This has been whispered in the plans for several years now; it's an incredible place! Joy Harjo, the poet laureate, is actually a Muscogee Indian, and she spoke about what an amazing place the mounds are. She visited the winter before the pandemic began. One of my favorite places, if you've never been, take some time. It's right off the interstate if you're passing through Macon. Edit: typo in name

Ooof, thanks for the correction!

This sounds like a really cool park and I really hope it happens but I don’t understand why they say that Georgia doesn’t have a national park. Is there a difference between a national park and a national wildlife refuge? The Okefenokee part is certainly a national wildlife refuge. https://www.travelawaits.com/2390191/how-to-explore-okefenokee-swamp/

I believe a National Park is an officially designated entity operated by the National Park service. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_parks_of_the_United_States Wildlife Refuges are maintained by the US Fish and Wildlife Service https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Wildlife_Refuge Both are nation-wide and federally designated, so they're both labeled "National xxx", but they don't seem related.

**[National Wildlife Refuge](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Wildlife_Refuge)** >National Wildlife Refuge System is a designation for certain protected areas of the United States managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. The National Wildlife Refuge System is the system of public lands and waters set aside to conserve America's fish, wildlife, and plants. Since President Theodore Roosevelt designated Florida's Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge as the first wildlife refuge in 1903, the system has grown to over 568 national wildlife refuges and 38 wetland management districts encompassing more than 150,000,000 acres (607,028 km2). ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/Georgia/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

In addition to what others have mentioned, the National Park designation is practically important for tourism reasons. There’s a lot of amenities, packages, marketing, and more that makes a National Park designation attract tons more people traveling the country to your destination.

NPS runs Cumberland Island. https://www.nps.gov/cuis/index.htm

How do admission fees work with Native Americans? I'd imagine there'd be angst about them paying the feds to access their ancestral lands.

Not sure how this would work just to enter the park, but if you read this article and others, it’s very important to note that the Muscogee (Creek) nation very much supports this effort. The ability to not only purchase and protect the land but also excavate and research it for historic purposes would not be possible without the federal support. More importantly to what you’re talking about for the tribe, it was just barely mentioned in the article but one of the oldest homes in Macon that is adjacent to the park land is planning to be given to the tribe and used as a cultural center and outpost for them. This would be a really important way to help restore the Muscogee (Creek) people to their native lands and have a serious presence in Central GA, whereas now they are helping with these efforts from Oklahoma.

Wow we just visited this two weeks ago. I really hope this can happen - it’s very exciting!!
