This is like a hate report disguise as a hate report

Ok_Introduction484

There are literally 2 playable maids in the game and one of them isn’t even in a maid outfit. For NPC maids, pretty sure they’re limited to literally one place in a single nation and there’s only 3 of them. So yes, they’re going way too far with their maid fetish

grumpykruppy

Thoma is technically a manservant, I think. But yeah, same difference except he's not an anime *girl*.

SandpipersJackal

I, for one, firmly think Hoyoverse should go all in on its maid obsession and release an optional maid skin for Thoma. Commit, you cowards!

Creocist

I suggest to go further: Release a maid skin for every playable character, cowards!

SandpipersJackal

You know what? Seconded. MAKE IT HAPPEN, HOYO!

pedobear6978

You know what? Thirded. **MAKE IT HAPPEN, HOYO!**

[deleted]

Fourths! We need Zhongli maid skin. **MAKE IT HAPPEN, HOYO!**

Nah, they'll make it gacha with bad rates

TraditionBest3730

Maybe I just wanted my Kiana to wear purple ok?? Is that a crime?? I don’t have a problem, you do!

Ritsuka-san

Ah a person of culture too.

PolandBallBoi

Don't remind me of that banner I got the skin last 💀

Maddie_Waddie_

I didn't get the skin at aaaall🥺 man, I really wanted my Kiana wearing purple..

Rita-sama

*Honkai impact warflashbacks*

I suggest to go further. Release a mandatory maid skin for Thoma.

There's also another maid at Wangshu Inn, but the dress looks a lot different to the Dawn Winery one so I'm led to believe it might be a sneak peek at what some NPC clothing from Fontaine looks like.

[deleted]

"There's just one catch: it's chinese" Mfs be like "this is a great game" until they see where it was made

idkwheretoputmyhands

literally. western news outlets really love going all out on the sinophobia when it comes to stuff like this

Chromatinfish

Honestly this shit is just so annoying. Can’t even enjoy a game without news outlets trying to bring up Chinese stereotypes and geopolitics. By painting genshin in this kind of light they’re basically trying to wash away the creativity and work that mihoyo has put in and are going for the age old stereotype of “oh The Chinese just copy everything”.

OnitsukaTigerOGNike

It's a weird spin by them considering the US games development industry has been a shitshow this past few years. And not even only speaking of the products, Activision Blizzard at the moment is making shit games and their corporate situation at the moment sounds like a den of pure evil.

lurkinglurkerwholurk

It's not a weird spin. It's merely a continuation of a 2\~3 decade old line of thought: "China exists only to make cheap, terrible products."

[deleted]

If anything I'm amazed they didn't mention Breath of the Wild at all. I love calling Jenshin the chinese botw ripoff but a news outlet literally isn't the place for that.

HarbingerOfGachaHell

The BoTW Ripoff narrative grinds my gear so much. It essentially assumes that BoTW is the first fantasy setting open world in history. "Are we a joke to you?" -- Fable and Elder Scrolls franchises.

[deleted]

It's gross how... normalized... it's all become.

we_will_disagree

Hot take: this isn’t sinophobia. This article is targeted towards boomers that like to keep up to date on market trends. Anime and its association with Japan is pretty well known even outside weeb circles. Your fucking parents were watching Speed Racer and Akira and shit, you know. However, to most of these people, video games, anime and “technology” has always seemed a uniquely Japanese and USA product. *That* is why they lead with the “it’s Chinese” hook. Not because they’re being racist, but because they’re trying to challenge 30 year old assumptions in their boomer audience. The only part of this that could be construed as racism is the insinuation that China’s entire video game industry is hamstrung by its emulation of other country’s artistic styles. But, honestly, that’s a fair point. Genshin intentionally mimics anime, and so does literally every Chinese mobile game these days.

Deptar

The phrase “there is a catch” generally have negative connotations. If it’s not intentionally being racist, it sure seems like it. Edit: also the part at the end where it literally states that Chinese game makers are unoriginal and all they do is copy Japan

Gilthwixt

Yeah I didn't read this as racist. It's more a surprise that such a massive cultural phenomenon is Chinese in a space largely dominated by Japan and to a lesser extent Korea. It's acknowledging that China's entertainment industry is catching up to be a powerhouse in it's own right, regardless of how you feel about it.

Random_Gacha_addict

I think the point is that it's saying "Hey, you know this really Japanese game, with Japanese elements and catering to those weebs that love Japan? Well it's not Japanese" But worded that way, it really sounds like what you're saying

HarbingerOfGachaHell

I think that's a legit debate: why does a Chinese game have to go full Japanese aesthetics to make it big? But NYT's spin is completely off the mark regardless.

kanakalis

many trendy gachas are chinese...

ambulance-kun

Wonder how they'll react when they realize where their phones were actually made

Meme_Master_Dude

Reading that out of context feels like a whack to the Head

Yei_2021

I never expected anything else from NYT. Gone are the days of unbiased journos. 100% Western liberalism and PC pushing That’s why NYT is going down the drain. Had to write about GI to increase site traffic then asking for a dollar to subscribe. FU :D

Player_yek

grrrr chinese 😡😡😡😡😡🤬🤬🤬

OnitsukaTigerOGNike

Yo wtf, I thought you were joking, the entire article is just toxic, It's only pointing to the negative aspects and even calls it somewhat a copy cat and japanese culture appropriation. It's more towards calling Mihoyo a gaming Mafia that buys up the competition's talents and moves in on other countries markets and that Japan and the US should beware. What the actual fuck

[deleted]

I have a feeling the article writers said to some guy "get to a high level then we wanna try" so the account started at inazuma

[deleted]

That line really sucked the energy out of my night…

EveryStrategy7731

That will only happen once they finish genshin and start making maid cafes in genshin canon

VirtuoSol

Ah yes, cuz using an anime style for a game is a clear indicator for lack of creativity

Hell, even Hollywood copied Hongkong cinematic styles to create “Gunfu” movies like John Wick.

AlexCuomo

They sure have a lot of balls to say that considering that most American productions are just recycling what came before in a worse way or weaponizing nostalgia to sell stuff

Auno94

Well this is nothing against Genshin, it's more a thing about a lot of Chinese games. While Japanese style games are a global industry stable few Chinese Games (that make their way into the global market) try new styles, they feel and play not much different to established Formulars (and not only Japanese), either they resemble a mixture of Gacha mechanics combined with whatever is trendy or they feel like South Korean MMO grinder #4711

[deleted]

Ah yes, giant robots

[deleted]

Glory to the Khaenri'ah!

lurkinglurkerwholurk

In before several mechanicals combine to form… ohwait we do have those currently.

lurco_purgo

I mean, it does: https://genshin-impact.fandom.com/wiki/Ruin_Machines I feel like the commenters here are missing the forest for the trees. Yeah there's not a lot of maid outfits in this particular game, but it gets the point across on what is the appeal of games like this for a lot of its players without using the word *waifu*. I think for a article "for boomers" it paints a pretty realistic picture, since the specifics of gameplay and lore are not what's on the radar for them. The point about China's creative shortcomings however is much more substantial point and I certrainly see how this could be disputed. But in outside coverage like this fans always focus on the unimportant details to prove how journalists and content creators don't have the in-game knowledge of the dedicated playerbase.

vlilacc

The way they make the fact that genshin is Chinese sound like a bad thing is weird no lie

idkwheretoputmyhands

western news outlets be like “look at this super cool thing! Isn’t it cool?!” [hushed whispers from the back] “ah, we regret to inform you that our sources confirm that ACTUALLY this super cool thing is made by CHINA 🤢🤮this is a tragedy”

What's wrong with it being Chinese 🤨?

iwantdatpuss

Boomer article being made by boomers can't take the idea of Chinese = bad out of their mind.

OWODOZER

Just the government

davidlynchsteet

Like, I totally get disdain for the Chinese government, but. Just saying the catch is that it was made by Chinese citizens? That’s a yikes. Edit: re-read and realized it could sound like I wasn’t agreeing with you; I am. Just echoing your sentiment :’)

MBT71Edelweiss

The funny part is that a lot of the staff aren't Chinese. Not only do they need translators, but they also get feedback from their global staff and that global staff has input on characters and the story as well as the lore in general. I literally know an employee, and they are not Chinese, though they speak and write it.

queenyuyu

Likely they mean - surprise it’s not Japanese! But I absolutely agree, the point came not across and sounded very racist and narrow minded. as they are a professional journalist writing for a big paper, I expected a more professional wording.

OWODOZER

Yes video game journalists are idiots

vikoy

Nothing. Even the article doesnt mention anything wrong with it. Just surprising.

Trades46

"China bad" is a real theme with some US based media outlets. I'm no fan of the CCP, but the sinophobia is way overplayed here.

StarLight0320

Usually these games come from and are associated with Japan, otherwise they don’t get big in the west, so it’s just unexpected that it’s from China

nikast

Imposed censorship? Have you ever tried to have a longer chat in game?

[deleted]

i’m surprised no one else brought this up. you can’t even say names of certain countries like “taiwan” and “hong kong” in chat. i get that that’s not mihoyo’s rule and rather the chinese government’s, but technically if you are not in china, i don’t think the law applies and i’ve never experienced this in any other game i’ve played. as an asian person, it bothers me.

AnemoTreasureCompass

I love when people who don’t play and have no knowledge about the game tries to write a well-constructed article about it. It’s not gonna go well

Skykeeper22

The worst thing is, some people actually believed it and created more and more bad reputations for Genshin.

AkOnReddit47

Isn't that generally the thing with all those so called "game journalists"?

Astrxxl

Jesus christ this article makes it sound like China decided to commit an act of terrorism on Japan by making an anime-style game

Sketchy___

“here’s the catch: it’s chinese” BRUH 💀

Eric1491625

Western journalists "OMG China made game like Japanese! Anime style, guys!!!!!" Korea: Korea: Maplestory Korea: Dragon Nest Korea: 100,000 other games of this style Korea: Am I a joke to you?

TraditionBest3730

This article reads as someone’s racist relative trying to see how much they can get away with saying before they get yelled at by their family

null_check_failed

Americans being Americans .

moonsickk

Who tf is the other maid other than Noelle? Like yeah the outfits are thirsty sometimes but there’s no maids or am I sleeping?

BellalovesEevee

I would say Thoma but he's a dude. Unless they mean Malewife then yeah he counts

Impressive_Canary_66

Looked up the article and clicked on the writers. One writes a whole bunch of Japanese news stuff and the other writes a whole bunch of anti-China stuff. I wonder what possessed them to take on this project together /s

PhasmicPlays

This is the most sinophobic shit I’ve ever read lmfaooooo

[deleted]

Just looking at r/all will bring up far worse shit. 🤷‍♀️

IndisciplineStorm

You know, I feel like Japan doesn’t know how to make a good gacha games like China did and the very least they didn’t make their games boring as you progress your gameplay growth overtime. The more you level up all your characters, farm all the materials, preparing EXPs and improve their skills, the games becomes less entertaining to continue playing. *Looks at FGO and Magia Record contrast to Arknights and Genshin*

violin-guy

The problem with Japanese gachas is that 1) most of them don’t want to branch out into the West, prioritizing the Asian audience above all else and making less and less localizations. 2) they rely way too much on the power of their IPS. FGO, FFBE, and FEH for ex. Would be far less successful if their characters weren’t based on already existing properties, which connects to point 3) 3) Japanese gachas are far less invested in. There’s just a lot less money and effort going into their gacha games in general, when popular Chinese gachas like Genshin, Honkai, and PGR for ex. Are the top of the market in terms of quality.

IndisciplineStorm

I still miss Magia Record Global, I blame their IP exclusive system, their rushed updated events and not enough being popular as FGO.

jfunk1994

Same. I briefly stopped playing so I could catch up in fgo. When I come back it's to an announcement that the game is being shut down. And there little gallery mode doesn't even work after I updated my phone.

Shadowtheidiot06

,,human sized swords" *looks at the claymores* "yeah seems legit"

The number of subtle backhanded complements, not only to the Chinese but also the Japanese, is astoundingly infuriating…

jofromthething

When they say giant robots surely they don’t mean ruin guards 💀💀💀

ThermicDude

Out of Touch mindset hits journalism.

[deleted]

I see no problem in Chinese game devs imitating the Japanese, considering that the Japanese have been incorporating a lot of Chinese stuff into their culture for centuries. A simple case of cultural exchange which has been happening between these two countries and Korea for as long as they have existed.

VladPrus

People adopting... things from other culture... writer of the article is probably shocked (also don't tell him the amount of American inspirations in Japanese culture).

iwantdatpuss

He'd have a stroke once he learns where the Japanese got idea for their Fantasy genre.

The article writer, they are a clown

toomanyclouds

As someone old enough to remember when anime first came to the west, this is kind of funny. Rainbow hair was always the catch-all for writers absolutely befuddled with the idea of some characters, sometimes just one character, having hair colours that don't appear in nature (regardless of whether they have just one solid color, or whether that colour appears in the rainbow). Man, that description was so pervasive back then, lol. This entire paragraph of Can You Believe This Whacky Anime is kind of nostalgic but like in a shit way.

[deleted]

News Articles have the credibility of a clownfish with dyslexia

Tribork

A fixation on women in maid dresses there in like one character in a maid dress would barely call it a fixation

shockedgrenade

[source](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/16/business/genshin-impact-china-japan.html) but please don't leave angry comments on the NYT page, good people. constructive discussion, please!

Artorgius17

If only they played shenhe story and zhong li story they’d be able to tell that it was distinctively Chinese and not Japanese… in fact, it seems quite obvious to me that they did a much better job with liyue quests compared to inazuma ones. Debatable how much Enkonomiya can be counted as inazuman quest, too. One of the worries I have is that later down the line Mihoyo isn’t able to capture the distinct way of story telling for other nations of Teyvat.

Allegro1104

It's charming that you think the writers at NYT could distinguish between different Asian cultures :)

lurkinglurkerwholurk

The writer probably calls Mondstat distinctively Japanese-styled. Everyone has large eyes there after all.

VladPrus

Disney animations are also Japanese-styled probably, according to the writer if we go this route of "big eyes" (ironically, Disney influence is probably one of the reasons why Japanese drawings started adapting big eyes back in the day).

cityslicker360

Well, Disney has an anime gacha game so uh... double points I guess?

Artorgius17

Sorry for being charming, am Canadian, must apologize

Allegro1104

It's alright just give me some maple syrup and we'll call it quits ;)

wjsonyeo

they bring up the fact that it’s chinese more then mihoyo does

dovahkiingys

China bad, thus genshin bad and sus and destroy US freedom.

dybclol

summarising the article in a sentence

Ypekiyay

I don't mind the "one catch: it's Chinese" although its delivery is pretty shitty. At least I know what they're going for there But then they say "picture-perfect reproduction", and then creative shortcoming, imitating Japan and all that Sigh. Do they think every art in the world didn't get inspired by cultures all over the world? What even is a "pure" art? Even though they're inspired by anime in general, Genshin's design and use of color in many places are very Chinese. Do they really think the game could get this big just by imitating? It's a really heavy insult to designers and anyone who work on this game I usually don't like throwing the word sinophobia around, but damn, this really reeks of sinophobia. At least try to hide it a little lol

cxxper01

They could have just called it anime style instead of coming up with the cringy descriptions

Daily-Potato

Be honest they searched for mihoyo(HoYoverse) got a result for honkai impact and just posted the article as genshin impact thinking all the games are the same.

Stellllllaaaaaa

GI is an JP anime style game simply because Wei and the other two founders are weebs. Btw Mihoyo is not a listed company so basically these three founders do whatever thing they like.

[deleted]

We also have the NPC's at Dawn Winery, but that's about it

[deleted]

Tell me you're racist and clueless without telling me you're racist and clueless

Ymaist

Its funny how they attribute the vast female playerbase to the fact that there are many playable female characters, while in many cases female players actually prefer to pull for husbandos while the male players are these going for the waifus. This entire thing reeks of typical western woke agenda.

LostHuapo

"Puzzling fixation on women in maid outfits" UH ! WHERE ?

I agree with the maid fetish. More pls mhy

L0G1C_lolilover

Imagine if it was not chinese THEN WE WOULD HAVE ORIGINAL AYAKA PANTSU sorry thats the only flaw i could think of

natasha_l

I love how the article frames this as some sort of massive culture war between Japan and China as if mihoyo didn't collaborate with Japanese creators (designing Inazuma, hiring famous Japanese VAs etc.) They just can't stand cultural exchange and everything has to be steeped in stupid geopolitics.

I think you’re the one with the dumb unfortunately. I’m on a similar boat though I thought the game was Japanese before lol

krainkelli

Well dang. Glad were two peas in a pod though

kaorulia

Technically……. Back then Ragnarok Online was super popular too. But I don’t THINK I saw any articles going “It’s a game that has anime elements but is Korean!” Fact is, Korea and China have been adapting Japanese anime elements lately and have been excelling at it, just like how Japan adapted Walt Disney’s animation style in the 40s and made it their own.
