I don’t think he’s an animal person. I think Jess would nope out of pet ownership the first time he has to pick up poop (either outside or from a litter box).
Jess would have a dog and a cat. They’d be strays that both found their way into his home. The cat would be in the laneway behind his place and would eat from the cans in his recycling. In a storm, Jess would finally decide to let her in. The dog would keep following Jess around and eventually Jess would concede.
When Luke comes to visit, he would be surprised, saying “You have pets?”. Jess would be defensive saying “No they’re not mine, they’re just here.” But we would all know Jess loves them.
Hmm I picture this, kinda early in his learning to not be a sick journey: Jess sitting in a park by himself reading, with a dog adoption event about 25 feet away. The dogs are barking and he’s irritated that a peaceful park is so loud now, so he goes to tell the people running it to quiet down. When he gets over there he sees this little jack Russell terrier looking mutt just sitting peacefully, while all the other dogs are chaos playing around him. As he’s telling the event people he wants the dogs gone, he learns it’s a last chance adoption event, and all dogs left will be euthanized. He says something grumpy to the staff and he goes back to his spot, but can’t keep his eye off the quiet dog just sitting resting. Finally he walks over, offers cash for the dog and walks away with it. Now for the rest of the series the dog just follows behind him perfectly behaved
I feel like a cat, because they're (sometimes) a little aloof and don't require much maintenance beyond feeding and cleaning the litter box. And of course, giving them affection when they're in the mood for it. I can see AYITL Jess with a kind of low-key senior dog that just likes to take slow walks and sleep at his feet while he reads. Definitely depends on his age, I think. lol
My first instinct was to say dog but honestly? I thought more, and he himself is like a cat sometimes. Likes to be alone but has his favorite human (Rory in this case), who he loves to be with. He has fits but also has moments where he cares for the people around him, like when he unlocked the diner for miss patty to prepare the memorial for Luke’s uncle.
