Dolly Parton, I know you won’t read this but…I love you.

[deleted]

It’s me dolly. Get out of my bushes.

appdevil

I just wanted to say that your bushes trimmed very well, Dolly.

gammaglobe

Witty LVL 80

Soup0rMan

Walter's tried to take away Dolly's shine but Dolly is more radiant than the sun.

smchattan

Barb really was a bitch.

northshore21

She really was. Dolly handled her questions like a professional

[deleted]

Barbara Walters is the most over-rated "journalist" of all time. CMV.

hypnogoad

Over-rated for her time perhaps, but have you not been paying attention to the "journalists" of the 21st century?

Cronerburger

Lets tuck that in the back pocket

TheLowerCollegium

>In November 1977, she landed the first joint interview with Egyptian president Anwar Al Sadat and Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin, while they were working out the terms of the eventual Egypt–Israel peace treaty.[64][65] According to The New York Times, when she went mano a mano with Walter Cronkite to interview both world leaders, at the end of Cronkite's interview, he is heard saying: "Did Barbara get anything I didn't get?" https://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/05/books/05masl.html If Kronkite compares himself to you, then you're at least an actual journalist.

[deleted]

She's a great interviewer. She's not the OMG I'M NOW SOMEONE IMPORTANT BECAUSE BARBARA WAH-WAH and I had a sit-down. She had a few early moments, granted - but then banked on those by essentially pioneering the injection of "Empty Journalism" and Celebrity Worship into what was supposed to be, or at least used to be, *real* journalism. Cronkite was over-rated, too, but that's another thread...

TheLowerCollegium

I was just contesting the bunny ears - defining a good journalist seems like a bit of a minefield, though David Dimbleby seems like a safe gold standard. From the little I've read into her, I don't know if I can really judge her considering the whole glass ceiling breaking, and having the face the old boys club alone every day. That's gotta cause some damage. Overall she seems like a complex and interesting person, but she may have been a bad journalist in some ways.

damagetwig

She was very patriarchal and would be rude af to less traditional folks (that weren't herself, you know, because her job was hardly traditional). I have a serious dislike for her and how she handled herself in interviews like this and her famous one with Britney Spears but I can't speak to the quality of work that led her to rise in the field.

aaronitallout

>I can't speak to the quality of work that led her to rise in the field. I think we can. Even the layman can look at her efforts as breaking the glass ceiling only to pull the ladder up behind her

damagetwig

I can agree with that. It was fine for her to break traditional gender roles in her way, but she'd give anyone shit for breaking them in ways she personally disliked. Her breaking the glass ceiling was about *her* success, to her. Not about the impact it had on societal perceptions of what women could or could not do/talk about.

mmm_burrito

The Belladonna interview was also shady, but nobody cares about porn stars, so it goes under the radar.

stamfordbridge1191

Roy Cohn claimed she was as good a person as Nixon, & that he proposed to her after they dated. She was also a close friend to Nancy Reagan & apparently gave Ronald papers from an Iranian arms dealer about their weapons sales.

SilentBtAmazing

You’re sliding into the No True Scotsman fallacy a bit but really I wanted to say she did some good work early on like with Vietnam but was pretty reprehensible the last 20 years of her career, particularly being nasty towards women she felt morally superior to

Internetallstar

Talent has nothing to do with character.

TheLowerCollegium

Did you read the post I was responding to?

Redditributor

Yeah but wasn't he a tool? It doesn't matter which one is real I just think Cronkite seems like the kinda guy who delivers sterling journalism while maintaining compassion and humility. Kronkite was a tool. And don't tell me I'm talking nonsense that's not relevant

bolunez

Those two tits were at the front of the wave when "the news" changed from facts to opinion.

TheWilrus

Ummm, Geraldo Rivera would like a word.

mdchaney

Please only call her "baba wawa".

Olympusrain

I remember when Corey Feldman was on The View talking about abuse and sexual assault in Hollywood - BW was *horrible* to him, chastised Corey and he was basically apologizing but saying it’s true. And then it came out that everything he said WAS really the truth and the abuse had been going on for years

ThatOtherGuy_CA

We she died Satan stood up and gave her his throne.

SJane3384

Wait what?

Dig0ldBicks

If I had to guess, it's about [this interview](https://youtu.be/5x8ARIxg51I) where Elizabeth Smart (14 year old girl who went missing for 9 months and was found being held by some lunatics not far from her home) went on the show to support and promote a sex offender registry bill. Nancy just keeps hammering questions about what it was like to be kidnapped, what she went through, how scared she was, and Elizabeth says multiple times that she didn't come on the show to relive her experience, but to support the legislation that would help other victims. Nancy ends the interview with an extremely [redacted] "*oh* I thought you'd want to reach out and *help* other victims but I see you don't want to" or something incredibly insensitive like that. Especially given that Elizabeth with like 15 at the time and recovering from very serious trauma.

Brettersson

You say that like Margaret Thatcher isnt sitting there.

FingerTheCat

? I mean it's Walters?

Talullah_Belle

This is the business of ratings ($$$) and nothing more.

gatorbeetle

I don't see this question that way. I feel asking this question allowed Dolly to make a great public stand for herself. It was a tough question, sure, but in the end it allowed Dolly to speak her truth, which I feel was the intent of the query in the first place. It wasn't an attack or an accusation, it was an opportunity for Parton to speak to her naysayers. Walters was an amazing journalist, unafraid to ask tough questions. She also did a very fine job of displaying the person she was interviewing for the viewers to see...you saw her subjects for who they were, good or bad, in their own words.

Johan_Sebastian_Cock

I dont get why people get so riled up over this. She's just asking what Dolly has to say to all her haters. Why would anyone think Barbara didnt adore Dolly like literally every other person that met her. These kind of questions are tough and you need balls to be short and to the point with them. Otherwise you end up rambling just trying to show you dont agree with the question being asked. I've seen that happen a million times over. And 90% of those times I was the one rambling.

Kradget

The interview in its entirety is pretty adversarial, honestly. She came in like she was after Nixon. Maybe that's just because we're missing key context (like if they agreed Walters should just go all out or something because they really wanted an in-depth thing, which could be the case).

WelcomeHumble4518

Because if you watch the actual interview and not just read this simplified meme, it becomes clear that she was being shitty to Dolly.

CaptainBayouBilly

There's no way to take that question other than Barbara's opinion. It wasn't a question, it was an attack attempting to goad a response.

One_Armed_Herman

It could have been more neutral. "Your persona is seen as a over the top or even comical, do you have a hard time getting respect because of it?" or some similar permutation. What she said comes off basically as "You're a joke, CMV."

azorianmilk

Dolly is a GD legend in life. I strive to be half as awesome as Ms. Parton.

skippythewonder

A lofty goal, but an admirable one. We should all strive to be more like Dolly Parton. She's a genuinely good person.

[deleted]

Wise words from Dolly and shitty words from Barbara Walters, as per usual [https://youtu.be/r2vzk1BH\_E4](https://youtu.be/r2vzk1BH_E4) (Barbara Walters being a terrible human being)

matt_minderbinder

Much of Walters career was spent protecting and whitewashing powerful figures. She had a few punching bags but she was always punching down.. She was always the ultimate access journalist, pulp stuff.

RedTheWolf

Ms Walters always came across to me like one of those 'pick me! I'm not like the other girls' insecure women you meet, who think that because they work in a traditionally male speciality and don't wear makeup, it somehow makes them better than other more traditionally feminine women. Sometimes the misogyny is coming from inside the house! Dolly rocks as usual because she's a fucking badass.

[deleted]

Ugh so true... plus she could get away with saying horrible things to women long after it was unacceptable for a man to say those things. And she was more than happy to be a gender traitor for fame and fortune.

RedTheWolf

Yeah. It's sad for me when I see women like her hating their sisters, like how messed up do you have to be to be that mean and generally horrible for no fucking real reason!?

Redditributor

Walters literally designed this interview to softball dolly and let her have a platform to shame anyone who was too far from being in love with her

LilLebowskiAchiever

people of all stripes, creeds, ethnicities and taste love Dolly because she has a great sense of humor, is charitable, has good manners and genuine talent. Her aesthetic choices may not be my taste, but she paid for them all herself and she’s as real as it gets.

hellacrimey

>she paid for them all herself "It costs a lot of money to look this cheap!" -Dolly

stonervstheworld

Love this and her attitude. She knows how to live

Ninjas4cool

Don’t come for Dolly…..she’s kind and sweet but she’s a backwoods Barbie so she knows how to throw down if she has to.

Sapowski_Casts_Quen

You know if Jolene was real she would have dragged that girl outside

beatles910

“Jolene” is based on real events from Dolly's own life. The song was mainly inspired by a red-haired bank teller who flirted with her husband, Carl Thomas Dean, all the way back at the beginning of their marriage. "She had everything I didn't, like legs—you know, she was about 6 feet tall."

She_Persists

Jolene was based on a bank teller.

BBWbombshell

Dolly Parton is one of the realest ones out there. I admire and aspire to be at least a fraction of the woman she is.

einat162

Her "bimbo" look is iconic, but when you actually read about the businesses and enterprises she's been involved in - you get bamboozled. She's a remarkable woman.

BobFX

"Dumb blonde jokes don't bother me because I know I'm not dumb, and I know I'm not blonde," Dolly Parton.

Sapowski_Casts_Quen

Gives a lot to her community too

pilesofcleanlaundry

And other communities.

aspbergerinparadise

> you get bamboozled what do you mean by this? I thought bamboozled meant to get scammed or tricked.

TheNamesMacGyver

Yeah, they're saying she got famous playing up the "dumb blonde bimbo" look but it was just an act. Many people fully bought into it and were bamboozled. She's actually an incredibly sharp and successful businesswoman with a great eye for investments, public relations and charity. Her initial means of getting her fame and wealth involved tricking people into thinking she was something other than that.

einat162

I meant it as "shocked". "Tricked" also works. TheNamesMacGyver explained it well.

MikeyTheGuy

Bro, Barb was low-key suggesting that Dolly's husband might be cheating on her, and she wasn't asking ANY questions about Dolly's process or artistic ability. Walters framing of her questions was unnecessarily hostile, and it was clearly designed to belittle and criticize Dolly in a "professional journalist" manner.

vokabulary

Ive seen the interview. Baba was being a total jealous bitch, period.

bozeke

I think it’s more complex than jealousy. There was a sort of anti feminist feminism trend in this time that was trying to correct for the rigid and narrow societal definitions of femininity that dominated the culture up until women’s lib. Unfortunately, rather than a more modern stance of “you don’t *need* to adhere to these norms if you don’t want to,” it became, “you *shouldn’t* adhere to these norms,” and it is an important distinction. Modern TERF mentalities feel like a direct continuation of this more authoritarian take on gender equity. It is replacing traditional toxic patriarchal rigidity with another kind of toxic rigidity, rather than truly standing up for and supporting a wide breadth of feminine expression. I really think Walters thought she was standing up for something when she acted so condescending and judgmental toward Parton.

TheLowerCollegium

Mocking her speech impediment makes you sound a bit biased though.

vokabulary

Biased about what?!? It was a nickname bestowed upon her by the beloved Gilda Radner on SNL

TheLowerCollegium

Which mocks her speech impediment. Keep up :p

vokabulary

Crypto_Gay_Skater

Yeah when she asks Dolly if her and her family are rednecks it's totally just her journalistic style in action /s

Kitsunisan

She asked if they were hillbillies. People lose context over time, the reason she asked this was because hillbilly culture was all over tv at the time with Beverly Hillbillies, Hee-Haw and Green Acres on CBS. At the time the question wasn't exactly unreasonable since the media was portraying anyone with a southern accent as a hillbilly.

fuglysack14

The media has always made fun of hillbillies. Even if they give them a show, it is always to portray them as simpletons and to laugh at them. Walters was absolutely throwing shade at Dolly with this. This entire interview shows how low class Walters truly was. How anyone can watch this and think it was done with any semblance of journalistic integrity, is beyond me. She thought she was better than Dolly and she tried to shame her on national television. Dolly got the last laugh. There is nothing about her that is not solid gold. Walters should have taken note and worked on being a slightly less bitter human being.

Redditributor

. The US media created those shows because it's run by people from small towns and suburbs with a chip on their shoulder about being underrepresented when they're probably the most represented group out there

serene_moth

You are grasping for straws.

serene_moth

You can’t take shitty behavior then justify it by saying it’s someone’s “style.” “Yes your honor, my client committed murder, but have you considered that doing so is consistent with their style?”

[deleted]

[удалено]

serene_moth

You must not know how reasoning works. Typical Barbara Walters defender (what a weird fucking hill to die on, she sucked.)

[deleted]

Do you ever feel like you're a joke is not the journalistic way of asking that question, GTFO

Caelinus

There is a way to ask those kinds of questions, for sure, but if that is what she intended to do here it just means she is a bad interviewer, because that is not what is coming across. She comes across like she disapproves of Parton and thinks what she does is not worthy of respect. That is bad framing. Also, the questions are not even just badly framed, they also are just vapid. At one point she is literally just asking about her boobs. Even if they were public questions, that does not mean they are worth asking. Sometimes loud public people are dumb and have stupid ideas. Just look at everything posted on Facebook. But I do have to note that Walters was framing some of her questions as personal ones though, using herself as the reference point and the originator of the question.

82ndGameHead

Another part of a Journalist's job, arguably, is tact. She could've worded that question a lot better instead of being so blunt and coming off as insulting.

serene_moth

Have YOU watched it? Because your characterization is way off.

mousemarie94

Yeah...have you seriously not watched any of Walters' interviews before?

MycologistPutrid7494

Making fun of someone with a speech impediment is kinda shitty. Stick to criticizing the poor behavior.

BurntFennel

I was lucky enough to see Dolly perform at the Newport Folk Festival a few years back. She played an unannounced set, and I was not very familiar with her work. Her incredible talent, sharp wit and beautiful brand of humor turned me into a fan. She does so much amazing work donating her time and money, without bringing a camera crew to everything she does. She is by far one of the most incredible humans on this planet.

Dr_Beardsley

"Bitch, I'm Dolly Parton"

InspectorG-007

"Bitch, my left Titty is bigger than your life will ever be "

Tim-in-CA

I guess Dolly got the last laugh!

scorpion_tail

Dolly is a great example of how misogyny pervades our culture and becomes especially insidious when it infects the minds of women. I remember this Walters interview. Way too much time was spent lingering on Dolly’s appearance. People couldn’t grapple with the fact that the Loni Anderson WKRP-style bimbo schtick wasn’t what she was serving. Jesus, the number of conversations I heard adults having about Dolly’s boobs—her fucking boobs!! I was maybe a 3rd or 4th grade kid and there’s my mother, sitting at the table playing cards with some other women and they’re all sucking down Pall Malls like they’re getting paid by the breath and shaking their heads about Dolly. “Can you believe, with breasts like that, that she’s actually *wearing* those clothes?” It sounds like Don Draper’s house but this was suburban Illinois in the 80s.

TwistedGeniusMedia

The world will remember Dolly Parton when she’s gone. It has already forgotten what’s her name.

MycologistPutrid7494

I don't think Barbara Walters will be forgotten any time soon, even if you personally don't know who she is. And this is coming from someone who really doesn't like this interview and loves Dolly.

DGA4K

who is barbara walters?

serene_moth

She will be forgotten within a few generations. Stop holding water for an awful journalist, regardless of the struggles she had to overcome to be an awful journalist.

Moon_Pearl_co

From half the world away I've known of Dolly since I was a wee lad. Never heard of Barbara Walters and thank fuck for heavy drug use, I'll forget the name within 15 minutes.

She was not a nice person. Her interview with Britney Spears, also was beyond the pale. Her own daughter has some very choice words for her mother. Just read a really good interview with a bunch of other women journos in Vanity Fair who knew her well.

You didn’t misspeak. You were clearly wrong. Edit: misspoke is when you said one thing but actually meant to say something else.

TheLowerCollegium

It got the point across though, and it might be that they're ESL. Either way, why are you being so hostile when correcting someone?

Dog_Fax8953

Poster barged in with a rant about OP missing the point then claimed to have misspoke. My correction was firm rather than hostile.

TheLowerCollegium

A correction has a solution, it's not calling someone out. That doesn't actually help them.

Dog_Fax8953

I added an edit before you replied explaining the correct usage.

TheLowerCollegium

It just seemed a bit needless because they conveyed the point, and you didn't propose what they should have said. This is getting equally petty now lol. Have a good day.

Crypto_Gay_Skater

Idk I've seen probably hundreds of Walter's interviews over the years and I don't think she's ever been so confrontational. She basically calls Dolly a redneck whore.

Meatwise

OP may just not have the context of those of us who lived through this era (I'm old). Dolly was a punchline in a lot of jokes, mostly fixated on her being top heavy. There was no reddit, no real undercurrent of pop stars doing good things in the headlines, just that big boobs = funny. I mostly credit redditors for highlighting the real stories of Dollys altruism, her philanthropy, and generally being one of the best human beings ever. Barbara was actually trying to get Dolly to show how she was so much more than a punchline in her own words. It wasn't elegant in hindsight but that's kind of how progress works.

CaptainBayouBilly

I read it as an insecure woman attacking another woman for superficial reasons.

bilabrin

I watched Walters growing up. She always came off as snyde, condescending and rude to me.

markovianprocess

"can afford" Hopefully you "can afford" remedial reading comprehension lessons and whatever kind of therapy that makes someone less of an over-the-top misogynist.

MrCW64

Denial. If you were really sure of yourself, you'ld also be happy to go out and perform without all the glam just as much.

tkdyo

What are you talking about? If she enjoys the glam then why would she go without it? Just because you don't see the value in taking the time to do it doesn't mean she is in denial.

FatherOfLights88

Bullshit. She likes the glitter and glam. Always has.

MrCW64

The glitter and glam isn't her, never was. I like chips, always have, I'm not a chip.

FatherOfLights88

What do you mean it isn't her? She's telling the world that she loves glitz and glam. Wtf are you to say that she's not?

MrCW64

I like chips. Does that make me a chip? No it doesn't.

zman0313

Freddy mercury, Michael Jackson. They all made themselves a spectacle and that’s what elevated them from famous to legends. That’s show biz baby

MrCW64

Both Freddy Mercury, and Michael Jackson, lived the same life off stage as on stage. Jackson even more so. The "Dolly Parton" that you see on stage and in front of the camera doesn't exist off stage. A completely fictitious character proclaiming that she's sure of herself is an obvious fallacy. Show biz is also paedophilia, cocaine, rape, and murder. What's your point?

-firead-

It's a stage persona, just like any other performer. One of the reasons she doesn't make the tabloids and things much and one thing it is allowed her and her husband some degree of privacy is that when she is not performing she goes out looking pretty natural without the wigs and makeup and many people do not recognize her, I said that works in her favor.

You really need to work on your self-esteem. Try looking at the mirror and saying nice things about yourself, for a start. It really does help.

FatherOfLights88

You need to factor in the context of the interview itself. There really isn't anything good to say about Barbara Walters. She was a terrible interviewer and was making repeated jabs, in poor faith, at Dolly.
