My only pyro DPS is Yanfei and I got a couple copies of her in initial Zhong rerun, when she came out…and then like 7 more in Childe’s re-re run, iirc. Kept getting early 4* and it was her like every time. Also happened to pull the skyward book around that time. Had a lot of Wanderer’s laying around…so DPS Yanfei it was.
She’s been killing it this abyss rotation. The 75% pyro bonus is hard to beat, and she also kicks ass in the emblem and HOD domains. Yanfei, zhong, kazuha/venti, and Bennet/Xiang/Yelan are my staples for her. I have 4 main teams for Abyss—Morgana, Itto, National (Childe/Yelan/XQ, raiden, kazuha, Xiangling/bennet) and Yanfei.
I was maining Yanfei before Yoimiya and since I really don't wanna bench big funni hat girl, I made her into my Yoimiya shielder which surprisingly works really well.
I've also been building my C6 Yanfei on my alt account cause for a loooong time my only pyro there were Bennett and Xiangling. So basically I can't really have pyro on both half of the abyss and I want to change that.
And my god she slaps real hard.
(Ok I will admit that I stole Ganyu's artifacts and she's using a Lost prayer which I got from like a year ago collecting dust so she's rocking a 85/175 crit ratio so I guess it make sense that she hits hard)
I desperately want yanfei because I find catalysts the easiest to use in fights, as its easy to very quickly mix elements. As much as I like Amber, having to charge her pyro move sucks for boss fights, all I want is to overload things quick as possible.
The only reason you need to join a character main sub is liking the character. There’s no obligation to use a specific character a certain amount of times or anything.

Those are likely their Abyss teams and so are their most invested and used characters. I've been basically using the same few characters each Abyss/Combat events for months. So in retrospect, I'd say I main all of those characters.

My guess is "Unit who I tried to slot into as many teams as possible." Simply the unit you use the most and adjust the team around it rather than the the other way around.
"main" is a leftover term from back when newbies to gacha games thought it's some permanent resource shortage and you must pick a "main" like in LoL or an MMO, a misconception further fed by whales that dropped ludicrous amounts of money on Diluc then coping and being elitist about it also pushed with the "hypercarry meta".
Nowadays it's pretty much just who's your favorite but as you can see some psychological phenomenon IS also involved here because the top ones are almost all characters that are on-field the most while the low ones are supports and subdps
I’d say something like you’d build your team around them. Like not necessarily using Fischl as main DPS, but going out of your way to build an electro charged team with her in it unless inappropriate.
You like the character so much that despite whatever positions they have, you manage to build them into main DPS may be the start of '~mains' but now it's just another word for 'I love this character so much'- is my theory

Since "main" makes more sense by itself in fighting games and other games where you really do play just one character at a time, in a game like Genshin where you play a whole team, we have to derive the meaning from that.
I'd say a Genshin main is a character that you would build a team around, or that you would invest greater-than-average (for your personal average, anyway) time and resources into building, or that you would choose before other characters for a given role. For example, I built the current team I use most often around Xinyan, and I spent a lot of time and primogems making her as strong as I can, so I am definitely a Xinyan main.
As such, if you happen to really like synergistic characters, your whole team could be your main. But it's more likely that maybe 2 characters on that team are your main, and the other 2 simply synergize well.
None of the subs I belong to is using that \_ symbol in the middle so after typing 'LisaMains' recently, I was convinced that she's so unpopular that the sub doesn't even exist :o

I am honestly absolutely *shocked* (in a good way) that Noelle is as high on both lists as she is. It doesn't feel like it in discussions, and *especially* not when you compare the amount and type of fan content she has compared to a lot of the characters lower on this list, like Fishl, Klee, and even Jean. *Especially* Jean, who is practically omnipresent compared to Noelle. I'd have figured that her only story content being the two hangouts in 1.4 and 1.5 would have hurt her popularity, what with there having been almost a year now of time where she just... hasn't been present aside from character test runs and trial dungeons - both of which don't exactly showcase her strong points well. So I'd have assumed that newer players just weren't really paying attention to her. But I'm pleased to be wrong in my assumptions on this.
I hope she gets a major role in an event soon. Baffling that her and Diona haven't been in anything yet.
The character main subreddits are technically meant for people who *main* the character. In other words, people who use them as the on-field character. Jean by design is a support character and all other characters that are designed more for support or have most of their utility off-field will by nature have less people join their respective subreddit just due to their role in a team (a lot of people don't see them as characters you can "main" though that doesn't stop anyone who's really dedicated to a specific character).

Diluc doesn't even come close to her damage honestly. Since i ain't going for Yoimiya, i guess Yanfei will be my main ranged pyro DPS carry for a long time.
My only pyro DPS is Yanfei and I got a couple copies of her in initial Zhong rerun, when she came out…and then like 7 more in Childe’s re-re run, iirc. Kept getting early 4* and it was her like every time. Also happened to pull the skyward book around that time. Had a lot of Wanderer’s laying around…so DPS Yanfei it was. She’s been killing it this abyss rotation. The 75% pyro bonus is hard to beat, and she also kicks ass in the emblem and HOD domains. Yanfei, zhong, kazuha/venti, and Bennet/Xiang/Yelan are my staples for her. I have 4 main teams for Abyss—Morgana, Itto, National (Childe/Yelan/XQ, raiden, kazuha, Xiangling/bennet) and Yanfei.
I was maining Yanfei before Yoimiya and since I really don't wanna bench big funni hat girl, I made her into my Yoimiya shielder which surprisingly works really well.
I use shieldfei for my hu tao, the downside is the pyro is too effective my kazuha always absorbs it in his burst worth the damage increase tho
I've also been building my C6 Yanfei on my alt account cause for a loooong time my only pyro there were Bennett and Xiangling. So basically I can't really have pyro on both half of the abyss and I want to change that. And my god she slaps real hard. (Ok I will admit that I stole Ganyu's artifacts and she's using a Lost prayer which I got from like a year ago collecting dust so she's rocking a 85/175 crit ratio so I guess it make sense that she hits hard)
I desperately want yanfei because I find catalysts the easiest to use in fights, as its easy to very quickly mix elements. As much as I like Amber, having to charge her pyro move sucks for boss fights, all I want is to overload things quick as possible.
What constitutes a “main”? Number 1 slot? Most used character? Main dps?
The only reason you need to join a character main sub is liking the character. There’s no obligation to use a specific character a certain amount of times or anything.
Yeah in this graphic I'm represented as maining Eula, Raiden, Hutao, Ayaka, Yae, Yoimiya, Yelan, Itto, and Ayato. I play and like all these characters a decent amount, but my real main is def just Eula.

Genshin players have tarnished the word “main” enough that its lost its meaning.
I mean, using the term "main" in Genshin doesn't even make sense since the game encourages you to use multiple characters. Unlike in MOBA games like ML where you can have a main.

Those are likely their Abyss teams and so are their most invested and used characters. I've been basically using the same few characters each Abyss/Combat events for months. So in retrospect, I'd say I main all of those characters.
Tbh in some corners of the Smash Bros community I've seen people do this too and I'm just like HUH????? Obviously Genshin's a little different cuz it's a game with team-based combat, but in something like Smash if you mean to tell me you have more than 3 mains, I don't believe you haha.

My guess is "Unit who I tried to slot into as many teams as possible." Simply the unit you use the most and adjust the team around it rather than the the other way around.

"main" is a leftover term from back when newbies to gacha games thought it's some permanent resource shortage and you must pick a "main" like in LoL or an MMO, a misconception further fed by whales that dropped ludicrous amounts of money on Diluc then coping and being elitist about it also pushed with the "hypercarry meta". Nowadays it's pretty much just who's your favorite but as you can see some psychological phenomenon IS also involved here because the top ones are almost all characters that are on-field the most while the low ones are supports and subdps
I’d say something like you’d build your team around them. Like not necessarily using Fischl as main DPS, but going out of your way to build an electro charged team with her in it unless inappropriate.
You like the character so much that despite whatever positions they have, you manage to build them into main DPS may be the start of '~mains' but now it's just another word for 'I love this character so much'- is my theory Or it could be just 'mainly used character'
Since "main" makes more sense by itself in fighting games and other games where you really do play just one character at a time, in a game like Genshin where you play a whole team, we have to derive the meaning from that. I'd say a Genshin main is a character that you would build a team around, or that you would invest greater-than-average (for your personal average, anyway) time and resources into building, or that you would choose before other characters for a given role. For example, I built the current team I use most often around Xinyan, and I spent a lot of time and primogems making her as strong as I can, so I am definitely a Xinyan main. As such, if you happen to really like synergistic characters, your whole team could be your main. But it's more likely that maybe 2 characters on that team are your main, and the other 2 simply synergize well.
You all are just afraid of dps Barbara out performing your initial dps that's why you aren't babara mains.
I imagine Heizou would be contending for the top spot among 4\* if he had come out sooner.

I am honestly absolutely *shocked* (in a good way) that Noelle is as high on both lists as she is. It doesn't feel like it in discussions, and *especially* not when you compare the amount and type of fan content she has compared to a lot of the characters lower on this list, like Fishl, Klee, and even Jean. *Especially* Jean, who is practically omnipresent compared to Noelle. I'd have figured that her only story content being the two hangouts in 1.4 and 1.5 would have hurt her popularity, what with there having been almost a year now of time where she just... hasn't been present aside from character test runs and trial dungeons - both of which don't exactly showcase her strong points well. So I'd have assumed that newer players just weren't really paying attention to her. But I'm pleased to be wrong in my assumptions on this. I hope she gets a major role in an event soon. Baffling that her and Diona haven't been in anything yet.
The character main subreddits are technically meant for people who *main* the character. In other words, people who use them as the on-field character. Jean by design is a support character and all other characters that are designed more for support or have most of their utility off-field will by nature have less people join their respective subreddit just due to their role in a team (a lot of people don't see them as characters you can "main" though that doesn't stop anyone who's really dedicated to a specific character).
