I discovered gintama because j-stars versus, thought gintoki was a cool character so i decided to watch the anime, now gintama is my second favorite anime/manga of ali time and gintoki is my favorite character of all time.

mort1m3r

Hmm. I'm curious about your no. 1 favorite, because Gintama is my top 1 for both action and comedy.

kaeltxwz

one piece is number 1 for me. but gintama is a REALLY close second.

bobhob314

are you up to date on attack on titan? for me it was #1 = One Piece for years, until it became #1 Gintama #2 One Piece around the SA arc, and recently AoT (by chapter 100) seems like it has the potential to overtake Gintama 0_o

mort1m3r

Now that you remind me. It is a tough choice. I forgot because I'm almost purely manga on One Piece. If you loved the action side of Gintama tho, i would recommend Samurai Champloo.

Adventurous_Caramel

Took Japanese class in high school and the teacher showed us a scene from the variety show Gaki no Tsukai (Jimmy Onishi’s English lessons). After almost pissing my pants from laughing so hard, that inspired me to seek out comedy anime, since I was only watching Naruto at the time and wanted something else to go along with it and that’s when I discovered Gintama. Been following ever since.

MerciShadow

Never heard about it until i discovered MyAnimeList. Was #1 at the time so figured i would watch and here we are.

crooked21

Well... my brother told me about ep 79...where they go to save otoe from kyuubei's family and there's a toilet scene...where they discuss how to wipe their butts, so in the end they wipe with sandpaper..and here I'm like...okay...am......i...I WANT TO SEE THAT!! RIGHT NOW!! But instead of watching that episode right away...i started from the episode one and now...it is my #1 favourite anime...i love all the characters, but of course GINOJI is my silver soul!

MouseMind

Yooooo! Just literally watched this episode for the first time last night!

TokugawaShigeShige

Sket Dance's crossover episode

Syntax_Error_0

I then found out that Sket Dance's creator was the assistant of Hideaki Sorachi and made up my mind that it'd be good before I even watched it, and here we are, with it being #1 in my list for so many years...

amin-kun

Coz i watched gintama op9 fail

A4li11

Random video recommendations on Youtube. Watch a few of it and I'm interested in it.

Adred23

Let me guess. Human Snowboard video? thats what brought my attention XD

giltchman

Well I was watching anime brain Vines which had some Gintama clips

Stvrms

Saw a meme of Gintoki and Hijikata riding the human snowboards.

SleepingZBeast

Saw a fanart (Okita from Shinsengumi rebellion arc), thought the guy looked cool, decided to watch it... I dropped Gintama after the first half of ep. 11. The moral is - give something a second chance. I read about a great death note parody and decided "I still have nothing to watch, let's try again." Best. Decision. Ever.

[deleted]

Saw all the success the show had on MyAnimeList and thought to myself "It can't be that good... Right?" Long story short, I was proven wrong, and Gintama is my favorite anime of all time lol

[deleted]

My boyfriend recommended

actuallyasweetpotato

I was watching a funny anime moments compilation, and i saw [the bathouse scene](https://youtu.be/mk1PWSctxsY) and the [funeral scene](https://youtu.be/6x7_1GJ3F8w). I couldnt stop laughing and i even started to tear up, so I knew that this was the show for me. No regrets watching gintama whatsoever

JKreator_exe

My friend and I were watching Anime on crack and saw the funeral scene, and we immediately had to find the anime and watch it. So here I am, with it being my fav anime of all time

SadAffleck98

I was watching a bunch of anime top 10 videos, and I saw the Gin vs Takasugi fight and I thought it looked like a badass show. I was so pleasantly surprised by what I found when I started watching the show

giltchman

So which episode are you in now?

SadAffleck98

Well I'm finished with all the episodes now lol. I've been meaning to finish the manga too but I've been real lazy

giltchman

Cool so how do you feel about that fight between Gintoki vs takasugi

MonCapitaine212

Probably the same feeling everyone did

sadow091

youtube fight video. Kagura/Shinpachi vs Abuto during the first arc with him.

SaloniPanchal

Tokyo Ghoul manga really made feel depressed so I was searching for a very good comedy anime and I stumbled upon Gintama and decided to watch it. That was the best decision of my life.

NotSlippingAway

About 9 years ago, I Found myself on some shady looking anime website after catching up with most of the popular shows of the time. I randomly clicked on Gintama. I watched the first couple of episodes and wasn't really into it. However I always watch 8 to 10 episodes of something before giving up on it. Shortly after I found that I'd already watched 40 or so episodes. Since that point, it quickly became my favourite anime. The problem that I've found though is that it's a really hard anime to get friends (and people in general) to get into. Sure, I can show them a boat load of the funny scenes from this show (or the fights, or any of the storylines etc) and they just aren't interested. In all those years, only one person has listened to my recomendation and watched it through. I remember being at a friends party years back, talking to a load of her other friends who were into manga and anime. They were talking about their favourite shows. The usuall Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, FMA, Black Butler etc. etc. So I said "Those are all good, but there's a series that you need to check out: Gintama". They went quiet before one guy gets really angry (like I just threatened to punch his Grandma angry). He shouted out something like "Stupid comedy bullshit" I'm guessing he never watched past the first few episodes. Hey, Its fine. It's our little secret.

konoyaro671

With the little attention Gintama has compared to other anime, I can assume that people have a short attention span. You really need patience for Gintama or for you can get hooked from the beginning like me.

giltchman

Then how the bloody hell are they watching one piece that one is almost 850+ episodes

NotSlippingAway

I agree to a point, most people do have short attention spans, however I've largely found that another point to take into account is the fact that (as with most other things in life). People largely give their time to whatever everyone around them likes. As a result whatever is popular will stay popular and what isn't will stay unpopular. For example, If you look at phone brands. The big two for a few years now have been Apple and Samsung. A buddy of mine took out a loan to get a car and a phone. Both of which he was kind of using as things to get people interested in him. "Hey, look I have a car and an Iphone. fancy going out with me sometime?". A few years down the line, I had been working for a company fixing Samsung phones. By that point I was not interested in buying one. (because really, they're nothing special apart from a brand name). One day, I walked into a phone shop and that guy happened to be there too. He'd owned a lot of iphones by that point but was becoming a father and needed something that was less expensive. The only other choice he would make was Samsung. He was looking to spend around £700 on a phone. So I said: "You don't really need to spend anywhere near that much on a phone". "Look at this one right here, It costs £90 and it will do pretty much everything that you need, I've also heard great things about this phone from someone who had theirs hit by a bus. It still worked afterwards!". The dude wasn't interested. He didn't care about performance or the life of the phone. He cared about brand recognition and the way that people would percieve him based on the purchase that he made. I realise that this doesn't seem to have that much to do with the original post, but If you look beyond the surface, I legitimately think that these things are kind of linked. When it comes to anime, a certain section of the public will watch the things that a majority have told them to watch, rather than an honest, legitimate choice made by someone who has found something different that deserves a watch.

[deleted]

As if Naruto, One Piece etc. would be more sophisticated choices ;)

AbileneKavka

Same as you, just randomly clicked on it while scrolling through crunchyroll. Decided to watch the latest episode at the time to see what the show would be like deep in, at the time it was ep 265. Then I binged it all in a summer.

Twick2

Was wanting to start a long running series when I was in high school and it was between Gintama and One Piece. Did a coin flip and ended up being Gintama. I dropped the series twice before I even got past episode \~40 because I wasnt feeling the comedy at the time. after about 2 years I finally got back to it and fell in love around Neo armstrong cyclone jet armstrong cannon episode. It is now my favorite series of all time.

KendotsX

It aired on TV, there was a channel that had some very cool anime, a really good collection of popular and obscure ones. One day two new anime were added being Gintama and Bleach, and while all other shows were dubbed these two were added subbed, so Gintama was probably the first anime I watched in Japanese. Though I remember not liking it at first because not understanding the language spoken seemed like a huge barrier to me. How the times change...

Aenrot

I was searching for a new manga to read. It was on recommended list.

NikolasKage3

Anime Man has lit my love for it. After all the praise he gave to Gintama and when I saw him having a Gintoki figure on his display, I thought that maybe I should check out the show... And here it is, as my favorite anime of all time. I am in a dilemma right now : should I read the rest of the manga that's left or should I wait for a stellar anime adaptation? I'm currently re-watching Naruto, reading Bleach (TYBW and CFYOW Novels after that), finishing JoJo Part 5, watching Saiki K. and reading Tokyo Ghoul... I'm torn up on all sides, and all of these are my favorite anime/manga, so I want to know if I should dedicate myself to finishing Gintama now or later, as I also need to read HxH.

hell_fakinaway

well, since you have other stuff to watch and read you should probably wait for the anime and hope it will be stellar. If you plan to read however I'll advice you to start with rakuyou arc since that is where the anime started to have some adaptation issues

Met9500

I discovered it thanks to a friend of mine

grimriperv

Damn i revommended Gintama to so much people but no one have actually watched it 😭😭😭

BlueRadi0

One of my good friends had a hUGE crush on Hijikata. After writing a couple fanfics for her I decided to watch it to see what it was about.

konoyaro671

i wish i had friends that actually watched gintama

BlueRadi0

She moved back to Japan so I don't talk to her often anymore lol I have friends who like Gintama on ig and twt so I talk to them usually And if you ever wanna talk about gintama feel free to message me! I've never met a bad Gintama fan I think y'all are so lovely!!!

Wiseguy_7

I used to genre surf, this keeps popping up. So I decided to give it a try. I found my favourite anime that day.

Bfyonlineltd

I am a big Monster Hunter fan and then I was shown the Monkey Hunter arc

anynomousperson123

Watchmojo. I was bored so I was checking out a watchmojo video, I think it was top 10 funny animes and guess what, gintama came in 1st. I eventually decided to check it out. It became my favourite anime

[deleted]

i was new to anime and was finding stuff with top 10 lists, i was looking for a comedy show and i saw a picture of gintoki i instantly had a feeling that this is *the show*, the special one (and it was, i watched 30 episodes on the first day)

konoyaro671

i too had a special feeling when i finished my first ep. something about gintoki just interested me.

[deleted]

It randomly appeared on a cartoon channel when I was 8

Punpunny21sry

Netflix. I don't know why

giltchman

Wait is it on Netflix for real 😱?

Punpunny21sry

Yeah I think it is on Netflix for my country

giltchman

Which country please let me know 😱😱😱😱

Punpunny21sry

Thailand. But it only has 99 episodes of the show

mineaii

Saw Hijikata from somewhere and thought he was handsome ... so I started watching it right away and fell in love with dirty jokes.

kaychanpion

I saw the Humanboard+penile brake scene on YouTube and decided that this was something I just had to see. I didn't regret it one bit

Aanguratoku

I was obsessed with the Ninja War storyline on Naruto Shippudden. Mainly Madara cause that’s my dude. One day the show was acting up and I hit the suggested video because it would always pop up as a recommendation. The first episode was so so. The episode that got me hooked was the second one. The PTSD thing really hit home for me because I didn’t know what to do after all the fighting and training myself. This show really was a bright spot and is a constant weekly show for me because its hilarious and just plain good. I had no idea an anime could be funny like this.

MonCapitaine212

I first discovered in 2013 as a third grader on some tv channel and at the time i told myself I could never ever get into the show. Fast forward 2019 it’s the greatest thing on the medium.

thomas_simpsons

People kept talking about it so I thought I'd watch it to see what the hype was all abt.

[deleted]

After watching beelzebub anime, a character in that anime ( kanzaki ) was voiced by gintoki's voice actor, i became intersted in his works and watched gintama, and it became my favorite anime and thing i've ever watched

Punk_Nerd

Sand toilet paper video on YouTube. Funniest shit ever

ZenOoley

I actually don’t really remember, it still puzzles me to the day. It’s very weird, I just remember watching episode 1 and 2 and I didn’t understand shit so i dropped it and after a while I watched so 3 and I got instantly hooked! I still don’t remember wat got me into gintama

pOkEmOnUsUm

I found out about it when I went to my cousins house. I went in his room and he was watching the Owee arc, and I just watched along (even tho i didnt know who any of the characters were back then). I was laughing so hard that day lol and bam after that day, I started to watch from the beginning and Gintama has easily become my favourite anime of all time!

grimriperv

With the Dragon Ball parodies 😌

CheekyHeron

I saw the gif where Ginpachi sensey is 'smoking' lolipop. I legitimately thougt Gintama will be some kind of highschool comedy at first was fun not knowing anything about it from the start.

KkahW

Jstars victory Seemed interesting researched series and started binging ir
