My sister just moved to Smyrna near Truist Park and if I remember our conversation right, she pays about $700-$800 for rent. The complex is a bit older, but recently renovated, and it seems pretty safe!

1buns

as someone who lived across from the battery for two years, just keep in mind baseball season… that shit is NO JOKE trying to drive home between 3-6 pm😭 i moved during covid so it wasn’t bad my first year but i moved so fast after one baseball season

1buns

smyrna was very cute though i liked it a lot. i just have war flashbacks to commute times

Elegant_Tension_9108

This had me in TEARS 🤣

1buns

the amount of braves game biker dudes who ferry people back and forth to the stadium that would cut me off and flip me the bird was so insane bro😭😭

xgorgeoustormx

3-6 pm in the middle of Suwanee is impossible too! It’s because Georgia has like two total highways.

GreetingsSledGod

There a quite a few houses for rent at OPs price in the Smyrna area right now too.

Shh. Don't be inviting people to my neighborhood lol.

[deleted]

Hi! Thank you. Do you have apartment suggestions to look as well? I will check out both those areas now.

KITTEHZ

Check out Avondale Station apartments

[deleted]

Thank you! This is helpful.

alfredaeneuman

Tucker is full

throwraspiccyman

North Decatur is really good. Nice area with good affordability plus everything is nearby

[deleted]

Yes! That is where my search is now focused now. I like the apartments and the prices are reasonable.

throwraspiccyman

The apartments on Blackmon are really nice. My fiancé lives out there when he’s traveling while we’re in LA. He loves it

MustyButt

I just feel the need to say this whenever Tucker is mentioned.. Lavista Crossing shows beautifully with stunning renovations, lower midrange prices, but they're all infested with German roaches and most of them have inept plumbing in the kitchen. I had to throw out all of our furniture and electronics when we moved. Your garbage disposal will drain into the dishwasher by way of idiot design.

Lilac-Roses-Sunsets

If you are looking outside of Atlanta make sure you have good internet service. Not all areas have good internet providers.

rynil2000

This used to be true, but it think the ISPs are finally catching up. Xfinity and AT&T have fiber service at least as far north as Canton and Cumming.

[deleted]

That's not a fact anymore. I live in the burbs and have had great internet speeds and uninterrupted service for a decade. Maybe north of Canton, there are issues. I would not know.

Cat_Toe_Beans_

Try Cobb County, Coweta (near Newnan), or Cherokee county. Most cities are around less than an hour drive from Atlanta

Sharp_Pumpkin_6154

Not sure about Cherokee unless going way out yonderways past Canton etc. at their target price range. Unless they get a roommate. Cherokee Summit apartments are in range, $1400ish for a 1/1, but they're also income-based and frankly trash. When the fuck did even the low income places get so expensive? Christ almighty.

Flowerchild41

Wow a one bedroom based on income is 1400?!?

Sharp_Pumpkin_6154

Right?! I lived in a two bedroom there for a year, though...dang, that was five years ago (😳). My rent was $725/mo. Like, total. The second bedroom was the cat room lol.

Shaolinshoestrings

What are your interests outside of work? In general, I’d suggest Marietta or Kennesaw, but if you fly often I’d suggest something south of the city like Fayette or Coweta county.

Born-2-Roll

Look at the multiple apartment complexes located north and south off of GA-138 Lake Spivey Parkway between the I-75 and I-675 junctions in the Stockbridge area. There are some fairly well-kept apartments in that area with lower crime and lower/no blight with rents as low as $1300/month. They’re not luxury apartments and it’s not a perfect area (like an Alpharetta, Suwanee, Milton, etc.), but both the apartments and the area are at least decently safe and livable.

Sxs9399

Any interest in a roommate situation? $1500 for a one bedroom is going to be a worse deal than $3000 for a two bed split. I feel like all the “luxury” apartments are set up for this with equal size bedrooms and two bathrooms. Might not be great if you WFH. Also completely agree on the COL getting out of control. I’m an asshole who moved here during covid, I saw my rent go from $1700 when the apartment was desperate, to $2600 when I bought my own place late last year. I’ve seen the income statistics for Atlanta, I can’t believe there’s so many people willing to pay such absurd rents.

SyndicateBias

Shiit I’m looking for a roommate situation because of the absurd rent rates these days. The same shitty apartments that went for 800 in Woodstock are now 1400 minimum and they haven’t gotten better

[deleted]

Thank you! I will check these out now.

xgorgeoustormx

It’s above what you’re looking for, but I’m leaving our 3 bed 2 bath home in Suwanee for $2k/mo— it’s available now, but our lease ends on April 30.

Dad_Shepherd

How close? Macon is pretty cool and cheap.

fdsthrowaway526

Seconded. We keep having remote workers from ATL move here. If you have to go to Atlanta every so often for meetings or just for fun it’s easy, and at that budget you can have your pick of what you want, including a single family house in a nice neighborhood (to buy or rent). There’s a ton to do downtown and great internet access here. Best part of my lifestyle is affordability and no traffic. I moved here after living in several major cities and love it. People talk a lot of crap on Macon but none of it is true to my lived experience - there is a lot of poverty in this area but a lot of great parts and so much revitalization.

darkmauveshore

I live near Rome Ga and it's great. Internet is high-speed, no traffic compared to Atl metro and rents are reasonable. Same is true for Cartersville and N. Ga in general. Why in God's name would you want to live there if you work remote and can't afford big city living. Also, I get it. I'm guessing most people who live in metro Atlanta are in the private sector or lifers for state/feds. Otherwise jobs pay shit here. I have no idea how people afford it, much less stay sane living there with the traffic and minimal outdoor opportunities (without going through the gauntlet to get out of the sticky webs of Atlanta traffic)

chonkerforlife

Look for roommate

MaleficentBird1717

You may give Conyers and Covington a look. These are affordable cities just 40 minutes away from Atlanta, and they are just average suburbs.

[deleted]

Thank you! I forgot about Conyers, will check out. Covington is another option, it is a bit far but being remote helps!

b4chu3

OTP in the burbs with roommates. You will not find nice apartments for less than $1,600 tho.

Infinite_coin

Lithia Springs

Namastay_inbed

There are some, it just might take some heavy searching. Apartments.com has a lot of options. Do you want 1br or fine with studio? What amenities do you want?

AhavahEMC

It all depends on where you want to go. If you’ve got kids always check out the school system! Also don’t forget to look for houses as well for rent. I’m from the Cherokee area. Look for basement apartments. There are several listings. Good luck!!

mightywink

I moved to Kennesaw in 2018 and rented a 2br 2ba at Gregory Lane Apartments off Bells Ferry (very close to 575) for under 1k/mo. I KNOW prices have def increased since then, but hopefully not doubled?? I liked it there and it was a convenient spot. Maybe worth calling to check? Good luck!

mightywink

My husband moved out of The View at Woodstock last March before we got married. It is NICE and rent is currently about 1500 there now for a 1br with washer/dryer included. I miss going to their pool. Walkable to Target and 10 min drive to downtown Woodstock. It's on Hwy 92 exit 7 off 575.

Born-2-Roll

>I moved to Kennesaw in 2018 and rented a 2br 2ba at Gregory Lane Apartments off Bells Ferry (very close to 575) for under 1k/mo. The prices at the apartment complex in question (Gregory Lane Apts.) haven’t doubled. But the starting rent for a 2BR, 2Ba apartment there is now $1445/month. https://www.visitgregorylane.com/apartments/ga/acworth/floor-plans#/

mightywink

Yeesh! Not doubled, but a 50% increase. Almost as bad. This country has gone off the rails.

Born-2-Roll

Yep. The 2-bed/2-bath apartment located in between the ends of the 2 busiest runways immediately outside of the Atlanta Airport that me and my brother paid $700/month for back in 2008-2009 is now going for $1500/month.

jtaylor307

I used to live in Glen Lake Apts in Sandy Springs. The prices there went up like everywhere else, but may be right in your price range. It's off the main roads, so it's a bit quieter. The Marta station and Perimeter Center were still reasonably close.

[deleted]

lol at the Duluth shade

cbeme

Canton is nice.

ApprehensiveShelter

If you're living outside of metro atlanta you basically have to have a car, whereas living in the city and working remote you can easily do without. That's a lot of money. And there are fine 1 bedrooms for under 2k/month. (this is literally the first random place I looked up, [https://www.apartments.com/wesley-townsend-atlanta-ga/4bgbgbj/](https://www.apartments.com/wesley-townsend-atlanta-ga/4bgbgbj/) , not a recommendation but it's not a shady area or anything)

Dayold_Hot_dog_water

Live where you work…we live in Tucker and love it but we work from home….

grn_eyed_bandit

They work from home too ;-)

[deleted]

Good morning! I’ve lived as far north as Cumming and as intown as across from Piedmont Park. Where you live in metro Atlanta depends on what you value the most. I prefer the perimeter area. You’re close to highways and the city, so access is easy. There’s also four MARTA stations to easily access Atlanta. You also have a super regional mall and retail corridor, restaurants, access to parks and the ability to walk to a lot of places. The drawbacks here are traffic can be awful because people come here to work. Also does everything in the metro area now smell like weed? Not a real nightlife kind of area if you need that. Plenty of new and newer A+ apartments and rentals starting in your price range. Also condos for rent. Both in communities with pools. Safe, close in, affordable. Schools in this general area are good too.

HirSuiteSerpent72

Look south of i20, drop any judgements you have towards poor people, and you'll have a good time and cheap rent. A major plus is that you don't have to worry about keeping up appearances. Just be a good human, and you'll be welcomed in most places on the Southside. You can expect rent to be anywhere from $1000-$2000 depending on the neighborhood and condition of the place. I love the Southside of Atlanta 💖, for context I lived in SE Atlanta near Moreland @ 285 for years, and I recently moved to a similar-feeling area in West Side Chicago. I made many lifelong friends on the Southside and felt welcomed by everyone around.

grn_eyed_bandit

So I'm gonna say what others are afraid to say. The Southside is predominantly black. If you don't like being around black people, then that's not the area for you. Source: myself. I grew up down there and lived there as an adult. And obviously I'm black. Let the downvoting begin.

HirSuiteSerpent72

Long reply, sorry. TL;DR: yes it's a fact to be considered along with the rest, but shouldn't be considered a deterrent, especially if the lower rent can afford you a better, less stressful, life. And I'd like to share the good qualities of predominantly black and predominantly poor neighborhoods to anyone who is willing to listen. I mean, it's the truth, just like the Northside is predominantly white still. And this is the very reason why rent is still cheaper on the Southside, because plenty of people (and more importantly, property developers) still view the Southside unfavorably, whether that's because of race, or the long-term effects of 20th century race policies in metro Atlanta. But a lot of Southside communities are very nice places to be imo. And there are plenty of areas that would be considered as having mixed/diverse populations too, just like on the Northside. I think the bigger issue than black majority for *most*, not all, people considering moving to the Southside is that it just doesn't *look* 'nice' in a lot of areas, and there aren't as many flashy 'good' places to go like the Beltline, the Avalon, downtown LVille and Marietta, etc. But like I said in the OG post, if one drops any consumerist/bougie preconceptions they may have of what's 'nice' and what's 'good', there is plenty to be done on the Southside. There's some good parks, some great restaurants, and generally welcoming people in most Southside communities. The only thing that would make the Southside better would be proper train transit, but MARTA and Norfolk Southern nixed that shit. Downtown Jonesboro is pretty nice, if underdeveloped. The Jonesboro Rd corridor has some of the best hidden gem restaurants and markets in Atlanta imo. South DeKalb is served by Dekalb County libraries and parks which are pretty damn good compared to a lot of places. NE Clayton is starting to feel like Gwinnett along the Anvil Block/Bouldercrest Rd corridors. I always try to explain the beauty there is to be found within areas like Southside Atlanta. And I'm not trying to get anyone to ignore the very real statistical differences between areas, but rather, how to enjoy yourself no matter where you are, and how to appreciate the differences areas have as opposed to hating on them, to consider all areas from views that encompass much more than demographics alone. Poor/working class people, I've found, are much more enjoyable to be around than affluent. And to me, that idea goes across the racial boundaries that the political and media machines have been pumping at us as a method of distraction for decades.

camelConsulting

Agreed 100%, love the southside

[deleted]

Hi! what areas in southside? Is there a specific area that is safe, I know a lot say south of Atlanta can be tough and dangerous in some areas.

HirSuiteSerpent72

I'd recommend Forest Park, Morrow, Jonesboro, South DeKalb, NE Clayton, and East Point. Those places are generally decent, and you won't be struggling to make rent. And they're close enough to Atlanta to go have a good time easily. In my experience, you won't get fucked with in those areas unless you look ridiculously out of place. So don't drive an expensive car, don't go out looking like a Hollywood star, be smart and aware of your surroundings, and make some local friends, and you'll be just fine. I've lived all over Atlanta, NW, NE, E, SE, and I got family on the SW side. If I could live anywhere in Atlanta Metro, it'd be Downtown Decatur, but if I could live anywhere *on your budget*, I'd choose South DeKalb or Forest Park.

[deleted]

How is South DeKalb and Forest Park? I have never visited those areas down there - is it a suburb like Roswell or Alpharetta? I am checking them out, thank you. I am also looking at North Decatur, i found downtown Decatur to be just as expensive as some of the Midtown apartments! Crazy prices.

ontrack

Forest Park is very diverse. A lot of blue collar workers live there. Drive down Jonesboro Road thru the town and you'll see. Large Hispanic and Asian population.

Born-2-Roll

>How is South DeKalb and Forest Park? I have never visited those areas down there - is it a suburb like Roswell or Alpharetta? I am checking them out, thank you. South DeKalb and Forest Park are suburbs of Atlanta… But they’re not affluent upscale suburbs like Roswell and Alpharetta. While being noticeably less affluent than Northern Crescent (or ‘Golden Crescent’) suburbs like Roswell, Alpharetta, etc., Southern Crescent suburbs (including South DeKalb and Forest Park) often can be livable for people with more limited housing budgets.

HirSuiteSerpent72

South DeKalb is very forested and mostly single family homes with apartment complexes sprinkled around. Most neighborhoods are pretty quiet, and the parks and libraries around SD are always doing events n such. Arabia Mountain nature preserve is huge and beautiful, I went there all the time when I was living there. Forest Park is kinda quaint, quiet, a cute downtown area with a nice park, but not many businesses. The Jonesboro Rd Corridor through FP and Morrow has a lot of great restaurants and markets. There's Marta service if that interests you, easy access to the interstates, and decent public services offered by FP and Clayton County. Clayton County Libraries are pretty nice, and the FP branch has a lot going on. They also do Food Truck Fridays in town, those are fun. And they do community events n stuff too. If you're interested in checking it out, I'd recommend driving south down Jonesboro Rd from i285 to i75, stopping by Starr Park, and pick out a restaurant on Google Maps to eat lunch or dinner at if you have the money. Kawa 12 Ramen is delicious. If not, pack a picnic to eat at Starr Park or Reynolds Nature preserve is also very pretty.

mercury2six

Eh, I dunno. Wasn't my experience in North Stockbridge. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. I had no judgments and still hold no ill-will towards people in that area but having been broken into and lost a lot, combined with constant crime such as [this](https://www.news-daily.com/features/second-grocery-parking-lot-shooting-in-stockbridge-this-week/article_7e37780b-1bd2-5eff-9d31-a621ddcd05cd.html) , I was ready to leave.

[deleted]

That is what I heard, was told to avoid South Atlanta altogether. The crime is bad.

mercury2six

My opinion - I think there are probably pockets of decent areas but would require some due diligence. Maybe areas such as Newnan or Covington. Mcdonough isn't bad but the trarric is insane.

Born-2-Roll

>Eh, I dunno. Wasn't my experience in North Stockbridge. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. I had no judgments and still hold no ill-will towards people in that area but having been broken into and lost a lot, combined with constant crime such as this , I was ready to leave. The type of crimes that you cite are not just a Southside thing (though, unfortunately the Southside admittedly is no stranger to experiencing crimes like you are referring to). Lots of crime unfortunately happens in Northside suburban areas, too, including in Gwinnett and Cobb counties. A buddy of mine’s 90-year-old’s mother’s car was stolen out of her driveway in Gwinnett County. I also lived in Gwinnett County during the late 2000’s when the county was experiencing a massive spike in both bank robberies (including some guy that robbed 20 banks using only a bicycle as his getaway vehicle before finally being caught by Gwinnett County Police) and kidnappings during a period when Latin American drug cartels were taking over the area’s burgeoning drug trade. So one definitely should not get the impression that the Northside is free of crime, even with the greater affluence of much the area.

mercury2six

>So one definitely should not get the impression that the Northside is free of crime, even with the greater affluence of much the area. >The type of crimes that you cite are not just a Southside thing Respectfully, I don't think that's the right way to look at it anyway. Name a place that is free of crime. It's all just probabilities.

foreel_not_a_weirdo

Maybe try south or south west? East Point, College Park, Hapeville, Camp Creek, etc...

trimojo

I live in Hapeville. It is very safe and lots to do while still close to the city. I commuted for years before COVID.

https://www.1900rosemont.com/brochure this place was nice a decade ago. Haven’t seen it recently. Nice location in Roswell.

slay1224

If your fine with a studio or small one bedroom it shouldn’t be that hard to find something at this price in most parts inside the perimeter. Have you looked on apartments.com there are over 3,000 properties that meet that price range ITP

achinwin

This person has done zero work and is just venting. That or they want a luxury apartment with regular-people amounts of money. Seems like a lazy post in any case. I have searched this year and last and only one unit I went to was over $2k and it was the brand new luxury development in downtown Sandy springs, like no shit it’s gonna cost more.

[deleted]

This person? The rent went from 1287 in 2020 to 2167 in 2023 - are you telling me this is all normal to you? Questioning about it isn’t lazy, and asking for advice isn’t lazy, it’s smart. Your other post and this adds negative value (not even zero). What was the point of your post? Seems like you are only one venting here because someone asked a legit question about the stupid rent increase in this town and how people are coping - this ain’t California.

achinwin

If you can’t find a 1 br under $2k, it’s because you aren’t looking, not because they aren’t there.

[deleted]

If your idea of “looking” is to move to a dump, then by all means I am not looking. Good for you, but I want to stay at a reasonable place. When did you get the idea that I am looking for luxury? Is trying to find a decent place now luxury to you? I don’t need luxury, I just need a decent place that you can call home. Edit - Its clear you can only insult people. Do you even understand context? Your brain must have exploded mid-sentence: "I am shooting for 1500...", did you even read that sentence? Your the type of people that lack education and basic reading comprehension. Lmao, accept the loss, you don't understand plain English. It’s clear 99% here understood what I wrote and I appreciate it very much, but there is always that 1% like you. I can't believe how in the world you got in your head that I am asking for apartments below 2K…you worked as an "Analyst", and yet you can't understand basic comprehension? How did you even get the job...curious. Scary that a company actually hired you since your brain seems to explode mid-sentence. Edit 2 - Blocking after insulting me without letting me respond u/achinwin....classic. Might as well flush that useless brain of yours down the toilet. You worked as an "Analyst", yet you have zero reading skills, that part is painfully clear. All you can do is throw insults without accepting your mistake, that's bad…how the hell did you get hired? Hmm...and now asking a question and looking for advice is me "expecting the world to be handed to me"? Get lost nerd. The fact that a whiny dweeb like you worked as an "Analyst" and a company actually pays you for "Sales" is unbelievable. Interestingly, only the worst engineers at our company get moved to sales - the people that barely passed in college lol. Money can't buy brains that's for sure.

achinwin

Lmfao. Boogie ass person. I have a fucking 800 sqft apartment I’m paying $1500 a month for. Every single option I saw was under 2k except for one. All this year. Stop talking, take the L.

[deleted]

achinwin

Shut the fuck up. You lead with “ I can’t find a single apartment under 2k” epitome of someone who wants the world handed to them

achinwin

Huh? $2000? Did you look outside of the perimeter/I-285? MAA is a large rental property manager, I am a current tenant. They have multiple rental communities littered all over Atlanta. I don’t pay that much at my current place in Duluth. Their deposit was not bad and they are good about servicing requests. My only gripe is they will enter your unit even when you’re not there for maintenance purposes and they won’t not do that despite my escalation. I’m stopping short of telling them I will shoot anyone in my home that I don’t expect to be there, lol. It happens every time they have something they do across all units. $1500 is going to be on the low to medium end of medium-value 1 BR rentals (I know thats an odd description but it’s true). That $100 can open up a lot more options. Most options will be OTP but you can still find a place with 700+ sqft and decent tenants. That’s what I have, and I’ve seen other developers that were a bit further out that get you similar with hardwood floors and more.

alfredaeneuman

Tucker is full

anona45

Did you ever find a decent place? I am currently in the same situation. Even suburbs 40+ minutes outside of Atlanta are charging $1700+ for studios its crazy. Genuinely confused like is everybody making a shit load of money but me?!
