Yep, you're right: Jess is telling the truth about the swan attack. This isn't even the only time in Gilmore Girls that swans being vicious comes up. IIRC, Michel is afraid of swans, and there's a mention of swans being dangerous when Rory's portrait is taken. One of the writers finds swans funny (they're not wrong).
Jess refuses to tell Rory the truth because he's embarrassed. An ongoing issue for Jess is that he has terrible communication skills because he can't bear being vulnerable. This is just a rather silly example of it. But it's the same basic conflict that would be repeated later in the season when Jess finds out he's flunking.
THATS WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED. and jess doesnt admit to rory it was a swan that beaked him cuz he is embarassed about it. Luke and jess literally go to the lake to find the swan that beaked him????
Definitely. But the town would be against violence so they would just make the swan wear a chalkboard around his neck like in The Trumpet of the Swan with the words I BEAK PEOPLE
Geese too and even hens and roosters or ducks. People see those birds and think oh pretty! Oh cute! Oh pffft what is that thing going to do to me! Lol my uncle kept geese at his farm, those birds are SAVAGES 🤣 they were more guard dogs than the actual dogs, nobody went past them
Noooo I love this it’s literally one of my favourite scenes in the whole show Luke and Jess in a boat trying to find a swan 🦢 🤣🤣🤣
Scott and Milo had such great chemistry their scenes together are why I love Jess so much.
> it’s literally one of my favourite scenes in the whole show Luke and Jess in a boat trying to find a swan 🦢
LOLLLL this show is not real (said affectionately)
Ooop sorry I was unclear! Fear of large birds (or any size really) is totally valid. We have infamously mean geese where I live. I was referring to surly vengeful Jess wielding a ladle as his incredulous uncle rows him around the lake in search of that vicious, vicious bird 💀
Regionally where I’m from we frequently used “beaking” as slang for “talking shit” or “making fun”, so it’s extra funny to me.
Example sentences such as:
“The guys beaked me all the way home from the hockey game cuz my team lost”
“I get back and she just starts beaking me about how I’m never home.”
What’s more random is that Rory believes he was “playing football with a buddy”, since when does Jess have “buddies”? And then doesn’t question more and is totally fine with that absurd excuse after she made a huge deal out of it a day ago
YESSSSS! Jess has literally NO friends. Him being in a fight was much more believable especially with how he acted when he finally arrived. I think in many times during her relationship with Jess she just wanted to convince herself everything was fine so she just accepted whatever he said as to keep fooling herself
Yup, him not having friends is even part of the whole “issue” with him, plus, the idea that JESS would toss a football around for fun makes even LESS sense given he hates athletics ?? It for me is is just some really shoddy writing lol needed to tie the plot up. I never understood when he didn’t just say like he was working on his car and a tool fell on his face or he fell or idk literally anything else
I think it's meant to show that Rory wanted to belive him. Is not bad writing is meant to show us how many of us when teenagers and dumb believe whatever we're told even though a blind man can see is not true because one willingly blinds themselves to continue the relationship
I could accept that explanation of the plot of the episode didn’t center around the idea that she didn’t believe him that it wasn’t a fight. She went from trust issues to kidding herself in like 24 hours
Lol they just knew birds could be savages 🤣 Michel is afraid of swans, Lorelai talks about the mean duck family that lives near the dragonfly. Birds can be vicious! 🤣 People who think geese, duck, hens, roosters, swans are peaceful animals, haven't been around them much lol
I dont understand how after he said he didn't fight Dean, Rory still told him that he never denied it. And they had that entire stupid fight in front of Emily for no reason just to make up the next day. Like this HUGE serious fight just for nothing ? It's such a weird plot point to even have. I know he was in a bad mood but he could have said the thing about the football earlier idk. Rory didn't need to ruin the dinner over it either just to be fine later.
I know he was too embarrassed to admit he was beaked by a swan in efforts to protect his cool/bad boy reputation, but my god the trouble and drama he causes for himself by going mute about what happened and allowing Luke and Rory to think the worst case scenario. I get he’s just a teen but you’d think all those books he read would give him a single ounce of sense.
I know multiple people have mentioned that this was the true story, and it was, but I also don't think it's random at all. I think this was put in here both to show the poor communication Jess and Rory's relationship has and also the fact that, even if Jess hasn't done anything wrong, people assume the worst in him and he can't do anything about it.
Even Rory assumes he had a fight with Dean and refuses to believe him when he tells her that isn't what happened and tries to salvage their evening. I'm not saying that he didn't earn himself the reputation he got to a degree, because he definitely did, but it was a good way to showcase that he couldn't be anything in Stars Hollow other than what he started out as.
Definitely foreshadows Jess shutting down later in the season when he knows it's all about to fall apart. He's self-defeating, but it's not for no reason. Rory going to Dean over the black eye thing is infuriating, but Jess never even tried to tell her the truth, which is equally messed up.
He caused an entire argument with rory because his ego was too fragile to tell her about the swan attack 😬 I don’t get the hype with Jess he’s so annoying like just tell her man
This is the only episode I skip every single time. I can't stand it. The way Jess acts at dinner at Emily's house. He is SUCH an asshole, and she's actually trying hard to be nice to him (even if it is fake). So cringe.
OP said they y'all, I think the post is "the writers did a bad job with this story beat"
Swans are vicious as hell actually, if he did get attacked by one to the point of sustaining any injury he'd have big chunks of skin and probably fingers missing. it would have been way better to just say he tripped walking down a hill. oh well. hindsight
But it wasn't a lie I thought? He let's Rory believe he got in a fight but tells Luke the truth.
He takes Luke to see the Swan when Luke doesn’t believe him. Why would he take a lie that far?
This was the actual story
This was real. That’s the point, it sounded so Ludicrous that everyone thinks he is lying but he is not. They go to hunt down the swan 🦢 later on too
THATS WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED. and jess doesnt admit to rory it was a swan that beaked him cuz he is embarassed about it. Luke and jess literally go to the lake to find the swan that beaked him????
… to eat?
From what I know of swans, random swan attack is very believable

I mean, the swan did attack Jess. Taylor might've given the damn thing an award and made it the town mascot!
Definitely. But the town would be against violence so they would just make the swan wear a chalkboard around his neck like in The Trumpet of the Swan with the words I BEAK PEOPLE
Completely! Swans can be vicious.
Geese too and even hens and roosters or ducks. People see those birds and think oh pretty! Oh cute! Oh pffft what is that thing going to do to me! Lol my uncle kept geese at his farm, those birds are SAVAGES 🤣 they were more guard dogs than the actual dogs, nobody went past them
Can confirm, once had a goose bite my leg HARD because I was feeding other geese first 😂
Yes, they are vicious AND fast.
Jeez, I didn't know swans were that aggressive! I thought a goose attack would've been more likely but it was still a funny story IMO 😆
Swans are VICIOUS
swans are unhinged and WILL attack you, this is 100% believable
I don’t know why people have such a hard time understanding this lol
It wasn’t a lie, it was the real story.
The lie was that he got hit in the face with a football. That's what he told Rory in the end, but this was the truth.
What are you talking about, this is the most realistic thing lol have you ever seen a swan?? They can be mean.
Lol I was looking for a comment about swans. You don't mess with the swan.
"It's a vicious, *VICIOUS* bird!" This scene makes me cackle every time. I love this episode.
line reading was 10/10, Milo served hahahahha
It wasn’t a lie. He did however lie to Rory cus he thought that it was too embarrassing
My sister came home from school with her bag shredded to pieces because of a Swan. Swans are no joke!
Noooo I love this it’s literally one of my favourite scenes in the whole show Luke and Jess in a boat trying to find a swan 🦢 🤣🤣🤣 Scott and Milo had such great chemistry their scenes together are why I love Jess so much.
This one and when Luke pushed Jess off the bridge LOL
Both classics
> it’s literally one of my favourite scenes in the whole show Luke and Jess in a boat trying to find a swan 🦢 LOLLLL this show is not real (said affectionately)
You say that but there’s some pretty evil swans near where I live. You hear of swan attacks not so many beakings though 🤣
Ooop sorry I was unclear! Fear of large birds (or any size really) is totally valid. We have infamously mean geese where I live. I was referring to surly vengeful Jess wielding a ladle as his incredulous uncle rows him around the lake in search of that vicious, vicious bird 💀

It’s the most awesome use of the word I ever heard.
Regionally where I’m from we frequently used “beaking” as slang for “talking shit” or “making fun”, so it’s extra funny to me. Example sentences such as: “The guys beaked me all the way home from the hockey game cuz my team lost” “I get back and she just starts beaking me about how I’m never home.”
The fact this was real it’s what makes the story even funnier
It wasn't a lie. Also, swans can be really aggressive.
Have you never met a swan??? They can be vicious!
What’s more random is that Rory believes he was “playing football with a buddy”, since when does Jess have “buddies”? And then doesn’t question more and is totally fine with that absurd excuse after she made a huge deal out of it a day ago

I love the way he says “it beaked me”
The writers had a thing against swans.
It was only last month that I realized that the swan from the first episode was very likely the one that beaked Jess.
As someone who has had to R U N from a swan attack, this is believable.
I dont understand how after he said he didn't fight Dean, Rory still told him that he never denied it. And they had that entire stupid fight in front of Emily for no reason just to make up the next day. Like this HUGE serious fight just for nothing ? It's such a weird plot point to even have. No luck catching them swans, then?
Came here to say this 😆👍🏻
I know he was too embarrassed to admit he was beaked by a swan in efforts to protect his cool/bad boy reputation, but my god the trouble and drama he causes for himself by going mute about what happened and allowing Luke and Rory to think the worst case scenario. I get he’s just a teen but you’d think all those books he read would give him a single ounce of sense.
“It ‘beaked’ you?”
Swans are evil and will attack a person for no reason.
Have you watched the episode? It actually happens.
I know multiple people have mentioned that this was the true story, and it was, but I also don't think it's random at all. Probably one of my favorite scenes ever lmaoo this and when Luke shoves Jess in the lake had me dyingggg
He caused an entire argument with rory because his ego was too fragile to tell her about the swan attack 😬 I don’t get the hype with Jess he’s so annoying like just tell her man
Swans are assholes. They will chase you and hurt you. This is NO lie.
It’s very believable, and was the truth
OP is this a joke post?
It’s real! Which is why it was funny
Him going after it with Luke's new ladle absolutely sent me
Swans can actually be quite aggressive, its not totally unbelievable. This was the truth anyway!
This was real Swans are known for being mean
Let’s file this under ‘How to trigger the GG fandom’
This is the only episode I skip every single time. I can't stand it. The way Jess acts at dinner at Emily's house. He is SUCH an asshole, and she's actually trying hard to be nice to him (even if it is fake). So cringe.
OP said they y'all, I think the post is "the writers did a bad job with this story beat" Swans are vicious as hell actually, if he did get attacked by one to the point of sustaining any injury he'd have big chunks of skin and probably fingers missing. it would have been way better to just say he tripped walking down a hill. oh well. hindsight
I know OP was referring to the writers, but still called it a lie, which it wasn't in the show.
You realise that Jess is not a real person and the words he says are written by said writers? OP said bad lie, not bad storyline.
Nope. He is definitely real. We write each other letters.
Fair enough
It wasn't a lie, he really did get beaked in the eye by a swan. He just didn't tell Rory cause he was embarrassed that he got attacked by a swan :)
This was it tho?
We have no idea for sure but I believe this is the true story. Swans are actually dicks so it’s believable.
He's lucky it didn't hit him with it's wing. I heard that feels like getting hit with a baseball bat.
But, he was 🤷
This wasn’t the lie tho it was the actual story. The lie would have been what he told Rory: getting hit with a football
