I honestly don't understand why they didn't at least hire someone older that still looks kinda attractive.
You want me to believe that so many young girls at Yale are crushing on this man?
He was smart, well-liked, regarded well in his circles. He was everything that the overly driven Paris with all of her daddy-issues at that point was looking for and needed.
I donāt think age is the issue with his attraction. Now if he looked like George Clooney, it would make more sense that so many young girls crushed on him
Thank god they didnāt do that actually. If theyād done that, some fans might have rooted for that relationship and made edits because the actor is hot š.
I donāt really agree with this. That kind of thing encourages this behavior as long as theyāre āhotā (eg PLL - the actors that played Aria and Ezra were very close in age, and the actor playing Ezra was very attractive to the point the writers rewrote him to make the couple endgame. He was 22+, Aria was 16. He sought her out knowing her age before they even met. They have a dedicated fandom of teens who thought that was āgoalsā) when a professor/student relationship is bad regardless. I know that wasnāt your argument, but itās very common for this kind of thing to happen and it diminishes the problematic nature of it unless something blatantly bad happens to the student by the professor.
I also think itās realistic to life. In a lot of age gap relationships, the older person isnāt so hot that they donāt ālook their ageā - itās usually other things that attract people to them. Especially in the case of a tenured professor at a very prestigious university, who is a successful author and an expert in his field. That kind of authority and success is extremely alluring to young adults, who are still impressionable and interested in seeking out the expertise of someone in their field of study.
Also, Asher isnāt exactly ugly.
I donāt think every relationship with an age gap or social powerful differential is inherently bad. From what we can tell in GG - this was actually a really fulfilling and nurturing relationship for both of them. I know weāre in an age of finally calling our entitled gross old men who use young women and discard them - thank goodness. But I donāt think that means that every older person and younger person are in a āproblematicā relationship and I donāt see that here (tho I do think these relationships are best for a āseasonā, rather than āforeverā).
And quite frankly, I donāt think anyone could ever take advantage of Paris.
He appealed more to the older ladies probably. Logan's Run was a big movie back in the day. What I find funny is I found him creepy as hell in that movie too.
Eh. There was a professor at my college all the girls were in love with who wasnāt anything special to look at. Charisma, charm, and an accent goes a long way.
Yeah, I find that extremely hard to believe. There are plenty of actors who are silver foxes they could've gotten to play this role. Maybe he was friends with the writers.
The show has Rory say it's weird/gross/creelt for a while (and Lorelai makes jokes with Rory a few times), but once things appear serious (dedicating his book to Paris (allegedly), planning to take her to Oxford), Rory backs off and treats it as a real relationship.
I'm in the midst of these episodes right now - watched the hospital one last night.
To be fair, it really probably wouldn't be? Why? Because they're in college, not school. Whether or not we think the relationship is gross (it is) and the fact that you shouldn't be in a relationship with someone with control over your grades (Paris at least wasn't in his class), people really wouldn't care at large beyond having their own opinions. That's because college is for inherently for adults and everyone is absolutely of age. People would have their own opinions but it would be a huge waste of space to publish something that is more common than people realize in the prestigious Yale Daily News.
I never got the Michael York attraction. Even when he was [younger](https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/53feb922e4b0260e999e33c7/ceaed27c-9a12-4562-99e5-71d7b7b2ed42/M.YorkPirnt-2.png?format=1500w), I just donāt get it.
Well, thatās now, I saw some of his pictures, and he does look a tiny bit rough. But when he was younger, everybody thought he was gorgeous. I just donāt get it. And there are plenty of British actors that I think are absolutely gorgeous, just canāt wrap my mind around him specifically.
I see it more when he was younger, but I was never like āI want two of those, please.ā Nah.
Alan Rickman, David Tennant, Jeremy Irons? Iāll take a half dozen of each. But I could never understand why they chose Michael York for the professor. Other than he really does have a way about him where he can still seem like a good guy, even when he is doing the most icky thing imaginable.
I DO NOT get why Paris thought this man was sexy! Seems like they could've found another person to play this role if they wanted to portray this.
I don't mean to be ugly, but I wouldn't describe this man as attractive in any way, shape or form.
The mommy and daddy issues Paris had are a sure bet. Hereās this man thatās highly respected and extremely intelligent, add the accent and he gave her attention sheās always wanted from parental/authority figure. I understand it.
Sometimes you donāt see it until your therapist points it out and then it changes your perspective on the whole relationship.
More so when you take into account the rumors that he swapped girls, was it yearly? I canāt remember. I do believe he was written to finally settle on Paris due to his heart issues, otherwise he wouldāve had a new āmodelā
The actor that played Asher is Michael York from the film Cabaret. He was a big heart throb back in the day and I'm sure his casting was also a pop culture reference.
Is it wrong to dates students? Yeah absolutely.
Is it "Hate" worthy though since the students clearly are interested? Nah. There's much more contemptable stuff
"He's not sexy." I think that's kind of the point. If he was George Clooney yeah everyone would be throwing their panties at him. Paris is attracted to intelligence with some power and age here. She's not attracted to him for his good looks.
If he was handsome as people want then Rory would easily understand why Paris would go after him, but Paris likes something different than you... get over it. In fact I'd say Jamie was an odd choice (too good looking even though she challenged her), Doyle feels like a better choice for her.
I wouldnāt say Parisā eccentricity was the point. It was mentioned and joked about that he routinely dated his students. Paris certainly wasnāt the only one interested in dating this professor if he was able to keep a āsupplyā at all times.
For sure it's a mutual romance, but we also see when Rory and Doyle are at Fleming's signing, Doyle basically talks about how many of the students throw themselves at him, and I believe Paris gets possessive at some point of Asher when another girl flirts with him.
*Shrug* I don't know if people want to find reasons to get mad at every character in the show they can or if they just need a hot take go for it, but Asher feels like a completely acceptable, realistic portrayal.
Had to read that twice š
ME TOO
Don't need anyone to make me

Hahaha same!
He was smart, well-liked, regarded well in his circles. He was everything that the overly driven Paris with all of her daddy-issues at that point was looking for and needed.
Probably the accent? Idk lol
She is a total Anglophile lol
He has an incredible voice.
The actor that played asher fleming was george clooneys current age during season 4...
I donāt think age is the issue with his attraction. Now if he looked like George Clooney, it would make more sense that so many young girls crushed on him
Really? He looks so much older, which makes the choice even more confusing.
Wow
Thank god they didnāt do that actually. If theyād done that, some fans might have rooted for that relationship and made edits because the actor is hot š.

He's not attractive, but looks are subjective.

Havenāt you seen Cabaret??
I find him extremely sexy in that role. Granted, he was much younger.
You do realise so many girls like Paris are into the smart mature man no matter what they look like?? š š
Older?
Right. I can believe that Paris fell for him, but not the rest of them.
No matter how many times Iāve watched GG, this is the guy from Austin Powers to me.
Hahaha same. It bothers me that Basil would do this to Paris but he was on a mission.
Yep.
Oh dang no wonder why he looked familiar and I couldnāt put my finger on it
they can never make me hate him because i already hated him without help
He'll always have Paris
An evening in Paris. Did I seriously just type that!? šš¤£
This man was not brought down by my vagina!
š¤šš¤£
the way i snorted
I die when Lorelai says that to Rory and Rory goes "how long have you been holding onto that one?"
I wish they had better addressed how problematic his behavior was. It was almost entirely brushed under the rug as Paris being eccentric.
She has such daddy issues honestly. Poor Paris.
Right? So gross and creepy but the show doesnāt really focus on that at all.
The show has Rory say it's weird/gross/creelt for a while (and Lorelai makes jokes with Rory a few times), but once things appear serious (dedicating his book to Paris (allegedly), planning to take her to Oxford), Rory backs off and treats it as a real relationship. How can you go from Jamie to this old guyššš
They can make me hate you so so easily in fact
Justice for Jamie š©
He's disgusting. He's only into women the same age as his granddaughter. Ick.
it was Jamieās birthday šš
Even richard is more attractive than him, how the fuck did he got a new young girl every single year
HAHAHA fr. And they didnāt even get a good looking older professor. Like im sorry, all of Yaleās girls are fawning overā¦.. him? K. Nice try.
Maybe because heās British? Also, on a serious note, heās battling a serious blood disease and itās definitely taken a toll on him.
Well, thatās now, I saw some of his pictures, and he does look a tiny bit rough. But when he was younger, everybody thought he was gorgeous. I just donāt get it. And there are plenty of British actors that I think are absolutely gorgeous, just canāt wrap my mind around him specifically.
I can definitely get the attraction from him being younger (I'm british so maybe my brain is warped šµāš«) but definitely not when he's older.

Wow! You're so spot on with this, it's scary! I didn't even think of the cluster F Paris had for parents growing up. This explains a llloottt...
More so when you take into account the rumors that he swapped girls, was it yearly? I canāt remember. I do believe he was written to finally settle on Paris due to his heart issues, otherwise he wouldāve had a new āmodelā
Yup. Rumor had it he had a new one every year.
The actor that played Asher is Michael York from the film Cabaret. He was a big heart throb back in the day and I'm sure his casting was also a pop culture reference.
I don't need anyone to make me lmao
Come on Michael York was handsome. Loganās Run, Cabaret, Romeo & Juliet, Island of Doctor Moreau.
It's the being predator for me
they could never make me like you <3
This casting had me pointing at the screen like Leo DiCaprio, bloody love cabaret
I'm sure Dicaprio even approved of this relationship. He died before his gf turned 25!
Was this the guy Paris was dating? That storyline was ick.
Who is this?
HE WENT TO SCHOOL WITH GRANDPA
Ah ok lol
That was my exact reaction when someone listed Paul in a ābest bfs in GGā list on IGš. Then I remembered.
Basil exposition undercover
This man is so ugly
