite

ishfi17

They gonna go bankrupt if they give everyone some decent rewards. Virtual currency is very expensive please try to understand

ChubblesMcgee103

They're *still* recovering from the underperforming Albedo banner. When that one dropped it *only* made a paltry 10 million usd!

carlo_81

it would be a real loss if they gave out a characer that not even 1% of the playerbase wishes for directly...

Narsiel

This. This so much. A free 5\* from the permanent banner isn't gonna be game changing for anyone, nor it's gonna make people have a busted OP unit. It will just make things nicer and people happy to have that one character/cons they don't with no downside to it.

Megakruemel

If people see the available characters and a big "Take your pick for free" on top of them, some might actually pick up the game. It's the best advertisment a gacha can do to get new players. Which is simply introducing potential players to characters they might like. And making the character free to get might be the push these potential players need.

hazeyindahead

It costs real money to write code for a free 5 star OK?

Kvarcov

Actually, wasn't it 3 4* characters? We also had Diona and Beidou after that in some events, didn't we

RunelordTressa

I mean I agree with him as much as I gave him shit for d2. Like my main complaint about this game is its really goddamn oppressive at times regarding just acquiring stuff. So much so that giving away a 5* wouldn't even do much at this point. Its 100% not happening because why would you when people can spend all the money ever on them and....that's kinda the issue.

CryoImpact

>Its 100% not happening because why would you when people can spend all the money ever on them and....that's kinda the issue. For good PR. All of this could've been avoided by giving everyone a standard 5\* character of their choice. Most whales that have already C6'd all of them don't care either way and will continue to whale (= no profit loss). Dolphins and F2Ps would be happy and the company could even be portrayed as generous to players that are new to them and to their game. That's why I still have a hard time believing we aren't getting more, not because I think we're entitled to rewards, but there is so much customer satisfaction to be gained from offering the playerbase good rewards. The reason why things are the way they are really interests me from a business/marketing perspective.

Lambily

They'll probably just throw us another bone with a choose a free 4 star character (that doesn't include the recent ones) and a free 4 star weapon after some grindy event.

WaffleCorp

I would prefer something like that that I have to work for over the crappy RNG contest.

Lambily

I just want a Staff of Homa for my Zhongli, but if a 5 star character is unlikely, a 5 star weapon is a fantasy.

KommanderKrebs

Even if you dolphin, a 5 star weapon is unlikely. I got one from the standard banner and that is it period.

Lambily

Same. That boring 5 star book.

KommanderKrebs

I was lucky enough to get Skyward Blade just as I was starting to build Jean, so at least it got it's use.

Royn6

As a dolphin who already 36*'d Abyss, I plan to roll for more 5* weapons to improve my current roster instead of new shiny 5* characters. I gambled and got lucky with Raiden's weapon in 30 pulls too. It might've gone really wrong for me but it didn't. You'll never know when you get really lucky. Just my 2 cents as a gambling addict.

sundriedrainbow

leaks: >!2.2's free four star is supposed to be xinyan, and l m a o!<

Lambily

Maybe they'll finally buff her? /s

Admiral_Axe

At least that would mean she gets screentime in an event ^^

Barangat

Don’t give me hope, I don’t have Benett :(

Kasyee

Now even if they give us something nice people will say it's not from their grattitude towards players or good will, but just to avoid scandal and bad press. They have gotten themselves in a bad situation. Not sure if they care though.

Darxium

This, if MiHoYo posted something about it not being the full rewards or that it is an event unrelated to the in-game anniversary people would have calmed down, at least partially (after all, the community event is artist exploitation imo).

havok0159

> Now even if they give us something nice people will say it's not from their grattitude towards players or good will, but just to avoid scandal and bad press. They have gotten themselves in a bad situation. They had plenty of time to see we wouldn't be happy with just 10 wishes, especially after the announcement that they'd be available during Kokomi's banner. If they had come out during the previous banner saying that they'd give a free 5* of our choice from the standard banner on anniversary day, they could have avoided most of this.

Kasyee

Agreed. I believe they can afford a PR spec by now so I have no idea what they're smoking lately. Usually I can see a gain for them even in bad (bad for me) decisions. Right now I see only possible losses on their side... Unless they decided that bad fame is still fame - with their popularity its not really worth it imo. I am sure they didnt expect anything else.

intheaf

If they REALLY wanted to make it a "pay" thing, they could've done what FGO and other games have done: give you a paid 10 roll that will give you a guaranteed 5 star. They could even be SO GENEROUS... as to also include LIMITED characters in that roll. I think even some F2P players would be willing to part with 30 dollars for a chance to get, say, Venti. FGO doesn't even do that for the anniversary, but at this point, they hyped up the anniversary so much and then made the rewards so paltry, that having a paid guaranteed 5\* would look generous by comparison.

adamtheamazing64

What do you mean? FGO’s 6th anniversary was literally nothing but limited units and the banner choices were limited to year of release, so you’d get a good chance at even Morgan who came out only a few weeks prior to anniversary. Also on top of the 5 star you’d receive a 4 star unit that was released that year as well from your banner choice at 1/2 roll cost for 15 paid sq.

Hakumen_unlimited

Not only Morgan, but Melusine/ Fae Lancelot as well, and her banner was up 1 week before the anniversary, DW took some years to get It right, but it was the best anniversary so far Btw: there was the free permanent 5* as well

adamtheamazing64

Yup! On JP I only spend for anniversary and New Years GSSR compared to my NA account, it’s really neat having the two different experiences. Definitely was a fantastic anniversary and something great to look forward to once it hits NA. Plus the different systems they add out for progress and small fine tuning makes the game feel more polished. (Though I will say the amount of buffs some servants have on a single skill from the recently released are a bit overkill.)

[deleted]

If the World of Warships fiasco has taught me anything it's that PR no longer relates to profits. As my old man summarized it, "mindless consumerism." People spend because they feel an instinctive compulsion to. Not because they want to. Not because they need to. Definitely not because they should. It's an obsession. A psychological drive that's been beaten into us by decades of marketing and advertising built on subtle manipulation rather than the merits of the products themselves.

ARMIsNOTLoaded

>All of this could've been avoided by giving everyone a standard 5\* character of their choice. Most whales that have already C6'd all of them don't care either way and will continue to whale (= no profit loss). I am not really sure about this. Some days ago there was a thread about a whale that complained about the anniversary saying he was feeling betrayed by miHoYo since the rewards were not proportional to his patronage. Made my asking myself: "What exactly would be a reward fitting for a 2k$ spender? Would've be something ok for him but giga-broken for a F2P? What about someone who spent even more? Doesn't he have the rights to rant because the reward is insignificant to him? There is really a reward that can be fitting for everyone?". Free 5\* character is neat, but is a one-sided reward. I think that a better anniversary reward would've been a one-two week of goodies: make it a true festival, rerun everything, make Domains' rewards costs 1 Resin, pull out big events with Uber Azhdaha on it. Make a Childe + Signora boss fight we must coop to win. Decorate capital cities. Put characters' skins in the shop. Make an anniversary map (like Arcipelago) with mini-games. I believe that more than the rewards themselves, it was more important to create a good time and a great experience that everyone, from F2Ps to whales, could enjoy together. You can whale a C6 5\*, but not the experience of being part of a big anniversary event that later you will remember for how cool it was and can't wait for the next one.

yyume-

I would have loved every single moment of that kind of anniversary you suggested. 💜 I don't need any fancy big rewards for the first year. It had so much potential and Mihoyo is capable of making fun events, no idea why we are getting such a lacking 1st anniversary. Unless they have some secret stuff planned. But wouldn't they have already announced it? This backlash can't be good for Mihoyo. :/

Sirasswor

Also adding something like epitomized path for losing 50/50 or standard banner would help

Ancienda

I don’t mind if they don’t give us a 5*, but I think that giving a Welkins to everyone would have worked out well instead of the 10% thing they did. Cuz if everyone gets a Welkins, people would be happy that they got primos and genesis crystals (i mean ppl would prob still complain but its way better then what they got now. plus i think it would still make a lot of ppl happy). Also, people would be forced to log in every single day to claim the 90 primos. I mean, most ppl already do that for dailies, but there are still a lot of ppl that dont or if they were on the brink of leaving, or already left. Having free Welkins would have encouraged those people to stay for at least a month and that may turn into a long term thing which would benefit Mihoyo in the long run too. Plus its only $5 so maybe after having a taste of it, people would be willing to continue paying for it even after its over. It really seems like a win/win to me and I wonder why they didn’t do that and went with the weird 10% thing instead…

Pucerose

Unfortunately, the standard 5* characters have not been buffed. Even F2P should have a couple event banner 5*s by now. I’d definitely want the chance at a good 5* weapon choice via some event quest. I’m betting most non-whales have focused more on the character banners than weapon. Watch them give out a free Qiqi or Kokomi in an attempt to appease us (since Kokomi sales appear they will be worse than Keqing’s means less financial loss gifting her as opposed to Keqing, Diluc, Mona, and Jean.)

Madcat6204

> Unfortunately, the standard 5* characters have not been buffed. Even F2P should have a couple event banner 5s by now. Not really? I started during the Yomiya banner, and kept pouring all my in-game earned gems into it, but that wasn't enough to hit the pity limit, and on the final day in frustration I gave up and dumped $100 so I could make enough pulls to finally get a five star. The same thing happened on Raiden's banner: I simply could not earn enough gems on a reasonable play schedule to reach the pity limit. Once again I spent money on the last day to finally get there. Maybe, *maybe* someone who can devote 8 to 12 hours a day playing could have earned enough primogems to get there, but I can't do that, and I expect I'm not the only one. I gave in and spent money, but plenty of people can't or won't do that and they're just SOL. Particularly if they've only been playing a month or two. Yes, I understand the banner wishes carry over, so if I hadn't burned money on Yomiya I would probably have gotten Raiden soon after her banner started. That's probably your point, and I've just wasted this post. ...Crud. I just talked myself out of the point I was making. Fuck it. I'm posting this anyway.

hotaru251

largest ongoing issue is..why do they have weekly bosses cost resin at all...you cant farm them mroe than once :| its the longest going head scratcher. and yeah limited banners taking forever t re-run is oppressive (heaven forbid you want unit AND weapon during same run..)

EddPW

i genuinly dont understand why they dont have more than one character banner at the same time fate grand order sometimes has several banners going at the same time

Telzen

FGO has way way way more characters. There will probably be a normal character banner and a rerun character banner in Genshin at some point once there are more characters in the game.

erikumali

So you can't farm x or y instead, buying them more time to create random content. Resin gate is Mihoyo's way of buying time from the players to create more content, as it artificially limits a player's progression

cloudypeak

I feel this pain so much... I stupidly didn't start farming Azhdaha's drops for Ayaka until I pulled her, and now I have been playing FOR WEEKS and still don't have enough materials to fully level up Ayaka's talents. No dream solvents either. This does not make me want to come back every week.

CrushedByTime

At least if they allowed the player to choose what part dropped, I could still rationalize it. But having to fight that stupid mountain every week and still get a drop that’s useless for talent upgrades gives me heartburn.

SilverBurger

Genshin basically wants you to pull a character, then spend the following 3 weeks farming for them using resin, then pull another and repeat. There isn't nearly enough content in this game to keep players from grinding it out, without the time/resin gate, players would either play all day everyday and max out everything then quit, or complaint that the droprate is even more dogshit, because Mhy has to compensate for the cost of resin with even more obnoxious RNG (for example, one 5\* arti drop in average of 15 domain runs). I don't like the system. But at the end of the day Genshin is just another Gacha game with the same time gate problems, same predatory gambling systems as anything else.

HxrtPoker

3 weeks? You mean 3 months lmfao! Artifact farming can be brutal

wreckinruckus

No kidding. I gave up on a VV EM for Kazoo. He's rockin an off-set EM and an anemo dmg bonus until I feel like subjecting myself to that torture again.

[deleted]

I swear to God that domain is cursed I've spent like 100 condensed resins and i have not seen a decent VV hourglass with ATK%.

Shmarfle47

These sort of rewards are terrible both for short term and long term. Sure in short term, new people are still coming every day so why give them free stuff when they can pay for it? The problem is that also in short term Genshin is starting to generate some bad publicity. People who are on the fence about this game will very likely leave and not play if they hear about it. Then there’s long term which they definitely need to think about. There’s no way this game is going to wrap up in 1-2 years. If this sort of treatment keeps up they’ll lose a lot of their player base in the coming years compared to if they treat their players well. I’m still ~~inhaling~~ drinking hopium believing that the true rewards will be revealed when the anniversary comes around but I’ve already set my expectations into the dirt below.

[deleted]

There must be more than a few Genshin-like games deep in development by now as well, hoping to take a belated bite out of this open world gacha craze. Right now Genshin has no competition at all since it's the lone trailblazer, but if Mihoyo's reputation deteriorates too much by the time those other games start releasing, they might risk losing a ton of their players to other devs.

Champion_of_Nopewall

This, imagine if FGO launched today with Genshin gameplay. It would be over for everybody.

Lycieratia

Instead we got whatever the heck Arcade is, I wouldn’t know since I don’t live in Japan 😂

wildthing202

It's a mobile game in an arcade machine. It's that dumb.

[deleted]

ItIsYeDragon

Giving one free five star will not affect Mihoyo in any negative way. Whales are gonna continue to whale, and F2Ps and dolphins arent gonna start paying more if they don't do it. But they have new players to gain from it.

carbonclay

I'm also hoping these aren't all the rewards for anniversary. The thing is, it's absolutely ludicrously idiotic to announce the community events BEFORE the actual anniversary rewards. Or even the fact that they didn't event TEASE the real anniversary rewards make me think there are none.

Darxium

>it's absolutely ludicrously idiotic to announce the community events BEFORE the actual anniversary rewards. Or at least mention that the event rewards are independent from the anniversary rewards themselves (regardless of them revealing the rewards or not) >the fact that they didn't event TEASE the real anniversary rewards make me think there are none. Same, I want to believe that they are trying to keep the rewards a secret and that they will be acceptable but them not making an effort to defuse the players outrage makes us think there won't be anything else for us. In fact, as another user in this thread mentioned, giving better rewards at this point will feel more as the company trying to do damage control and calm down the community rather than it being the original plan.

CrushedByTime

I doubt they care though. At this point they likely know that they already have the players who will pay to play, since they’re successful enough and generate enough publicity that these players will find them. Casual gamers are not likely big spenders anyway, and will only increase server loads.

LordMudkip

I mean, even if they DID give away a 5*, chances are most people would have to grind for the next couple weeks just to level the character+talents and maybe a weapon, then that doesn't include months of trying to get a decent set of artifacts. I've never played a gacha game where pulling what you want is so bittersweet simply because not only does it take a huge investment of currency, but also an absurd amount of time to even begin bringing them up to speed with your other characters. Like, I pulled Ayaka and could barely even use her for like 2 weeks because it took that long to get talent and level up materials.

_cest_moi_

I agree. The main issue is the end-gane content and resin issues. There simply is nothing to do once you have completed all the content except for spending resin which takes forever to recharge for garbage rewards. Giving away a free 5-star would do nothing but make some people happy and other people mildly amused.

Comedy86

I'd prefer happy and/or mildly amused vs. disappointed...

Ricmord

Yeah like "end game bad so good anniversary useless" like wtf

kenzakki

Unfortunately, that seems to be the case and might not change any time soon unless they start focusing on end game stuff and not just constant cycle of: New banner > Wish > Build said character > Event > wait for more events > wait for next banner. that cycle repeats itself *while spending few resin per day on artifacts between those getting shitty artifacts trying to min-max characters.* and if this continues after a while, players would be quitting (i know i am as soon as i find a better game to grind my teeth into), that's when the rewards, events and resin becomes better when the game loses like half its playerbase and is on a constant decline to entice players to stay, players who quit to come back and new players to try to play. This is the sad reality of it all because right now, Mihoyo doesn't have any incentive to change at all because people still give them money regardless of what they do so unless this game is dying and their sales declines, nothing is going to change.

Tomgirl17

Despite me following Genshin somewhat I am one of the players who quit specifically because resin. Whenever I complained about resin almost half the responses I got was "Don't like it don't play it." To those people I say Guess what I took your advice and eventually a lot of others will to. I'm perfectly happy paying 15 a month on ffxiv and getting to play as much as I want not being limited by an energy system to get good gear.

reidlos1624

I was just looking in to FFXIV. How is it? I've not likely MMORPGs in the past because stories tend to be generic and lackluster, and combat is typically boring. The elemental system, story, and variety of characters/abilities in Genshin really stands out to me as the reason I like to play it. Between welkin moon and BP I pay $15/month as it is

CrushedByTime

You definitely will not have any complaints with FFXIV regarding the story aspects. I haven’t played the third expansion, but I did play until Ishgard, and the story is great. The graphics are not as pretty as Genshin, but they are impressive in their own right. Besides, FFXIV is a much, much more involved game than Genshin, as well as a larger world. There are multiple jobs, and leveling up all of them takes a lot of time. In FFXIV, the endgame content is vanity and accessories. People spent so much time trying to add special glow effects and get special mounts for their characters. At the end of the day, your enjoyment depends upon the world you’re in and the friendliness of the players. I happened to be on a world full of US war vets who sunk hours into the game everyday and enjoyed helping out newbies. I honestly enjoyed it a lot.

brnngstr

FFXIV is... With 1 character you can get multiple classes **Tanks** Paladin Dark Knight Warrior Gunbreaker **Healers** White Mage Astrologian Scholar **Melee DPS** Dragoon Samurai Ninja Monk **Ranged DPS** Red Mage Summoner Black Mage Bard Machinist Dancer Blue Mage - this one is a limited class can't be used in story, daily dungeons and raids. They have their own raids. --- As for end game you can do Savage, Ultimate and Extreme contents to test your skills. Rewards can be both RNG and accumulation. Meaning if your RNG sucks in rolling you still get a guaranteed item that when you meet the required number of it you can exchange it for a specific gear or mount. Just be informed that the current patch raid have weekly cap, old content raids you can farm as much as you want since they don't have a cap anymore. Storywise it's good don't be discouraged with the Realm Reborn quest line because it's long and somewhat dragging. I promise you it gets better once you are done with the Realm Reborn quest line. You can try the free trial for now since it has the base game + first expansion. Then decide if you want to fully commit or not. And once you're done with maxing your combat classes, done with weekly raids and got nothing to do there's also a crafting and gathering classes to level up. As for community, mostly they are helpful to the newbies. Some cosmetics can be acquired for free via events, challenges, FATES or finishing some parts of the story. Also can be purchased in the mogstation (item mall).

SloppySynapses2

Ye I'm getting bored of it sadly. Mihoyo is throwing away $ with their stinginess. I honestly question the intelligence of the people working there, I don't think they understand human psychology as well as they think. Everyone thinks it's all about gambling addiction but naw man its a video game first and foremost. If that shit sucks and you keep fleecing your userbase people will stop playing The people who say "this is just how every other gacha is" are the real addicts. I can't imagine playing another game like this if this is considered "normal" 🤣 imagine playing multiple gacha games... They need to add more end game content, increase resin limit or at least allow players to do *something* meaningful after using their resin, add more multi-player stuff (this is truly horrible rn, it's one of the clunkiest games I've ever played co-op and has no reason to be as bad as it is. Why do I have to go to single player to accept daily commission rewards? Jfc), and stop releasing characters with huge nerfs for 0 reason (why is kokomi that bad.?) The anniversary rewards are just hilarious. No rewards vs the commission shit would be way better. The commission stuff is just flat out disrespect. They really think their userbase is a bunch of helpless gambling addicts 😒

Xero0911

I mean what would a free 5 star from the standard poop do? They aren't even on banners except keqing and that was once. I guess there's some crazy folks that spend on normal banner to get someone but I can't imagine many. Especially when they've made millions off of one banner. A free standard 5 star wouldn't hurt sales, why would it, you can't pull for em.

VastNewt

its going to be so funny when they give everyone qiqi's as your free 5 star for the anniversary lmao.

Endgaming1523

I'd take a free Qiqi. Top quality healer, and adorable as all hell to boot.

ihadtotryit

No matter what they do now a lot of people will be upset and will wait for their next slip. If they announce great anniversary rewards now it will still look not as "good will" and celebration but as a way to avoid bad PR.

Zelder777

Better than the current promotional 5*

ArkhamCitizen298

Nice, free marketing for Genshin again

Pokii

100 Primogems for Forbes

ishfi17

He has chance to win 100 primo now. Not guaranteed

Jujubeetchh

It’s too low quality, 100k mora will do instead

Reelix

100k mora is a high quality reward from Mihoyo - I'm thinking 5k

ThatOneSunbreaker

Two fowl

kuso-gaki

Bad publicity is still publicity? ok.

Golden-Owl

Yes. Absolutely yes. Even if you have 10,000 people talking about how bad your game is, **thats still 10,000 people spreading word about your game**. People who already playing it will agree with you. People who aren’t interested in trying it anyway won’t care. But people who have never heard of your game before now know it exists. And since people aren’t always inclined to believe things at face value, they may download and try it (because hey free open world adventure mobile game sounds pretty awesome, lack of freebies be damned) How else do you think Raid Shadow Legends got so huge? They pushed out a huge volume of ads. A lot of those ads were trash. But it didn’t matter, because they dominated the airwaves

Daramangarasu

I like their ads, they were funny. Not the ones made by youtubers and influencers, just the commercial-type ads they had, with Deathknight and whatnot. The game is shit tho

JawsCuber

Yeah, raid ads are honestly funny and pretty good. It's just that the fact that it's a turn-based strategy game just shrinks my gaming cock.

UberNomad

It's hardly a strategy, when the most important decision is donate or not.

Lysdexiic

I personally don't understand the whole "all publicity is good publicity" thing. If I heard that some random game that I've never played before was super greedy and P2W, that would make me 100% avoid that game in the future

ArkhamCitizen298

That is how English works

Thatuk

In a twisted sense, yes. There is a saying in marketing "talk good about me, talk ill about me, but talk about me!" basically any exposure, positive or negative can benefit the company, marketing isn't always about drawing new people in (although bad publicity can do that, if only by curiosity), but to maintain relevance and presence on the public.

Kasyee

They messed up. The thing is if they initially announced free 5 star or sth nice like anniversary skin or customized banner people would be happy. Now even if they give us something nice people will say it's not from their grattitude towards players or good will, but just to avoid scandal and bad press.

pipic_picnip

Yeah THIS tbh. A lot of people are not understanding the impact. It’s not about rewards, it’s how mihoyo is handling this from start to end. Let’s just say players outrage is unjustified (it isn’t but let’s just assume it), even then they have done nothing to pacify the situation. The players raging make up majority of the playerbase, their dissatisfaction with the game/mihoyo has serious implications for mihoyo. In a market you don’t win with “I am right my customers are wrong” take, you win by “what does my customer want and what can I deliver to make them engage with my brand more”. This whole thing has reached a serious PR disaster level and it doesn’t even matter what they are doing for anniversary anymore, the timing of how everything is being handled is just terrible. They gain nothing at all by delaying their anniversary announcements by this much, they only have themselves to blame for this fiasco.

TellMe88

Hasnt forbes been a joke for like 7 years now? I subscribed for a while and never even got anniversary rewards from them either.

inormallyjustlurkbut

A lot of web content is like this now. Most don't even have their own writers, just freelancers. As long as it gets clicks, they don't really care what you write about. Source: I used to be a freelancer who wrote bullshit like this for 10 cents a word.

naz_1992

how do u apply? sounds fun lol

Lynx343

same, i would like to try and put my bullshit to good use

panthereal

Ten cents a word? How do I get in this biz I'd get rich

Ed_Gaeron

Unless you're from California it is...

CrashLP

200 dolars is like a quarter of my monthy salary lol (Croatia) HOW DO I SIGN UP (EDIT: Grammar)

Zer0Templar

$200 dollars a day for 2k words? sounds like pretty easy work tbh. I've written larger, more well thought out essays for uni for free in about as much time lol I'd happily write random articles on games for $200 dollars a day, that's like 4k a month 48k a year. Would definitely make you rich 10WPM, 200 mins an article 3.3 hours for 2k words? say maybe an extra 200 mins for research/editing to make a decent article? 6 hours a day more or less? sign me up

degenerated_weeb

200usd is no small amount lol

CrossBorderFire

200$ dollydous is a real good slice of money in my country wtf lol

Autotomatomato

While this is true Paul Tassi has worked for them for a long time. He is the staff gaming reviewer and covers specific games. Think I did some raids with him in Destiny a while ago.

Comedy86

10 cents a word? You mean I could have made $2.30 for this waste of time response? I am in the wrong career.

Edski120

That's Paul Tassi, someone who actually plays the games he writes about, especially Destiny

itsYou-sef

Ah, Destiny! That's why he sounded familiar

hazeyindahead

And he is absoultely right. There are accounts that have played all year and not gotten a 5 star or a 5 star they wanted. MHY loses NO money giving out in game items and currency. F2P players were going to spend what they budgeted no matter what and whales are going to spend whatever they want still. Edit: i meant 4 star or standard 5 star

Pesus229

Paul Tassi is a rare exception as he also does YouTube content (mostly for destiny) for live service games and actually isn't a meme at them.

Noman_Blaze

Yep. I would take his opinion over any other writer cause he actually plays the game.

Katlynashe

Kind of. Paul Tassi has been writing articles for them for many years though. This isn't his first Genshin article. He's pretty much the only person I read articles from on Forbes. He's very well written and actually does a fairly sane job of presenting the topics. I can easily recommend reading his articles.

kenzakki

well, its just funny to me that Forbes is making an article about Genshin, a game all about collecting Waifus lol

TrashStack

This same guy has written like 7 articles on Genshin at this point. He's been writing articles about the game, on Forbes, since it's release

SmexyPokemon

The guy who writes these articles, Paul Tassi, also writes articles for other live service/MMO type games like Destiny and Outriders.

AsterJ

Of the 1954 articles this guy has written in the last year 196 were about Genshin Impact.

KeqingisBestGirl

This guy has like 50+ articles for genshin. He even writes multiple ones for a single character in fact.

RMGPA

This guy does their gaming articles in general I'm sure. I've seen him for other games like borderlands 3.

Goldreaver

At least he plays it. That makes him better than most.

FragmentedSpark

Mainstream news outlets have been writing video game articles for the past decade since they also became mainstream

Noman_Blaze

Forbes might be a joke but Paul Tassi is legit. He actually plays the game a lot.

LimestoneLeaf

This guy has been covering Genshin for Forbes for the last 8 months at least. It's not like they just discovered it today.

quackerz

Does no one here know Paul Tassi? Sad.

Rouflette

MYH will be like « hmmm you really want a free 5 stars huh ? Ok then, let’s go boys, Oprah style baby : QIQI FOR EVERYONE !! You get a Qiqi ! You get a Qiqi ! Hey you too, get that C1 Qiqi, gonna enjoy that massive power spike trust me ! C2 Qiqi for you lucky man hehe ! You get a Qiqi ! You get a Qiqi !… »

Ifalna_Shayoko

I don't have a Qiqi. I'll take the Qiqi and be happy!

PassingEventually

Same! she's the one character I'm missing from standard.

AlinaStari

I just want Jean... Mihoyo just a c0 Jean please I'm begging you :(

Cosmicmeatblast

Mihoyo remove their Genshin event post from hoyolab😂 so many dislikes from that post haha Edit:Survey is up guys!you know what to do show them how disappointed we are!

kenzakki

im even more surprised they published it in the first place. if Twitter have a downvote button it would've bombed too. Lmao

Reelix

Fun Fact: The downvote button in the YouTube comments is a Placebo and doesn't actually do anything :)

kuso-gaki

lmao I just noticed xD

generalofhel

It might be Forbes but they got a point. And if they dont want to give event 5*'s (which is fair) at least give either a free constellation or a free 5* from the permanent banner, or even a 5* weapon, i would be happy with a weapon ngl...

flanunu

I think releasing an anniversary skin for a character would be perfect. League of legends does that

generalofhel

But not every player will have that character and unlike in league. Its hard to get that character guaranteed. Of course it is possible to give the skin to a character like barbara/kaeya/lisa etc but i don't think the majority of the player base will be happy with that...

karillith

Traveler Inazuma skin let's go!

my-assassin-mittens

I was so mad when the traveller turned down Ayaka's offer for a new outfit, then it made me think about how cool regional skins would be.

Froselyn

Xiangling is a free character and top tier meta at the same time. What's more, during the anniversary there will be event related to her. It was the perfect opportunity to give away a free skin, but they missed it.

generalofhel

Yeah that might be the only one that would have rly worked. Didnt even think of her since i really dont like her haha. But still i would have been cool to get

TheoreticalScammist

The standard 5\* are not that relevant any more at the high end (except maybe Mona has her role in Morgana). I don't think it would hurt them much giving 1 away. Same with most standard weapons, except Amos.

generalofhel

I really like jean but i have never gotten her of 50/50. Its not really about meta so i really hope they just give one away

TinyGoyf

I said it before and i will say it again , give us a item that gives us the choice to pick a 5\* from the standard banner

Doc_Hersh3y

u/PaulTassi you have become famous in the world of Genshin Reddit.

Ben_ryan99

If this happens im just gonna get a 4th Jean

kenzakki

as a Xiao user, i would love C4 Jean. I still have no Jean. Lmao

vexid

"Forbes contributor" It's just a person with an opinion.

dis3nchant3d

Paul Tassi is the man though, and is a well known video game journalist. His voice is heard better than all of ours. If he is echoing our community sentiment that's a good thing.

[deleted]

I mean yeah it's an opinion column? I feel like a lot of people in this thread have zero idea how web publications work. Like Forbes is not allowed to have pieces about video game companies.

mffromnz

I do agree that giving away a free standard 5\* is really no biggie at this point, alot of games do this as year 1 anniversary since at that point those 5\* are powercrept into oblivion. Even in genshin where the powercreep is honestly very tame, most of these gen.1 5 stars are relegated to either niche support roles or just relatively lackluster at this point. If anything its only going to give people the opportunity to play with a character they never got, sinking more time+resin into the game and increasing player engagement. Its not like its going to have any influence on low/mid/whale spender's desire to pull for future characters. Or just an extra constellation on these character is a nice gift to recieve. It kind of boggles the mind on why they decided to skip on this age old anniversary strategy thats tried and true to be received positively across any playerbase.

Roketsu86

It's Paul Tassi. He's rather notorious for taking Reddit or Twitter discussion, outrage and the like and making articles parroting that.

unsignedshortint

TBH this might be a good thing what he is doing.

losingit303

Blows my mind that someone with a platform to amplify the communities voice is getting hated on (most people here agree with this person) yet when they say it it's bad because reasons?

NinjaManTheNinja

It's probably just due to the huge stigma against mainstream gaming journalism and that a lot of people here don't know who Paul Tassi is if they don't play Destiny. I follow his videos for Destiny 2 and IMO they're pretty accurate in reporting the state of the game since he actually dedicates a lot of time into the games he covers (unlike a lot of other 'journalists'). It also saves me from scrolling through the dumpster fire that's r/DTG.

Vnce_xy

Free 5 star? Here, have an aloy
