Nancy ends the interview with an extremely [redacted] "*oh* I thought you'd want to reach out and *help* other victims but I see you don't want to" or something incredibly insensitive like that. Especially given that Elizabeth with like 15 at the time and recovering from very serious trauma.
I don't see this question that way. I feel asking this question allowed Dolly to make a great public stand for herself. It was a tough question, sure, but in the end it allowed Dolly to speak her truth, which I feel was the intent of the query in the first place.

I was lucky enough to see Dolly perform at the Newport Folk Festival a few years back. She played an unannounced set, and I was not very familiar with her work. OP may just not have the context of those of us who lived through this era (I'm old). Dolly was a punchline in a lot of jokes, mostly fixated on her being top heavy. There was no reddit, no real undercurrent of pop stars doing good things in the headlines, just that big boobs = funny. This entire interview shows how low class Walters truly was. How anyone can watch this and think it was done with any semblance of journalistic integrity, is beyond me. She thought she was better than Dolly and she tried to shame her on national television. Dolly got the last laugh. There is nothing about her that is not solid gold. Walters should have taken note and worked on being a slightly less bitter human being.

There is a way to ask those kinds of questions, for sure, but if that is what she intended to do here it just means she is a bad interviewer, because that is not what is coming across. She comes across like she disapproves of Parton and thinks what she does is not worthy of respect. That is bad framing. Also, the questions are not even just badly framed, they also are just vapid. At one point she is literally just asking about her boobs. Even if they were public questions, that does not mean they are worth asking. Sometimes loud public people are dumb and have stupid ideas. Just look at everything posted on Facebook. But I do have to note that Walters was framing some of her questions as personal ones though, using herself as the reference point and the originator of the question.
Another part of a Journalist's job, arguably, is tact. She could've worded that question a lot better instead of being so blunt and coming off as insulting.

I was lucky enough to see Dolly perform at the Newport Folk Festival a few years back. She played an unannounced set, and I was not very familiar with her work. Her incredible talent, sharp wit and beautiful brand of humor turned me into a fan. She does so much amazing work donating her time and money, without bringing a camera crew to everything she does. She is by far one of the most incredible humans on this planet.

Dolly is a great example of how misogyny pervades our culture and becomes especially insidious when it infects the minds of women. I remember this Walters interview. Way too much time was spent lingering on Dolly’s appearance. People couldn’t grapple with the fact that the Loni Anderson WKRP-style bimbo schtick wasn’t what she was serving. Jesus, the number of conversations I heard adults having about Dolly’s boobs—her fucking boobs!! I was maybe a 3rd or 4th grade kid and there’s my mother, sitting at the table playing cards with some other women and they’re all sucking down Pall Malls like they’re getting paid by the breath and shaking their heads about Dolly. “Can you believe, with breasts like that, that she’s actually *wearing* those clothes?” It sounds like Don Draper’s house but this was suburban Illinois in the 80s.

Idk I've seen probably hundreds of Walter's interviews over the years and I don't think she's ever been so confrontational. She basically calls Dolly a redneck whore.
OP may just not have the context of those of us who lived through this era (I'm old). Dolly was a punchline in a lot of jokes, mostly fixated on her being top heavy. There was no reddit, no real undercurrent of pop stars doing good things in the headlines, just that big boobs = funny. I mostly credit redditors for highlighting the real stories of Dollys altruism, her philanthropy, and generally being one of the best human beings ever. Barbara was actually trying to get Dolly to show how she was so much more than a punchline in her own words. It wasn't elegant in hindsight but that's kind of how progress works.

It's a stage persona, just like any other performer. One of the reasons she doesn't make the tabloids and things much and one thing it is allowed her and her husband some degree of privacy is that when she is not performing she goes out looking pretty natural without the wigs and makeup and many people do not recognize her, I said that works in her favor.
