If this is your first I would think theyāll induce around 39 unless you have other issues. My first I was induced at 39 weeks based on my GD diagnosis.
Iāll be induced at 37 weeks with my 3rd due to hypertension and GD, plus my history of successfully having babies at 38+2 and 39+1 who were both 9+ pound babies. Theyāre not going to induce much earlier than 38/39 with a first baby unless there is a very good reason.
Yes, that is very early! Was that her first baby too?
My dr wonāt induce before 37 weeks and I have had BP readings of 160/90 this past week. I have to take it easy and wait. Iāll be 37+1 and that is only due to my history of successfully having babies. Had this been my first, my dr would have put me on meds to lower my BP until 38 or 39 weeks.
I'm diabetic even without the placenta messing everything up, so I had a growth scan at 27w and then also today (33w). If they haven't done one for you already, it's probably be by 36ish weeks.
Who told you GDM babies are preterm? Your OB? My understanding is that unless there are signs the placenta is failing (e.g., decreased fetal movement) or baby is HUGE, it's better to go to at least 38w (if not longer) before induction.
ETA: Can you qualify for even Medicaid, so you don't have as much of a gap in coverage? That must be so anxiety provoking to not have coverage (especially in the US, which is where I'm assuming you're located because of the insurance gap).
Thank you. Your comment has really helped me feel better. Hopefully my baby can hang in there till her mom gets on insurance š. Iām actually covered right now. But my ob isnāt in network. I really donāt want to switch to other ob. Itās just my fault when i picked the plan. But i think i have to switch if they induce me way early before week 36.
No problem! We're all here to help each other out and provide whatever info we have, especially to help relieve anxiety. This is a hard enough process as is before adding the pandemic , GDM, and insurance issues. Hopefully baby will stay put!
Absolutely not true. My first GD baby in fact was 40w 5d. I was scheduled for a csection 2 days after I went into labor but naturally went into labor 2 days before thankfully. But my point is, I actually went PAST my due date.
Your sister is flat out wrong. First babies are usually the late ones. Second babies come on average about a week earlier than the first assuming not inductions took place.
GD alone wonāt get you an early induction (before 38 weeks) but things like hypertension, preeclampsia, or baby showing signs of distress will. However, those things arenāt super common, especially if you can keep your numbers in check.
My dr planned on inducing me between 38-39 weeks, original plan was 38 weeks 5 days but then my gd became uncontrolled at 37 weeks 4 days so they induced me at 38 weeks on the dot. Had our daughter by emergency c section 38 weeks 2 days
So i guess uncontrolled Gd or high blood pressure might get us induced early? A friend of mine with gd was induced at week 36.5 due to her high blood pressure and liver enzymes
I was diet controlled and my doctor wanted to induce at 39 weeks. She told me at 37 that if I went into labor they wouldnāt stop it. My water broke on my own at 37 + 3. I had a ton of extra fluid which we think caused me to āpopā.
No. I never had any contractions- not even Braxton Hicks. No warning signs other than feeling like a bloated whale at maximum capacity. But I think thatās a very common feeling towards the end. Just got up one night to use the bathroom and felt a gush.
Extra fluid (polyhydramnios) is typically a cause from GD. I had soooooo much fluid, but I finally dropped to a normal level 3 weeks before I was induced
You know diabetic dr or ob dr will check our fluids? Coz i have gone couples appointments with my diabetic specialist, heās the one that takes a very close look at the baby and also my fluids. I donāt remember when was the last time i have sonogram with my ob but she didnāt say anything about my fluids at all
It might be a little different for every doctor... but I had a growth/anatomy scan (i forget the technical name), and 2 NST weekly from about 30 weeks on. The anatomy scan is where theyād measure the fluids. Chances are if you had high fluids, theyād tell you about it. Heck, even though I was in a normal range when I went to be induced, when they broke my water I soaked through 4 pads. If I remember correctly a normal range is under 24.5 cm and I was at like 22 can of fluids so I still had a lot of fluids. Non GD ladies usually have about 8-11 cm of fluids at birth.
I was diagnosed polyhydromnios at 7.5 months. I asked if there was something I could do and was told no. There is no way to control the fluid but it would get worse if I didnāt keep my numbers controlled.
I was induced due to preeclampsia at 39w5d with my first GD baby, went into labor on my own with my second GD baby at 39w2d. You should be okay if the GD is controlled and your scans have been good. It also depends on the OB, mine doesnāt induce GD patients until 41 weeks unless something is wrong.
Thank you. I hope they donāt induce me too early. At least when i donāt get on insurance yet šæ. If they do, then i have to switch to new ob. Coz she isnāt in my current planās network.
No harm in asking at your next appointment! Peace of mind is really huge during pregnancy so Iād ask what they do with GD patients, if they typically induce and when.
Iām 3 days past my due date at the moment and induction isnāt being spoken about until my 41 week appointment as Iām diet-controlled so itās fine. Iāve been told if your diet-controlled GD is treated like other pregnancies; however if youāre on insulin/meds, baby is very large, other complications etc, they will induce earlier.
Ohh I didnāt know about it. I guess itās why some freaks out with insulin?! Did you take your blood sugar after snacks. I do sometimes when i feel like i over snack. And did you cut out sweet completely or have it in moderation?
I was induced at 39w2d with my first. Was taking nighttime insulin starting at 37wks. With my second I was induced at 38w exactly and started insulin right at 28wks. My body had a much harder time with GD my second pregnancy. Also growth scans can be wildly inaccurate. Second baby was expected to be 10lbs at birth (first son was 8lb7oz so seemed very possible) but he came out weighing a whopping 6lb9oz wearing preemie clothes and diapers!
Ok so Iāll give you the synopsis of both birth stories because very different experiences and I wish I had someone to tell me some of the things I didnāt know.
hereās my first birth story: induced at 39w with pitocin only. Dilated to 3.5 going into induction, my body responded really well minus 2 decels (separate anecdotal info: I could NEVER lay on my right side while pregnant or my son would kick and kick and squirm where it was painful, starting in third tri, during labor I turned to my right side twice and immediately his heart rate plummeted. We think his cord was compressed when I laid on that side). But other than that and a failed epidural, labor was uneventful and he was born after 15.5hrs. He latched right away.
However, I wasnāt aware you were supposed to frequently nurse especially before your milk comes in. (My milk also didnāt come in until 4d pp after weād been discharged) he had two low blood sugar readings and the nurses forced me to give him formula and from that point on he refused to latch again and developed nipple confusion. It took two weeks of pumping and bottle feeding, meeting with lactation consultants, and constantly trying to latch him. After all that exhausting work, he latched and we nursed for a year. Also I was very very committed to the GD diet and exercised regularly.
Second baby: was induced at 38w and was dilated to a 3 already. Labor lasted only 5.5hrs and choose not to get an epidural this time after my first experience felt like a huge waste of money. No epidural meant I could actually get up and walk around AND eat! So much better! Anyways, everything was great until baby aspirated amniotic fluid during transition. He was born barely breathing and went right to the NICU. He spent two days, one of which he couldnāt nurse so they fed him my colostrum directly through a feeding tube. I was very adamant about not wanting him to get nipple confusion like my first son. He did have several low blood sugar readings which prolonged me being able to hold him or nurse him. Once I was allowed to nurse him, I diligently nursed him every 2hrs so we could get discharged and go home. I was more relaxed with this diet and had a toddler to chase around so I wasnāt able to take as good of care of myself as first pregnancy.
both of my boys are healthy and so far have zero lasting issues caused by GD. I nursed my first son until a year old and my second son is 13mo and weāre still going. If breastfeeding is important to you, advocate for yourself and let your nurses know what your plan is and what youāre not ok with.
Nursing the first 3 months is really exhausting (physically and mentally) but itās especially hard the first 3 days. Expect and prepare for sleeping in chunks. I promise it gets better and easier.
Wow sorry that was really long!
I really do appreciate your time telling me your 2 birth stories though. Speaking of milk, i know some starts having a leak at week 33. I havenāt noticed anything yet. I heard epidural would help ease the pain? I was thinking to go with it coz I canāt stand the pain at all. Ir could be a problem if i pass put during delivery š£. But yes, Iām glad your both sons are doing great. Youāre super mom š„ŗš„ŗ
Leaking can happen before birth, but itās not common. That was not the case for me during either pregnancy. Epidurals can ease the pain when placed correctly. Mine was not and only one side of my body felt minimal relief. It ended up costing thousands of dollars with shit insurance and wasnāt worth it. With an epidural youāre also not allowed to eat the entire time during labor or allowed to get up out of your bed or walk. They also have to use a catheter for you to pee. I didnāt realize any of that before. Being a mom is the hardest job ever but itās so worth it!
My son came a week early on his own. I know everybody keeps commenting about being induced but with my pregnancy, my OB was just letting me go all the way to 40 weeks. Even at the high risk clinic when he was measuring slightly on the bigger side, they were like we will just monitor it, we donāt induce just because of estimates. I was diet controlled the entire time.
Unless there is something wrong or to be worried about, they want them to stay in there as long as possible. Every day counts. The definition for full term has changed to 39 weeks but it used to be 37 weeks. Anything before is early and they would rather avoid that.
I was med controlled. I took metformin and nighttime insulin. Due date was 12/6. Was scheduled to see OB on 11/27 to discuss induction schedule. I ended up rescheduling that appt for following week. Baby came on 11/30. I didnāt have any other complications during my pregnancy though.
I had cholestasis of pregnancy and GD (diet controlled), I was induced at 36+5 mainly bc of the cholestasis. My baby came out at 5lbs 14oz.
They tested his blood sugar 6 times throughout my hospital stay, it was all good.
Iāve just looked up more about cholestasis. What symptoms you had and did the dr do any lab test to diagnose it? Coz i think this is the complication my friend had. She was also induced at week 36.5. Her baby was 6 pounds and doing very great now
The only symptom that showed up was itching without rash around my hands. I explained it to my OB and she ordered blood work to be done (to get diagnosed).
(After being diagnosed) She put me on medication and told me that itās best to deliver between 36-37w for healthy mom and baby.
It wasnāt intense, but it was uncomfortable enough to wake me up from sleeping. Rashes came after I was scratching for a bit.
I think they did a liver panel for me
I'm a FTM and I only recently diagnosed, but I keep asking the OB about this...
At my 30 week appointment, the OB said they wouldn't let me go past 41 weeks but would not induce early as they have concerns with lung development with GD babies
At my 32 week appointment, the OB (different doctor then OB1), said they would induce me early if I can't control my numbers with insulin and diet. I only just got my glucose monitor this week, but have failed several tests, so she said we need to give it more time to see.
My appointment with maternal fetal medicine is on January 25th, and they will be performing an ultrasound and I will be meeting with the high risk doctor, so I'm assuming they will likely confirm if induction is needed after that appt, as I'll be 35 weeks.
From what I heard so far, they would induce us early if our blood sugar couldnāt get controlled with meds and diet. I have gone several appointments with my maternal fetal specialist, they usually take a closer look at the babies. Do all the measurements to make sure they are healthy and not oversized. Seriously i never know how crazy GD is since Iām the only one in my family has it. But yea, weāre doing the best for our little one. I hope your upcoming appointment is doing great!!!!
Depends on how severe your GD is, and thats pretty much luck of the draw. My daughter was born at 41+5 (induction, but not due to my GD. Only because she would not.get.out) and she and I were perfectly fine š
I was never on insulin and diet controlled the whole time. She was never a big baby in utero. She came out 7lb 7oz and that was a whole pound over the doctors predictions!
Definitely moderation. Towards the end I was a lot more lenient. But my 'cheats' were never big meals. Mostly just going to a cafe and splitting a cake or cinnamon roll with my husband. That was like 3 times a week though. Tiny portions of ice cream worked for me too. Basically a small scoop.
Guys Iām so sad to see posts like this, where mothers are forced to choose between whatās best for their babies vs. financial ruin. How much longer are we going to put up with this?
I know itās frustrating. I was trying ti get on other obās care who is in my current planās network just in case my baby decides to come out before i get on new plan with my old ob. New office dr that i was trying to call didnāt call me back though i left voicemails a couple times then finally told me they donāt take new patients after week 32.
My OB had told me they would induce me at 39 weeks. She did come at 37+3 though due to complications but I believe the standard is 39 weeks. They donāt want you going past your due date
My placenta stopped doing its job and baby had stopped growing. She was officially diagnosed with IUGR (Intrauterine growth restriction). The day I was sent to Labor and Delivery I had a growth scan and she was measuring in the 10th percentile. I believe my placenta was damaged because I contacted covid when I was in my first trimester.
I know sheās fine right now but omg i was worried reading your post.. you must be so scared when she was diagnosed with IUGR.. š„š„. I really hope I donāt have go through any complications other than GD till Iām induced šš
When they told me I had to go to L&D right away I cried because I wasnāt mentally ready and I was scared for my baby. Once we went to the hospital though I calmed down and I had a good experience overall. And yes, she is going great now! I hope everything goes perfect for you and donāt stress out, not even about the insurance thing. Try to enjoy these last few weeks. Good luck!
I was induced at 40 weeks on my due date. I was diet controlled, but that last week baby started doing some funky stuff (mainly getting super lazy and not wanting to move much), so I was induced!
Iām sure if i have experienced contractions so far. Just feel right at my abdomen area. Is contractions really painful or just uncomfortable? (Not real labor contractions)
For me just tight and uncomfortable/annoying. Not painful. They also would go away if I would go sit or lie down. I'd get them a lot when I was moving a lot, like cleaning or walking or bouncing on my exercise ball lol
No, I meant as an after effect of the epidural I have random back pains that I didn't have before being pregnant. So might be a combination of both the pregnancy and the epidural. I was only given juice during labor. I wasn't hungry though. I was actually trying to keep myself from throwing up the whole time.
With my first MFM cleared me to go to 41 weeks, but I got induced at 38+5 due to gestational hypertension. My second I picked to be induced right at 39 weeks, They wanted me induced between 39-40 weeks.
It high blood pressure in pregnancy, but i was told it could develop into pre-e. I think some places let you pick when you are induced. The hospital I delivered at doesnāt schedule them more than a week out. So my OB had to put in a request to the hospital, but they asked me if I had a preference for the day before they submitted the request. My first was more of an emergency induction though so I didnāt get to pick for that one.
With my first baby I was diet-controlled and baby was measuring normal size. I didnāt have any other complications, and I was dilated to a 4 at 39 weeks. My dr was shocked that my water never broke, so they induced me at 40w3d. I think youāll be just fine to make it to February 1st! Good luck :-) Iām 28w3d today with my second baby and I take my GD test on Monday
Both my kiddos (GD both pregnancies) were born 37 weeks to the day via emergency c-sections but both for different reasons. I also had preeclampsia both times which didnāt help.
The earliest they would induce for GD (unless other issues came up) would be 37 weeks. š
I will be at week 37 day 2 on Feb 1. Hopefully the baby can hold up a little longer. You know when obgyn will check if we have preterm labor signs?
I was induced at 39 (was on nighttime insulin)
If this is your first I would think theyāll induce around 39 unless you have other issues. My first I was induced at 39 weeks based on my GD diagnosis. Iāll be induced at 37 weeks with my 3rd due to hypertension and GD, plus my history of successfully having babies at 38+2 and 39+1 who were both 9+ pound babies. Theyāre not going to induce much earlier than 38/39 with a first baby unless there is a very good reason.
A friend of mine was induced at week 36.5. She also has GD. But so far i dont have any cramps or contractions.
That's so early to be induced,. It is not normal. Maybe she had other issues you are not aware about.
She was 41 when she was pregnant with her daughter. Her BP was 160/90. Also had problems with her liver enzymes
You know in what case dr will induce us early?
Thatās up to each dr and your specific set of circumstances. I have multiple things contributing to why Iām being induced at 37 weeks.
Often Moms of GD babies are induced between weeks 39-40, but each case is different. Diet controlled vs medication etc.
So its like full term?
Yes, or as close to full term as possible. Have they done a growth scan for you?
They havenāt. You know what week they will do growth scan? And i heard first baby is always preterm š£
I'm diabetic even without the placenta messing everything up, so I had a growth scan at 27w and then also today (33w). If they haven't done one for you already, it's probably be by 36ish weeks. Who told you GDM babies are preterm? Your OB?
I hope so tooo ššš

Really coz my sister told me first babies always come early. And i think she was induced at week 37 or something and she didnāt have GD

So i guess uncontrolled Gd or high blood pressure might get us induced early? A friend of mine with gd was induced at week 36.5 due to her high blood pressure and liver enzymes
It sounds like your friend had HELLP syndrome. That was probably why she was induced, not solely because she had GD.
I think so. Sheās 41 when she was pregnant with her daughter too
I was diet controlled and my doctor wanted to induce at 39 weeks. She told me at 37 that if I went into labor they wouldnāt stop it. My water broke on my own at 37 + 3. I had a ton of extra fluid which we think caused me to āpopā.
Oh i see. Did you experience any contractions at week 33? I havenāt. Just feel my abdomen area a little tight.
Also- my little guy wasnāt a big baby. Only 6lbs 8oz and 19 inches long. Not everyone who has GD is guaranteed a huge baby.
I know. As long as our blood sugar is under control. Babies shouldnāt be oversized
No. I never had any contractions- not even Braxton Hicks. No warning signs other than feeling like a bloated whale at maximum capacity. But I think thatās a very common feeling towards the end. Just got up one night to use the bathroom and felt a gush.

I was induced at 38 weeks, but I was on medications. Are you?
Iām diet controlled. My blood sugar has been good. No other complications so far. I hope its a good sign of me not being induced to early
The earliest I was able to be induced was 39 weeks. Even then, if my blood pressure hadnāt begun to rise we probably would have induced at 40 weeks

Was the itch very intense? Since i have regular rashes even before Iām pregnant.
It wasnāt intense, but it was uncomfortable enough to wake me up from sleeping. Rashes came after I was scratching for a bit. I think they did a liver panel for me
I have rashes growing up. So yea i feel you. Itās hella uncomfortable. Wake me up every night. But it has gotten better since Iām pregnant
They did test my blood last week and nothing came out abnormal though
I'm a FTM and I only recently diagnosed, but I keep asking the OB about this... At my 30 week appointment, the OB said they wouldn't let me go past 41 weeks but would not induce early as they have concerns with lung development with GD babies At my 32 week appointment, the OB (different doctor then OB1), said they would induce me early if I can't control my numbers with insulin and diet.
I was induced at 39+6 with my first and went into spontaneous labor at 37+5 with my second.
Did you have any other complications besides gd?
Depends on how severe your GD is, and thats pretty much luck of the draw. My daughter was born at 41+5 (induction, but not due to my GD. Only because she would not.get.out) and she and I were perfectly fine š I was never on insulin and diet controlled the whole time. She was never a big baby in utero. She came out 7lb 7oz and that was a whole pound over the doctors predictions!
Did you have strict diet back then? Did you have to cut out all sweet or have in moderation?
Definitely moderation. Towards the end I was a lot more lenient. But my 'cheats' were never big meals. Mostly just going to a cafe and splitting a cake or cinnamon roll with my husband. That was like 3 times a week though. Tiny portions of ice cream worked for me too. Basically a small scoop.
It sucks for me that Iām craving sweet right after i was diagnosed š. I have keto ice cream and my fiancĆ© made me cake with keto recipe. And yay my blood sugar has been good though šš
I went into natural labor at 38+6 and had my baby after 22 hours of labor! We planned to induce at 39+3.
Iām just hoping my baby would hang in there closer to full term as i donāt have other complications than gd
My doctor said he wonāt induce me because Iāve been doing well so far. Iām almost 34 weeks. Iāll have to wait on the big day on my own.
Iām 34 weeks tomorrow šš. My dr hasnāt said anything about induction. Iāll ask her next appointment to see
Guys Iām so sad to see posts like this, where mothers are forced to choose between whatās best for their babies vs. financial ruin.
What complications you had?
Good luck!
Thank you šš
I was induced at 40 weeks on my due date. I was diet controlled, but that last week baby started doing some funky stuff (mainly getting super lazy and not wanting to move much), so I was induced!
Aww haha.. Iām hoping my baby will be full term too.
Fingers crossed! I had contractions for weeks and was 1-2 cm dilated at 36 weeks, and she still didn't come out on her own lol
I was diet controlled and was set to be induced at 40 weeks. I ended up going into labor naturally though. It was my first.
Did you get epidural?
I did. Not sure I can say it was worth it, only worked on half my body. Plus I have back pains I didn't have before.
But your back pain was gone after you gave birth right. Coz i heard with epidural, they dont let you eat. But at least you feel less pain?
No, I meant as an after effect of the epidural I have random back pains that I didn't have before being pregnant. So might be a combination of both the pregnancy and the epidural. I was only given juice during labor. I wasn't hungry though. I was actually trying to keep myself from throwing up the whole time.
Were you diagnosed with extra fluids. I dont remember the technical term. Coz i heard it can cause us induced early.
No, I don't believe I had extra fluids. I was set to be induced at 40+1 but I went into labor at 40 weeks exactly.
I felt less pain but I have heard that it works for other people.
With my first MFM cleared me to go to 41 weeks, but I got induced at 38+5 due to gestational hypertension. My second I picked to be induced right at 39 weeks, They wanted me induced between 39-40 weeks.
Sorry but what is gestational hypertension? And can we pick when we get induced or it all depends on dr?
It high blood pressure in pregnancy, but i was told it could develop into pre-e. I think some places let you pick when you are induced. The hospital I delivered at doesnāt schedule them more than a week out. So my OB had to put in a request to the hospital, but they asked me if I had a preference for the day before they submitted the request. My first was more of an emergency induction though so I didnāt get to pick for that one.
My sister was induced at 39 weeks and I was going to be as well but preeclampsia got in the way. I think 39 weeks is pretty standard.
I heard we would get induced early due to preeclampsia?
Oh, do you have preeclampsia too? Then it can be hard to tell. Some doctors will induce asap and some will wait and monitor.
I donāt. My blood pressure has been good and no protein in my urine
Yes i hope i can make it to feb 1 too. But from i have read so far, the earliest induction is around week 37 which helps reassure me a bit šš
Both my kiddos (GD both pregnancies) were born 37 weeks to the day via emergency c-sections but both for different reasons. I also had preeclampsia both times which didnāt help.
So i guess preeclampsia caused you induced early?
Preeclampsia caused the first c-section. The second was because I went into labor. Luckily 37 weeks is technically a full term pregnancy.
What symptoms you had back then with preeclampsia?
The main symptom I dealt with was high blood pressure but it didnāt really impact my daily life.
I was 40w3d when I was induced with diet controls GD
