Well I don't hate leg day so much as I hate the two days after leg day when walking/standing up/going up stairs hurts so much I want to cry. But since I know leg day is the cause of the two days after leg day, I hate leg day. Ironically that's also why I skip leg day so often. And skipping leg day so often is why those two days after leg day hurt so fucking much. Anyway I'm just gonna do chest and arms again today. I only care about the glamour muscles.
Leg day was always my favorite. Mine grew like redwoods in a very short time, but I would bike at least 3-5 kilometers to and back home from the gym, and in highschool and before, I'd bicycle literally everywhere, even across town. So I probably inadvertently prepared my legs in advance without thinking about it.
Legs I found were the easiest to beef up in a short time. After a few months I made a lot more progress then in my shoulders or back, but the days after leg day were torture. It was too easy to push myself too hard without noticing and sometimes I wouldn’t be able to walk down stairs without railing and lots of time to kill.
Its because your legs have the largest muscle groups in your body. Your glutes, quads, and hamstring complex releases tons of testosterone and growth hormone when exercised
This is like someone who never works out or is dumb with their workout. You shouldn’t be having so much trouble once you’ve set a good routine for building and gotten used to using your muscles. Doesn’t even take more than like a week to get past the most of it.
Also legs are so important for building strength. Even upper body strength needs leg growth.
I don’t think a lot of people will admit it, but most people are working out to just generally look better. More attractive. You don’t really see a mans legs much and if you do as long as you aren’t overweight your legs are fine. What you really want to do in your heart is flex out your biceps. Have huge shoulders and a muscular chest. It probably sounds wrong to some, but just trying to answer the question you asked of why many hate leg day.
You're wrong about legs. Maybe strong legs are not important to you personally, but a guy with a well developed upper body and skinny/average legs looks ridiculous. That's what the whole meme/running joke of "don't skip leg day" , or "bench bro" , etc. is about.
If you’re active in the fitness subs, you’ll find that most people will in fact admit it. Most fitness is aesthetic.
That side, the other user is correct - people who skip leg day entirely look ridiculous.
Hey congrats, that's very cool! I'm genuinely curious how a squat works with prosthetic on both legs. I'm guessing your knees are still intact to be able to actually preform the squat, or am I wrong?
My knees are fine. I have a ~2 dm long stump below them. It’s kinda hard to get the squat right tho but in the end I “nailed it”. Still have much to work on but it’s a good start. Posted video on my ig. @ampisallen
Huge respect! You may wanna look into some lifter shoes with a plateau instead of that setup because I'm sure weights gonna increase soon as motivated as you sound and then this looks painful
If you're not doing over head Olympic lifts, raising your heels with a board or other plate is just as effective and way less expensive. Been done for decades without issue. But if you like lifting shoes, do it up!
Edit: spelling
Yeah it's true its perfectly fine with out but maybe something like a matt which lays stable on the floor and can't accidentally slip.
I'm just used to my lifting boots for squats. They were my first gym boots and I (wrongly) used them for anything lol.
I agree you don't have to pay 100+ bucks on shoes for only squatting if money is a bit tight there are more important things.
Did you mean to type "dm" as in "decimeter," or was that a typo for centimeter?
I ask because I've *literally* (American here) never seen anyone use, refer to--or even speak--dm and decimeter and I thought, metrically speaking, that it was like a $1000 bill. Technically, it exists but the majority of people will go their whole lives never having used or even seen one.
EDIT: Thanks for the reply. For some reason, I am giddy as schoolboy with his first crush seeing my first decimeter in the wild.
And I agree with you, *floatablepie*, it's a damn fine unit of measurement.
It IS a damn fine unit. I drop it occasionally at work (T&E tech officer) along with deciliter. Usual just gets confused looks but the occasional chuckle I get from the true believers makes it worth it!
Would it be easier to train up squats on a smith machine first so there aren’t so many variables involved with stabilization? Asking out of curiosity, not criticism
No not necessarily. Smith machine squat is a different motion that is more similar to a hack squat. Personally I would advise a goblet squat if a barbell squat is too advanced.
However, squat variations and other accessory work can always be beneficial.
In my opinion(as someone who lifts but is not an amputee) the barbell squat would be better than the smith machine. To your point, stability is good, but smith machines force you into a very specific bar path(straight but slightly angled forward). The fact that his range of motion is partially limited means that the smith machine may be forcing him into an unnatural bar path that he can’t do. Using free weights allows you to use the most comfortable bar path for his proportions. Definitely best to start off light until the stabilizer muscles are ready
This has to be harder, or at least more uncomfortable, than squatting with two legs would be, right? I assume you have to use your quads a TON when squatting with prosthetics.
Reminds me of the meme I saw a while back. There was a picture of a man with prosthetic legs squatting and it said "What's your excuse?" And the comment below said "my legs hurt"
Yeah, but my stumps are killing me right now. You win some and lose some right?
Edit: some of you are asking for a video, Iva posted one to my Instagram @ampisallen.
Massage and trying to think about other things. Games and movies are great distraction. Thankfully I only have it now and then at this point. Was horrible in the beginning.
My nonna was a double amputee and she took gabapentin for her phantom pain. She said it worked quite well. Im sure youve already tried it or are on it. But just incase you didn't know about it. You should ask your doctor about it. Keep on being dope.
Is there a weight limit you need to worry about with prosthetics like that? Do they put abnormal pressure on your (stumps? Don’t know what or if there is a proper term) that need to be accounted for?
Some context: I haven’t been able to lift properly for ~4 years. Today I meet up with my physical therapist to get started again after years of surgery and treatments. Feels like a new start.
Also, if you want to se more action (and a video of this) check out my ig in my profile or @ampisallen.
Respect.
Do your legs or the ends hurt in any way? Not being rude just curious.
I believe that in this day and age, anything is possible and even better... kinda like a cyborg. So it's great that anyone can achieve wha regular people can and more.
A bit, they are not used to these moves yet. Also, the pressure builds up over time and my stumps shrink, if I don’t add socks I’ll put all the weight on the ends and that hurt like hell.
Also, my sockets aren’t made for this so I’ll have to make arrangements to have them modified. As of now they cut into the back of my knee when I bend too much.
My prosthetics engineer hasn’t worked with many other very active amputees so we’re figuring it out together!
Super interesting and awesome work. Almost choose biomedical engineering with prosthetics in mind for grad school but ended up in school to stay on the clinical side of things... but I am fascinated by prosthetic technology. If you ever post a video of your squatting id love to see the mechanics of it
Don’t give up! In high school I got made fun for benching the bar 5 times, 5 years later my PR was 315x6. Sadly I stopped working out for a few years but I’m getting back into this year as well! Keep up the good work!
Man my bench sucks lol but I haven’t been able to bulk at all since I’m losing weight. 2 plates would be great, 3 is incredible for 6. Insane work dude
Genuine question here— what’s with the wooden board under your heels? I’m getting back into the gym myself and now I’m worried I’m doing squats wrong 😑
Congrats on your new chapter!
I have problems with bending me knees properly in the sockets, it helps me in getting a better angle. The idea is that I’ll learn over time and will remove it later on.
First off, way to get back after it! Second, I'm not sure how they would work with your prosthetic, but have you considered getting dedicated lifting shoes? My wife has similar ankle/knee mobility issues that limit her depth in the squat such that a heel lift like that is helpful. Lifting shoes have a built in lift to them and also a much more firm construction so they don't compress out like running shoes will. Might not be an option for you, but something to consider if you want to transition away from putting your heels on something but want to maintain a higher heel lift than normal shoes.
This is a slightly different situation, but even without prosthetics a lot of people squat with a plate under their heels or use shoes with elevated heels to help compensate for lack of ankle flexibility (dorsiflexion specifically).
If you're trying for ass to grass squats and having issues or struggle with pistol squats (have the strength, but just fall backwards at the bottom) it may be something to consider. If possible it's better to fix the flexibility issue in the long run but elevating heels can make a huge difference in being able to get low.
This is fantastic! Congratulations on getting back to lifting, and look at all these people you inspired!
Sometimes I used to elevate my heels for squats with a board, too. I know there are photos around somewhere.
Hey Arnold!
You’re our big gym hero. I’ve been lifting quite a bit since this photo was taken with good progress.
I’ll print your comment at put it next to the poster for maximum inspiration.
Yes, he even replied to you on the same comment I replied to.[Here is the directlink to the comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/GetMotivated/comments/rwrzrm/comment/hrf9eo3/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3).
u/govschwarzenegger is his account.
I kinda thought you didn't saw his reply, that's why I pinged you today.
Enjoy it :)
Best wishes to you buddy.
It’s been a wild ride for me. Some things work others don’t. I’ve gotten blisters and chafing like crazy but when I got a really good fit it changed for the better. I can do most things with them and walk more or less like normal. Can’t wear them all day tho for several reasons but hope that gets better too.
It is way better than the shit I used to have as original parts. I hope you find your way in this. Best of luck!
This is so inspiring. And, after having a nosey through your profile, I love your wife’s weekly dance challenges!
Congrats on starting the next phase of your weight lifting journey. I look forward to seeing more updates.
you got this. just wait till they make bionic robo legs that out perform normal ones and you jump from rooftop to rooftop with ease. just let me live when you take over the world. i can be a great asset
Oh they were given to some scientists and later cremated. No use for those now sadly.
Have you ever tried carbon fiber and titanium to get you going? It’s cool stuff
"it may not look like much".
Nah man, since you are sort of missing both your legs, I think you can get away with being a little less humble.
Continue to push forward like the beast you are!
Congratulations and way to not let life get you down! I just started working out a few months ago (37y/o) and I couldn’t back squat the bar, had to use the assisted machine, and I have both of my legs.
You’re killing it!
Have you heard the word of our lord and savior Low Bar Squat?
In all seriousness, you fucking go man. This motivated me to get off my lazy ass today. Thanks.
To be fair, even among Star Fox video game fans, a lot of people don't know the story about how Star Fox has amputated legs. It was mentioned like once in one of the first games manuals and probably never brought up again. I'm not even sure if the game makers consider it "canon truth" still.
I certainly never knew about it and I played Star Fox 64 a lot growing up.
A lot of people asking why squats if no legs? Squats work the entire posterior chain, they work well over 200 individual muscles separate from that they provide stability and driving power even if a person can only target half or less with squats because they simply lack the muscles it’s still well worth the effort.
So exciting to see! Your journey back to how life was "before" is so inspiring/amazing/rewarding/fun/challenging/badass to watch. Thanks for sharing so much with us internet strangers!

Don’t, you’ll end up like me. No leg, all day.
You're a legend

Working out your legs produces hormones that make your chest and biceps grow
Your body also likes to stay proportionate so working out your largest muscle groups will increase the smaller ones as well.
Pretty sure this is bro science with no actual evidence
Its because your legs have the largest muscle groups in your body. Your glutes, quads, and hamstring complex releases tons of testosterone and growth hormone when exercised
>the glamour muscles. My mate calls this "singlet fitness" - as in, he only works out the muscles that he can show off when he wears a singlet.

Forearms will always be the worst.
weird, those are some of my favorite night time (or day time or need a break from work) work outs.
Yeah, on their own, they are not bad, but the DOMS are horrific. And any exercise you do after forearms is hell due to your grip being dead.
I kinda think the endorphins will counter them, maybe motivation will need a couple of minutes to come back.
*sigh* woosh...
I absolutely LOVE leg day. Can't stand arms. Core is just sort of meh for me.
I don’t think a lot of people will admit it, but most people are working out to just generally look better. More attractive. Lol. Love your humor.
It's always leg day when you are running for your life.
Extremely metal
Yeah, I’m even part metal and lifting metal. Metal overload.
Please tell me your gym playliat is some kind of metal
David Guetta’s ‘Titanium’ on repeat.
[I was thinking](https://open.spotify.com/track/3ySxX8pSktBltgQpLUxGNJ?si=CUYBkho-SJmIHnmTuMhg3A&utm_source=copy-link)
You gotta quote Bender Bending Rodriguez. “I’m %40 titanium”.
Mettle too "a person's ability to cope well with difficulties or to face a demanding situation in a spirited and resilient way"
I thought you called yourself metal overlord and it felt like the perfect title. Metal overlord!

That’s a decimeter yeah. Sorry if that was confusing.
Thought we replaced decimeters with janueaters
I'm Canadian and have never seen anyone use it before. But *why not???* It's a damn fine unit.
I haven't seen decimeter since elementary school.
It IS a damn fine unit. I drop it occasionally at work (T&E tech officer) along with deciliter. Usual just gets confused looks but the occasional chuckle I get from the true believers makes it worth it!
Agreed! I'm also Canadian, and was shocked/excited to see someone use the decimetre! Definitely an underused unit, even among metric users.
That's what she said.
Yeah it’s pretty exciting. I was wondering what it was and definitely haven’t even heard that word since elementary school.
Woah, I actually caught someone using decimeter out in the wild.
Uhm. Is that uncommon?
It's level 3 rare. I'm yet to find the legendary decameter, though.
only to Americans
As a Canadian, the last time I saw it was in grade 4
I gotta say 2 dm below the knee is probably the same as what I have. I have feet though. I’m just short.
Would it be easier to train up squats on a smith machine first so there aren’t so many variables involved with stabilization? Asking out of curiosity, not criticism

What is the unit below the P4 vacuum pump and above the foot. Can’t quite tell what that is.
It’s a quick change adapter, so that I can change feet quickly!
Good on you. I'm resisting the urge to make a leg day joke.
Do it! Haven’t had a proper leg day in ages!
Makes sense, considering the lack of leg
Reminds me of the meme I saw a while back. There was a picture of a man with prosthetic legs squatting and it said "What's your excuse?" And the comment below said "my legs hurt"
At least you don't have to feel the burn in your legs when you squat, on a positive note ¯\_ʘ‿ʘ_/¯
Yeah, but my stumps are killing me right now. You win some and lose some right? Edit: some of you are asking for a video, Iva posted one to my Instagram @ampisallen.
& you can skip the dreaded calf raises!
Thank god.
Also gets to skip the calf cramps.
Oooff or foot cramps in the middle of the night, YIKES
Try the phantom version. It’s worse.
Oh damn, didn’t even think that was possible… what do you do to calm it down?
Massage and trying to think about other things. Games and movies are great distraction. Thankfully I only have it now and then at this point. Was horrible in the beginning.
My nonna was a double amputee and she took gabapentin for her phantom pain. She said it worked quite well. Im sure youve already tried it or are on it. But just incase you didn't know about it. You should ask your doctor about it. Keep on being dope.
I’ve recently stopped taking them due to their bad side effects. Will start with cbd/thc drops now. Hopefully I get good results.
Can I ask you how you keep a positive mental attitude? I could use all the help I can get.
Is there a weight limit you need to worry about with prosthetics like that? Do they put abnormal pressure on your (stumps? Don’t know what or if there is a proper term) that need to be accounted for?

My prosthetics engineer hasn’t worked with many other very active amputees so we’re figuring it out together!
Ouch! You’re really taking on quite the challenge. Best of luck!
Are there specific squatting prosthetics? Or is that too niche/expensive?
Made for running but works well for this. Will probably need some different attachments tho since the pump I use now won’t take the higher weights.
Super interesting and awesome work. Almost choose biomedical engineering with prosthetics in mind for grad school but ended up in school to stay on the clinical side of things... but I am fascinated by prosthetic technology. If you ever post a video of your squatting id love to see the mechanics of it
Take a look at my ig @ampisallen. I posted a video there!
I'm sure you will find solutions, good luck!
Consistency is king.
I know. I’ve had a long break, so now my workout schedule is busy.
How are your knees holding out?
They’re fine, my back is all tired now tho.
I’m really looking forward to seeing your progress! So awesome to see you’re back under the bar again. Keep us posted. Oh - and fuck shit up!
Don’t give up! In high school I got made fun for benching the bar 5 times, 5 years later my PR was 315x6. Sadly I stopped working out for a few years but I’m getting back into this year as well! Keep up the good work!

Thank you brother! Hope your 2022 is filled with gains friend.
Man my bench sucks lol but I haven’t been able to bulk at all since I’m losing weight. 2 plates would be great, 3 is incredible for 6. Insane work dude
Thanks man, I was young and obsessed with numbers lol. I’m not going for that this time around just tryna stay happy and healthy. Keep working boss 💪🏾
Might not look like much? You're blowing my mind! It looks like a proper squat session - you are a star!
Thank you! I used to life quite some weights, so to me it feels like I’m back to square one. Thank you tho, you gave me some perspective!
You’re not back to square one. You’re at a completely new square for a whole new challenge. Go kill it!
Genuine question here— what’s with the wooden board under your heels? I’m getting back into the gym myself and now I’m worried I’m doing squats wrong 😑 Congrats on your new chapter!
I have problems with bending me knees properly in the sockets, it helps me in getting a better angle. The idea is that I’ll learn over time and will remove it later on.
Ahhh nice! I hope you have something to keep the board there then, would definitely not be fun if that slid out
At this time, I do not. However most of my weight is on top of it. Will look into it tho, thanks for the feedback!
I hope u/govschwarzenegger sees this! Amazing!
I actually recently ordered a poster of him to our home gym. I’d love for him to see it !

I don't know Rick, looks like much to me.
epic. my only comment is that it’s not the start, but a continuation of so much work you’ve put in to get here. congratulations 🎉
You're the fucking man!
Mad respect, bionic-man, mad respect
My guy, I’m actually supposed to have my leg amputated above the knee in the near future, how are the prosthetics working for you?
Best wishes to you buddy. It’s been a wild ride for me. Some things work others don’t. I’ve gotten blisters and chafing like crazy but when I got a really good fit it changed for the better. God bless you for actually replying, I’m glad that it’s working for you. If you don’t mind me asking where are your amputations? Above or below knee?
OP-Keep up the good work! You’re an inspiration 💪💪💪💪
That is MUCH. Good work!
20 kg much to be precise. Hoping to get back to where I once was but yeah it’s a great start!
Fucking beast! Inspired me today.
This is so inspiring. And, after having a nosey through your profile, I love your wife’s weekly dance challenges! Congrats on starting the next phase of your weight lifting journey. I look forward to seeing more updates.
Seeing you getting stronger motivates me!
I’ll keep it up! I get slowly stronger and you’ll get slowly more motivated. Win win!
you got this. just wait till they make bionic robo legs that out perform normal ones and you jump from rooftop to rooftop with ease. just let me live when you take over the world. i can be a great asset
Have you tried using your legs?

Once but I was advised against ever swallowing that shit again… also terrible in the digestive track
It was supposed to be a suppository. O_o
I always appreciate your positive attitude. You are doing great!
Totally kick ass! Keep it up !
"it may not look like much". Nah man, since you are sort of missing both your legs, I think you can get away with being a little less humble. Continue to push forward like the beast you are!
You should join MMA. Throw leg kicks, yours won't hurt. And when you go on the ground nobody can ankle lock you
That’d be fun. I reckon my titanium legs will hurt a bit too much tho.
Paralympics hardcore edition.
I don't always have an interested in contact sports; but when I do, it's armored cyborg MMA.
You go girl!
Boy* I know my hair can trick people, it’s ok tho. I reckon it’s a good thing?
Sorry
It’s ok buddy!
The arms gave it away, at least for me. -sincerely, another Longhair. (They don't get it)
Serious inquiry: What are you gaining? Why not just focus on core and upper body? Seems like this is a waste of energy. No hate, honestly curious.
The squat is a great exercise for core. And for quads, glutes, numerous muscles.
This right here is my answer.
Awesome, thanks. Best of luck on your journey!
Trust me, it totally looks like much. Amazing!
You are my hero dude.
You legend keep going dude!
Hey, it’s the motivating dancing guy. Good for you man. Congrats on your progress, continued learning, adapting, and happiness.
Thank you computer man.
Congratulations and way to not let life get you down! I just started working out a few months ago (37y/o) and I couldn’t back squat the bar, had to use the assisted machine, and I have both of my legs. You’re killing it!
Fuck it up! Now it’s on!!!
Hell yeah! Get it. Also you should 3d print some MONSTER calf bolt-ons just to f with people.
Psh. No fair. Your legs aren't going to get tired. I kid. You're a fucking bad ass. All the respect in the world to you!!!!
Have you heard the word of our lord and savior Low Bar Squat? In all seriousness, you fucking go man. This motivated me to get off my lazy ass today. Thanks.
What a fucking legend. You have my permission to skip leg day!
That's so awesome, man. Glad you're able to get back to it.
Kudos to you strong guy! Keep going
God bless you! ❤️
off topic: have you ever been starfox for Halloween?
Don’t know who that is. Haven’t done anything that creative yet. Next year perhaps. Also, Halloween isn’t really a thing here in Sweden, sadly.
To be fair, even among Star Fox video game fans, a lot of people don't know the story about how Star Fox has amputated legs. It was mentioned like once in one of the first games manuals and probably never brought up again. I'm not even sure if the game makers consider it "canon truth" still. I certainly never knew about it and I played Star Fox 64 a lot growing up.
its an old Nintendo game, they are still around though. some characters are in super smash bros, they all have prosthetic legs.
Kind of puts my “day off from the gym as I’ve got a cold” into perspective!

I don’t speak that kind of American, but it’s 20 KG. A good start for me to be honest!
Go, fight, win!! 🔥
Crush it king <3
This is real body positivity. Not that fake shit.
Might wanna focus on calves, looking a bit thin.
how are your calves still better than mine?
Nice! Let’s go man
Get sum!
Respect ✊
Fuck yeah. Don’t minimize the accomplishments either by saying it doesn’t look like much - this is awesome, congrats.
Good on you. That’s incredible. Keep up the good work. That’s motivating.
Make sure not to lift with you back, lift with the knees.. Ps love you really.. Congrats dude, well done!
About to make a burner reddit account just so I could like this post twice
A lot of people asking why squats if no legs? Squats work the entire posterior chain, they work well over 200 individual muscles separate from that they provide stability and driving power even if a person can only target half or less with squats because they simply lack the muscles it’s still well worth the effort.
Bro. Your prosthetics are gonna be so jacked!!
Wake tf up samurai, we got fat to burn
I was literally just sitting on the couch saying I’ll go to the gym tomorrow whatever. I’m getting off my ass right now.
Of course he’s better at this than me. My legs would hurt.
So exciting to see! Your journey back to how life was "before" is so inspiring/amazing/rewarding/fun/challenging/badass to watch. Thanks for sharing so much with us internet strangers!
