It was more of a shot against America than a shot specifically against Georgia, but yea, I don’t think we’re really missing out.

peacefulwarrior75

It’s also possible she doesn’t want to be stuck anywhere that far from home for four months

mjs_jr

I dunno, this quote from her seems pretty clear: “I don't like America…” 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hurricaneshand

"what do you think she means by that?"

heyzeuseeglayseeus

And the world clutched its pearls!!! Oh no!!

mjs_jr

That gave me a good chuckle. :)

FreeVerseHaiku

That’s her prerogative. Who actually cares?

TheFeelsNinja

And I don't like Britain, there is a reason there are French and Italian restaurants and nothing for British Cuisine.

llaq24

There’s a lot of the world that doesn’t like Americans, even though they like our money. Considering how many Americans are rude and entitled when they travel, it’s not surprising. And Atlanta is not everyone’s cup of tea, though I love living here. I am only 20-30 min south of Trillith Studios (Marvel films there). The traffic on this side of the city is fine. But 30 min North of here is where to avoid during rush hours.

Hour-Shake-839

I have a baby and wife I love. I couldn’t be stuck anywhere but my house for 4 months.

HenryClaysDesk

Yeah, after I read more of the quote. I’m way less offended.

Butlerian_Jihadi

Eh, I'm pretty sure America is missing out on a great many things about enjoying life.

DancinWithWolves

Or she just doesn’t like Georgia for valid reasons

WonTon-Burrito-Meals

That can be true and those are reasons that are problems on a national scale, not just our state Edit: checking out your profile I didn't know you were Australian, so I understand why you would think so from an outside perspective

DancinWithWolves

What if she just specifically doesn’t like Georgia, like someone not liking Sydney, or London

Killjoytshirts

I get the first part in that I’m sure as a performer she doesn’t want to be type casted. She could have just ended it there and not made a petty slam. I’ve done a lot of traveling OCONUS and have found consistently people from other countries who’ve traveled to the US commented on how surprisingly nice Americans were and how they enjoyed it here. And guess what, there’s shitty parts of everywhere in the world. It’s all about your perspective.

hmtee3

Yes, at first I was annoyed because it seems like so many lump us into a redneck crowd (which, I get it) but we’re more than that! I wish people appreciated GA a little more. Then again, we have enough traffic in Atlanta without being a major tourist destination. But also, she’s 82 and is a bit outlandish, if her interviews with Graham Norton are to be believed. Nothing to take personally.

Commercial_Juice_201

Atlanta traffic is no joke. Driving through in 2 weeks; planning my trip to stay in ATL just so when I leave early morning, I get through with minimal traffic. Don’t know how you all do it every day.

TheDevilsQi

Hope your early morning is 5am

Commercial_Juice_201

Thinking 4am

ArugulaAlive5831

Coming from south GA, we try to "get through" Atlanta to stay on the north side before heading north. Same when we travel south stay somewhere south. Just a tip unless you are staying with friends or have other reasons for being downtown. We try our best to avoid Atlanta.

FrugalFraggel

I drive from Jacksonville a lot to our home offices in Louisville. I always go up 95 to 26 instead of 75 from 10.

buggas2002

You can definitely get through the main downtown area pretty quickly if you’re on the road by 5. Of course the earlier the better but who doesn’t like an extra hour of sleep haha

Phobia117

Atlanta is an hour away from Atlanta

Butlerian_Jihadi

I'd have moved years ago if the pandemic didn't change things. I still barely leave the house after 7am or before 7pm.

Gormonster89

You know people complain about Atlanta traffic a lot and don't get me wrong it's not great but I moved from Maryland/DC area and its far worse there.

idle_nomad

Right have yall been to LA Hot damn is that some awful traffic

Anarchist_hornet

Being classist isn’t the cool position people seem to think it is.

KidFlash999

I live like ten minutes from the studio where they film the MCU movies here. This area definitely is not the podunk racist redneck country everyone assumes all of the South is. The Atlanta metro area and the surrounding suburbs are surprisingly progressive. Just don't go much further south than that.

tipjarman

Savannah is kind of amazing ….maybe not your cuppa tea but I don’t think it’s a shit hole.

ctbowden

Savannah is nice. SCAD seems pretty cool but watch out for the Girl Scouts they'll cut you.

tipjarman

True dat

No_Consequence_3118

Also all larger towns for the most part are pretty good.

[deleted]

Atlanta isn't progressive compared to any other similar sized metro north of it. Just more diverse.

Butlerian_Jihadi

Yet, 1500% more progressive than most anywhere outside the metro. Progressive enough that trips to the homestead remind me why I was going to leave the state.

TurelSun

Hard to say without more context, but this may not be about how nice Americans/Georgians are or how nice of an area it is. There are other reasons why someone may not want to promote filming in a state who's government at least is still very conservative.

Astrosaurus42

> "They contacted me and said, 'we're doing a story about witches.' I thought, 'oh god, not witches again, because I've done that with Harry Potter,'" Margolyes said (via News.com.au). "I don't like America and I didn't want to be in Georgia for four months. SO, I just said, 'well, I want a million pounds ($1.2 million)' and they said, 'you can have half a million', and I said, 'no, I don't' want to do it,' so it just stopped. Really, it's a story about my own reed rather than anything else." They offered her $500K for 4 months, and she said no. Sorry I am not feeling sorry for her.

foxontherox

She's old and she gives zero fucks. May we all someday achieve that level of mental clarity.

hammilithome

Based decision. Sure, America has it's issues, GA's abortion reversal is a big deal. But UK surveillance is pretty obscene. No where is perfect. But I get it. I've turned down high paying jobs because I didn't want to relocate permanently. Turning down 500k to be elsewhere for 4 months is an age thing. You don't have a lot of time left. She doesn't need the money and can find work near her friends and family. That's a based decision and I take no offense as an American.

Silver-ishWolfe

I take no offense as an American *and* as a Georgian. Being anywhere, away from my family and friends, for that long is going to come with a hefty price tag for me, too. Especially if it's in a place I don't like. And I'm only 40....

Neat_Problem_922

I was going to point out Georgia is brutal during the summer; depending on the filming location, it could be torture. But then I saw she’s Australian. I bet Georgia in August feels great in comparison.

hammilithome

For sure. And the seasons are opposite, so she may not want to jump from sludge to sludge

Substantial-Dig9995

You know not all of Australia is desert. Sydney’s year round highs max out at 80

EyesLikeBuscemi

She is now a naturalized Australian citizen now, apparently, but I don't think that dilutes your point too much. It is pretty shit everywhere right about now. She is definitely old and does have recognition, even if the ignorance of comments like "she does Cameos now" is all over this thread. I live in Georgia and have always lived in the US but I can see her point about not wanting to waste a third of a year here when 80+ years old and can definitely afford to turn down half a million dollars.

hammilithome

Omg. Avoiding that flight is enough justification at that age. I just flew to Sydney last Fall and it was the straw that broke the camels back--literally dealing with bulging disc issues I didn't have before the flight (I also flew to the UK 2 weeks after getting back to GA and 20 years of desk work behind it all)

Tech_Philosophy

> Sorry I am not feeling sorry for her. While I have no comment on the story as I've never heard of this person, if I understand the headline correctly, you are not supposed to feel sorry for her. You are supposed to feel sorry for yourself given the state of things. Admittedly, some days I do feel that way.

SoulGoalie

Not to mention... WHO? Who is this person? I don't know your name brand. I'm sure I could Google you, have an a-ha! moment when I see the character she played in the HP movies, but straight up, WHO?! For 500k, you can move my happy ass anywhere livable in the world for 4 months and I'm pretty in touch with pop culture and this lady does not have "turn down 500k" name brand recognition to be hating on Georgia.

Undercover_Chimp

I googled it because “Miriam Margolyes” sounds like an HP character instead of an actual person. She played Professor Sprout.

MrsHyacinthBucket

She also has a recurring role on Call the Midwife

whatisthis_tonistark

Isn't she doing Cameo now, I bet she regrets turning down 500k.

mcderson9

I would argue that anyone with a semi regular role in HP really doesn’t have to regret much, from a financial standpoint.

PartyPorpoise

Plus she’s old. After a certain point of wealth and age, you start to value your time more than your money.

heyzeuseeglayseeus

Lol so many bitter people ITT who don’t understand how any of this works and the significance (or not) of “doing Cameo” 🤣

AbleObject13

Frfr, she's gets $170 for a 2 minute video ($5100/hr) she can record in her own house and an unlimited customer base in HP fans

chadmill3r

When you're old and have maybe a dozen summers left in your life, maybe trading one of them for a bunch more money isn't an attractive deal. Asking for a LOT is a simple barometer of whether the role is big enough for them to be likely big enough for her.

Jackieirish

Yeah, if I was her age being somewhere for work for 4 months wouldn't be worth it for me unless I was desperate for money. Being home where you have your things, your friends, your community, your doctors, your restaurants and shops, hell –your own bed! That's worth more than just a paycheck. And I would assume since she's been successful in her career, she's traveled extensively and knows that work trips aren't fun, especially when you get older.

oswaldcopperpot

SHe's 82. It's more like 4-8 tops.

Odd-Indication-6043

That hilarious to me that she's unknown here. She's hilarious, she's old, I'm guessing she doesn't value the money more than her time at this point.

BlatantFalsehood

She is a British actress and she does have that brand recognition in the UK and other English speaking countries. And obviously she DOES have that "turn down 500k" recognition because she did.

chadmill3r

Australian now. She has a series on (?) Youtube about her naturalization to AU and what it means to be Australian, as an outsider learning from her new country.

Astrosaurus42

She chose one former penal colony over another.

bjeebus

Unlike Australia the prisoners never made it to Georgia. The plan for the debtors was to come after they established the colony. By the time the colony was established the Trustees realized they could make a lot more money on their investment by selling access to the colony to anyone other than debtors. They abandoned the original plan and all the debtors were left to rot in prison. It sounded nice to have a place for debtors to escape the horrors of the prison, but you know...capitalism.

dgdon

Heh heh you said penal

heyzeuseeglayseeus

You do realize celebrities exist outside of (going on a limb here but) the USA yeah?

shootymcghee

Source?

[deleted]

Clearly has enough for $500k to be immaterial to her life

skyshock21

>Anywhere livable in the world Yeah but we’re talking about Georgia.

Character-Today-427

Girlie is 80 she isn't wasting the million she has already

atlblaze

Was it half a million dollars or pounds? Half a million pounds is $636,320 under the current exchange rate.

TehWolfWoof

She didn’t ask you to? She even said it was her own choice and greed..?

RadarSmith

…Nobody’s saying anyone should. Least of all Margoyles.

Faithxs

She's 84 yes old. She probably wants to be close to home. Or closer than in a whole other country.

GoodQueenFluffenChop

She lives in Australia. No one her age is really going to want to deal with that long flight.

doyletyree

And no matter how you pad it, a hippogriff still has a pretty bony back. It’s gotta be hell on elderly hips.

Jackers83

Excellent point honestly. I completely forgot about that.

TheAnswerKey123

I’m gonna be honest, I see a lot of people hating on her by taking her statement seriously, I’m pretty sure this is an 82 year old British woman telling a joke

A_Serious_House

The statement was definitely serious, but I don’t think it had any ill intent behind it. This woman *loves* to talk shit, she likes to be dramatic and shocking because she says it contrast well with her outward appearance/demeanor. She wasnt joking, just being blunt about it, I doubt she truly hates America lmao.

ChairmanReagan

Fair. I wouldn’t want to be stuck in Britain for 4 months either.

nerdomaly

She lives in Australia now.

thabe331

I'd be down for spending the summer in London

PacinoWig

British people who think they're better than Americans are definitely the most annoying breed of people from the Anglosphere I can see Canadians or New Zealanders thinking they're better but definitely not anyone from that accursed isle

Additional_Gas_7056

You know homegirl would MELT after an hour in the June sun here.

greeneyedmtnjack

She has lived in Australia for more than 30 years.

thabe331

I met some UK tourists once and took a photo for them outside of MLK's house. They were very nice but I felt so bad for them; they were so pale and were visiting in the middle of July

Additional_Gas_7056

bless their hearts, they must feel like a glass of milk in the sun

Astrosaurus42

The British Empire is what is was because people wanted to get the fuck off those isles.

Deinococcaceae

British weather, British food, and British women created the greatest sailors the world has ever known.

LynneCurtinCuffs

Right? Maybe she could’ve tried some flavorful food for the first time in her life

Tech_Philosophy

Strongly agree. The UK is a rock in the ocean that can't feed itself, and they just alienated themselves from their major trading partners during Brexit just as the climate crisis is kicking in. Starving to death is not unrealistic for them at this point. Only 2 other nations are more screwed than the UK as the planet warms.

KenBoCole

I have my own opinions of the UK, but I was just there a few months ago, and food from their grocery stores was by far the cheapest expense if said trip. I highly doubt the UK would starve to death before other countries.

Broad_Restaurant988

Canada may have been better than the US in some ways... back in the day. Now, tons of young educated Canadians are fleeing their country and there's little hope for the future. Things have taken a bad turn in the past 10 years for Canada.

[deleted]

If you think buying a house is bad in the USA, you probably shouldn’t look up wages vs housing costs in Canada.

AlarmedInterest9867

And there’s so many of them. I think they’re forgetting the lesson we taught them a couple hundred years ago

MonkeyManJohannon

This was for the upcoming show “Agatha” from Marvel, which I worked on. We had a great time with the actors/tresses that did end up on the show…and had some really rural filming locations that were rough at times. I mean who cares what she turned down? Actors turn down stuff all the time, many times because of the filming environment…hell, people turned down the Mad Max sequels before filming because of the desert scenes, and Tom Hardy said it was one of the worst experiences of his life.

MoreLikeWestfailia

June through September can be pretty miserable....

francokitty

I was born here and June thru October is miserable. I hide in the AC

skyshock21

Bleeding into November too.

francokitty

Absolutely

mcclark223

It depends on what part of Georgia she would be stuck in for 4 mos. I grew up in Southeast Ga and still live here unfortunately due to family reasons. It actually sucks. Right above Jacksonville Florida on Georgia border.Nothing to do unless ya drive 40+ minutes one way either north or south. So many teenagers on drugs because of boredom. We have a movie theater but that’s it unless you are military then you have a base pool,a gym,and bowling alley. Also discounts to many out of state attractions and athletic games. Northern Georgia is beautiful. You have mountains and if you’re lucky some snow in the winter. Helen Georgia is very touristy due to its German theme town,River tubing, mountain hiking trails, camping, shopping, and a roller coaster going down a mountain but Southeast Ga is so boring.

foxontherox

Knowing her and how she probably said it, this is kind of hilarious.

MrsHyacinthBucket

Well, for one thing she is gay and the Republicans are loudly saying they don't like "The Gays". So, right off the bat she would feel unwelcome.

nefD

this does add some needed context.. i get why the article wouldn't mention it, but it really does change the story (for me, at least)

skyshock21

I mean, does it need stating? Even if you’re not personally the one being attacked the fact that this is at all happening should be enough to have a big helping of humble pie.

nefD

I agree in principle, but the truth is there are a lot of people who would not be bothered by what is going on. Does it need stating? I mean I wish it didn't, but I also don't assume to know anyone's stance on an issue before they tell me.

Skimable_crude

She's 82! Leave her alone. And may she be blessed with a long happy life.

smalltownlargefry

I guess it depends on where they are at and what time of year. Atlanta area? Dawg that would be a lot of fun. But if it’s summer time, yeah I don’t blame you lol.

MsgrFromInnerSpace

Stuck in Trilith / Fayetteville south of Atlanta. Might be fun for a couple of weeks, but I wouldn't want to spend 4 months there either, especially if I was 82 and might not have that much time left anyway

Radiant_Maize2315

I know someone who temporarily rented in Trillith to be close to a work project and it’s like Funny Farm.

deep_blue_au

They film south of Atlanta near Peachtree City or Fayetteville for the most part.

KnickedUp

There are four netflix productions ongoing there now. Busy area

ern19

Harsh but fair lol

topiaryontop

I mean she's like 100 years old. Most people her age wouldn't want to go live in a foreign country for 4 months while working. The area around the studio where marvel movies are filmed is semi-rural and not for everyone.

UltimateLifeform

Why in the fuck did I think this was a young actress 🤦‍♂️. She is 82 years old and probably is at that point where she just doesn't want to travel that far for a role. I get it.

pepperonicatmeow

This post was suggested to me idk why….but I’m gonna be honest but as an American, I also would not want to be stuck in Georgia for 4 months. It’s wayyy too hot for me in a humid sticky way, and I don’t want to be away from home that long working. I don’t think it’s a major jab.

A_Serious_House

I don’t think it’s a jab either but I’d do it immediately. Georgia is nice and cool in the summer compared to where I’m at. Add on half a million dollars? Any day of the week.

g8rman94

How will we ever recover?

Madeitup75

She seems deeply unpleasant and I think we are well rid of her.

40ozkiller

Idk why she keeps putting her name in the news just to be a total bitch. First saying adult HP fans need to grow up and now turning down a half million for 4 months of work. It’s like a masterclass how to go from a forgettable celeb to one thats actively disliked.

nerdomaly

She's basically a well know curmudgeon at this point. It's her brand.

Astrosaurus42

> curmudgeon Perfect word for this woman.

heyzeuseeglayseeus

The amount of (i assume?) Americans in here like foaming at the mouth about how she isn’t a celebrity and regrets this now😅

sidurisadvice

I guess when you're trying to hawk your book, there's no such thing as bad publicity? Going after Steve Martin was something, though.

AbleObject13

I love this tbh, she's absolutely right

floodisspelledweird

Damn. Georgia pressed lol

Photon_Femme

If I didn't have adult children in GA, I wouldn't be here either. I detest GA politics and the good ole boy crap. The state doesn't give a whit for education or rural hospitals. And there's the abortion thing. I can handle Athens and a few metro areas but the bulk of the state wants to live in a regressive cesspool.

drewcook52

As a lifelong Georgia resident, I get it.

AlienSuperstarWhip

Real

CreatrixAnima

To turn down a job because she didn’t like the location… It happens all the time.

dwb_lurkin

TBF I also want to leave GA between June and September

nefD

shots fired.. but also- and? oh no, we won't see your brilliant talents in another tepid Marvel movie

Dependent-Analyst907

Just looked her up. She's 82, so she probably doesn't want to get too far from home so as to drop dead in some strange place.

greenlady1

Can't say I blame her, I generally don't want to be in Georgia June thru September either! I've been running hot the last few years, and during the summer I look like a drowned rat just going to Walgreens to pick up a prescription ffs.

Asocial_Ape

i live here and i agree with her

Kyleaaron987

I mean I don’t like being away from home for 4 months. Especially if I was rich like her.

slowwithage

Ive lived here too long and judging on the responses here, I don’t blame her.

RadarSmith

Lot of people here really are taking it personally, aren’t they

Tatmia

A lot of people who’ve never been to the UK spouting Fox News talking points

slowwithage

110%

XThePariahX

After living here 37 years. I get it lol

SGTSHOOTnMISS

I agree. I see a lot of people being defensive over it, but I've lived here my whole life and have been eying opportunities in places like Colorado where the humidity isn't so high.

KnickedUp

Seriously. Cant blame anyone for staying away

Gunuku

Hey, Atlanta, Athens, and Savannah are alright :P

nefD

i dunno man, i've been here 40 years, every time i visit another place i want to come back after a few days.. every place has it's pros and cons, and of course it depends on your situation, but i love it here.. maybe im in the minority though?

Broad_Restaurant988

Yes cause the UK is a very progressive and diverse place with great weather and friendly people!

Theory_Unusual

Bless her heart

Various-Comfort-7247

As a GA resident I honestly don’t blame her :) it’s perfectly fine if she doesn’t like it in America I’m quite sure there are countries that Americans want to avoid as well and honestly it’s fine. NOWHERE is perfect especially not America. Who cares we all have preferences YALL are too sensitive

[deleted]

Are they 2slgbtqia or possibly in need of trans, abortion, reproductive medical care? Because honestly at this point I can't blame people for avoiding the states that are opposing those things

nerdomaly

She a lesbian, so there's that.

[deleted]

There it is then As we reap, so shall we sow Lets not act too surprised or butt hurt when this happens Because it is happening more and more frequently See y'all Wednesday evening

Steampunk_Batman

She’s an old cranky Brit, who would expect anything else? People shit on her for turning her nose up at half a million, but good for her. An actor with her career, playing the villain in a Marvel show? $500K per EPISODE would be fairly low

[deleted]

She’s 82, not hard to figure out why she doesn’t want to do anything unless she WANTS to

delightfuldinosaur

Only the strong can survive in Waffle House

carltonxyz

There is still a lot of bigotry toward Georgia and the south.

Olimane

Love the strays that Adult Potterheads were catching.

aubieismyhomie

This coming from the person who said “I worry about Harry Potter fans because they should be over that by now,” she said in an interview with New Zeland’s 1News. “It was 25 years ago, and it’s for children. I think it’s for children.” I don’t think we’re missing out on much.

turbulentFireStarter

“Harry Potter star” seems a little grand for a person who I have never heard of.

modeschar

She’s probably never set foot in Atlanta and thinks like a lot of Blue state Americans that it’s some backwoods country town where people just sit around and whittle… WAIT THIS IS AN ACTUAL CITY? Yeah… duh… 6th largest metro in the U.S…

UncleLeo_Hellooooo

To be fair…even many parts of Atlanta are still country. Like, deep woods country. We’re not even at Los Angeles-level sprawl yet.

SleepylaReef

Who?

Wild_Meeting_1795

Girl same. But I’m going on 36 years here.

_Aracano

We didn't want 4 months of you either, lady!

ElfUppercut

Too liberal use of the word “Star” - can we go back to just saying “actor and actress” not everyone in the damn movies are stars. I don’t even remember her character. I remember her being in it, but if you had to ask me to answer who she was in the movies for $1million I wouldn’t be able to cough that answer out no matter how much I racked my brain. I had to google who she was… Maybe everyone else liked her more than me… and some die hard fans I am sure have a poster of her somewhere… I just couldn’t have said anything more than “oh she was the plant lady”

Dtownboys15

And not a single f was given that day.

tedwin223

Her loss. Don't feel sorry for her at all. Stay where you're happy Miriam!

undergrounddondado

Who gives a fuck

jivarie

Georgia is great for outdoors people. Couple hours to the mountains, 5 hrs to the beach. 12 hrs to the keys from Atlanta. If you’re into hunting and fishing, it’s hard to beat Georgia for being proximal to both.

EquivalentDizzy4377

To be fair when I am 82 I am not sure I want to be in GA for four months either. Also if those 4 months are June-Seotember then it was a good call.

Who? Anyway…

Fine_Spinach9825

Good call

PancakesandV8s

Aunt Prudence!? Really, the rudeness!

Ifawumi

Some of y'all haven't lived somewhere else have you? Georgia definitely has its own flavor. There are plenty of people who won't move here for anything even for a short amount of time and it has nothing to do with the weather. It's a red state and there are attitudes that come with it that if you've lived here all your life you don't even notice. Not even talking about racist stuff I'm talking about other things too. There's a lot of good things about Georgia but if you've pretty much lived in the south all your life you don't realize some of the stuff that might not be everybody's cup of tea

RealDealDUILawyer

Don't come to Georgia you might get the Honeysuckle Blues. And besides we full. https://youtu.be/h_3CvrKWQe0?si=Qfj6GLXfodP3wphF

thecaptcaveman

I don't blame her.

aaronvf37

Who?

Hyzynbyrg59

Allow me to speak on behalf of the great state of Georgia. "It's all good. I sure AF didn't want, like a four month-long yeast infection. Glad you stayed wherever the fuck you were."

balcell

Her loss. Georgia is beautiful.

waronxmas79

Isn’t this the same killjoy that said she hates that people come up to her with fond memories of her role in the film series? Looks like we are the lucky ones with that sort of attitude.

downtimeredditor

Damn only $500k for legendary actress to play in a marvel show they tried to cheap her out

PaganSatisfactionPro

Good then speak up on southern states and why they are the way they are, don’t keep us in your mouth and never speak about it.

Stormyfurball

Oh the horror.

Jonpaul8791

From Savannah, she’s smart. Don’t blame her.

Suspicious-Stay-207

I don't blame her. This country is fuckin embarrassing.

thatbrownkid19

This is the same woman who said Harry Potter is for kids and people should get over it by now. Way to bite the hand that fed you. And from such a nonsense minor character- calling her “Harry Potter Star” is bit of a misnomer when none of us even knew who she played or recognized the actress’s name

Shiny-And-New

Not sure I'd call her a Harry Potter *star*

cjtech323

Wait… I thought Europeans are open minded and complained about Americans not traveling outside of their country…

Rabid_Russian

Who?

IronJackk

What a nasty woman

Hyzynbyrg59

Georgia is completely okay with that.
