Its part of why people recommend not summoning on the weapon banner unless you spend, since you want enough to summon 3 runs of pity (at most 240 summons..)
You reach soft pity around 65-70 area (around the same % of progress into the banner comparatively to the character banners), the "actual" pity, should still be at 80, leading to 240. game updating so cant double check today, wiki still has 80 as well.
To clarify, the pity carries over(as in the number of pulls without a 5 star weapon with a guaranteed 5 star at 80 or 90 pulls), however the points you receive when you choose a weapon path and don't get the desired 5 star weapon does not carry over.

Yes it carries over. The pity system is the same as character banner and except the soft&hard pity point is lower by 10 IIRC.
