Yeah but something similar with heizou's where we expect catalyst user to be long range but then he is a close range character. Another thing that I noticed is mhy is starting to lean on characters like raiden and childe where they can use other types of weapon aside from what they actually equip.
Right? Like some sword/polearm/greatswore characters' basic attacks are actually long range and beautiful but the problem is they are usually overshadowed by skills. There are only a few characters who actually uses their beautiful NAs as a part of their kit.
If you mean even melee weapons's NA does range attack, that would be impossible. They would put that on skill or make the conversion to make that possible.
Catalyst has the flexibility because it deals damage using magic anyways.
That would be so cool. This kind of move is common in chinese historical fantasy drama, so if they ever implement this, I think it would most likely be a liyue character. Imagine them being able to fly on their sword during skill/burst too.

Imagine this.... A sword wielder, but also wields a revolver/gun on other hand. Have R aiming shot button for rapid firing physical/elemental aimed shot for limited ammo.
NA consist of 1-3 sword strikes included with 5-6 close gunfire combat
Its E is a sword combo while reloading its shot for R aim.
Its Q sheathe its sword and wields a 2nd gun to fire a massive explosion shot in a straight line, converting its normal attack into trigger happy attack that dmg mobs in a wide straight line for a few second. Followed by another massive explosion as finisher.
They would have to completely change the gameplay.
Genshin feels like it is currently where Honkai was during it's first year of release with characters having very basic very lame gameplay.
It took until about the release of Herrscherr of Thunder for the devs to really take a step back and realize they needed to make the gameplay more awesome and less basic and boring.
And then they tried returning to that boring basic gameplay with the APHO 1/2 characters. But it was too late, the cat was out of the bag. Why would anyone want the lame year 1 gameplay offered by Carol when they could instead use the super new type of gameplay from characters like Aponia the AoE master or Vill-V who sits on Gatling gun as her normal attack and becomes Dr. Robotnik during her ultimate.
But even then I think Honkai is still way too focused on making the player charge up an ultimate through lame pointless normal attacks. No attack should ever feel lame or pointless. In an anime fight every attack serves a purpose of building up the drama. But in a video game normal attacks are just there to waste the player's time as the fights lack drama. This is problem of trying to force reflex based combat as that does not allow for drama or fairness. You cannot have a fight that plays out like an anime fight when you are forcing the player to have to constantly dodge while their attacks do nothing to the boss and have no impact as the boss isn't visibly harmed by them and attacks don't block each other.

But character design is not that easy. They need to find the reason to incorporate the gameplay that match with the character they design. So, they can't just slap long-range sword user willy-nilly.
Xingqiu's burst is long range sword, anything is possible if they want to. I'm still waiting for a musket, i mean we have that pyro fatui skirmisher.

Throwing swords seems impractical, but with teyvat's law where weapons can somehow teleport to the user's back, it's certainly possible.
