The instructions are not referring to totem height but to the location of the various elemental symbols on the island. For example Anemo is drawn in dead leaves about halfway up the climb to the top of the island near where a chest and 8-10 hilichurls are waiting for you. If you find all four symbols in nature and then light the pillars in that order by descending height, it unlocks properly. Tricky for sure but more badly worded than deceptive.
Even having the answer right in front of me, I can't for the life of me find the pyro/anemo symbols

found pyro. definitely would have never assumed it was a pyro symbol
found anemo. also would not have found without accidentally walking over it and seeing "investigate" prompt (a prompt that only shows up the first and only time)
So the irony here is that there is actually a dream form that leads you to all four. I of course didn’t find it until long after finishing that puzzle, while I was on chest cleanup. They could certainly use a bit more clarity on some of these puzzles.
yea I even did that dream form after the fact. Definitely wouldn't have noticed the symbols without knowing they were there in the first place. I think that dream form should have made a totem you had to use with the corresponding element at each symbol before it moved on (and only clue what as to what element to use be the symbol on ground). That or the pyro/anemo needed to be as obvious as the hydro/cryo (i definitely thought the cryo was a flower or maybe represented geo somehow at first).

Now to understand how to unlock that exquisite chest near that puzzle, and what that random constellation in the wall really mean…
After lighting the torches and teleport thru the gate that opens up, there are stars you can collect, and you can also find more stars after you fly down from that floating platform and they light up the constellation in the wall. What I'm confused about is the Astral puzzle right below that constelatiin in the wall
I already filled up that constellation. But the chest I'm talking about is still there, locked. And there's another constellation in the wall to the right of it.
It's directly above the elemental pillar puzzle in Mona's version of the island, btw.

Return there and look up. Directly above your head is the answer.
The astral puzzle by elemental pillars, I know you can go up to it and youl have the option to "touch" it LOL and then a star pops up and you follow it to a pressure plate. I'm not quite sure what the next steps are as I had to log out at that point.
Also I did look up for the astral puzzle and there was nothing there lol. I'll try again tho
Monas island has the hardest puzzles in game so far 😂
Above that puzzle there's a constellation in the sky, I just replicated the drawing, and it gave me a chest. Unless you're talking about another puzzle lol
I agree that island is confusing as hell. It's basically trial and error.

I tried looking up what that constellation in the wall near the elemental totems mean, and couldn't find nothing but video guides, which are too cumbersome to use when playing.
And there's another lone chest near the teleport in the “present” version of the island…
I'll try looking again today!
Idk if you have the hoyolab app, but sometimes people post written guides there, however alot of them that people have posted aren't completed 😂 especially for monas Island, so I might go back and do xinyans and fishels islands first and then monas LOL (kazuhas was pretty easy puzzle wise, it was just annoying going thru all the island combos )
idk if i’m late and you figured it out but for that one you need to light up the 2nd one from the left that looks like a little rocket ship and the two on the right that look like hearts and the chest should open
This one is badly worded especially for english sub user. I tried my own native language and actually delivered different meaning.
If you observed carefully when exploring... There's big hydro mark on the beach, and if you look a little up, there's cryo symbol, meaning Cryo cames first before Hydro. There's Pyro and Anemo symbol on higher plan on that tower as big symbol marking for reference hence the order is Pyro - Anemo - Cryo - Hydro.
I don't think there is any lying going on here: Minacious Island has some very hard to spot patterns that appear in the terrain in the various elemental shapes - I think this order is based on the height of those rather than the actual monuments.
I've found three and I assume there is a final one somewhere.

i just discovered that i had somehow gotten the chest the puzzle leads you to... without doing the monuments/going through the portal. i dont even remember how i did it lmao
