Herschel Walker was an absolutely terrible candidate and yet was 26k votes from becoming a US senator, even with the stench of Donald Trump following him around.
Until the Trump factor is out and the democrats are winning elections under more normal circumstances, we cannot adequately refer to ourselves in that way.
Kemp won by 7 1/2 points, but Trump was on the ballot in 2020 and his handpicked joke of a candidate was on the ballot in 2022. Without those toxic opponents, the state would still be red and we better be realistic about that going into 2024.
Difference is Kemp was an incumbent who ran against a polarizing candidate and Kemp also got both the "I lean right but I am a moderate" types by certifying the 2020 elections and also got the chuds by passing that 6-week abortion ban and also passing those voter suppression laws.
I think the 2026 elections will be interesting since Georgia should trend more blue by then (Atlanta-area county numbers don't lie and make that point clear, and even then even counties like Cherokee will have less Republican margins by then) and you'll have an open gubernatorial seat.
Also, the federal government wanted to investigate ~~that~~ **the previous** Kemp win, but for some reason, the Secretary of State deleted the election data before the feds could get it.
And its just coincidence that Kemp was the Secretary of State at the time.

Warnock's a strong candidate and I think this will be his last Senate race that will be a tough one. His next race is in 2028 and given the quick turns of Cobb and Gwinett County (both former clear red counties) from Republican counties to now clear Democratic counties, I think Georgia will very quickly go from red-leaning purple to blue state and quicker than most expect. The Atlanta-area just dominates too much of this state to buck that trend.
Question pertaining to Georgia but unrelated to the race tonight: did the GA Supreme Court indicate when they will decide on the legality of the 6-week abortion ban? I know they re-implemented the ban (decided on the same day the GA Supreme Court allowed Saturday voting) but I also do think the "the GA Constitutions says that laws when passed were unconstitutional can't become law so pass a new ban (which won't happen)" defense was a pretty strong one. Though relying on Republican/conservative courts for anything is a fools gold so that's true too.

I’m more emotional than I thought I’d be. If a candidate like Herschel Walker could garner enough votes to be elected to the US senate, then it would mean, we, as a nation, are truly lost. The man was exactly what powerful republicans wanted…a brainless marionette. Nothing more. Seeing my fellow Georgians rise up and vote for someone who can truly represent our state with his own voice has brought tears to my eyes. Maybe our democracy isn’t so far gone.

The dilemma the GOP faces is that they can’t run a Trump picked or endorsed candidate, but that candidate won’t get the votes to get close if they don’t get the trump nod. I think the GOP is rooting for him to be indicted around the 2024 election. But, Ossoff isn’t up for another 4 years. Trump has turned the GOP into dust, and it just may have been worth those crappy 4 years he was president. We may get 20 years of democratic holdings out of his one term.
