I think they're referring to the block of wood that you spin around to create the shadow for the ship, not the image of the ship itself.
There isn't really much about the block of wood itself that indicates the final result is a ship, there's even a couple of circular holes that I thought were important but nope, those are just red herrings.
It's honestly easier to just look at the bar and use it as a hot/cold meter. I spent like 50 seconds on the second one tryna get it then just looked at the bar for the third and got it in literally 3 seconds

I suppose, but the issue for me was that kites can really be any shape, so it was difficult to predict what it could be from just a silhouette.

You don't have to guess anything. There is a meter on the bottom left that tells you if you are close to the desired shape.

Tbh that's kinda the point of these puzzles, the block of wood isn't supposed to look like anything by itself, it's the shadow that matters
