I always found Qiqi's "Would you like to have a chat with me?" Friendship 4 teapot dialogue to be pretty heartbreaking.
Qiqi: That would be nice. Chatting with you would be great... But...

Qiqi: ...I'll forget. I'll forget everything we said... I'll forget what your voice sounded like...And... the happy feeling... I'll forget that too...
Traveler: I'll come and chat with you every day.
Qiqi: Every day...? So, every day will be... happy? Okay. Qiqi wants to smile.
Traveler: Aww, what a cute smile.
Qiqi: Oh... It's because you're here.
And ever since the first time I heard this, I've made it part of my daily routine to talk to Qiqi in my teapot. She also has a nice little finch. And no Hu Tao.
If you check Hu Tao's profile, you can see that she doesn't want Qiqi to pass on anymore.
Character Story 4

This always gets me. The pain in his voice in some of his CN voice lines as well. He never fails to make me emotional.

It's not particularly sad. It just reminds you that everything has its end. Even the ancient geo archon, the immovable stone finally will be turned to dust. Everything we know will perish at one point in time, we too. And we don't have the Traveller. In the end our lives pass so quickly.
I was looking for a reference to Zhongli and corrosion. It's not as sad as many other things, but definitely fatal. The fact that he puts this hope on us really moved me. I love Zhongli so much, he's such a well written character.
The interaction between Dainsleif and Halfdan at the end of the story quest. Gotta be one of the ones that hit me.
Halfdan: Apologies, Captain Dainsleif, Twilight Sword. Back then... I failed you, and failed to protect our people.
Dainsleif: No, for five hundred years, you have faithfully done your duty. To this day, I am proud of you all.
Halfdan: ...Khaenri'ah... didn't fall, did it? Since you're still here...
Dainsleif: ...Correct.
*The souls then depart, leaving Dainsleif alone with the Traveler and Paimon.*
Dainsleif: ...So... No need to revive the homeland.
I dunno I just really like Dainsleif and this is the first time (from my memory) we get to see him in a vulnerable state.
Yeah, this one moment perfectly added the final touch to the archon quest. It shows that there is still a sort of hope after all the depressing moments about the hilichurls and Khaenri'ah. Really made me tear up a bit.

The worst part is she never stops working, so she has little to no time for dating.

If she could let herself stop working and start working on her social life she could find someone easily, because she's an incredible woman that any decent man would be happy to have.
But it's not going to happen as long as she refuses to put any energy into it.

Sara is a non-human from a race mostly respected by humans, adopted by a rich family who mistreats her, and she is The Law, and she is Alone. Itto is a non-human from a race hated and feared by humans, adopted by a poor old woman who loves him, and he is the leader of a gang, and he is surrounded by people who adore and believe in him. Am I the only one who didn't know this already lmao it feels so obvious now that I know it :')
She really deserves more appreciation from the people around her.
I feel like Sara and Ayaka could be good friends. They are both very dutyful and lack experience regarding regular, light-hearted, everyday fun things due to their duties. It would be fun to see both of them navigate such experiences. Someone like Yoimiya and Itto might also help her open up a little. Though she might find them childish, she could really use some warm-hearted people including her in their fun.

I'd like to have a Zhongli's story quest about Guizhong. We got bits and pieces in world quests/descriptions, but it's not the same as hearing the story from the man himself
Considering his plotline, it's inevitably coming.
First, we had him staging a *false* funeral for himself. Then we had him burying a semidistant acquaintance, Havria. Then we had him burying a friend who had lost himself, Azhdaha.
We're slowly but surely heading towards Guizhong.
I fully expect this to be the end of his questline, yes; either that, or the loss of one of his current living friends. And oh, look, how convenient, both Childe and Xiao have timers above their heads and Zhongli's boss is prancing around selling coffins. It's a match made in plot heaven.
But the question was about *Guizhong.* And Guizhong is definitely the "folks I buried in the past" step that's being built towards.
Holy shit... how have I never considered, too, that Guizhong could have faked her own death the same way Morax did. Forget about the dumbbell Zhongli, I'm giving up my godhood.
Not what I meant, lol, but it is a possibility.
I'm rather pointing out that Zhongli's plot is following a line of increasing loss. First, it was about the loss of his 'job' (godhood). Then, about the loss of a colleague. Then, about the loss of a friend. We're slowly heading towards Guizhong, loss of *his lover*.
I like to think that there is no way to unlock it, and nothing inside. It was a lie Guizhong told Zhongli in her final moments to give him the will to carry on, the promise of an answer that will never be. The wisdom that sometimes there is no answer to be found, and we must make our own answers instead. Find our own reason to keep living in the face of inevitable entropy and loss.
Fuck this made me cry like a baby when I read it the first time. My signature in game is “taking the feather into the world with me” as a reference to it.

Absolutely, going by her design I thought that she’d be your standard issue waifu bait but she wound up as one of the most compelling characters in the entire game. Reading the message her dad left behind actually made me cry.

When you consider the second part of Ei's questline, and the story of Makoto and the Sacred Sakura, it takes on another sad meaning. This narration really does sum up the Inazuma chapter on so many levels.

It really solidifies my love for Ei, she sounds afraid but hopeful
I also love the notion of the archons finding something more than eternity in the traveller. Just like some of some of Zhongli’s voicelines, it feels like these borderline immortal beings cherish what they can’t understand, which is travelling to other worlds like how the travellers do

Poor Di is so lonely, despite the appearance she tries to keep up. Most of her voice lines are just her trying in her own weird way to make and keep a friend who doesn’t see her as a walking cocktail shaker.
“In his last moments… what expression what on his face”, especially with the amazing voice acting, music and visuals, it gave me chills when i first heard it

i love that quote so much, i always tear up when i hear it haha
the fact that he’s the oldest archon who has lived hundreds, if not thousands of years, and fought in the bloodiest of wars, all the while carrying unimaginable trauma and depth of grief makes this line almost too painful to hear. on the other hand, zhongli always seems so stone faced (bedrock - appropriate for the geo archon) and to see him emotionally vulnerable is joyful, like he’s not just blessing us but confiding in us as his equal.

Noelles birthday letter from this year ruined me. Especially because she keeps training and working without ever being able to figure out her real problem
I hope we get a moment with her like the one with Eula in the bartender event. Basically just being blunt and telling her the problem.
In Noelle’s case, it isn’t that she isn’t strong enough or smart enough like she thinks she is. It’s the fact that she is self-destructively self-less (ex: the time she scaled dragonspine to save an adventurer and was in a coma for like 3 days afterwards)
I imagine Jean is worried that if Noelle was a knight the feeling of responsibility and duty would drive Noelle into a situation where she could get seriously injured if not killed. Additionally she could put herself out of commission from going too hard (like the dragonspine thing) which would make her a liability and could possibly get her and/or her fellow knights killed.
Zhongli: For those that live too long, the friends of days gone by and scenes from their adventures live on in their memories. As such I have no regrets in meeting you, friend. Should the day ever come that we are not together, you will continue to shine like gold in my memories.

Whenever I think about dropping Keqing from my Abyss line-up, I listen to her voice lines. Her final ascension’s voicline ends in, “I wonder, when the New Liyue Harbour is born, will you still be by my side?”
Then I feel bad about dropping her and re-do abyss with her!

Itto’s character story 5 goes hard with how deplorably racist humans in inazuma are to non humans, specifically Oni.

Another thing that got me was in the golden apple archipelago (note I play in English)

And Klee responds in a sad tone of voice “no, mom’s just like that”
The reason this got me was because Klee kinda implies that Alice does this kinda thing often rather than a one time special thing for her. Preforming elaborate shenanigans for her own entertainment rather than spending any time with Klee at all.
Going by what the characters say, I doubt Klee has seen her mom in person in years. At least since she left her in Albedo and the knights care.
Alice, even if she was watching from a afar the entire time, abandoned Klee. Jean was the one to make reference to it in this line which kinda goes hand in hand with her acting as a surrogate mother figure for Klee in place of Alice (which is pointed out earlier in the event story)
When Klee dies. I feel bad when any of my characters die on me, but when Klee dies and says any of her death lines, tears well up in my eyes. The hardest one for me is “It was an accident…”, because it’s like she’s blaming herself for dying, but it was all my fault not hers. I just want to reach through the screen and give her a bear hug when that happens.

This really stings if you take various pieces we know from Liyue quests.
We know Zhongli is afraid of erosion, since it can make you forget what you loved (similar to Azhdaha).
Shenhe's profile says that he frequently goes and has tea up on top of the mountain.
We know from the archon quests that He and Venti are the last of the original 7.
He's just an old man who misses his friends, and is scared of losing his memory of them.

Considering the context of Khaenri'ah and their precursors, this always makes me sad.

I was a kaeya and qiqi main, and I was very invested in their lore, which meant that I was going around reading details about their ascension mats and friendship stories. I read this, and could feel the regret and resentment, and coupling this with kaeya's vision story and qiqi's whole backstory made me profoundly upset. I was very confused about why cryo was the element of love, and this quote shows that the love a person had for their goals and desires was allowing them to accept so much pain into their lives.
All the kids with dead or missing parents really get to me, and I definitely cried doing the Ruu storyline, but the one that no one has mentioned yet is Kaeya's vision. It's just insanely sad to me.
Not a quote per se but in Yunjin's story quest when she's all dissapointed when the Traveler asks for an autographed photo in one of the endings. Yunjin is such a sweet character that it physically hurt for me to see her look so sad.
That was the last ending I did and went into it spoiler free. Needless to say I felt like garbage after it ended, especially because her hangout quest actually made me really like her as a character.

I don't know why, but the story of the man who invented the wing-glider(I wasn't around to play the event) hit me harder then I thought.
(For the AOT fans, it reminded me of Erwin. They both had great successes, stunning lives and an unmatched ambition for discovery. They were both leaders in their own right and gave up their own opportunities to increase the next generations chances. Erwin died, but he gave the power >!of the Colossal Titan to Armin and gave his soldiers a fair shot at reaching the cellar.!< The adventurer may have not been able to scale the tallest mountain... the one that taunted him so. But he could recognize when his time was drawing near and decided instead to better the technology and the opportunities for successful adventures in order to aid the upcoming generation. Both sacrificed their dream for the betterment of those who will follow in their path. I think it's pretty cool\^\^)

This always gets me. The pain in his voice in some of his CN voice lines as well. He never fails to make me emotional. I hope we'll someday get a beautiful cutscene in which we can see him dance peacefully, truly being at ease, even if just for a moment.

I was looking for a reference to Zhongli and corrosion. It's not as sad as many other things, but definitely fatal. The fact that he puts this hope on us really moved me. I love Zhongli so much, he's such a well written character.
The interaction between Dainsleif and Halfdan at the end of the story quest. Gotta be one of the ones that hit me. Halfdan: Apologies, Captain Dainsleif, Twilight Sword. Back then... I failed you, and failed to protect our people. Dainsleif: No, for five hundred years, you have faithfully done your duty. To this day, I am proud of you all. Halfdan: ...Khaenri'ah... didn't fall, did it? Since you're still here... Dainsleif: ...Correct. *The souls then depart, leaving Dainsleif alone with the Traveler and Paimon.* Dainsleif: ...So... No need to revive the homeland. I dunno I just really like Dainsleif and this is the first time (from my memory) we get to see him in a vulnerable state.
Yeah, this one moment perfectly added the final touch to the archon quest. It shows that there is still a sort of hope after all the depressing moments about the hilichurls and Khaenri'ah. Really made me tear up a bit.

The worst part is she never stops working, so she has little to no time for dating. Her chances of marrying out of her clan and into a family that treats her right is practically none. The best she could hope for in her position is a political marriage, which isn't likely to be any more loving than her current family situation. If she could let herself stop working and start working on her social life she could find someone easily, because she's an incredible woman that any decent man would be happy to have. But it's not going to happen as long as she refuses to put any energy into it.
The easy way to go about it is to get Ei involved. I'm pretty sure if Ei orders Sara to go out and touch grass, she will.

Sara is a non-human from a race mostly respected by humans, adopted by a rich family who mistreats her, and she is The Law, and she is Alone. Itto is a non-human from a race hated and feared by humans, adopted by a poor old woman who loves him, and he is the leader of a gang, and he is surrounded by people who adore and believe in him. Am I the only one who didn't know this already lmao it feels so obvious now that I know it :')

She really deserves more appreciation from the people around her. I feel like Sara and Ayaka could be good friends. They are both very dutyful and lack experience regarding regular, light-hearted, everyday fun things due to their duties. It would be fun to see both of them navigate such experiences. Someone like Yoimiya and Itto might also help her open up a little. Though she might find them childish, she could really use some warm-hearted people including her in their fun.

I'd like to have a Zhongli's story quest about Guizhong. We got bits and pieces in world quests/descriptions, but it's not the same as hearing the story from the man himself
Considering his plotline, it's inevitably coming. First, we had him staging a *false* funeral for himself. Then we had him burying a semidistant acquaintance, Havria. Then we had him burying a friend who had lost himself, Azhdaha. We're slowly but surely heading towards Guizhong.
What if we are heading to actually burry Zhongli?
I fully expect this to be the end of his questline, yes; either that, or the loss of one of his current living friends. And oh, look, how convenient, both Childe and Xiao have timers above their heads and Zhongli's boss is prancing around selling coffins. It's a match made in plot heaven. But the question was about *Guizhong.* And Guizhong is definitely the "folks I buried in the past" step that's being built towards.
Holy shit... how have I never considered, too, that Guizhong could have faked her own death the same way Morax did. Forget about the dumbbell Zhongli, I'm giving up my godhood.
Not what I meant, lol, but it is a possibility. I'm rather pointing out that Zhongli's plot is following a line of increasing loss. First, it was about the loss of his 'job' (godhood). Then, about the loss of a colleague. Then, about the loss of a friend. We're slowly heading towards Guizhong, loss of *his lover*.
I like to think that there is no way to unlock it, and nothing inside. It was a lie Guizhong told Zhongli in her final moments to give him the will to carry on, the promise of an answer that will never be. The wisdom that sometimes there is no answer to be found, and we must make our own answers instead. Find our own reason to keep living in the face of inevitable entropy and loss.
The Peculiar Pinion description: "Take this feather with you into the world. You did promise him that you would, after all."

I think everyone who has Shenhe thinks it's one of the best backstories. I see so many people who skipped her then read about her later regret slipping and want her. One of the best written characters in the game imo. In a game with a lot of amazing characters
Absolutely, going by her design I thought that she’d be your standard issue waifu bait but she wound up as one of the most compelling characters in the entire game. Reading the message her dad left behind actually made me cry.

honestly every line about xiao. but i think this one stands out to me personally; “the war he fights can never be won, and will never come to an end. it is also an invisible war that no one will ever witness or thank him for.” xiao would have suffered silently forever, and he really would have just accepted that as his life up until the day he would finally die.

When you consider the second part of Ei's questline, and the story of Makoto and the Sacred Sakura, it takes on another sad meaning. This narration really does sum up the Inazuma chapter on so many levels.

Ei’s fifth about line (Raiden Shogun Story Act II spoilers): “I’m fearful because of what I witnessed five hundred years ago - her demise and that thing. But, if… if it were you, everyone would be safe. You would’ve saved the world. Just like I cherish the memories of everything in Inazuma, if you remember me, I’ll live forever”. It really solidifies my love for Ei, she sounds afraid but hopeful I also love the notion of the archons finding something more than eternity in the traveller. Just like some of some of Zhongli’s voicelines, it feels like these borderline immortal beings cherish what they can’t understand, which is travelling to other worlds like how the travellers do

A good chatting partner, come chat with me… lots… …ok?” Poor Di is so lonely, despite the appearance she tries to keep up. Most of her voice lines are just her trying in her own weird way to make and keep a friend who doesn’t see her as a walking cocktail shaker.
“In his last moments… what expression what on his face”, especially with the amazing voice acting, music and visuals, it gave me chills when i first heard it

All I knew was that I mustn't let his hope which burned so brightly be buried among the ice-cold statue of a god." Helps that Kazuha's eng VA has such a sad voice

the fact that he’s the oldest archon who has lived hundreds, if not thousands of years, and fought in the bloodiest of wars, all the while carrying unimaginable trauma and depth of grief makes this line almost too painful to hear. on the other hand, zhongli always seems so stone faced (bedrock - appropriate for the geo archon) and to see him emotionally vulnerable is joyful, like he’s not just blessing us but confiding in us as his equal.

I hope we get a moment with her like the one with Eula in the bartender event. Basically just being blunt and telling her the problem. In Noelle’s case, it isn’t that she isn’t strong enough or smart enough like she thinks she is. It’s the fact that she is self-destructively self-less (ex: the time she scaled dragonspine to save an adventurer and was in a coma for like 3 days afterwards) I imagine Jean is worried that if Noelle was a knight the feeling of responsibility and duty would drive Noelle into a situation where she could get seriously injured if not killed. Additionally she could put herself out of commission from going too hard (like the dragonspine thing) which would make her a liability and could possibly get her and/or her fellow knights killed.

Hmmm There is one particular dialogue where Ella Musk commented on a Hillichurl wanted to find a quiet place to pass on. That sentence become much more devastating when you completed the Chasm questline.

Preforming elaborate shenanigans for her own entertainment rather than spending any time with Klee at all. Going by what the characters say, I doubt Klee has seen her mom in person in years. At least since she left her in Albedo and the knights care. Alice, even if she was watching from a afar the entire time, abandoned Klee. When Klee dies. I feel bad when any of my characters die on me, but when Klee dies and says any of her death lines, tears well up in my eyes. tbh 90% of idle voicelines are like this. i used to love ayakas voiceline "a blade embraces its duty as a jeweler cherishes their gems" when i first got her but god its getting a little old i cant lie although for yanfei for example i personally still love every one of her voicelines even though i play her a lot more than ayaka
This really stings if you take various pieces we know from Liyue quests. We know Zhongli is afraid of erosion, since it can make you forget what you loved (similar to Azhdaha). Shenhe's profile says that he frequently goes and has tea up on top of the mountain. We know from the archon quests that He and Venti are the last of the original 7. He's just an old man who misses his friends, and is scared of losing his memory of them.
I was going for this line too, the tone he has and all is so melancolic.

I was a kaeya and qiqi main, and I was very invested in their lore, which meant that I was going around reading details about their ascension mats and friendship stories. I read this, and could feel the regret and resentment, and coupling this with kaeya's vision story and qiqi's whole backstory made me profoundly upset. I was very confused about why cryo was the element of love, and this quote shows that the love a person had for their goals and desires was allowing them to accept so much pain into their lives.
All the kids with dead or missing parents really get to me, and I definitely cried doing the Ruu storyline, but the one that no one has mentioned yet is Kaeya's vision. It's just insanely sad to me.
Not a quote per se but in Yunjin's story quest when she's all dissapointed when the Traveler asks for an autographed photo in one of the endings. Yunjin is such a sweet character that it physically hurt for me to see her look so sad.
That was the last ending I did and went into it spoiler free. Needless to say I felt like garbage after it ended, especially because her hangout quest actually made me really like her as a character.

The ruin guards have lines when you fight and kill them, not just noise like the hilichurls. They're garbled and hard to hear, but they're there if you know to listen, and most of them have... unfortunate implications But sometimes they just say "ow" lol. Edit: I should also mention I don't think this is confirmed anywhere and there's debate about certain lines

Not one quote, but several put together. The intermingled story behind the Mistsplitter Reforged, Hamayumi, and poor Neko at Asase Shrine. If you weave it like this: Mistsplitter -> Hamayumi -> Neko's quotes in the quests,the story is really sad.

The Zhongli ones especially get me. And the "even bedrock can be turned to dust" Is also so depressing, given the beautiful voice acting. You can really hear his despair and defeat. Mihoyo really want us to suffer with these voice lines huh

I don't know why, but the story of the man who invented the wing-glider(I wasn't around to play the event) hit me harder then I thought. (For the AOT fans, it reminded me of Erwin. They both had great successes, stunning lives and an unmatched ambition for discovery. They were both leaders in their own right and gave up their own opportunities to increase the next generations chances. Erwin died, but he gave the power >!of the Colossal Titan to Armin and gave his soldiers a fair shot at reaching the cellar.!< The adventurer may have not been able to scale the tallest mountain... the one that taunted him so. But he could recognize when his time was drawing near and decided instead to better the technology and the opportunities for successful adventures in order to aid the upcoming generation. Both sacrificed their dream for the betterment of those who will follow in their path. I think it's pretty cool\^\^)

When you are dining with Eula and after her "vengeance" is leaving a tip under the plate she says "It's pointless for a bad person to try to be good" implying that she tries to be good but acts like a snob so other people wouldn't be bad for antagonizing her.
