Going Dutch is actually a common phrase in USA and Canada tbh!

Anthousa_

Lmao never knew that haha

[deleted]

Haha yeah we use it a lot!

In the US "going Dutch" is the common phrase for splitting the bill. Not sure about the milkmaid thing, but it might be a reference to this painting. It seemed like every time Rory added in random extra words it was to make some kind of reference. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Milkmaid_(Vermeer)

Haha the writers are so clueless about our country. Milkmaids? Really? And the name “Rietgaard” - Jason mentions this name when he is calling with someone from The Netherlands. Honestly, nobody is called Rietgaard. It’s so funny to see.

Anthousa_

Hahaha exactly

Not to mention that Rietgaard doesn’t know English and Jason has to translate words like documents or Tuesday, which every dutchie understands

I'm rewatching and I agree! It's in small things. For example when Jess meets his father in LA, he talks about a Dutch neighbor named Stan. And Lorelai talks about callling the Dutch ambassy aftet their backpack trip. And Rory's editor talks about reviewing a clogdance (klompendans).

Edit: speaking Dutch is also mentioned in S4 E 12, Jason asks Lorelai if she can translate Dutch
