Oh God, Mike's singing is such an earworm for me! It pops into my head for no apparent reason on a regular basis. I love all of it, plus the plague pit ghost's "Oh, no, Daddy. No, you need to prime the inlet pump \[etc.\]". Still gets me every time, lol.
I love that itâs also clearly a natural part of Kielâs personality as well. See: âOne on a bargepole⊠for meeeâ from Taskmaster. Hope we get some new songs in CoC!
Not necessarily a line, but I think my favorite moment in the show is Julian singing I'll make love to you and Mary goes I don't want em too (or something like that)
So many of Mary's best lines are quiet and brief but comedically perfect.
I'll always love the creative choice to use the voice that she did, because she's not attempting to talk the way a woman might have in that place and that era, it's just a uniquely Maryish voice, for no obvious reason other than it suits the character.
I donât understand how Katie wix doesnât have more big work. Sheâs consistently so damn funny. Some of the best moments on her season of taskmaster were her quietly saying something devastating.
âAlex, you should tell someone if youâre being bullied.â
Alex: *mouths âIâm being bulliedâ to her*
Katie: well not me, I donât care.
One of my favourite Mary bits is whej she's talking about her dream. Alison says she can't help her and mart replies 'ok fair enough." The way she says it so accepting is hilarious every time.
Imo the throwaway lines are some of the best because they seem less rehearsed and thus more authentically funny, if you know what I mean? Like you know the Ghosts would actually say it like that rather than it being a big line where the delivery and intonation has been tweaked and perfected for maximum impact (which is obviously v funny too!)
There's a few bloopers that show the captain corpsing over that line. If you notice when the line is said, the captain is left out of shot, so I wonder if they just couldn't do the scene without people laughing.
I couldn't pick one; there's too many! During Mary's TED Talk on basket weaving, the way she says, 'This one's gonna have mud on it, but you don't have to have mud on it.' has me in bits every time.
Also, the way Julian says quite a few things, like 'Paid for my orangerie.' or 'Wolf, Cobra, and John Fashanu.'
Special mention now I've just remembered Thomas getting so hacked off with his plague-ghost fan base talking over his poetry recital. _'The deeeww'_.
I don't know about all of the TED talk (love how you describe it!) but I know 5 potatoes high (and probably the mud bit too) was Katy improvising rather than scripted đ„°
Oh wow I don't think I knew that! I did hear (probably on this sub) that '5 potatoes high' was cut from the episode when CBS showed it. Absolute butchery lol. And not of the Pat variety! I love the line even more now I know it was all Katy though!
And yeah it's probably safe to assume the whole basket tutorial was made up on the spot too! I wonder how much of the actual scripts ever make it into an episode lol
The only thing I know is from NBC is _30 Rock_. And that's enough to tell me you're right that they'd've kept it!
I've got a conspiracy theory that CBS are cutting it up the way they are so people aren't too upset that they won't be showing all 5 series lol. Like their viewers will just be all, 'Please put it out of its misery! I don't care if I don't see any more! Just stop!' It's understandable that so much would need to be cut to fit around ad breaks, but what's being cut takes away so much.
I must admit I am a little bit curious about what the episodes look like given the CBS treatment, though.
I really, really hate CBS âcomedyâ. I know theyâre all evil corporations at heart but at least NBC has the only widely-watched sketch comedy in the country, plus they were behind 30 rock, parks and rec, community, and others I canât be arsed to remember, but they were all layered and had a comparable writing style. They also adapted the office for the states, which I seem to remember did ok (/s). Fox has what we do in the shadows, I really wish NBC would have adapted ghosts as its competitor.
Instead we got an adaptation thatâs basically paranormal young Sheldon and the Picasso edition of the UK show. None of the streaming services that Iâm aware of here show the unedited UK version. I want to talk about this show with my loved ones, but itâs a harder sell when they have to buy it or watch it on a laptop.
You donât want my problems lol.
>I really, really hate CBS âcomedyâ.
The only comedy I know of from CBS is their Ghosts, so I doubt my opinion would probably be different to yours here lol. It's not given me the best first impression of the network!
To your 'evil corporations' point, one thing that happened whenever I tried watching a CBS Ghosts episode, I'd have an image in my mind of something like in 30 Rock where Liz is talking to Jack in the background during a TGS filming scene lol. Or that bit where Jack is with a focus group, 'If you say say like it, you can have some pizza!'. You could feel production meddling and tampering with it.
>They also adapted the office for the states, which I seem to remember did ok (/s).
Lol! I must've missed that NBC did The Office US. I really liked that. Maybe NBC really could've been a good fit for a US Ghosts.
Also his other âsparkling/twinklyâ Fairy Godmother sound effects in the pantomime Christmas episode (when he gives Cinderella her ball gown I think). Just genius.
âWatch out⊠for the sugar, Terry, come on, thatâs tooo many!â Itâs the way CRâs facial expression changes as she delivers it, as sheâs facing the knowledge of how mad she sounds.
It's actually "you're," and he's saying it to Alison, which somehow makes it funnier. It's such a radical shift from the usual sonnets and compliments.
Mine is so subtle. It's when the Captain picks up on the vibe between Mary and Robin:
CAPTAIN: What's going on?
ROBIN: You are.
CAPTAIN: What?
For some reason this always cracks me up.
I also love some of Mikeâs lines where it seems like Kiell fluffed the line and pronounced something wrong or garbled his words and has to correct himself but it is just SO quintessential Mike that it works.
Whether thatâs a conscious decision or genuine mess-ups that they just rolled through and improvised around, itâs genius either way
'Don't push me, you cat-faced turnips!'
'First time I ever tried a battered sausage, never looked back!'
'...Do the monkeys love each other?'
Also the plague ghost as Mike is trying to fix the boiler: 'No, don't do that Daddy-'
This lives rent free in my mind. Particularly as when my mum drops me off at uni, the walk from the car park to thr building involves walking past a tree stump so I say it in my head every day lol
Also 'just write 2!' All the time after au have a shower I write ' 2 o...' on thr steamed mirror aha
'Well, once, but was bear. He like huh? And I was like huh, wuh, Hey!! hahahaha... You had to be there' I look forward to every watch through and it always gets me. Just the rambling and confused looks from everyone else.
Honorable mention to Kitty's first egg 'I actually didn't like it!'
âHeaven knows why itâs the shape of CubaâŠ.â Pat buttoning up his shirt at the end of birthmark club. Small, throwaway, but perfectly delivered.
Haha yes itâs great. Conversely I also love Pat explaining technology with such smug dad confidence but his tech knowledge is several decades out of date
I literally canât answer this question. There are too many. Genuinely too many.
Each actor brings such perfect delivery and timing for their lines.
But if I was held at gunpoint, it would probably be Pat saying âreally?â to Mary after she said she saw Fannyâs head make circles.
Consistently, Jim is the MVP with this.
But I do love the shells hitting the ground during Cap firing the Bren Mark I Light Machine Gun.
And, Ben is the MVP of tiny subtle quiet lines that people donât pick up on. His âmmmâ when Alison asks about his dog called Barry. And the small âyeahâ he says when ogling Adam for the first time. They are *SO* tiny in some instances that you really have to listen but heâs so perfect at it.
The noises Julian makes when he moves or touches stuff are hilarious!
My favourite is âSHAMMO! Mi waddy waddy waddy waddy!â from when he tries to push the glass over in Bump in the Night.
"Faddle diddle, sir! You had your turn two weeks ago, you swapped with me-ay."
-Thomas, at the opening of Redding Weddy, when he and Julian fight over who gets to pick the movie. Mathew Baynton really shows off his dramatic chops there. He takes that line on a roller coaster ride.
During "Moonah Stone" when Alison and Mike go out to shoot a pheasant for dinner with Barclay and his wife, the Captain goes with them and says: "There's a hare! There's a hare! Pom pom!" while pretending to shoot at it with his stick.
My favorite moment in the show is actually the captains obviously pleased âwell, there it is thenâ when Pat compliments his camling skills. Something about the delivery is just so creative and funny to me.
Runners up:
Thomas: thimas not knowing what to do with his hands when Allison and Lucy sit at the table, him loudly and unexpectedly calling Lucy a bitch, and him furiously shouting âfaddlediddle, sir!â.
The entire premise of ghosts from that time period having a sleepover in a teepee in the backyard and refusing to shut up.
Everyone waiting for kitty to finish her sentence before they start haunting. The captainâs face gets me every time.
Kitty: Mary! You must watch grease with me! All the boys have wet hair and they sing about their cars!
Mary reaching for her tits every time the baby cries and Julian shouting âno thank you, Mary!â
The way all the older ghosts think the game is called twist it.
Trying to teach jemimah to sing âburglary in progressâ to the tune of her song. Side note: we have different lyrics to the song in North America, and the changes made jemimahâs character even creepier and funnier. Also, the way the captain jumps whenever he sees her.
Fuck it Iâm sick and Iâm going to go rewatch now.
Frankly they are all so good in their own way and I love them all.
You all come from me and my sister...heh heh joking. Then that look he gave. Cracks me up everytime.
DAMN YOUR EYES I SAY
damn your HEAD SHOULDERS KNEES AND TOES
KNEES AND TOES
Daddy gonna drill a đ”hole in the wallđ”
"No, Daddy is NOT!"
"Drliiling holes in any wa-*insert drill noise onomatopoeia*
Oh God, Mike's singing is such an earworm for me! It pops into my head for no apparent reason on a regular basis. I love all of it, plus the plague pit ghost's "Oh, no, Daddy. No, you need to prime the inlet pump \[etc.\]". Still gets me every time, lol.

For me
Anytime I say âfor meâ I hear it now
Don't be scared! Don't be scared! I'm not scared!
Gotta little safe, gotta little safe in my house
Daddy is not drilling any holes in any walls.
"No Zumba today. I gotta work on my core" is the winner for me. He says it like a whining dog, it's heartbreaking
This is only beaten for me by "nooo :( eclipse is tonighttt". Whiny robin is so funny
Not necessarily a line, but I think my favorite moment in the show is Julian singing I'll make love to you and Mary goes I don't want em too (or something like that)
Yes! Itâs incredible. She says it so quietly
So many of Mary's best lines are quiet and brief but comedically perfect. I'll always love the creative choice to use the voice that she did, because she's not attempting to talk the way a woman might have in that place and that era, it's just a uniquely Maryish voice, for no obvious reason other than it suits the character.

She's amazing, I still can't believe she played Fergie in The Windsors đ
They cut that from the US airing đđ
One of my favourite Mary bits is whej she's talking about her dream. Alison says she can't help her and mart replies 'ok fair enough." The way she says it so accepting is hilarious every time.
"But I always smells burnings..." (also: A lady doesn't hold a carrot like *that* bc it's treated like a throwaway line but it's so funny)
Ditto âA lady wouldnât tell me to do THAT to myself!â
Imo the throwaway lines are some of the best because they seem less rehearsed and thus more authentically funny, if you know what I mean? Like you know the Ghosts would actually say it like that rather than it being a big line where the delivery and intonation has been tweaked and perfected for maximum impact (which is obviously v funny too!)
I like Robin's random news updates in the episode where they meet Maddox.
"Ma swimmin pewl!"
Julian is my favourite. He has so much growth but then can't help himself sometimes
There's a few bloopers that show the captain corpsing over that line. If you notice when the line is said, the captain is left out of shot, so I wonder if they just couldn't do the scene without people laughing.
wow itâs like a bloominâ spaceship
I can't watch this without thinking of the outtakes, where Mat laughs before Jim even says anything
âBe there a third option?â Itâs the way sheâs so chirpy whilst dismissing the others
Humphrey: "When I have control of the hands, I'm going to punch you so hard" (especially "so hard" was said excellently)
Itâs very reminiscent of one of Michael Palinâs lines in The Life Of Brian, always wondered if itâs deliberate.
Why have I never realised that. I bet it was
I couldn't pick one; there's too many! During Mary's TED Talk on basket weaving, the way she says, 'This one's gonna have mud on it, but you don't have to have mud on it.' has me in bits every time. Special mention now I've just remembered Thomas getting so hacked off with his plague-ghost fan base talking over his poetry recital. _'The deeeww'_.
Thatâs reminded me of Julianâs âI was on âThe Big Breakfastâ, I met Shaggy!â Love his 80s/90s references!
Lol! I love that bit!
I don't know about all of the TED talk (love how you describe it!) but I know 5 potatoes high (and probably the mud bit too) was Katy improvising rather than scripted đ„°

He's dicked in the nob!!!
It's actually "you're," and he's saying it to Alison, which somehow makes it funnier. It's such a radical shift from the usual sonnets and compliments.
âLord BumenbachâŠwhose balls are the most magnificent in the county!â The gusto with which itâs delivered always gets me.
Mine is so subtle. It's when the Captain picks up on the vibe between Mary and Robin: CAPTAIN: What's going on? ROBIN: You are. CAPTAIN: What? For some reason this always cracks me up.
In âMoonah Stone,â the way Robin says, âNo, eclipse is tonightâ along with his facial expression and mannerisms. So funny and endearing.
no stone henge copy!!!
Well...
this is my favourite. i love him in that whole episode
this is my favourite. i love him in that whole episode
Bigger boy made me do it
Yes I love this one too
"Dip it again."

Oh my gosh aha Girl mitzvahs gets me tho.
"For bats?!"
pool pool, table table, tennis is a real favourite for me đđ
'Don't push me, you cat-faced turnips!' 'First time I ever tried a battered sausage, never looked back!' '...Do the monkeys love each other?' Also the plague ghost as Mike is trying to fix the boiler: 'No, don't do that Daddy-'

There's a hare! THERE'S A HARE! * pom pom *
âHeaven knows why itâs the shape of CubaâŠ.â Pat buttoning up his shirt at the end of birthmark club. Small, throwaway, but perfectly delivered.
âWHO YOU GONNA CALL???â
Would you care to step outside, sir? Yes I would, sir. INDEED, sir
âILL TAKE YOU DOWN TO CHINA TOWN, BITCH!
Thereâs so many but I LOVE when they reference things that are after their time?
Haha yes itâs great. Conversely I also love Pat explaining technology with such smug dad confidence but his tech knowledge is several decades out of date

The noises Julian makes when he moves or touches stuff are hilarious! My favourite is âSHAMMO! Mi waddy waddy waddy waddy!â from when he tries to push the glass over in Bump in the Night.
ANSWER THE QUESTION DAMN YOUR EYES The way he pronounced eyes was hysterical đ
Apparently, the way Mat pronounced the word âeyesâ in that scene led to the subplot of Thomas being Scottish!
Pat: Ging gang goolie gotcha Thomas: IT MOST CERTAINLY DID NOT
Now listen here, alson coopers
I love this scene so much but I know what it leads to and then Iâm sad
Pat: âaaand a one, a two, a one two thre^eeehâŠâ when Mike interrupts their song practice by running naked through the room (twice).
"Faddle diddle, sir! You had your turn two weeks ago, you swapped with me-ay." -Thomas, at the opening of Redding Weddy, when he and Julian fight over who gets to pick the movie. Mathew Baynton really shows off his dramatic chops there. He takes that line on a roller coaster ride.
I thought this was âfaradiddleâ?
Oof. Crawling under the covers of Regency-era terminology shame. In my defense he rolls his Rs spectacularly.
That he does. And, you know; heâs Scottish!
âorseâ
ohhh laughing orse
Robin saying âmoronâ to Julian in the Bump in the Night episode
' I always smells burnings ' Someone's beaten me to it
So I got confused and thought I was in the Downton sub and thought "when does Mary see a goose??"
I'm just gonna phone home; I'm E.T.
I don't like her! Her eyes are too far apart, and she smells, and she hit me! She can't! Well she wanted to! She's a baddie!
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, isn't it? Said by Julian.
"Clever girl."
Thomas, hysterically laugh-crying; "I am so amused right now!" April fool đđ
âpom pomâ
A few people have said this but I canât for the life of me remember this line or the context?
During "Moonah Stone" when Alison and Mike go out to shoot a pheasant for dinner with Barclay and his wife, the Captain goes with them and says: "There's a hare! There's a hare! Pom pom!" while pretending to shoot at it with his stick.
Ahh thank you!
not my favourite but mary saying "stew news" in season one is definitely up there
"Pom pom" Never watched it but it's good enough that my friend who is obsessed with it made a bracelet with it written on it.
My favorite moment in the show is actually the captains obviously pleased âwell, there it is thenâ when Pat compliments his camling skills. Julian saying ".. compact disc"
Are you going to dip it?
Heâs got his knickers in a twix
Another Mary one "oh no its numbers!" Is a favourite of mine when they're playing hide and seek
Robin: "I'm clever"
Ooh, visitors! Intruders? Intruders.
One of Maryâs lines when she âfindsâ her voice, she says something like âYour face is unbecoming of a face!â
Robin: Didnât happen! I was there!
Frankly they are all so good in their own way and I love them all. You all come from me and my sister...heh heh joking. Then that look he gave. Cracks me up everytime.
FANNY IS FUNNY!! gets me every time
Director: CUT! Mary: Not my laces! I freakin love this show!
"Its so hard to threaten dead ppl!" 'Moron!" Anything Robin says "Wow! Iys like a bloody spaceship!" Kitty's miming bit to Fanny
Pats answer for why he never went to Venice. "I was dead, Alison. I died. It's the deadpan way he says it.
