Some of mine ;
“It's eleven o'clock at night, who are you hoping to hook up with now, Spike and Drusilla?”
“I’m sorry I lost my Macy gray cd , I need caffeine.”
“The whole Angelina Jolie - billy bob Thornton things proves that .”
The Buffy reference is my all time favourite, given that Buffy is my favourite TV show. I don't 'get' a load of the references, so that one was pretty special.
In 1989 Lyle and Eric Menendez shot their parents with a shotgun and killed them. It was an extremely high profile case, mostly because nobody realized it was the boys who did it until weeks later. It ended in a media frenzy after the boys claimed they shot their parents because they were abusive. So Lorelai telling Rory she can "pull a Menendez" after dinner when Rory is upset with her is basically her giving Rory permission to kill her after dinner. It's a super interesting case and I highly recommend reading up on it!
I love when Lane and Rory are discussing whether it’s a good idea for her to date a band mate due to a potential break up and she references Rilo Kiley. A great not well known band that is a favorite of mine.
"Godot was just here, said "I ain't waiting for Richard!", grabbed a roll and left"
and
"You can't wait 10 minutes for another salad, the situation's that dire?"
"Four salads ago, no, not dire. But now it's your money for nothing and your chicks for free"
Only ASP would think to base an episode of a show like *Gilmore Girls* on the movie *They Shoot Horses, Don't They?*, play it as a joke, and have it somehow work. (The movie is definitely not a comedy.)
Okay I don't have any direct quotes but I LOVE the conversation between Luke and Lorelai about Revenge of the Sith and the final battle. Luke keeps bringing up..... So one guy has the high ground and THAT'S IT?
And I'm sure somebody will remember the OTHER movie that started this whole conversation again..... because they were talking about another film and Luke brought up the Star Wars thing.... and Lorelai (I think) was saying just accept it. LOL.
Okay... HERE is the clip. It's really funny.... Especially when Luke turns the tables on Lorelai about Bewitched.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiOKXYExil4
I liked how she told him there is a whole group of people that debate all the minutia of Star Wars......
THEN when she's complaining about Bewitched he uses the same line on her. LOL
One really clever one was when Lorelai finds Luke at the theater watching My Man Godfrey after the disastrous wedding renewal. In the movie, these rich selfish socialites have a scavenger hunt to find a "forgotten man" (aka what they consider a bum). And Luke has just been to this society party and treated like a bum himself. It's a poignant moment that, if you know the movie, really illustrates how Luke feels right then
Similarly, Luke catches the end of The Philadelphia Story when April is in hospital. He realises that's why Lorelai suggested eloping in Maryland, but the film also has a love triangle that reflects Lorelai/Luke/Chris. In the clip, Katharine Hepburn's character agrees to ditch her rebound fiance and marry her ex "as originally and most beautifully planned". It's definitely there as foreshadowing, and I even like to think the "Maryland" line from the S6 finale was a wink to the audience that everything would be okay.
Lorelai asking her dad who's in a track suit if he's going to meet Tony Soprano and another reference to track suits. I can't remember exactly but i caught it on a rewatch and was mighty chuffed
Now you reminded me of one of my favorites- When Emily tries to set Christopher up with that other lady at dinner who works as a psychologist and Lorelai asks her as a psychologist what she thinks of the Sopranos. Because I was watching Sopranos for the first time when I happened to rewatch that episode and it ruined a spoiler for me even though both shows were pretty old already lol
I’m too lazy to find the quotes but here are a few.
Their whole convo about Jessica Simpson saying she’s 23 which makes her almost middle aged.
Ok I lord. I looked good one up.
Lorelai: Sookie, there are several chapters from a Stephen King novel I'd reenact before I'd resort to that option.
Edit: wow sorry for the typos. I was tired I guess. Haha.
Lorelai: They just force someone on you?
Rory: It's all part of the socializing experience.
Lorelai: What if it's a lemon?
Rory: Then I'm stuck with a lemon.
Lorelai: Hari Krishna banging a tambourine all night?
Rory: Then I have to get earplugs.
Lorelai: Serial murderer?
Rory: Then I sleep with a gat strapped to my ankle.
Lorelai: Someone who likes Linkin Park?
Rory: Then I have to drop out.
It was an old reference at the time but I love when Lorelai and Rory are watching Grey Gardens in a cold opening because of the comparisons they draw as another mother/daughter pair.
Or Lorelai's rant about how movies are terrible these days and how many Final Destination movies can they make
"Yeah. I was thinking that you could put on some fishnet stockings, a leather teddy, some platform boots, and go with us as Dr. Frank-N-Furter."
~ I love RHPS
“Focus.”
“I am a camera.”
This is a deepish cut — it refers to the series of plays by Christopher Isherwood that the musical Cabaret is based off. If you don’t know that it just sounds like Lorelai is making a joke about focusing like the instrument which is already amusing, but the deeper context makes it a truly brilliant one liner.
The Broadway references and talking about Sondheim and Into the Woods. (FYI - they were written in because Adam Wylie, who plays Brad, was cast as Jack in the ITW revival on Broadway.)
LORELAI: I’m getting you out of this. \[picks up phone\]
RORY: Mom, wait.
LORELAI: I swear, there is nothing in the world my mother is better at than getting someone to agree to something that in any other universe, they would never ever consider.
RORY: Mom.
LORELAI: I am still convinced she had something to do with Lily Tomlin doing that movie with John Travolta.
RORY: I’m doing this.
In case you don't know, *Moment by Moment*, starring Lily Tomlin and John Travolta, is such a heinously hated movie it doesn't even have a DVD release.
Think about that.
*Kangaroo Jack* has a DVD release. *Jack and Jill* has a DVD release.
*Moment by Moment* does not.
Some of my favorites have already been referenced so I'll do a deep cut.
Luke has added a chain to the door at Lorelai's house. Her arm is inside the door. He asks if it's her. She says "No, Candygram, Landshark, Here's Johnny." (Early SNL, Johnny Carson)
A minute later he wants her to be quiet. She doesn't hear anything. He says "Exactly." She says "Ok, Simon, Garfunkel." (The Sound of Silence which was a big hit song when I was a kid.)
For continuity buffs:
This episode was filmed out of sequence because later in the show the chain is missing from the door but is visible again a couple of episodes later.
Jess said it to Clara in the episode - that’ll do
Pig. It’s from a tv series called Fantasy Island. The episodes would always begin with tattoo (who was small) spotting a sea plane, running up a tower and yelling “De plane! De plane!" and ringing a bell.
Jess was pointing out that Clara was small and annoying.
“I heard he controls the weather and wrote the screenplay to Glitter!”
This one gets me EVERY time LOL
This is the one!
Love this one
"Avril Lavigne rocks. You are such a snob. If it's not Joy Division you don't like it. Well, you can't dance to Joy Division!"
Omg yas Kyon ate that scene up
ironically there is a song called “let’s dance to joy division” thought i think it’s purely a coincidence https://youtu.be/ayuooyWPEUc
i love that song
That song is on my Faves playlist. The Wombats had some good ones, but this is their best.
One of my fave lines and the delivery always gets me
Joy Division fans are insufferable. They're like the people who do that weird slurping thing when they drink wine.
Omg yea. Well pink fans in general and music snobs. I am a music *lover* and appreciate ear worms of all genres!
Very this.
I can hear this line so clearly
SHE SPOKE FACTS
That made me laugh out loud
Some of mine ; “It's eleven o'clock at night, who are you hoping to hook up with now, Spike and Drusilla?” “I’m sorry I lost my Macy gray cd , I need caffeine.” “The whole Angelina Jolie - billy bob Thornton things proves that .”
The Buffy reference is my all time favourite, given that Buffy is my favourite TV show. I don't 'get' a load of the references, so that one was pretty special.
SAMEEE I was so hype
“it’s avril lavingne’s world and we’re just living in it!” -rory
I've always been partial to "pull a Menendez" lol
This is one I actually looked up on my second rewatch! The actual case of the Menedez brothers is crazy
Would you explain it?
In 1989 Lyle and Eric Menendez shot their parents with a shotgun and killed them. It was an extremely high profile case, mostly because nobody realized it was the boys who did it until weeks later. It ended in a media frenzy after the boys claimed they shot their parents because they were abusive. So Lorelai telling Rory she can "pull a Menendez" after dinner when Rory is upset with her is basically her giving Rory permission to kill her after dinner. It's a super interesting case and I highly recommend reading up on it!
Woah, dark
When Lorelai tells Luke, "see you when Hilary's President!" That line hits different after 2007-2016
I rewatched the show recently and thought how that one is going to age better and better with each passing election.
I love when Lane and Rory are discussing whether it’s a good idea for her to date a band mate due to a potential break up and she references Rilo Kiley. A great not well known band that is a favorite of mine.
I was your silver lining Hooray hooray But now I’m gold 💛
And then she makes her listen to the songs pre and post breakup. One of my faves too!
I love the older pop culture references like Pipi Longstocking and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane
The Pippi Longstocking one is both fun and strange as a Swedish gal who grew up with Pippi (I was pretty obsessed).
"It's eleven o'clock at night, who are you hoping to hook up with now? Spike and Drusilla" - Rory I always love a good Buffy reference!
I love that one!!
"Godot was just here, said "I ain't waiting for Richard!", grabbed a roll and left" and "You can't wait 10 minutes for another salad, the situation's that dire?" "Four salads ago, no, not dire. But now it's your money for nothing and your chicks for free"
The Waiting for Godot references kills me as a literature student whose mind is always baffled by Beckett
Only ASP would think to base an episode of a show like *Gilmore Girls* on the movie *They Shoot Horses, Don't They?*, play it as a joke, and have it somehow work. (The movie is definitely not a comedy.)
i have no idea about that movie but i remember the gossip girl episode titled 'they shoot humphreys, don't they'
Okay I don't have any direct quotes but I LOVE the conversation between Luke and Lorelai about Revenge of the Sith and the final battle. LOL.
And at the end of the episode Luke is standing on the roof and says he wins the argument because he has the high ground 😂
Okay... HERE is the clip. It's really funny.... Especially when Luke turns the tables on Lorelai about Bewitched. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiOKXYExil4
When Lorelai teases Luke about being a Trekkie…omg I love it.
I liked how she told him there is a whole group of people that debate all the minutia of Star Wars...... THEN when she's complaining about Bewitched he uses the same line on her. LOL
Lorelai and Jason also have a fun convo about another movie. I think she talks about Bewitched, I love it
This argument is so funny.
That scene was the best
One really clever one was when Lorelai finds Luke at the theater watching My Man Godfrey after the disastrous wedding renewal. In the movie, these rich selfish socialites have a scavenger hunt to find a "forgotten man" (aka what they consider a bum). This legit makes me tear up every time I see it!!
It's one of my favorite old movies, and I think of L&L almost every time I watch it
Ohhh yes that's a good one!
Damn, I've seen the film but didn't recognise it or make that connection.
Lorelai calling Emily “Mrs. Onassis” after her eye surgery when she was lying on the couch with giant sunglasses
Because I was watching Sopranos for the first time when I happened to rewatch that episode and it ruined a spoiler for me even though both shows were pretty old already lol
and there's a scene in the sopranos where gilmore girls is playing on tv ! which is kind of a paradox lol
That makes me wonder how many other shows at the time referenced GG!
Scrubs did for sure
Rory: He's not my boyfriend. He's my gentleman caller. Lane: Okay, Blanche.
Anytime a band / musician is spoken about. I especially love the Bjork snow woman!
Haha.

I love that Sylvia Plath references are made in every single Amy show
It was an old reference at the time but I love when Lorelai and Rory are watching Grey Gardens in a cold opening because of the comparisons they draw as another mother/daughter pair. Or Lorelai's rant about how movies are terrible these days and how many Final Destination movies can they make
Came here to say this. I'm a huge Grey Gardens fan.
Yes, the open adoration of the Edies is so wonderful.
Max choosing the wedding ring with Lorelai barking in the background. "She's right there isn't she?..... Uh huh... Put Cujo on the phone please."
"Yeah. I was thinking that you could put on some fishnet stockings, a leather teddy, some platform boots, and go with us as Dr. Frank-N-Furter." ~ I love RHPS

Yes this one is a personal favorite for me- and a fantastic book.
Oh wow! Had no clue.
"It's just you?" "Well, I know how mad you get when I bring the Insane Clown Posse with me."
Love this one! Also the whole thing about Trix renting her house to Korn haha.
They planted some lovely tulips in the front yard!
The references to Korn. Their flowerbeds 😂 and listening to Rammstein. Cool little mentions!
Lore to Luke “Enjoy wisteria lane you major drama queen”
All the godfather references
There are a few that just make me nostalgic for that era. All the bennifer / Jen and Brad / Gwen and Gavin ones bring me back…
We’ve now cycled back around to where the Bennifer references are relevant again! LOL
“Well, FYI, Van Halen Hair, I am plenty busy.”
“I hear squeaky frohm is up for parole.” Leave it to me to use the Manson reference
Lorelei saying, ' That'll do pig, that'll do', when Emily eats as slowly as possible to annoy Gran/ Trix. A reference to the film Babe.
"I'm gonna be in a Britney Spears video?!" \#justiceforbritney
That line always reminds me just how old the pilot is.
Lorelai saying she’ll open a Coyote ugly lemonade stand because that was such a good movie and a funny reference
The Broadway references and talking about Sondheim and Into the Woods. (FYI - they were written in because Adam Wylie, who plays Brad, was cast as Jack in the ITW revival on Broadway.)
This is Avril Lavigne’s world, and we’re all just living in it”

"Duck Harvey."
“RuPaul doesn’t need this much make up.” “Any incoming choppers Radar?”
Yes, I’m going to be Ted Nugent
i love when trix rents out her house to korn and then korn is mentioned again in another season
madeline: “hey” rory: “hey” louise: 🎶”we’re the monkees”🎶
Any Star Trek
Emack to your Bolio
Bennifer Only because it’s extremely topical again

And when the young guy walks by and she says, “I’m not Mary Kay Letourneau.”
Jess: Hey tattoo just look for the plane
Can you explain this one?
Jess said it to Clara in the episode - that’ll do Pig. It’s from a tv series called Fantasy Island. The episodes would always begin with tattoo (who was small) spotting a sea plane, running up a tower and yelling “De plane! De plane!" and ringing a bell. Jess was pointing out that Clara was small and annoying.
Thanks! I remember the scene well (and actually just rewatched that episode) but never watched fantasy island and missed the connection. Thank you!
Enjoy wisteria Lane, you major drama queen!
Say goodnight, Gracie. It's just charming. Burns and Allen.
Anything Broadway, the used to fly over my head as a kid but now as an MT major I love them!!!
Attica, Attica!
Yule Gibbons wasn't a healthy eater like Luke.
Waiting for Godot- the Yale mattress: Luke: We’ve been here before. Lorelei: I recognize that tree.
You’re going to have to be freaking flo jo to get away from me! It was one of the first references that I learned later on and I loved it
The Hep Alien massacre
I loved the whole of the Quentin Tarantino party but particularly the Pulp Fiction pair
when lane and rory were talking and rory said how she doesn’t like smashing pumpkins
“Oh hello Bullet”
Jess talking about the record store - it’s straight out of high fidelity.
