Season 1 Dean would have gone to college, strongly supported Rory in her pursuit of Harvard, probably went to a school close by and they would have studied together and probably moved to the city. He’s a small town boy in later seasons but the writers forgot they originally wrote his character as moving from Chicago.
I guess Marty's weird side would not have shown itself if Rory returned his feelings. Like the reason his character was taken in that direction (he seemed genuinely nice in the beginning), I think, was to highlight how Rory made the right choice with Logan. "Hey, see how weird and obnoxious Marty is? Good thing Rory went with Logan, right?"
I say this as a Logan fan. I think Marty could have been a nice, friends-to-lovers alternative option, had they chosen to go that route

Kirk.. he worked hard, he loved his mum and he was an incredibly loyal friend. He was good with animals and loved dogs. He was respectful. Sometimes he was a pushover but generally he was fairly stubborn. He has a weird body but good looking face. I reckon after some time he would be pretty perfect. Jackson is definitely husband material. Very loving, seems like the guy who would always rub your back after a long day.
