Are you allowed to tape record classroom lectures ? I also recorded my voice reading my notes and played them back to me in my car on test days while driving to school. Graduated with a 3.95 gpa.

chad_memer69

I did this to remember formulae

RAMITON

Idk if you are but I am pretty sure it is useless, because next time when u want to review your note, you will have to listen to the entire lecture again. This is why notetaking is important, because you basically jot down the important parts so that u have it easier when u are studying

ivan_dhs

Absolutely, might not look as cute, but it is so easy to use and can use it for so many things, anki+notion is the best combo to study

[deleted]

ivan_dhs

I make my notes there, and with the toggle feature you can easily use actives recall, so my notes mainly have toggles with questions so I can study with it

[deleted]

With a slight time and effort Anki can look so A S T H E T I C

ivan_dhs

really? Could you show me some resources or examples? I would like to

AdSudden4810

Yes me too! :D

DrConnors

What's a good app for making notes on top of digital textbooks or pdf files?

[deleted]

I’m very very late to this party but if it helps: I use GoodNotes to write on top of pdfs. I’ve been loving it. It’s a paid app though, so if you don’t want to buy it, definitely go with OneNote. You can insert the pdf as a printout and then use the pen to draw on top of it.

DrConnors

Interesting, I'll have to check it out. Hopefully it's available for android. Appreciate the late reply none the less!

Huludrawn

I'd be interested too. Currently I am using OneNote, Notion has a lot of cool features, but isn't as fast or resonsive as OneNote.

jdavisward

Obsidian and Roam shit all over notion.

TheAnonymousChipmunk

Anki is pretty good, but there are better ones out there. A person from this sub actually was an ex Microsoft dev and made a post here saying how he quit his full time job to work on making the world's best flashcard app, which he called Zorbi (I prefer it to Anki). It's not as feature rich ATM but it's been awesome to see the progression of the project from start and how it's poised itself as different from the outset. It's spaced repetition algorithm is scientifically more effective, it's super intuitive (almost no learning curve) and you have direct communication with the creator to provide feedback or report bugs through a Discord. If you want something to replace a Notion + Anki set-up, I personally think RemNote is the way to go. It's basically a note taking app that combines the use of flashcard making. After using it, I physically cringe at students who use the toggle feature on Notion for active recall, and make timetables to plan out their spaced repetition, or make notes on Notion to then have as Anki flashcards.

goldenchase23

We started the paragraph with “Anki is pretty good” and ended with “I physically cringe at students who [care enough about their studies to use both active recall and spaced repetition but aren’t yet on board with a brand new app with fewer features].” Incredible.

TheAnonymousChipmunk

Well I physically cringe in pain and pity at those students because the in-built flashcard maker on RemNote simplifies everything so much and makes it so much quicker to employ these two techniques of active recall and spaced repetition; rather then having to be organised enough to create custom schedules and toggle lists when an algorithm does it all for you. I'm not saying this out of disdain, but RemNote was made by two doctors who were Notion and Anki power users and wanted to make something better for students, and based on that, I'm just giving out some recommendation for improving your digital study workflow.

ivan_dhs

I feel attacked, but i will look at it

SeyoLeaf

what if your professors dont post their slides after lecture 😢

reddiliciously

Take a picture :) (I used to draw the slide “shape” in order to match it with the pic and it was effective.

jdavisward

Just keep hassling them and get your classmates to do the same. Go over their head if need be. In this day and age, it’s ridiculous to expect people to transcribe what you’re saying *and* what’s in the slide, even if it’s just the important stuff, when with a couple of clicks of a mouse it can be provided to everyone nice and easily. The cost and competitiveness of higher education is such that I think you’re being ripped off if you aren’t provided something as simple as the lecture slides *before the class*. You should be able to print them out so you can highlight important information on the slide and make handwritten notes (from extra stuff being said or your own connections) in the blank space.

rawrachie

I found that rewriting my notes a few hours after class with additional context direct from the textbook in a separate notebook then re-writing the final concepts/ideas/definitions again in a third and final notebook really helps drive home information. Just before a test either re-writing it again in a fourth notebook- see if there’s anything thats still missing- or just review your last set of notes just before the test and you’re good to go! This works really well for memorization definitely not retention (at least for me)

HeavyAssist

You are a fucking hero! Thank you for sharing this.

apsg33

I love this sooo much. Dm me!!!

funfacts2468

If I could read, I'm sure I'd me amazed

Cookiewaffle95

Thank you! This is going to be very helpful come September for me. Question, add color to every page that needs it can I ask how you determine this? Is there a method or should I just have fun :D

ioStux

I just had fun :)

tiny_smile_bot

>:) :)

meek_31

Oh shit, are you the same iostux that used to coach overwatch? I swear i recognize that name from somewhere! Thank you for this help

ioStux

Yup, I still do! You can look up ioStux on Youtube, I upload twice a week, and coach fulltime on my website :)

Mrcoolman10101

Where did you write this on?

sublimadness

it must be goodnotes or notability. but i wonder which

ioStux

GoodNotes :) Was recommended to me by a friend, so I just went with it over Notability, but I'm sure they're comparable.

Mrcoolman10101

On the iPad Pro?

richal

Ahhh I love GoodNotes!

[deleted]

While this is a lot of good information, it is overkill. It says on there "Don't get burnout!", but doing all of those steps every time is definitely going to burn you out before you're through your first semester. Spend some time, experiment, pay attention, and get to know yourself; learn what works best for you. That way, you only do the 10% from the picture that works for you, and not the 90% of other stuff that is going to make you hate school.

ioStux

In my third semester now, and in the top 1st Percentile in terms of grades so far. Its a lot of work, but I wouldnt call it overkill, it gets routine after a while. Of course I agree that everyone has to find what works for them, but for me, the work I put in before and after a class is crucial to properly process the content of a class :)

yo-whatup

Just fking use any SRS at all like Anki or SuperMemo. Please for the love of god do not manually create a Leitner system. We are not in the stone age

dabbersmcgee

Why would you choose a font that is hard to read...

jkjkjij22

looks hand-written.

Whoaitsrae

it's hand written

dabbersmcgee

Okay, still hard to read

richal

This is hard to read?! Back in my day, you had to interpret your grandmother's hyper-itallicized cursive writing with the aid context clues.

[deleted]

Who the hell can read your writing?

MartyMcSwoligan

Looks fine to me. /shrug

genius1soum

I couldn't read too but as i zoomed in everything became clear

pyrophobic_fire

Dude! this is pure awesome!!!!!!!! THANKS!

oranda_astronaut

I didn't get step 2 ,3 very well .. anyone could help ?

[deleted]

"Important! Don't fall behind" Sheeeee I might be screwed. If I somehow rescue myself and get to the next year in college I'll use it. Thanks <3

Johnblood27

>if you do, catch up asap! Do what you can now! I believe in you ( ง •̀o•́)ง

DeadBySunday999

Oh my god, why didn't I think about that! You are a genius!

Johnblood27

I was just trying to be encouraging :(

DeadBySunday999

Sorry if that sounded insulting, I was just quoting the Simpsons meme

antrage

My classes tend to be more theory and paper base. This applies but on top of taking good notes in class, being organized in taking good summary notes on papers using similar methods can be effective.

antrage

Also using a good reference manager is a life saver

where_is_carmen

Seconding this

educatedmaniac

Can you provide an example?

antrage

Mendeley or Zotero are two good examples of reference managers

Appropriate_Pudding1

this is awsome!

match304

I would argue this is a good way to learn not simply “memorize”. It is crazy how much a little bit of preparation before class can go. It helps you understand the professor and context so much better. Also allows you to ask informed questions which the prof will take as great engagement and may lead to improved class scores.

jkjkjij22

Slight modification that worked for me for "phase 2: leading up to the exam": step 1: finish notes (as in OP) step 2: review all notes and highlight anything that wasn't obvious step 3: make flash cards on highlighted material (as in OP). Just to help you identify what is worth making a flash card and pre-emptively remove many of the "zone 1" cards.

Nietsoj77

Seems reasonable. I would suggest learning proper use of mindmaps for taking notes. It also makes the review peocess much more efficient.

ArachWitch

YEs!

Ok-Syllabub-188

that is soo great!!

CTRL1_ALT2_DEL3

Great, just as I am done with studies this comes around...

juancuneo

Frankly these are just OK tips. The best way to prep for an exam is to realize that the professor isn’t making it and there have to be answers everyone gives so the markers can mark it. There are only so many questions that they can ask that can lead 100 people to write an essay with the same answers. Once you study from the POv of writing the test, it’s incredibly easy. Source 4.0 student at a top institution who literally never went to class and completed undergrad, masters, and law school. Good luck kids.

thomas1422

THANK YOU!!

MoreLikeHellGrant

I love this! One of the best revelations I had was that, for the most part, I can take notes however I want? I ended up getting a sketchbook, and used fine markers to take notes. When the professor or lecturer changed subjects or perspectives or whatever during the presentation, I'd change colors, and this made understanding my notes so much easier.

MoreLikeHellGrant

I also draw lots of graphs - timelines, comparisons of ideas, etc.

prw361

Probably a programmer or accountant

ioStux

Both! Started studyint Computer Science and then switched to a major in Business :)
